Hello, I have an 1986 Savage 650 that I have fixed. Engine broke in summer and I had to find a replacement from another bike. I finally found a decently priced 1988 Savage(whole bike) that had only a broken Ignition coil. Replaced all the neccessary parts that were worn out in the new engine (clutch, valve rockers, cam chain and tensioner) Now finally I put back together in the 1986 frame. Poured oil in and tried cranking it up...Nothing, only decomp was clicking and starter solenoid was buzzing a bit...
We tried two different batteries, still nothing. :-/

I wanted to ensure that I have the starter motor correcly wired. As far as I know I have everything connected like the manuals says. So can someone show how its connected properly. :-[

Did you try your coil to confirm that the 88 ran before you did the swap?

Yeah, It ran perfectly after we switched the broken coil.(didn't give any spark). I think here is the problem that I don't know how the connections from starter motor goes. from where does the starter motor exactly get power?

The starter motor gets the power from the starter relay.

Did you have the left engine cover off? If so.....you may have put the washers on the idler gear in the wrong place. This locks up the starter idler gears, and prevents the starter from being able to turn when you push the button.

Have you tried a volt meter to confirm power is/isn't getting to the starter when the solenoid is buzzing. It could be the solenoid is stuck and is not sending power to the starter.

Dave it's an '88... it doesn't have one of those.

Try a cable direct from the battery to the starter.
Check the ground to the engine case.

You should also check the ground wire ,it runs from the right side of the motor case ,just above the oil level window ,back to the neg. battery post ,it must be clean and tight to complete the circuit ,to the starter motor.

Thank you all for of your replies, I had remembered the cable wrong that goes into the starter...Human error as always :-[ , now the engine turns good and next stop is just putting exhaust pipe on and gas in 8-)

You don't have to be embarrassed, we've ALL learned from our mistakes, and by asking others who knew a bit more .
