I am finishing up the stator repair. As I am putting the sprocket cover back on, I noticed some shallow circular scrapes inside the cover, obviously put there by the sprocket rubbing on the cover. see the pic

Have any of you had this happen? If so, what causes the problem, and how do you fix it?

The only thing I can come up with is to put shims (washers) between the case and the three mounting surfaces around the three bolts, to move the sprocket cover away from the case the thickness of a washer,.. maybe .050"

That pulley has never been off. The bike only has several thousand miles on it.

How's the cover lining up with the case?
Where are the rubber spacers?
Can you wiggle the sprocket?

JOG covered it, but I'd take it in reverse order ,Make sure the sprocket is torqued (94 ft/lbs ) first.so as not to damage the splines on it and the shaft. That and the cam chain tensioner coming apart are the two worst thing that can happen to your motor.

If your cover is rubbing - then something is allowing it to move too far inboard.

The thicker rubber cushions go on the inside.....the thinner ones go on the outside.

Just an after thought but just because the pulley has never been off doesn't mean it can't loosen, I paint a thin white stripe across the nut and pulley so I can look through the guard to check it once in a while.
