Title: SUCHES GEORGIA TRIP 2.0 - REVISED June 4th to 9th
Post by Dave on 02/17/18 at 04:43:50

A few of us have been exploring the Suches, Georgia area the last couple of summers.  MM, Stewmills and I went through the area on wet roads while trying to dodge the rain showers hitting Franklin, Clayton and all points that would lead us back to our temporary home at the Kick Stand Lodge last year - unfortunately the roads were just too wet to do much exploring.  Later in the summer my wife and I returned for a "couples" ride weekend and we had great weather for exploring.

The Two Wheels of Suches is a great place to camp or cabin.  The restaurant is open for All meals between Friday and Sunday - weekdays it is open for lunch.  The meals are so good that a lot of the local "non biker" folks show up for breakfast and dinner on Friday and Saturday.
http://twowheelsofsuches.com/

There is plenty of good riding on twisty roads, the scenery is excellent, and the Natahalla River offers a fun diversion to watch the rafters and kayakers when they "turn on" the river on the weekends (they release water from the dams to provide good rapids).  Traffic is pretty light in the area, as it is not nearly as touristy as Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Suches trip is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in June (weather permitting).  I could arrive in the area in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 30, and stay until Sunday, June 3rd.  If the weather isn't good that weekend......postpone the event until the following weekend.  (June 6-10).  It is an 8 hour trip for me to get there and I will be towing my bike behind my car on my trailer, and I can pack the Mega tent that sleeps 4 easily (and I can sleep in my trailer if the tent gets full).

This will be a ride/eat/sight see trip - with the focus on riding.  The Two Wheels of Suches provides a great home base......it is easy to ride the local roads and then come back for meals.  Short rides to places like Chatuge Lake where there is a great restaurant on the edge of the lake, and Copperhill on the way to/from the Natahalla River proved to be good rides and good food.  Wolf Pen Gap provides a really fun ride with turns that are really tight.....there are 2 hairpin turns that are 1st gear 180 turns.....and 129 is more open and very hilly and twisty - we can even ride up to Booger Hollow where MM can get his Dollar Store Mountain Dew supply!

(Please keep this discussion on topic and related to the trip to Suches).

Its on my Calendar .    I hope to bring the Guzzi to this one ...  :)

But ,

I don't think its any more maneuverable than the Savage ... It just sits different  and is better for ridding double.

I am pretty sure that Stewmills is in on this trip.....we moved the date so he could come.

So far:  Dave, Oldfeller, MMRanch.......Stewmills?

Yeah, I should be good for this trip!  Hopefully it won't rain this time and every place we try t eat won't be closed or 'encourage' us to try somewhere else down the road. >:(

They have fire rings at each camp site, and the website says they have charcoal grills throughout the campsite.  There is Wolf Pen Gap Country Store within walking distance from the campsite and they would have charcoal - not sure if they sell meat for grilling.  There is a town 20 minutes up the road that would have a full stocked grocery store - and I will be packing a cooler in my car....ice is available at the lodge.

The lodge starts serving meals on Friday evening, and I suspect the Saturday and Sunday mornings will be breakfast at the Lodge.......and likely we will come back for the evening meals on Friday and Saturday as they are excellent.  Lunch will likely be on the road every day.....the restaurants at Chatuge Lake and Copperhill will likely be the lunch meals on the days we head out those directions.  There is also a town called Dahlonega about 14 miles up the road that has all kinds of restaurants and fast food places....and Highway 60 is a nice hilly/twisty road that is fun to ride.

The only downside I can remember about our camp site was being right near the creek behind the lodge, and in the evening there were pesky little insects that swarmed - they didn't bite but they sure were obnoxious as they kept flying into you face.  We were right near the deck at the lodge, and one evening a group of folks stayed up late and hung out on the deck and were a bit noisy in their conversation.  This year we will pick a camp site farther away from the lodge and creek and hopefully avoid the pests.  The campers were all quiet after hours.....it was just the deck area that was noisy.

I know the place much better this year.......and we won't have any trouble finding places to eat and ride.

I have the ability now to adjust the arrival and departure days in my schedule.....and if the weather is better early or later.....I can move the days around.  The only thing that would change is our ability to get meals at the lodge - and Stewmills is likely restricted to the Friday evening and Sat/Sun rides.

The Suches trip is a long drive for me as well........8 hours at a minimum.  I can make it to the Deals Gap area in 6 hours and those 2 extra hours each way just really seems to make it long......16 hours would be painful!

There will be a trip to the Kick Stand Lodge sometime this summer....if that is closer for you it would be a good trip, as you can ride the Tail of the Dragon and get that marked off your bucket list.

Deals Gap is a less painful 13 hour trek...but...that area of the world (Knoxville) is on my retirement short list...so there is a good chance you will see me there.

Been there, done that.  I hated Dragon - would never go back.  Better riding up in Upper South Carolina, and into western North Carolina.  AWESOME!!

Not everybody likes the same thing.  I love riding the Dragon and Moonshiner 28 - provided the traffic is light and there isn't some wacky car club trying to get their big cars around the tight turns.

I love riding sharp tight curves where speeds are low - but the thrill is high.  I am not a fan of high speed sweepers and long straight sections.

If you want more open roads, better scenery, less traffic - there are better places to ride.  When we stay near the Tail of the Dragon we get out early in the morning and ride it before it gets crowded - and it is a very nice ride when you have light traffic and the cars/trucks pull over to let you pass.

My experience at the TOD was on a Thursday (thus, mid-week) and yet, the "sprocket-rocket" cyclists were in droves.  My old BMW couldn't do the speeds that they were doing (nor would I want to) so they were passing me like crazy.  Not a bit enjoyable for me.

However the SC to NC roads that I now ride (Rt. 178 up from Liberty) are nearly just as curvy but lots (to me) more enjoyable.  Quiet, lots of woods and trees, curves, some hairpins, and virtually no traffic!  It doesn't get any better than that!!

Hope y'all have a great time!!  Please be careful!

Way off topic...

Dave what camera and camera mount are you using?

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd
Post by Dave on 02/22/18 at 06:27:23

This trip to Suches most likely won't include a trip to the Dragon....although it could happen if somebody really wants to go there.

One trip that is nice is to leave the Two Wheels of Suches and ride north on Wolf Pen Gap to 19 North, then ride to Tellico Plains and stop for lunch at Kats Deli, then ride the Cherohala Skyway...then on the east end of Cherohala you can ride 129 South and return to Suches.....or we can ride over to South on 28 through Franklin and go south until we reach Warwoman.....then go east to Clayton.....then find our way back to Suches.  I believe it is an all day ride of about 300 miles - and it has a nice mix of roads (with a few pesky towns to ride through where we can stop to get fuel).

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd
Post by stewmills on 02/22/18 at 06:49:11

I am perfectly fine if we don't reach TOD. I'll ride it if it's there or someone else really wants to go early in the morning.  I have gotten that out of my blood and have nothing to prove.

Otherwise, I am an easy riding companion...all of the other routes and way points for lunch and fuel stops, etc. sound good to me.

Note for this year's route: THIS gas station didn't have gas.  ;D

Is that your helmet, gloves and bra in the photo?

They didn't have a working restroom either.....and they had security cameras to deter you peeing behind the building.

The campsite and restrooms at TWS are convenient....and there are lots of trees.  There is a large central bath house....and the lodge has 2 bathrooms that stay open all night.  We can pick a spot close to the necessary rooms.

I really like the Two Wheels of Suches - the place is clean, the meals are great, and the owner and staff is really friendly.  The bikers that show up are a bit less rowdy than the folks at Deals Gap, and the crowds are much smaller.

The only real downside for me is the 8 hour drive to get there.....I can get to Deals Gap, the Kickstand Lodge or Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground with about 2 hours less driving However.......the Suches area may be more accessible to those who live in the south.

Bump.....this thread is still active and I have my calendar marked.

I just checked Accuweather to see if GA has warmed up yet, and the next few weeks could provide 60 degree riding days - but the nights are down in the 40's - which is just a bit too cold for me to go camping!

Looking ahead to May....the night temperatures creep up into the 50's - so it does appear the end of May/June weekend that we have scheduled is about as early as we can schedule and have tolerable night time temperatures.

Maybe.......a "global warming" weekend event could be scheduled on short notice if some weekend proves to be warm and dry enough.

Post by Dave on 04/19/18 at 01:59:02

I'm fine with the Guzzi.....as long as you can sit in the saddle all day!

We don't have to ride all day every day - but there is great opportunity for some 300 mile days in the area.  One very nice trip is to go up to Tellico Plains, ride the Cherohala Skyway, then go over to the north end of 28 at Deals Gap (Dragon ride optional), the ride south on 28 to Warwoman, then go west into Clayton, then back to Suches.

Other good rides that are good for sightseeing and eating are going over to the Natahala in the morning to watch them turn the river "ON" and see the first folks in kayaks and rafts catch the rapids.

Going to the favorite roads like Wayman is also doable, Wolf Pen Gap is a hoot with the incredibly tight turns and steep grades (when it is not raining), and 19 is full of fun hills and curves!  Stewmills wants to take us to his restaurant on Wayman, and the restaurant up at Chatuge Lake is a really nice place with a 2nd floor patio and great affordable food.

Sounds like I might to Follow this trip , and that's OK .   I talked with OldFeller this morning and if he's bringing the Barcalounger then I'll bring the Cruiser I've got left too.  I'm working on putting a "light-bar" on it , (bought for the Spotster and didn't fit).   I understand folks pulling out in front of ya is indirectly related  to the number of headlight you have  !  ;D

You can bring any bike you want MM.....you won't have any trouble riding all day.  I am bringing the big tent - so you won't need to pack a tent.

Here is the observation area at the Ocoee River........we can ride up to that area on a weekend day and watch the rafting (they don't turn the river on during the week)!

That sure looks like a wet month!

Suches is not a very good place to be in the wet, as the roads are curvy and the hills pretty steep.   I don't like riding in the rain but wet roads don't really scare me - but Wolf Pen Gap is treacherous in the wet (MM and Stewmills and I rode up it about a mile when the road was wet from a storm that had passed....it was very slow going).

We will just have to wait and see.  I will bring the little Ninja if the chances of rain are likely, as it doesn't throw water all over me like the Savage Cafe' bike does.  If it looks like a washout we just need to consider going another weekend when weather is better.

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd
Post by Dave on 05/15/18 at 05:54:08

Last year my head plug gave me a "warning leak" on the first morning ride when Oldfeller and I went to the IHOP in Robbinsville - thankfully it only leaked on that one short ride and stopped leaking as we left to ride the Cherohala Skyway and meet MMRanch on his way in.

So I decided to go ahead and replace the head plug and tore the bike apart on Sunday when it was just too hot to work outside in the afternoon sun.

I believe I got a bit carried away (replacing cam chain with Lancer's Nitrided chain, replacing Stage 1 cam with Stage 3, installing Kevlar clutch plates and EBC springs, torquing head bolts and resealing the copper washers to stop oil weeps, replacing the middle weight Armen flywheel with a smaller one).

I have a bit of work to get finished this week, as I need to ride it around for a week to break in the cam and make sure everything works - then do a valve adjustment before I head off to Suches for a bunch of 200-300 miles riding days!

Yeah, I wonder if our stickers are still intact?

I was working real hard last week (see pic).  I would like to say that this was with or for the kids, but unfortunately it was me and my 22 year old nephew.

As far as riding days, I am flexible as well depending on what the weather does. I am not 100% positive of my exact arrival day as I'm juggling a few things including the weather, but I'm still in.

Bump for the latest weather, we are only 2 weeks out at this time and I think we have been living the REAL Suches weather pattern for the entire east coast for the last week week and a half.

Still, it looks solid enough to GO !!! at this point in time.

Do we have a "show up to help assemble the tent" time yet?

Yes, the weather is looking better.  I don't really know exactly what day I am going to head down to GA, as it really is weather dependent.  It does look like the chances of dry weather are good for most days - but there is a chance of scattered showers almost any day.

I am likely to watch the weather on Sunday (27th) and make a decision to drive leave in the afternoon and arrive Sunday night if the weather is really nice in the first part of the week.  If Mon/Tues have high chances of rain I will likely wait until mid-week to arrive.

There is no need to pre-plan some exact time to set up the Mega-tent, as I can sleep in the trailer until other folks arrive.  I have no problem arriving early and riding alone if the weather permits.....if the weather at the end of the week/weekend proves to be foul - I may take my tent and go home!  I don't know if Stew is riding in.....or if he is bringing his truck.

MM, are you planning on going?   I am planning on going, and may actually go a day early and could bunkhouse with Mo for a night should Dave decide to delay a bit due to what all he has going on leading in to that weekend.

Or else maybe hit some freebee spots up by the Dragon (Tapco) or down by Robbinsville Santeetla Lake area.

Weather is looking pretty good ....

There is also a freebe campground (Appalachian trailhead campground on 60 Hwy just a few miles south of Two Wheels of Suches) that has a generous two week stay restriction to it.

This Woody Gap area is very near to Two Wheels of Suches, with both being on Hwy 60.

My wife and I went up to the Woody Gap trailhead one night....the sky was very clear and the view of the stars was incredible.  There are hiking trails at that location....it may even be a place where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road.  The campsites were just flat spots alongside the trail, and the bathrooms were chemical toilets......I don't remember them having any water.

The more I look at the weather.....the more I believe I will be driving down on Tuesday afternoon, and it is an 8 hour drive for me and I may not make it the entire way and I may stop to sleep and make the rest of the trip early on Wednesday morning.....however if the weather forecast turns favorable - I may come earlier.

Tuesday prior or Tuesday following the first of the month?    Or would it be better to wait until this upcoming weekend to ask such questions, as by then it will be as clear as mountain weather ever really gets to be.

Applying dates always helps me with the confusion factor, lots of times it is perfectly clear to the person saying it and then MM or I get confused because we are off a week in our heads to the current discussed plans --- generally we are in two different directions, too.

The focus week is the May 30 - June 3rd.  The weather forecast is changing daily, and the most recent forecast doesn't look all that cheery.  We will just have to wait and see how things look.  It seems that the way some folks ride in this area in summer is to get out early and get the riding in while things are dry - then find some place undercover when the 2-6 PM thunderstorms show up.

http://i63.tinypic.com/24c8gbc.png

In the current forecast the thunderstorms are expected for Monday/Tuesday and the rest of the week looks a bit better.....so I was planning on coming down Tuesday for riding starting on Wednesday.  I will have to leave on June 3rd (Sun) as I have a Council Meeting and need to be back to work on Monday (June 4th).

I am trucking the bike as usual.  I am flexible on dates right now. I actually had to cancel my other Dragon trip last weekend on account of my riding partner was in the hospital with very serious health issues which thankfully he is recovering very well from now.

So....if we need to talk about juggling dates let's talk. My goal of course is to arrive maybe late Thu in order to ride all day Fri and Sat and some Sun.  That keeps me from having to take too much time off work during the week if possible.

I called and reminded MM to check in, he will do so whenever he gets off his hay cutter/baler this afternoon/evening.

I am flexible -- Dave and Stew are the ones with work restrictions so I think they should call the shots for days and times.

I will be riding in on the Barcalounger, which is filled with gas, oiled, and sits ready to go.   I am now rustling cables and phones and such so I can have a constantly charging phone to act as a navigation aid.

MM had some minor issues getting his phone to constantly charge off his bike's electrical system and was leaving his phone in airplane mode all the time (ie turned off) which is why nobody could see him on Life360 on the start of the last trip.

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd

We (MM, Oldfeller, Dave) will likely be arriving earlier than Stew.....he will arrive late Thursday night and stay until Sunday (weather permitting).  If any other forum members want to show up and ride please let us know so we don't ride off without you.  We likely could squeeze another tent on our campsite and might have room for 1 more person in the tent (2 if I go sleep in my trailer).

Overnight temperatures will drop into the 50's....so be sure to pack some warm clothes and your insulated jammies!

I will likely pack a cooler, ice is available at the Two Wheels of Suches or the nearby Wolf Pen Gap gas station/convenience store.  The lodge is open dinner on Friday, breakfast/lunch/dinner Saturday, breakfast/lunch on Sunday.  (If there are a lot of people in the area....I would not be surprised if TWS open for breakfast on Friday morning).  The Wolf Pen Gap gas station/store has really bad reviews lately - we are not likely to find a good breakfast there.  I am happy just having some yogurt/cereal for breakfast and getting on the road...then stopping for a nice lunch somewhere before noon - or we could take a nice morning ride to some place for a breakfast.

I'm with Dave on the food.  Since I am trucking it, I will have snacks with me and happy to share.  I am not a big breakfast eater so a bar or snack is good for me until lunch.  I probably won't have anything that requires ice just for convenience of not having to fool with it but can bring a cooler, if needed, for anyone biking in that requires one for medicine or anything such as that.

Mike, you need a charger cable to run from your USB plug on your Guzzi box to your phone up on your handle bars to be able to constantly charge your phone because you will leave it on and running all the time for Life360 to work.   I also have a pouch on my bike that can hold a phone that simply needs a good charging which can happen easily while we ride around.

When you get to Two Wheels of Suches I will show you how to teach your phone to hold a stored Google map in its guts so you don't have to eat up data all the time.

Just have the cable and the holder (or the pouch) all set up and ready to go .....

Oldfeller:  You seem to have a more positive outlook on weather than I do.  The forecast has "Thunderstorms Possible" for every day of our trip!  I suppose that is the somewhat routine weather in the mountains where the storms show up every afternoon between 2 - 6, however I would prefer them showing a more enticing forecast and a day or two of clear weather for our trip.  I am coming and bringing rain gear, and I likely will bring the Ninja as a backup bike as it throws a lot less water on me than the Savage Cafe' does (and I don't care if it gets dirty).

I will bring the Mega tent and 2 cots and a mattress - you just need to bring your sleeping bags and pillows.  I will also bring a cooler so we can store Yogurt, milk for cereal, etc.  It may be that we don't spend a lot of time for breakfast on this trip - as I am not aware of any nearby IHOP without making the 30 minute drive to town (which is the opposite  direction of most of our rides).  We can do some exploring and learn how to make this place user friendly after a few days of knocking around the area.

I will add the Life360 thingy before I leave - does it eat up data when it is on?

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd
Post by Oldfeller on 05/25/18 at 07:28:28

Life360 uses the Android location "ping" data that we all constantly send to Google -- the Life360 servers use your ping to spot both you and the other riders.    Yes, this is some light ping data use, some of which that happens anyway.  And it is constant low level ping type use when on a trip, so your phone needs charging more often.

This is all shown up on a Google Maps skeleton, so you are using some Google Maps data too.  And some more battery is being used keeping your Google Maps moving properly.

So you got two things to deal with, total data use and battery use.

On an Android phone I can minimize this total data use by using the saved maps feature in Google Maps (I always use saved maps now since they can be really quite large and useful now, the saved map I am using now is called Suches, and it covers every inch of our trip, so I can navigate using it, run around the GA mountains, track all of you and then go home all off the same locally saved map in the guts of my phone).   I am never without a locally saved map now-a-days, but I have to be under wifi to start up a "navigate to" event (the Google servers do all the route calculations for me) -- I told my phone to only use wifi for these functions so as to have the thing NOT be able to run me up any big data bill under any circumstances.

Life360 was developed so parents could track kids by their cell phones, so it isn't a bad data hog per se since it is ALWAYS on and running.  Always been that way.   It isn't data use free, but it isn't bad either.   The large mass of people using it have worked out all the money saving tricks and Life360 incorporated all of the good ones ......

Google Maps can eat some data if you don't use the saved local maps feature -- imagine sucking down a fresh map every few minutes while using cell tower data support as you roll around -- ouch !!   Using local saved maps, no issue.   Telling it not to do any new navigations apart from being on wifi support cuts out practically all the remaining cell data use.  Yes, it means hunting up a McDonalds periodically when you need to crank up a new navigation, but they are scattered all over the place and you needed a senior drink and a pee anyway.

All use of the Life360 App can be very simply ended at the end of a trip by deleting the app, then it is GONE gone gone.

Is it bad?   I judge it by my 3 gig total memory size throw away $29 free forever phone that sits up on my handlebars.  This phone only has a 3 gig per month "forever freebee" data plan.  As long as I give it constant cable plugged in charging power and a saved map I can stay under the tiny data cap that is "free forever" on my phone.

And yes, I carry a second phone for backup, in case of "aw shite" events or if I do run my little freebee data cap into the ground.

Weather

We are in the summer zone now and afternoon thunder storms pop up like acne every afternoon.

My weatherbug app has a radar that covers the entire East Coast and allows "collapsed time motion" so you can see what is coming from where.

And sure enough, here she comes again .....

Surprise, being able to see it coming just means you know you need to pull in somewhere and sit at a table as a group until it blows past.    But that pop up acne thunderstorm action you can't predict and it flat didn't exist 15 minutes ago for the radar to report it ahead of time.

This trip isn't going to be rain free -- it is too cold during the spring "less rain" period and too cold and overpopulated during the fall dryer "leaf watcher" period.

MM, you need to speak more plainly.

I think I hear you say your hay bail effort got rained on some and "mechanical break downs did happen".

You are cutting down your arrival to Weds & later and you are acting a bit iffy about that.   That's OK and that's real -- your hay harvests are what feeds your cows and that is important too.

Tell us what's going on and what you need for days -- I think we are getting better info from Stewart now and Dave is speaking plainly about not liking the afternoon thunderstorm forecast right now.

well , when the hay seasons for a day or two … I'll put it in the barn Monday or Tuesday (Dry day) and weather permitting I'll be ready Wednesday or Thursday for a Mountain Trip !
The last forecast I saw was prediction Rain for Wednesday , but that was a couple day ago.

Where we going to base-camp at ?   I'll put the address in the GPS , plug the phone into the 5v socket and put it in the tank bag.   :)  Then just follow the purple line on the GPS all-the-way to base camp.

I have accidently found a page on my phone with three levels of tracking location .   Its on the bottom one now "GPS only" (I think).   The middle one uses GPS and (something else) to track location but it was a constant battery drain setting and might suck all my data points too ???    so I didn't pick it.
But the location showes me at home on MM Ranch rd. the way it is and I saw two more icons on the 360 page two last night while I was looking at it.

Weather Tools

I am becoming a dis-believer in the long term forecasts from Accuweather, the stuff we have been using as trip planning tool for the last longest time.

I think it gets cached and as such we are sometimes looking at out of date forecasts from old stored & cached data.

Meet Weatherbug, the phone software I now use because it uses a lot less memory and it responds faster on an old phone (one of which I got and will carry on trips).   Weatherbug is a little crude around the edges, but it seems to report "spot on" which is what we really need more than good looks.

What is good about Weatherbug is that it calculates itself new each time using freshly pulled reporting data (so far anyway).  At its most complex, it can show you a local weather radar scan in real time showing pattern motion, speed and direction (which is as fancy as we ever need).

https://www.weatherbug.com/weather-forecast/10-day-weather/suches-ga-30572

Notice the weatherbug addy contains no cached information.  I think this is an important detail to be looking for when we post close in weather data.

Get the weather fresh from the several brands of weather reporting systems that each of us like and decide off of the consensus of the several weather sources.

What do you guys see as you look all afresh with your own favorite tools ????

What I see kinda sucks .....           click on the Screenshot Paper Clip.prg "line of text" thingie directly below this to see a full size READABLE image

Evidently tropical storm Alberto is hitting the gulf on Monday, and it may be the cause of the wet weather. The forecast for all of the usual spots is soggy for next week.

I suggest we just wait and watch for a couple more days and then make a decision by Tuesday to go or not.  If we decide it is just too wet for Suches and a tent, we could call and see if Phil has a cabin at the Blueridge......or see if Mo has any room in the bunkhouse or a cabin.  We likely don't want to reserve anything in advance and lose a deposit if we don't go.

Unfortunately the rest of the month appears pretty soggy, and I have a somewhat limited availability this month as my wife will be going to FL to help her mom for 10 days - she will be leaving on the 9th and return on 18th.....I have a retirement party on the 23rd, and a training seminar on the 28th & 29th.  I might be able to squeeze in a trip the following week as long as I leave on June 8 (I do have a Council meeting on June 5 - I might be able to get out of it if the weather is promising).

......or see if Mo has any room in the bunkhouse or a cabin.  We likely don't want to reserve anything in advance and lose a deposit if we don't go.

Dave had him a good thought there -- we would likely have Mo's bunkhouse pretty much to ourselves, we'd be right at the bathrooms & showers and it would be cheaper than splitting a cabin at Phil's since he seems to want to charge $10 extra now-a-days for floor sleepers.

No reservations, leave any time it suited us.

Mo likes Dave pretty good, he might could see if she will cut us a sweetheart deal on the 4 of us.

Title: Re: TRIP TO SUCHES GEORGIA - May 30 to June 3rd

I would not feel good about trying to negotiate anything with MO, as they are struggling and told me they could not survive if it weren't for a lot of volunteer labor and materials from friends and biker groups.

The weather is bad everywhere, and shows no signs of improvement until we get to next weekend....and it looks better for the following week.  The weekend of June 9/10 looks great (unfortunately I need to be home on the 8th).

Suches area:
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/suches-ga/30572/june-weather/2153437?monyr=6/1/2018

KickStand Lodge area:
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/stecoah-township-nc/28771/june-weather/2095926?monyr=6/1/2018

I believe we should watch the weather - maybe we can keep Stews schedule and arrive late on Thursday 5/31 and keep riding until we get tired of the weather and/or need to go home.  We can decide if it is Suches in a tent or Kickstand in the bunkhouse as the coming week passes and the weather forecast gets to be more current.

The Suches loop is a great ride and takes us right past our camp.

We should wait until Friday or Saturday to ride over through Copperhill at the NC/GA border - then on to the Nantahala River.....as they don't "turn the river on until 8AM on Fri/Sat/Sun.

I also want to wait until Stew is with us to Lake Burton to eat lunch.  That is where his grandfather used to run the campground.  There is a great restaurant on the edge of that lake....second story deck with a nice view of the marina.

Thanks for remembering, Dave.

Yep, Uncle Jack used to man the campground at Moccasin Creek on Lake Burton: https://gastateparks.org/MoccasinCreek.  It is about 15 miles down to Unicoi State Park where the restaurant is: http://www.unicoilodge.com/dining/unicoi-restaurant/

He actually went up there about two weeks ago at age 96 and said that the restaurant has changed a bit and dinner can be pricey (Fri and Sat are $20), but we can just play it by ear and if we are hungry enough at lunch (cheaper) we can plan that into our route.

It could be that the Suches area is one we come back to every year or two.  The first year Oldfeller and I went through the area we were a bit disappointed......we missed some of the really good roads to ride, places to explore, and places to eat.

When MM and Stewmills and I rode through the area last year we were dodging a big thunderstorm east of Clayton - unfortunately another storm had rolled through Suches and soaked everything.....it was just too wet to stay and explore. (However we did find Booger Hollow).

I am currently planning to arrive Sunday around 8PM so that I can be riding on Monday.  If any of you want to arrive and help set up the tent Sunday night let me know - if not I will sleep in my trailer and wait to put up the tent when other folks arrive.

Trying to put that tent up in the dark sucks, plan on sleeping in the trailer with the bike.  Me I will be beating the MM show up time by a little bit, enough early to check out the 2 Wheels facilities a little bit while you are out exploring.

I'm thinking its about a 6 hours ride .   I'll get on the road about 09:00 hrs. so if all goes well I'll be due to arrive about 15:00 hrs.

So , big question ??? Should I bring an extra tent ?  (8x10'x72") or  (a two man 7x7'x42")   or  (my one person tent) …

I'll bring my air mat anyway.  :)   Any of my tents just sit on top my duffle bag just fine , everything else goes into the duffle.

OldFeller what time you thinking ?

I'll leave around 7:30 on Monday and take a slower backroads route that will put me there between 2 & 3 PM same as you.

Tent, yes I'd bring one as nobody knows what can happen on the road and tents really don't take up any room, really.

Mine is still packed on the bike from earlier this spring.

I am bringing your lead bullets, so save a little room in your bags.

If you are all packing tents.....I will just bring a 2 man tent as well and leave the Mega-Tent at home.  The Mega-Tent is a lot of work to set up, dry and clean and re-pack when I get home. (I was going to bring it so you didn't have to pack tents on your bikes).  Not having the big tent will also make it a lot easier for me to pack up on Sunday when I head home.

For the first few nights when it is the 3 of us we can just set up 1 tent and MM/Oldfeller can sleep in it - I will sleep in my trailer.  We can set up the second tent on Thursday when Stewmills arrives. (I am not sure if we would have to pay extra if a tent was set up for storage of gear....I can store my gear in my car/trailer).  I will bring a couple of awnings to park the bikes under.

Dave, do we pay per campsite (as many little tents as we need) or do we pay per tent?

Never mind, I looked --- it is per tent $15 a night for ONE person.  Extra people cost $7 more.

Dave's big tent $15 plus 3 additional people = $36     ($9 a head)

2 smaller tents plus two additional people = $44         ($11 a head)

3 small tents plus one person = $54                            ($13.5 a head)

Dave,
Don't worry with the mega tent on my account. I have been looking at getting a small 2 man tent (really a 1 man that barely fits a cot plus a little room for gear, etc.) and I may go ahead and get one before next week. I'm not looking for a reason to spend money, but I have no issue with paying for my tent for the 3 nights. I'll also bring my pop-up canopy that can be used for a bike garage. I am sure there is no charge for that.

Stew:

It sounds like we may already have 3 tents on the way to Suches, and we likely are only going to set up 2 tents - so don't go out and buy one.  I have a 2 man tent I am bringing....and it sounds like MM and Oldfeller are packing tents as well.

You will have a tent space available when you arrive.

Monday will be a great day for you fellows to be riding in, and I will be out   getting familiar with the area again.  I plan on loading the Life360 app to my phone later today or tomorrow.

I have a lot of yard/house work to get done today - plus bike washing and packing!

Our biggest risk on this trip is going to be SUNBURN.   Bring some long sleeve shirts and sunblock for the backs of your neck and hands and ears, etc. etc.

Plan for your comfort AFTER getting your initial sunburn .... you are gonna get one.

None of us have a decent tan as this spring has been too cloudy up until now.

Well I had loaded up the Savage and the Ninja.....I would ride the Ninja on the rainy days.  The forecast is so good - I unloaded the Ninja!

I had an incredibly busy day doing the yard work, planting bushes for the wife, taking the trailer to get topsoil for her garden, mowing, getting the bike(s) ready to go, getting the trailer hooked up and loaded, etc.  I am going to need a week off to recover!

I am planning on leaving right after church - with any luck I will arrive in Suches around 7 PM.

I took the Guzzi out for a 170 mile loop with the CMA bunch , the seat seemed to be OK and the shocks did a good job soaking up the ruff roads.  The Savage got to go on the last adventure so it's the Guzzi's turn this time .  ;D       I got 56 mpg today putting around (1/2 and 1/2)  back roads and  70 mph super slab  .

I am here, and the tent is set up....and the weather is beautiful.

You guys picked a good day NOT to ride your bikes.  Just north of Alcoa I hit a rain storm that was  so hard that 25mph seemed to be too fast to drive.  It seemed that from then on I hit a hard storm every 20 miles - with 18 miles of dry roads between.  Once I went through Tellico Plains it was good for a while  - then the roads were wet until I reached Copperhill.

Suches is dry, cool, and very comfortable.

I don't have the Life360 loaded  yet...I will try in the morning.

To reach the campsite pull into the concrete parking lot, then go right on the gravel road past the lodge.  Cross over the first bridge, then when you cross the second water crossing it is a big culvert.  The red bath house will be straight ahead - but turn right before you get to it.  You will see thee firewood storage area.....keep looking right.  I am right next to the creek in a faded blue Coleman tent that has a tan/yellow fly on top.

As the lack of photos shows.....we are having a good time.  The weather is perfectly clear and pleasant - once the morning chill goes away.  Sleeping in the tent and the morning ride to breakfast provides 54 degrees of chill.

Yesterday MM and I hooked up with a Ducati rider and chased each other around curves for 340 wonderful miles!  We obviously didn't keep him challenged on the straight sections - but I think we kept him amused when we got to the curves.

The section of 28 south of Highlands down to Warwoman road is an amazing collection of downhill curves - it always amazes me how long that road can go downhill and how many curves it has.........it is equal to the Dragon in fun factor, and a lot less traffic.  The east end of Warwoman is equally as fun!

It is another beautiful morning in Georgia!  The potential showers for this afternoon have disappeared from the forecast for today, and there is no rain forecast for the rest of the weekend!  The Two Wheels campground is filling up with dual sport bikes as there is a special ride event this weekend - this will be a very busy place by the end of today.

MM and I did another long day yesterday and found some wonderful backroads - it seems you can't find a road in this area that doesn't have nice curves, hills and views......and the traffic so far has been pretty light.  I suspect that this area is just a bit less touristy than the areas around Deals Gap/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg/Cherokee/Asheville.  The back roads were a bit busy with haymaking yesterday - but tractors and trucks hauling hay are pretty easy to pass.

Stewmills arrived last night about 5 minutes after we got to camp - the timing couldn't have been any better.  MM and I are both riding on front tires that are getting near the end of their life - we have been scuffing them up real good and they are holding up much better than I expected and they will easily last the rest of this trip. (Today we will find out if we can get Stewmills to abuse his tires as well!)  I did notice that both MM and I have a tiny bit more wear on the right side of the front tire than there is on the left.....an experienced riding friend of mine said that this is normal as right hand turns are inherently sharper since you are on the inside of the turn and the radius is tighter - on left hand turns you are on the outside of the curve and the radius is generally larger.

I had about 250 mile ride home today that was joyfully "un-eventfull".   We all had a nice ride out Hwy 60 west from camp then I headed north and Dave and Stew headed west.    So I had light traffic on Ocoee River Road , then a 75/80 mph super-slab ride ride to with in 40 miles of home.

All together it was a (10am eastern to 02:30 central) ride that left me grinning.  ;)

I'll be ordering a new front tire very soon .   The Front Sport Demon has lasted 5,987 miles and it is wore into the wear bars and beginning to "Bust/Rip" in places from stress.    So I'll try to post a picture.    It still has a few miles of tread before being declared "BALD"  but those little tear-marks are some-what worrysome !  :-/
yea , I know there are still those outside roll of tits that just refuse to be worn off ... I might have got them but the foot pegs were in the way !  ;D

There were lots of times when the front tire was stressed on this trip … even border-line  being "misused" .    We were probably pushing our limits and the limits of our machines more than we should have.    One of the days we went hwy 28 up toward the Dragon for  lunch.   But   those really tight , slow speed  twisties , don't seam to be as demanding on the rubber as those Long , Tight ,  Down-Hill , New Black-top twistiness of the North Ga. Mountains.

It was really FUN , ...  :-/ ...     The Camp-Ground was good too , good as any we have found  but  its like the sign says : " Best little Valley above the Clouds in N. Ga."   means ... it gets cold when the sun goes down !  ;D

Timing:   Second week of June is just about weather ideal, just past the rainy season and it is just barely warming up at night to over 55 degrees.   Days are great, not hot yet.   Nights are still long john weather this early in the season.

Facilities:   4 stalls each of Bathroom/showers with just barely lukewarm water after it runs a while, has a park style permanent grill and a fire ring per campsite.

Local amenities:   a block away gas station/restaurant with a breakfast pizza for $10 a pizza & coffee and drinks.   No Lodge food at all yet ......

Cost:    Moderate, equal to most park service places before the senior discount.

Distance:    Ideal for MM and Stew, everybody else gets an 8-10 hour drive/ride.   MM likes that short 4 hour drive to get to his house.

Roads:   Sweeper style mostly -- there are only 2-3 Fontana Dam & NO Dragon level curvy road sections available anywhere nearby.

Neatly kept up, clean, a woman comes and cleans the Bath House and the cabins every single day.

Inside the Lodge itself is neat and clean, but tenters apparently aren't allowed inside the Lodge area, it is reserved for folks renting the lodge rooms.    All the doors have combo locks on them, including the Bath House and the squat toilet areas.

I think the place would show better after it was fully open -- we got there the week before the first large scheduled activity and we were one of only 3 camp sites filled at any one time.

Cost per person ~ $12 ~ per night in a shared tent.   $15 a night if staying singleton per tent.

MM likes that short 4 hour drive to get to his house.

250 miles , and crossing a time zone .   5.5 hours ride time .   Still not to far for a easy day.

--------------------------------------------------

The last day the owner turned the hot water on.  I understand the water heater wasn't plugged in good.

Well, I have to admit the original configuration might have threatened to scorch the nearest trees a little bit ......

You never saw the very first configuration, some of the tee pee like poles were 15 feet long, not 5-7 feet like when you saw it.

...... but the campground people were there out walking around while I was building it and easily could have said something about it then.

How much of their heartburn actually came from my not using $20 worth of their expensive firewood, but instead getting it out of the woods?   And not paying them for several fire starter logs from their store?

I betcha they make up and post a bunch of new rules now about "safe, small camp fires"  and about not using wood from the woods at all, must use their sorry split pine pieces.

The current rules posted on the deck just say you can't cut down any green live trees, but you can cut down and take dry wood from the woods.

;)

Looks like they made you take out all the wood that went above the rim of the fire ring, which was actually a fair amount of wood.

But at least the steel ring glowed good with a strong projected light show from the three (3) laser cut 2 Wheels of Suches logos.    Bet that sucker got hot and radiated nice warmth all the way over to the picnic table.

Post by Dave on 06/11/18 at 06:08:22

I made it home right at 6:30 yesterday....then proceeded to unpack some very soggy gear.

Our ride (Stew and I) on Saturday was mostly dry, we did run into a storm on 19 trying go south up the mountain back to camp - it was around lunch time so we just turned around and found a place to eat lunch and wait it out.  We got a light rain while we ate - but then by the time we finished the storm was gone and we got a bit more riding in before calling it a day.  We found some really nice rural roads with nice pavement, nice curves and zero traffic.

We returned to camp and loaded up the bikes, took down the pop up shelter and packed somethings up for the return trip - and just left the basics in camp for the last night (tent/cots/bedding).  We walked up to the corner store to get a drink - and that is when the rain hit with vigor.  We hid out under the awning for a while, and there were 2 of those Polaris trike things stuck there.....they don't have any better weather protection that a motorcycle. A young couple from Pittsburgh pulled in to get out of the hard rain - they are on a month long trip riding double on a big KTM adventure bike.  We made it back to camp, and then discovered my small tent leaks badly, and unfortunately the pop up shelter was packed away in the trailer and there was no way to go get it without getting soaked to the bone.  The rain stopped and we just had to sop up as much water as we could with the towels we brought - thank goodness the air temperature was warm and we weren't cold.

I knew my tires were going to be worn out by the end of this trip - but I was a bit surprised by the wear patterns.  The front tire has plenty of tread down the center - the aggressive cornering on the curves has worn the tread off the sides....while the rear tire has plenty of tread on the sides but is worn down to the wear bars in the center, and is worn flat across the tread as if I was cruising down the highway all the time.

Oldfeller - I don't believe you got a good feel for the local roads, as we found plenty of curves to scrub our tires away.  While I agree that most of them are not 11 miles of 318 consecutive Dragon curves - we didn't ever feel that we didn't get a good dose of twisties in our daily routine.  Most of the really curvy roads we found were the 30-40 mph turns - not big sweepers like the Cherohala Parkway.

The campground "hot water" issue was unfortunate - but it was a plumbing related problem and not a normal condition at the campground.  The campground does provide seasoned firewood at a very reasonable $10 a wheelbarrow load - and the owners complaint was not that you had gathered up your own wood....the issue was a 6 foot high stack of wood in the fire ring and a bottle of gasoline sitting next to the pit.  The workers watching you were evidently not the ones who are in authority to interact with the campers - but they later reported it to the owner.  I believe the management handled this very well, and were proper in what they did.  This campground is the nicest one we have stayed at, and they work hard to keep the place in good condition.

It is a bit inconvenient that there isn't food available most of the week at Two Wheels of Suches - but the Friday/Sat/Sun meals are great.  We did find that a lot of the local restaurants just don't get enough business during the week to stay open and are only open on weekends.  We started to just eat Yogurt/pop tarts/bananas from the cooler to get the day started - then ate a good lunch while out riding.

SUMMARY - I really like the area, and it is a bit less touristy than the areas up in NC/TN.  The benefit is the roads are not as crowded and we didn't have too many issues with slow traffic holding us up for long.....the downside is that you have to drive a little while to find restaurants that are open.  The roads in this area are very good motorcycle roads......not every road offers the tight twisties that the Dragon is known for - but you can find them around on roads like Warwoman, 28 south of Highlands down to the South Carolina border, Wolf Pen Gap, parts of the Richard B. Russel Scenic Highway.  This area is NOT a replacement to the Tail of the Dragon - but is a very nice area to ride and provide an alternative to the areas we have been riding previously.

Dave, I knew the original fire stack was a bit excessive and perhaps unsafe, so I cut it in half down to 6 feet.   Problem is that 6 feet was still excessive in the eyes of the folks running the place.

Did they offer to give you back my gasoline?   And was the note phrased "nasty" as MM says?   Did they really threaten to kick YOU out for something that I had done two days previously?   Where were these restrictives rule posted?

All of these are a little bit pertinent to the question at hand.   Me stacking up some firewood while staying inside the rules posted on the main building certainly shouldn't be grounds for kicking YOU out or giving YOU grief.   Sorry about that.   Bad on me for that one.

Mo's Kickstand Lodge is more our speed as far as rules go, I think.   Plus the bunkhouse is right nice for creaky old men (Badwolf and I both think so).

Good news, I fixed the little handlebar issues with my bike already and now that I am no longer in pain I am not so adamant about not riding any more.

I rode the Cafe' bike approximately 1,200 miles - the most mileage was MM and I on Tuesday when we  did 340 miles.  My fuel usage was somewhere in the high 50's/low 60's for the trip - speeds varied between 40-65 mph for most of the rides.  A lot of the back roads and twisties were 3rd gear cruising and pretty easy on fuel.  There were a few times we had to get on a highway and run 60+ mph - we tried to avoid that when possible.

The new cam/rockers in the bike seemed to be working well - I didn't hear any weird noises coming from the engine.

The "Fire Note" stated that we would be required to leave the campground if we burned the 4 foot tall fire.  It was firm - it wasn't nasty.  They provide seasoned firewood for $10 a wheelbarrow load, and firestarter logs at $1 each........most folks don't see the need to scrounge around and build a bonfire, and I agree that the excessive amount of wood that was stacked in the small firepit should not have been ignited with gasoline.

Sorry I didn't offer a summary.  Got home yesterday and had to unload and unpack things, and took the opportunity to go ahead and wash the bike and change the oil before putting her up. Had house company as well so I didn't have too much free time.

I concur with Dave's and MM's assessment. There were a lot of good roads to get out on and have a good run at some twisties with some easy rolling hills in between for a mental break. As Dave and MM know, I am easy to please so as long as I am riding and not stuck behind a line of cars going 20mph, it's all good to me.

I'm happy with another trip to Suches or KSL. They both satisfy my needs, which are a place to potty and shower and a spot to sit in out of the rain if needed.  The issue with food isn't a big deal to me as I am not a foodie, and I bring snacks to get me going i the morning before we find a lunch spot or to snack on if for some reason we messed up and didn't find a good dinner spot before returning to camp.

If you want to find things to complain about, you can find that in anything you set your mind to.  I look forward to these trips for the fellowship and of course the riding, and as long as those two were present I just took it all in stride and enjoyed myself.

I will say that I was disappointed when I arrive to see Dave's and MM's camp set-up.  Their neighbors (pictured below) that were there for the dual sport ride did it right, and I fully expect this level of encampment on our next ride!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

No...the owner offered you the 2 day discount for the lack of hot water - so I took your tent for Monday and Tuesday off the bill when I paid.

Most everyone who stayed at the place were a happy and talkative bunch.........sometimes it was hard to go anything quickly as I ended up talking to folks too long.

Good deal !  ;)

………………………….

I tried that light today with mixed results .   The white light part was nice but the fit didn't work out .   The  spring/arm was in the way of putting everything back together … so I put in a China LED H-4 that I had on hand and ordered one that has two sides/lights .   Yea , the top side burns 10watt for low and the top and bottom both burn (10+10) for high .    The one I had on hand is a cheapy - Series for low and parallel for high --- with the same light  pattern on both .   The high beam indicator buns dim and bright too !!!  ::)
It will be replaced soon enough !  ;)

I'll likely put the one I got from you in my truck and add another LED to the other side to have matching colors !   Unless you just want it back so you'll have a matching pair for your truck ?   either way is OK . 8-)

So , my tires took a beating on the Suches Ride.   I suppect everybodys tires took a beating.   ;D
Those nice smooth sides on my then new rear tire are now "Buffed and Ruff" sides from being leaned over under high  pressure.
MY front tire has torn places in the rubber where the front carcass stood firm and the rubber ripped from the stresses involved.   It was about wore out anyway … so …

I ordered a front to match the rear .   The picture makes it look like a more round profile than it really is , its the same tire I've got on the front of my Savage and its really easy to like.    The "tread blocks are big enough that they don't flex and cup like some other tires I've seen. On that narrow rim they sure are pulled tight looking around the edges.  :)

Yep.....we did dish out a pretty good tire beating on this trip.  It is hard not to when so many cool curves were available.  I knew my tires were at the end of their usable life - so I chose not to be kind to them.

You try the Avon Roadriders....and I will give the Michelin Pilot Sport Activ tires a test.  (I am starting to believe that almost any Sport Touring tire we use will have a 6-8 thousand mile life if we don't start slowing down for the curves.

My little trailer went back to Georgia this week!

I have a friend that is taking his Norton down to an event called British in the Blue Ridge.  The weather forecast was pretty crappy for the ride down and the ride back.......and spotty showers for the event.  So instead of he and his wife riding down - I offered them my trailer.  I called them last night and they said they had hit some very hard rain on the way, and the trailer turned out to be the right way to get there.

I am sure glad we were able to find 6 dry days in a row!
