Title: engine mounting
Post by sandmanred on 12/16/17 at 10:23:52

As my garage built frame sits now the engine is pitched forward about 3 degrees when I measure the angle of the fins relative to the ground.  Any worries about the engine oil level or any other concerns about having it pitched forward a bit from stock?

As an example if you assume the fins are level on a stock bike having them 3 degrees down is approximately like lowering the front of the bike about 3 inches.

Error in your silhouette?

If new side plates would fix the issue, I would.
But, I'd get a reading off one of the cafe bikes.
They do cant it forward... just don't know how much.

A measured oil fill and note the

There's your

No worries. The cafe racer conversions sit at an angle well in excess of 3 degrees forward.

Immediately above the fill window is the aluminum shelf that shields the crank itself from splashing down in the oil bath.

As long as the upright held running (idling) oil level shows at the top of the window with a little air still showing, you are fine.  If it goes above the window at idle, hot, held vertical then you are overfilled.

Lots of the old guys know that "following the owner's manual method" puts you relatively low on oil and a little oil consumption can then put you TOO LOW on oil very easily.

Individually, we determine a cold side stand level that is ideal (equal to bike held vertical, hot, at idle with the oil level at the top of the window or less).   Remember, that oil expands some when it gets hot.   After we get that all sussed out, checking your oil is dirt easy to do.   A quick glance is all that is required.

Good suggestions.  This Ryca kit pitches it forward close to 6 degrees from level so I think with the suggestions on checking oil I should be OK.  Thanks again.

Dont even worry about it as long as you can see oil part way up the sight glass , + or - an ounce or two of oil won't make a difference.

If you see bubbles in the oil, it's over full.
