Title: Prayer Request -- Mike's Leg
Post by Oldfeller on 02/15/18 at 13:20:07

MM's leg went septic on him and put him in the hospital for 3 days  ----  so the trip is cancelled as MM is too too stubborn and he would still try to go otherwise if there still was a trip to go on.

Meet up area by Lake City Florida, near Jacksonville on drive in day.    Date March 8th

Meet up here at Ruby Tuesday at 5:00 to 6:00 PM, eat and then roll out to the campground.

To repeat what OldFeller said !  ,

I think this is the North Florida camp we're using once each way :   https://freecampsites.net/#!96&query=sitedetails

It may be $8.oo , but that is fair-enough for a hot shower ! (8th+16th)   Also , after reading some of the reviews  I understand the National Park Pass works here too.

I'll see if I can find the South Florida one next :

Depuis Equestrian at gate 3 ,  Reservations  already made   (9-15th)

..........
The 9th , 10th and 16th  at Daytona FastLane is just so we don't have to run back and forth from Depuis , and to keep more options open !

Coleslaw, not mayonnaise.
That slippery stuff that the girls are wallowing in is coleslaw fresh made over at the Cabbage Patch.

Home of the World Famous Coleslaw Wrestling Sopotnick's Cabbage Patch Bar 549 Tomoka Farms Road Samsula, FL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsvzth2clQ8

::)

Neat new trick we are trying out this trip is Locational Awareness.    By sharing a code with the riding group we can see a local map on the Life360 app with a colored dot for each named rider showing on it.

Example:   I get up on the go morning and see that MM is still at home.  Quick call, new eating time established while MM does what he needs to do before leaving.

Jed gets lost at a turn by not keeping up with the group or Oldfeller loses the group by getting too far out in front of them.   Folks stop, pop out the phones and can quickly see where the errant boy is sitting waiting for them.   Confidence restored, group comes back together seamlessly.

Better yet, new uses.
Zippy or Stew wants to catch the moving group on the road as they go by a join up point.   Zippy/Stew gets to the join up point half an hour early and sits in the nearby McDonalds soaking up coffee and free wifi and watching the cluster of dots approach.   5 mins out, they move to the appropriate exit ramp and physically see the boys go by, then they instantly pull out and joint the back of the pack.

Next example, somebody wants to come for just one night.   How does he find the group as they roll around in the Bike Week Chaos?   Answer -- look for the dots on the Life360 app.  Hey, looks like they are waiting in line to try out a new old fart mountain rider bike at the Suzuki Pavillion.

The app also does instant messaging within the group which is also kinda neat.

Easy do with Life360, but something we have never been able to do before otherwise.

I'm getting "Stuff" out of the attic to see how to tie it on ...

If there is room I'll bring a single burner stove a folding frying pan , and a two cup coffee pot for instant French Vanilla Cappuccino ... it might be good to be able to fix single pan dish items  ,  Grill cheese or BBQ Chicken or ???   ::)

Was there in '95 on a Honda Ascot 500 v-twin. had to avoid the rural bar where they were doing the Jap Bike Drop from a tall crane, in case someone chose mine! Pretty much a mindless weekend all told. Never did make it to the Speedway, which was the reason to be there in the first place. Nice coleslaw/mayo though! ;D

I read an article a few days ago about a fellow that was riding and didn't have a lot of room - but needed to pack food.  He packed cans beans and a can opener.....any variety of canned beans....didn't really matter.  The beans could be eaten cold, provided good nourishment, and when done the spoon would be washed and the can collapsed for easy packing (if you want them warmed up put them on the cylinder head for 20 miles).  Same could be done with Beanie/Weenie, Spam, and other foods like Pop Tarts, Jerky, etc.

The fine dining can be done at local Cafe' and restaurants.

10 miles is not very far to us and I suspect a quick pick gas station is a lot closer -- morning coffee can be had there for less than a buck, generally.

I think the biggest organized meal of the trip will be the meet up meal at Ruby Tuesday, as Ruby was picked simply because it had free wifi and I could see where MM was located on the road while reading a book as I waited.

Although the salad bar at Ruby is healthy enough, the burger that comes with it is a half pound of meat with double crossed full slices of thick bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce,  pickle, mayo  --- it is a true premium burger with all that comes with it.

This old man doesn't eat that many half pound burgers any more, so I will likely will take half with me in a take out box and eat it cold at camp for a snack later on.

Got to have something stupid, beefy and bacon flavored sitting in my hot saddle bag to attract all them hungry blind snakes, armadillos, pythons, feral hogs, black bears and gators after we go to bed after all ......

http://s.newsweek.com/sites/www.newsweek.com/files/styles/full/public/2018/02/13/boar.jpg

Same smell (half digested) drifting out from the tent flap and vents might fetch them just about as well, you know that them larger pigs, pythons, bears and gators surely do like catching and eating them a couple of ripe old farts all tortilla wrapped in a sleeping bag.

Semi-wild pigs have no fear of human beings, remember ..... and eating them some long pork that smells of bacon is jest a bit of "turn about is fair play" to them.    And certainly the gators don't care, no fear of people at all ......

Guys, there is NOTHING near where you will be. Where your camping at Dupius it is 10 miles to the bridge, and 2 miles under around and over it to a gastation. They have a chain sub shop in the back, and all the regular morning stuff. Grocery store behind it, BK and Mc D's across the street. A LOT of Mexican food trucks, and a good resturant or 3 in town. Follow the road (76) east 27 miles and your in Stuart, Fl. A small city with all you'd want. A Cracker Barrel at the I95 exit 6 or 7 miles before downtown.
Make sure you bring a gallon of drinking water and BUG SPRAY the frist trip there. After that you'll know what you need.
Oh did I mention BUG SPRAY? You will be only 4 miles from the lake and on the north edge of the Everglades.
Yea, don't forget BUG SPRAY!

What !!!  Giant feral NOTHING have moved into Florida from Australia now?   NOTHING are more deadly threats to sleeping campers, much worse than bears, pythons, pigs, alligators and them other domestic citters, attacking yer speedos without mercy while you are sleeping.

Them smooth adult males are bad enough, but them horny toothed females are especially ravenous ......   they likes to nip off various incidentals before going in.    Aussies sometimes call them Lena Bobbit worms down under, they do.   They eat the males alive during mating, turning the protein mass into eggs, thousands and thousands of eggs.

If you get got by a male first and a female finds you, NOTHING is worse for you than what happens when they mate together inside you and lay thousands and thousands and thousands of eggs in yer guts.

Title: Re: Bike Week Trip to Florida   March 8-17
Post by Oldfeller on 02/19/18 at 10:52:51

Large alligator gar, reeled in and then shot twice in the head to get it to calm down some as it was about to swamp the silly boat, then it was towed alongside the boat back to the boat ramp where the fish got tied to the submersed boat trailer (stretched over the fender well and tied along the main frame tube were you can see the rope marks that bruised the fish while in transit).  The boat and the fish came up out of the water at the same time.  The fish was then pulled off the trailer frame with a rope which was attached to the swing set and the boat trailer was simply driven out from under him, then pictures, gutting and then chopping him into sections light enough for people to lift for filleting the meat away from the armored scaled skin and again filleting the meat away from the ribs and then wrapping up the slabs of meat which was all done inside where it was a lot cooler.

At 378 pounds (estimated) there was plenty of fresh fish to go around for EVERYBODY ......

Dave should stock his pond with a couple of small alligator gar to thin out his minnow catfish some.    Naw, that's a bad idea since the gar wouldn't stay small for long and then Lilly would be in danger of being potential fish bait if she jumped into the water chasing something somebody had thrown.

Most excellent question ....  participants should count those who live in place, right?

MM, Oldfeller, BadWolf, Ed L.

Tent has a spot still open, so we have room for one more.

It is a roving trip, several days at the Daytona Beach Area - several days at the Dupris Area - and a day arriving and a day leaving up at the north end at Ocean Pond Area.

CURRENT WEATHER PREDICTION IS FOR FLAWLESS BEAUTIFUL WEATHER except for a scattered thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon late.

11th - 15th is in South Flordia , far away from Dytona ... Following Oldfeller and BadWolf .

The 16th is  back to Daytona .  For The Giant Wood Bike Burning  Camp Fire.

The  17th is back to Lake City.

The 18th is back to TN.

MM, were there any deranged clan groups of albino zombie hillbillies after us on any of the previous trips?

Did the dragon ever come out of that tunnel to NOWHERE to come get us?

(simply could not get that last group of Savagers to go down the throat of the beast, simply could not get them to put their bikes in gear, they just sat there in a row jest a waggin their heads no-no-no-no-no).    They never made it past the slithering snakes and the waist high piles of dragon manure to the blood stained sacrificial fairy ring on the other side of the tunnel.

Some things are jest naturally scary looking, like that dark oily looking alligator water in that pond over there.    Wups, there are them eyes poking up again.

You can lump all them dark terrors together you know -- same little thrill every boy feels on his first camp out when THE REAL DARK comes out.   Just that little thrill of terror to add spice to the experience and make sure you know where your knife is sitting -- just remember it is an air bed you are laying upon and don't bare the knife blade any.

::)

....... and yeah, and I do carry a razor sharp half axe in a cover to bed with me, too, edge facing in up under the air bed on the zippered side ......   but that is jest a simple medical implement for a crip old man so he can get up to go pee at night.   Plus it is easier to cut them big worms and pythons up into bait sized sections with a nice sharp half axe -- and if something bigger sticks its head through the tent wall suddenly I can whack it good on the noggin once or twice to make it let go of your leg ......

I think Versey had the best Idea ... A flaming rope  surrounding our camp !   ;D

actually , I've re-thought the Bowie Knife thing ... I have a one-handed Camp Hatchett that would work much better against Varmints   ;)

...............................................

But , we should still set up in the middle of other campers so we can hear the Screams getting nearer instead of being the Screamers' .  8-)

...................................

If we can't have a burning rope ... then ... we can make a urine line the varmints can smell as a warning .
That's probably why BadWolf  suggested we bring a gallon of water !   ;D

It's a sort of pre-trip ritual, like you PM'ing your cell phone number to me so we can contact you when we get there.   Or me sending you a Life360 pm message, which we could do if you signed up for Life360 and used the code which has since expired.   So I just list PM'd you a fresh code that gives you six more days to load the app and use the code.

In either case, we could get up with you, and you'd know where we were, just by looking.  Or not, as the case may be.

Part of the delicious fun is MM waiting for the eventual rubber alligators,  worms and snakes to show up when least expected.    He's already thinking about it and planning his counter pranks.

But I am a true sadist and will never really do anything to him, so he is going to be a frustrated anticipator.   His proactive counter pranks are fun, though, and he feels justified since I teased him about it first.

Just the thought of a small vaseline coated rubber fishing worm being found curled up inside his ear when he wakes up is a good enough chuckle for me .....        (mostly)        :o

...... them real ones like to burrow, and that ain't funny at all .......

Glad you guys aren't bothered by stuff like that. Down the road a couple of miles is a cemetery with a mass grave of like 2600 victims of a storm back in the 20's. I'll show you the marker.  But don't think about that while your trying to get to sleep.

I have an "early retirement" from an earlier job that I have taken early and ear marked for bike stuff, been running off of it for years now.

Got 3 more retirements to apply for when I hit 65, so I got some more pin money for gasoline and tent space.

Next challenge is finding me some bridge insurance to go between April 1 and December 31.   I have been taking agent calls and learning more about what insurances are available.

Trick now is to not get hurt as getting hospitalized can pauperize you pretty quickly once you are retired and don't have primo insurance and a cash flow from a job.

Look for me to make MM seem all rash going out into the future ......

Mike,

Daylight Savings time doesn't kick in until March 12th.

So, it is 6:30 at night on a clear night and it is just about dark outside.

This is of concern to me as there is a half hour travel time between Ruby Tuesday and the campground and I don't really relish trying to pitch a tent in the dark.

Generally speaking, when we are traveling any distance we are between a half an hour and an hour later getting to the finish point than we originally thought, what with bathroom and gas breaks taking up some extra unplanned time.

If Dark is 6:30 and tent pitch/air bed time is a half an hour and the travel time to campground is 30-40 mins we should plan to finish eating by 5:15-5:30.   Not trying to rush dinner at what might be a crowded restaurant,  we really need to get there by about 4:45.

This means planning to be there by 4:00-4:30 Florida time.    You would back off another hour due to time zone change and be aiming at 3:00-3:30 on your watch.

Should we get there a little early, we can always kill some time at a gun store or go pick up the few inevitable things that we didn't remember we were going to need at a local Dollar Store.

I can do this trip with only two gas stops so I will hit the road by 9:30 am on Thursday March 8th as I have no time zone change to deal with and I have a shorter travel time than you have.

Surprise, we are two weeks out now and the weather forecasts should be verging on real now.

Participants --- MM, Oldfeller, BadWolf, Ed L.

Tent has a spot still open, so we have room for one more.

It is a roving trip, several days at the Daytona Beach Area - several days at the Dupris Area - and a day arriving and a day leaving up at the north end at Ocean Pond Area.

CURRENT WEATHER PREDICTION IS FOR FLAWLESS BEAUTIFUL WEATHER
All mild drizzly weather for Weds has left the forecast at all three places.

Meet up area by Lake City Florida, near Jacksonville on drive in day.    Date THURSDAY March 8th

Meet up here at Ruby Tuesday at 4:00 to 5:00 PM, eat and then roll out to the campground.

You can tell Mike plans to practice making and breaking camp some, as when we go out West we will get to do that each and every day -- we need to get good at it I guess.

Flexible is good, if we want to go see something, we can go.

==================================================

Time to start final packing the bags and loading up the bike.   This is the part were I get it all (almost) but overpack like the dickens doing that.

This time I pack the stuff I will always use at each camp, drugs, meters & toiletries and I leave off little things that can be bought at any gas station as needed.

Trying to bring everything makes for a mess of confusion.  I always unload bags of stuff I never even went into.   It is a waste of space.

Pack small, buy if needed.

Post by MMRanch on 02/23/18 at 22:21:57

I've got my "Pack" out and putting stuff in as I remember what to bring .   After more than a week of sticking stuff in it I'll be doing good to get it to close !    So , I'll end up pulling everything out to see what I can do without .  ::)

One duffle bag , and a tent.

Did you want me to bring your ~200~ count lube & sized .3085" 192 grain lead bullets for the K-31?

Or wait and bring them whenever I am coming to your house?

Don't bother bring them to Florida.   I've got plenty of the 150 gr. jacketed to load and we're not even loading them at full power.

You must be leaving about daylight on the Barclounge .   I was hopeing to wait till the day warmed up a little but I'll plan on "suiting-up" and leaving early too.   Its a 10 hour ride and to get there by 4pm central I'd have to leave at 6 am .    Normally I get up at 7 and have coffee for 2 hours  ;D ..
Hopefully it will be a warm night on the 7th ...  :P

MIKE, READ ALL THIS, important place time changes

OK, I'll leave the lead for later.

Yeah, I see your 10 hour travel time estimate included the hour of time zone change and it pushes you way back into leaving in the pre-dawn chill.
Yuck.   Let's not do that.

Well then, the better option is to say in America's Best Inn on drive in day, a 2 star hotel with free breakfast for $49 (my treat).   This means you can leave at 8:00, travel in the daylight at a reasonable pace, stop and eat lunch and still be at the hotel by 6:00-7:00.   Plus you can recover better in a hotel bed rather than trying to camp on ride in day anyway.

Once again, cheap hotel means cheap hotel, but we have done that before and lived to tell the tale.

Hotel is here, right down the street from all the Eateries we talked about and literally two buildings down from Ruby Tuesday's on the same side of the street.    But now we can meet at the Hotel room and ride out and eat wherever we want to.    Go see a gun store, etc.   Screw around some in other words.    Relax, sleep comfortable ......   Recover nicely.

OK, we have a reservation at the hotel, so you now you got an easy get up and travel day.    I will message you the hotel room # once I get it, or you can call me when you arrive at the hotel.

First night, sleep easy inside, get  up all rested, take a nice hot shower, eat a free meal, toss the crap into a single bag and load the bikes back up -- start out at a reasonable time and get a good leg up on the Hurley Burley.

It's not just for you, I am an old man all of a sudden now too -- wait until you see me.   Then you will appreciate the "self-serving nature of sleeping easy" that very first night.

We are supposed to relax and ENJOY it, you know ......       ;)

That is why I have decided to get my last "heavy" bike in the next few months.  I hope I can ride it into my 70's - but how far into them is yet to be seen.  I am slowly working on a Savage based bike that will look like a 60's era British single and be suitable for an old fart to ride.  If I can't hold up a 350 pound bike......not sure what I could ride as modern bikes are all pretty heavy - even the small ones.  I suppose the little Suzuki TU250 at 310 pounds is a possibility.....I just wish it had more power - a 400cc version would be nice....so I suppose the Yamaha SR400 would be a better choice (about 360 pounds with fuel).

I got a Big Scary Surprise last Thursday morning.

I woke up so dizzy I couldn't walk or stand ,   had a fever of 104.2

I just got out of the Hospital Saturday afternoon.

Come to find out Cellulitus had settled into my right leg and the infection / fever had me so swimmi headed could't even stand with out hanging on to something ... it was quit Scarry from my point of view...

So

Now I'm on Medication , the Fever is staying down , the dizzness is only 1/2 of what it was , and my leg is only about 1/2 the size it was Saturday.    At this rate : I might be able to get my pants on tomorrow .
I figure I can heal up as well in Florida as I could if I stayed in Tn.    As long as I can get started Thursday Morning.    I'll just have to leave them swimmie headed drugs here !

if it turns out to be flesh eating bacteria you can loose the leg.
Do what the doc says.

MM:  I am an enabler....sometimes good - sometimes not so good.

One possibility is for you to load the bike up in the trailer and get the bike down to FL while you ride on 4 wheels in comfort - then ride the bike down there if your leg is better and the drugs are depleted.

Dude, you are sick.    You can't even put your pants on over your swollen leg ..... trust me, you dude are trip disabled.

Trip is cancelled now you can do what the doctor says without any forms of conflicts.    Take your drugs, rest, get better, get well.

We will catch another trip some other time.

I will take care of notifying the Hotel and BadWolf, you take care of getting what you can back out of the campground at Daytona.    We both need to clear the reserves at Dupris to keep our names clean as likely we will want to go back there again. (this is done for both of us)

Read back up stream -- two days and cancelled.   Hotel is cancelled.   Dupris is cancelled for both of us.   You need to call the campground at Daytona and just tell them about the hospital stay and the leg and give them the chance to do the decent thing by you.

You are not going to Florida to screw up the rest of your mobility.   Take your drugs, rest, heal and then you are good for something else later on.    Get all bold and stubborn and you can screw yourself up really good, peg leg or less if you do it stone wrong just because you were stubborn.

Remember, I have seen your leg with that great big gape hole in the side of it --- don't lose what you still got from being all stubborn.

=======================================

Dupris is all cancelled for both of us,  Hotel up north is cancelled too.   You still got to take care of the campground place in Daytona.

I don't understand ...

I can heal just as well in Florida as I can in Tn.    So , Where We at now ?

Our room at Americans Best is Canceled
Our camp site at Dubris is Canceled (both of them)
And the only thing we have left is the Camp at Fast Lane ?

Is that correct ?

This is two for two we have canceled out on BadWolf... I'm kind of thinking next time we should just call when we get there !!!  ::)

Yep, and you are healing your leg at home where your wife can watch over your butt to make sure that you behave.

If we went to Florida you'd wind up with triple pneumonia on top of whatever leg issues you are currently swinging.

By making sure you rest, take your drugs and follow Dr's orders we will have the pleasure of your company for a number of additional years ......

....... think of it as a wise investment.

....... 10 hours on the road riding in the 30o cold just after getting out of the hospital, then walking on his bad leg for 8-10 hours a day while playing rubber neck at the Hurley Burley ......  right

My wife says you sound exactly like me.

Dust off some of the other old plans and propose them again.    Here are the old things we didn't do.

Month of April was found to be simply too cold in NC mountains.   Not much was open yet as it was still below freezing at night.

In the month of May we proposed a Natches Trace run for the last week of April and the first week of May running on down to the gulf coast  where we could hit the various gulf coast rallies.

Ya got Thunder Beach and Panama Beach rallies both taking place in the first week of May.

On the return trip we got a Barcalounger meetup at Suches on May 18 and we do have a confirmed Suches for the very first weekend in June.

Just sit pretty and heal up this month and next month -- then plan something for early May.

rub the creams they gave you on your leg and get better

It is March, and the weather is just too cold and iffy in the OH/KY/TN areas to make any plans - every now and then it will warm up enough to allow a short ride.....better be home before the sun goes down and it gets cold again.

April can be very cold and wet - but there may be more opportunity for an occasional ride as the temperatures rise.

May.....there likely will be a chance for riding - who knows?

Maybe we could watch the weather and sneak in a weekend somewhere that doesn't get freezing cold at night?  Could be that we decide on a Monday/Tuesday that we could meet up somewhere for a Thursday - Sunday gathering.

Cumberland Falls in KY is less than a 3 hour ride for both MM and I.

For the Cumberland Falls area in KY - April has cold evenings but nice daytime temps.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/cumberland-falls-ky/40701/month/2647376?monyr=4/01/2018

May in the same area is a bit warmer at night.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/cumberland-falls-ky/40701/month/2647376?monyr=5/01/2018

I am open to suggestions for warmer/drier areas in April/May.

I am in Daytona and the weather was great today. I was riding all day from about 10AM till 5PM and it was sunny and warm about 75-80 and not a drop of rain till evening.
Did about 150 miles on some back roads and visited with some Guzzi friends in the afternoon and rode about 60 miles home.
Tomorrow will rain in the morning and clear by about 1PM.
The rest of the week should be sunny with daytime temps in the mid to low 60s and warm up by FRi-Sat in the 70s.

Post by Oldfeller on 03/12/18 at 11:33:36

Antmanbee,   I think what MM is asking for is for somebody that he can meet up with and do the Friday Burning Bike thing with.    He asked multiple times who was living local in the Daytona area and now he knows you exist now.

Me, I always realize that weather is a local event and although the weatherman says it is raining in the area it does NOT mean drops falling where you are at the moment.   Rain follows them dark clouds around, jest wetting the pavement under the clouds, mostly.  It's funny that way, ya know.

But we can all agree it was raining there somewhere last evening and some of day today (and perhaps some of tomorrow -- decreasing odds and amounts are showing up now for tomorrow).

MM has a leg condition that can progress into Septis if it goes to the bad side.   He is on drugs  and leg creams and his nagging head cold is being contained by the drugs he is taking as well -- let him jump on a bike for 10 hours and let him run on down to Florida and guess what can happen there too.

Especially when he starts breathing them roiling clouds of oily smoke from the burning bike thing.

:-?

It's about 72 and breezy here today. This was going to be our stormy day as the cold front moved-in. It rained about 10 minutes today and the same yesterday. Should touch the 40's or low 50's tonight, and chilly (FOR S. FLA.) the rest of the week. But NO SNOW!

No sleet or snow over here but I certainly underestimated how cold 47F is once you are moving at 70 mph. Thank goodness it has warmed up a bit and should not be any lower than 58F or so on the way home after work.

Right pretty leg there, MM -- and you got off fairly EASY on the whole thing too.    Lost the toenail, though.   Talk to your doc, those blisters could be a new pit forming in your leg if not taken care of properly.   Does he have direct experience with this sort of stuff, or does he need to refer you to somebody else who does?

Now you know why we gots that Zero $$$ planning rule -- Always Plan for FREE, then spend real money on the frills and extras only once you are actually there.

It is 10:00 at night and it is still snowing in NC.   This East Coast hugging storm complex is right amazing, really.   And it is headed south, toward Florida too.

Mike, I think the Cody Wyoming trip is likely going to be plenty of super long trip for me for this year.   I may talk up going on to Yellowstone while we are out there as it is very close by at that point.   Ditto for Pike's Peak if the guys are willing.  Yes it is further -- not as close by but if you are going to go bucket listing, you might as well kick over several buckets while you are all the way out there.    The vacation based guys may not have the time to ramble about, but we do.   Plus hurry is their middle name while the word ramble sounds better to me all the time.   I could see a split off of the ramble guys from the main group when they have to beat it for home to get back to work.

Mike, we are not getting any younger.  And you surely can see how a turn to the bad with the leg or back or whatever can put "finished" to all of it at any point in time.   We need to do what we reasonably can do while our bodies are still willing.

I am still up for a quiet relatively slow go down the Natchez Trace to the gulf coast when the weather gets warmer and you figure out what your leg is really doing.   Or a go up the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Perhaps not this summer, maybe next summer .....

Wow MM, that really does not look very good. I agree with Oldfeller, you should be seeing a specialist. Please take care of yourself.

Oldfeller, I also agree that we are all getting older and that we need to enjoy doing the things we like while we still can. A leisurely ride down the Natchez Trace will pretty much put you into my neighborhood and from here it is just another leisurely ride to the hill country. You will so enjoy the hill country. Great roads, beautiful scenery and superb food.

Although I have been able to do some fun things - most of my younger years have been dominated by having a professional career, and time away has been limited  (Some weeks I couldn't even squeeze in a single ride).

The next 10 years are going to be dedicated to taking more rides, more weekend trips, and more time away from the office. :)

Mike's leg is getting worse at this point in time, not better.

Sorry Mike, it is what it is.

We are one month out from the Sisters trip and Mike has lost a hand sized patch of skin, (both layers) that is involved in that puss filled blister area.

If he gets another large raw necrotic ulcerated area, he knows what can happen.  He has been there before.

Yes, he should be in the hands of a specialist or else he might be in for a rocky time over the next six months.

Time to pray, boys and girls, time to ask for help from the one that can provide it.

Yes Dave, believe me, you just have to DO IT, now....
I already told work I won’t stay on any longer.
I bought tickets to go spend time next month with my kids, after my last surgery on my face.
Then we rented a big old cabin up in the mountains in Oregon, for a week, and all the kids are coming up there in August.

My boat is all ready to have fun, looking for a 5th wheel to travel this fall and winter, just go!  ;)

I just remembered about 12 years ago I had something similar.
Woke with a stiff knee.
It got worse, went to emergency room, they thought it was gout, no kidding.
Went and gave me some pain pills...
Got worse, went back, next day.
Gave me a leg brace as I couldn’t walk now, and some antibiotics....
Kept getting worse.
Went to another doctor, well a LPRN, and she asked me what I wanted her to do????

What the heck >:(

It was infected obviously, a big boil, ready to burst...
I told her to lance it and drain that sucker..
She did.
It oozed until no tomorrow, and stunk!

More antibiotics, with a shot to jump start it

The next day it was already getting better.

It was I belief a staph infection

Your leg was WAY too swollen for you to be WALKING around OUTSIDE and cleaning your truck dude !!!
You may get bored just sitting in a recliner or laying in bed with your leg up but that IS EXACTLY what you need to do, not going outside and fiddling around.
Do you want to get well or not ? ?
If your child or wife had pneumonia but was bored and wanted to go party with friends or go out shopping, would you let them or demand they stay in bed and get well before doing something SO FOOLISH ?

People have lost legs or their life doing foolish things like that.

Stay put and read your Bible.  God has allowed this to happen for a reason.  What is that reason ?
I bet you that Jesus did not tell you to go out and clean your truck...did HE !

We want you around for a long time so take care of yourself, and when your flesh gets bored and wants to go tinker with something DO NOT GO, trust GOD instead and listen to HIM.

OK ?  OK.

I love you and you need to get well for the Texas ride, so behave.

MM, as I mentioned before I work for one of the best dermatologists in the USA. I asked him to look at your pictures and he agrees with the diagnosis of cellulitis and confirms that you need to take this very seriously. I told him you were seeing a second doctor today and he spoke quiet highly of military doctors so you should be in good hands. He said to listen to what your doctor tells you and follow his instructions. Other than that he said you need to take it easy, but not stay sitting or lying down all day. Ideally when you lie down you should elevate the foot at least 6 inches above your chest. And no I'm not talking about any weird yoga position. MM, please take care of yourself as this is a very serious condition.  We are praying for you.

Not trying to harp, just trying to get your attention  :-*

Guys I couldn't agree with "Easy-going" more.     Detailing the dash area is all I did while listing to the radio.   Your prayers are not going to waste and I'm really grateful for them .    Thanks for the outpouring of support too .  :)

Thinking of some future rides together gives me a "lift" for lack of a better work.

I'm not in a good position to get a picture at them moment but just one day in with the new meds and the RED is not quite so Vivid  .... With  Good Prayers , Good recliner , and the right meds then I've got confidence in making the ride to Kerrville in a few weeks .   ;)

Ray your one of the ones on my prayer list too !

;)      See, you gots lots of nanny wives out there ready to take care of you, dude.
And I betcha they do leg checks on you each and every day on the trip to see if you are going backwards any at all due to pure tee stubbornness and with riding 8-10 hours a day .....
     ;)

Mike, you need to talk to your doctor about exactly what/which bacteria are doing this to you.   Staph and Strep are two of the most common causes of cellulitis but your doctor is now thinking about "other" forms of stuff and he is firing his antibiotics at a wider range of stuff.    Get the man to write down what you got (or he thinks you could possibly have).

Lancer and the other guys with various issues -- read what Mike has and talk to your own doc.   Mine told me to avoid being around someone with open sores or "current" cellulitis as my mechanical heart valve mounting site could pick up that active strep/staph stuff in a skinny minute.

And he also told me if I get the flu or any other pneumonia type stuff to come in at once and be ready to stay a while as a good case of common strep or staff could do me in fairly easily.

READ, good info      https://www.medicinenet.com/clindamycin-oral/article.htm#what_is_clindamycin-oral,_and_how_does_it_work_(mechanism_of_action)?

These are not the usual sick and elderly people who die from influenza. But every year, flu carries away perfectly healthy young adults and children, and tens of thousands of people over 65.

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/here-s-how-flu-virus-kills-some-people-so-quickly-n839936

How does flu kill, and why does it sometimes kill so quickly?

Doctors who study the body’s immune response say there are three main reasons: co-infection with another germ, usually bacteria such as strep; aggravation of existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma; and a so-called cytokine storm, marked by an overwhelming immune system response to infection.

Yea , about what kind of bacteria ... My local Dr. Bob took a sample to do a culture on ... I'll call him Friday afternoon too see if he knows yet.   That link didn't work when I tried it but it may work later.

The second link stated 50,000,000 people died ... thats a lot of folks.

I'm afraid our IMAGE we leave most people with is : A tail light disappearing around the next curve ...  ;D

Our Texas Image is : Somewhat more "Layed Back" ...  ;)    And that's alright !

Got any update Dr. info and any new leg pics for us, Mike?

We can ask the Almighty to look in on you but us not knowing what's up hinders any more specific prayer.

I can't thank you fellers enough for the prayers .   The ankle was swelled up with the lower leg and it's keeping me from getting around much.   There were an old pair of crutches in the shed I've been using to get back and forth to the bathroom with .    Well now that the swelling has gone down I'm getting back and forth with only a cane.

That old saying about : "ya don't know what ya got till its gone" is so true .  So my Dr. is going to set me up with a second round of the 10 day CLINDAMYCIN HCL  just to make sure it gone !

I'm just laying around the house waiting on skin to grow back over it . :-[

Michael, was that the "flesh eating bacteria" you had ?

Is it my imagination, or has it just slowly progressed around to center on the back side of your leg?   The scab portion has grown and moved as the raw part went on around your leg .....

I will also pray that you be granted an EXTRA portion of patience and wisdom as if it itches as it begins to recede the temptation to pick at it or scratch at it would increase.

Nope , it was almost all the way around and now there is the big spot in the back-outside part and a little spot (1/2 dollar) on the inside part.

It does itch --- and is pealing like sunburn does .  I've got some 4% Lidocaine HCI Topical Anesthetic that makes the itch go-a-way .   And  with every pealing cycle it gets Smaller and Smaller and Smaller .   :)
I'm thinking of just putting a bottle of the Lidocaine HCI in the glove-box of all my vehicles including the bikes.
I'm thinking in a month it will just be a memory .

But that don't mean I don't need all the Prayer I can get !   ::)

Yeah, I know what that feels like.
Three different trips to the clinic, three different doctors, three different diagnosis.   That is why they .. practice.
Knocked it out with antibiotics.

Hope you heal up well, and completely!!!

HAY !

That look like something I know a lot about .   Did your Dr. call it "cellulitis" ?

YouzGuyz please tell me "That's an old picture"

That .4% Lidocaine HCI Topical Anesthetic makes the itch go-a-way in the day time .
but
I've been putting a no stick bandage on it before going to sleep , because you know its going to itch.

So , Lancer called it " Flesh eatting bacteria " , if that's true then we must have serived a Zombie attack   ?

Is that one of the thrill features of the Twisted Sister Run ????    Zombie leg attacks ????

:-?

A low moaning sound is coming from the cabin  as Neil and MM mutter in unison  -----

" b-b-b-b-b-b-brains .......   b-b-b-b-b-b-brains .......  b-b-b-b-b-b-brains .......  b-b-b-b-b-b-brains ......."

Lancer responds from a deep sleep ......

" b-b-b-b-b-b-bigger jets,   more power .......     b-b-b-b-b-b-bigger piston,  more power .......
 b-b-b-b-b-b-brains .......      b-b-b-b-b-b-bigger compresson,   more power .......    b-b-b-b-b-b-brains .......     h-h-h-h-h-hotter cam,  more power .....

Cellulitis was one of the things it was called.. which is a global term for "we think you have a skin infection, we don't know what caused it, we don't know what kind of bugs are in there, we think they may be zombie related"
It was also called sepsis (blood infection)
It was also called an infected bug/snake/bear/armadillo/zombie bite.. which would manifest as cellulitis or sepsis.
Not near as nasty as yours.  :o

This was last July.. just after the 4th.

Like you, I was crippled for a while.  Crutches then cane.  Swelling in my ankle/foot and knee (but no redness there).  Total screaming agony when I first stood up.. then hobble a few steps.. then OK.  Weird.
Mine never really itched very much.
Were you nauseated the day before the leg started looking weird?
I was.

Were you nauseated the day before the leg started looking weird?
I was

OoooYaaa

March 1st 102 deg fever
         2 + 3 rd104 deg. fever , passing out and dizziness
Then on the 3rd + 4th  Redness and Swelling starts and I head to the urgent care center .

On the 4th I started the first 10 day round of meds , and have two more 10 day rounds to finish as it stands now.
The first time this happened was 13 years ago and it set me on the road to medical retirement (all day walking on concrete).

Good new is :  I walked around the house a little today with no crutches , cane , or anything but going slow !  :)

It ain't nothing to take lightly .
