Most Intel processors released in the past decade are vulnerable to the recently disclosed Meltdown and Spectre security vulnerabilities, and that’s a problem. But shortly after Intel had released a microcode update to mitigate the risk, users started noticing that their computers were unexpectedly shutting off (crashing) more often than before.

Intel’s solution: don’t install that microcode update, and instead wait for a newer update that’s less likely to crash your PC.

Now Microsoft has released a Windows update designed to remove that Intel fix from most computers running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later. It’s available from the Microsoft Update Catalog (meaning that it’s not rolling out through automatic updates yet, but you can download and install it manually).

This is a rare “out of band” update from Microsoft, which means that it’s an unscheduled, emergency software update that isn't being sent out in the nightly offerings as it isn't suitable to be re-re-re-done nightly many many times as are lots of updates that are automatically done by Windows Update.

This is your chance to roll back the pernicious Intel patches and be "like you were before" pending some sort of real fix from Intel.

But YOU have to go do it as MS cannot -- it must be done once under manual user control.

Illnesses associated with the bad Intel patch are a 25% slowdown and repeated rebooting of your machine during heavy workloads.

So, go here and get it off your machine.

How do I know if this Intel "patch" was installed on my win 7 HP machine? I'm very reluctant to update anything, and my machine still operates at a semi reasonable speed by my standards.

If you allow MS access to "update" your machine at night, then you likely have gotten the patch in the December-January time frame.

If you disallow MS access to your machine and require manual authorization of all updates, then you should KNOW which items you permitted MS to put on to your machine. (ie keep a list on a piece of paper)

You, you may need to start over.

Go here, get this, see if you are Vulnerable or if you have perhaps been patched up poorly previously. If it says you are Protected, then somebody snuck you the bad patches while your back was turned and you now don't even know what you have on your machine.

Many casual MS users are in this boat -- MS runs their machines at night for them ......

Read the warnings -- if you are using an old version of anybody's AntiVirus you may get issues with your Anti-Virus going crazy on you while you do this .... UPDATE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS AND RESCAN YOUR MACHINE BEFORE STARTING THIS PROCESS.

OR JUST WAIT for the big spring 2018 SPRING UPGRADE, MS will likely scrape your whole housekeeping section and lay down a totally fresh set of slightly stinky sticky Mickey Stuff ..... perhaps fixing what they did this winter, perhaps not ..... you can never tell.

Answer these two questions:

Do you have a 25% slowdown in operating speed?

Do you have "repeated spontaneous rebooting" going on with your machine?

Do you think MS didn't patch you because you are on Win 7 still and are not under maintenance any more? Guess again ..... MS still patches your machine at night whenever THEY want to for whatever reason they consider "good enough".

And surprise !!!! This one is MS backing off a bad patch THAT WAS PUT OUT BY INTEL who was using MS's system to push it out to "all users" thus making MS liable for the stinky mess too ....... so you can see why Mickey wants it pulled off your machine before you join a class action suit against them.
