Title: Wheres the oil
Post by seve321 on 01/21/18 at 07:56:53

I just did an oil change on my bike, and I 've changed the oil before. I added 2 quarts, stood the bike up and checked the sight glass. when do, there's no oil in the glass. where is all the oil going? I made sure there was no oil on the ground.

Did you change the filter? If not 2 qts over filled the motor, and the level may be above the sight class ,and being new it may appear clear and your looking through it if you haven't started the bike. If you did change the filter ,the same thing may have happened ,if you haven't started the bike because the level won't drop until the motor has started and filled the oil filter and passages. place the bike back on the sidestand and see if the level doesn't drop back in to the very top of the glass, or open the filler cap and poke a piece of wire down inside the motor like a dip stick to make sure of the oil level before starting. You can't really know the oil level until after you've run the motor.

I changed the filter and started the motor but only for about a minute. I was nervous about having no oil and burning up the motor. ? I'll stick something in there and check it that wy thanks.

Open the oil filler and be sure you don't smell gas.  If your carb float stuck the crank case could have filled with gas and made it hard to see in the sight glass.

Yeah that's the reason I changed the oil in the first place. I was worried about gas in the oil. I worked on the carb before changing the oil though.

I am betting that you are looking right through the clean oil in sight glass.  The sight glass and the motorcycle have plenty of oil in them.  Drain some oil and see if it does not appear in the sight glass.  I have done it multiple times.

just tip the bike till you see/don't see oil... may need some one else to read or tip the bike.

even if you changed the filter, there should some residual that will color the oil.

I believe on the case it says 2400cc, so you might need a little more.
measure in the vertical position.

too much oil?  remove the timing inspection port, on the side stand it will come out.

If it's not on the ground, then it's in the engine. Make sure you have two empty bottles. [ch128512]

Thanks for help guys. I'm pretty sure Johnny has it right on. I think I'm looking through the oil. The last time I changed the oil I forgot to stand up the bike to get the last bit out so I saw that dark color. I'm not used to seeing clean oil  ;D

Vercy's right ,if you drain the bike completely it would require 2400 cc /2.5Qts.

To update everyone, verslagen was right. I had to add about .5qts to get it to show in the sight glass.
