Title: Turn signal mods
Post by Tpot on 02/13/18 at 18:55:10

I have searched the forum for possible mods to the OEM turn signals on my 95 savage with no luck. I'm looking to replace them with lights that don't stick out as far. If you know where I can be directed to find the right thread that would be great or if you guys had any other ideas that you have done and would be willing to share. Thanks.

there's a lot in the tech section index (link below)

sometimes eyeballs work better than the search tool.

The little "magnifying glass" in the top right corner of the page is worthless, the "SEARCH" button that opens up a search pages works really well.

You do have to fill in some information that tells where and how far back to look.

best way to search for almost anything is the Google trick.  Enter your search criteria followed by "site:suzukisavage.com" without the quotes.  No spaces.  Works for any site.

I used signals from a Dyna Glide.  Straight bolt on in the back, used the brackets that go around the brake reservoir on the Harley and drilled them out to I believe it was 3/8 to bolt them to the front bracket.

Dime City Cycle has a ton of turn indicators...I really like the mini(s).  Some imagination and the right parts you'll be a happy scooter pilot.

I recently installed some "mini-bullet" turn signals on the licence plate bracket. They came with some rubber 'washers' which I assume are supposed to dampen the vibration. But it vibrates a lot back there! It shook the bulb holder right off the housing (admittedly, I did earth the lights by wrapping the wire under the internal bracket that holds the bulb to the housing). In the end I added a buffer of silicone between the bulb mount and the housing. so far, so good.

What I am saying is: It vibrates a lot back there!

As the official resident safety nut..........it is my duty to caution you about buying cheap LED turns signals that most likely will come from China.  Any turn signal that uses the tiny mass produced LED bulbs will not be bright enough to be visible in sunlight.  Turn signals like these are pretty much worthless.

Sport Bike Squids remove their stock turn signals and install tiny (non visible) turn signals.....you can often get the stock turn signals cheap on eBay, and they are DOT approved and very good turn signals.  You can search using the bike model and the words "OEM" or "Take Off" or "Factory".  You can likely also find good Harley take off turn signals, as those fellows like to customize their bikes as well.  The factory turns signals are likely much better made, more visible and more durable than any aftermarket turn signals that are affordable.

Amen Dave. I just removed the fairing on my FZ6, converting into a FZ6N. The previous owner (a friend of my son) replaced the OEM turn signals with flush mounted LED units. Everyone I rode with told me that they couldn't see my directionals, regardless of ambient light conditions. So during my conversion I wired up some good ol' fashioned directionals with actual tungsten light bulbs. Truth be told, they look great on the bike AND they actually perform their primary function - alerting other motorists of my intentions.

I would like to have my rear turn signals also be running lights. That requires red lenses also. Don't care if they are LED or not.  Any suggestions ?

What you are looking for are three-wire turn signals. One one is the ground, another is the running light and the third is the turn signal.

I added the Kuryakyn run-turn-brake lights (4-wire) to mine - they are pricey ($90/set) but they are quality, very bright and have the look I wanted. I also added an LED flasher unit from sueprbrightLEDs, cost $10. It's required to get the correct flashing rate (alternatively you can  wire in resistors, but since I went LEDs all around the flasher was a better solution - plus it was a 2 minute install).

Dave is spot on about the visibility of LEDs. I installed an (expensive) set of LEDs and was very disappointed with the visibility - it didn't feel safe at all. I found another set of signals with the same housings but with DOT rated bulbs - and they cost me a lot less. The piece of mind , and the actual safety is worth it.

I've also followed a friend on a sports bike who ran cheap, mini turn signals. He may as well have left them off altogether!

Just would like to mention, laws depending on where you live might make the bullets illegal.
