Title: Cam or Big Bore ?
Post by RazBarlow on 12/14/17 at 05:00:38

I have a torque addiction over top speed , if I have a top speed of 70-75mph that is fine by me .
Which is the best thump for the buck ?
Cam or Big Bore ?

I am not afraid of a front wheel lift , if that is possible on a savage  ;D

That is tough choice - the best answer is both.....they both compliment each other and create a great engine.

The cam is easier to install, as the engine can stay in the frame.  You should also get a Versy head plug to prevent a future oil leak, and a new Nitrided cam chain while you are in there.

The piston takes a lot more work, as the engine has to come out of the frame.  It doesn't have to be a big bore....the stock size 94mm Wiseco that Lancer sells has the  higher compression does make a noticeable power boost.  Once again the Versy head plug makes sense (you could wait on the Nitrided cam chain - as you likely will be adding the better camshaft later).

It sounds like you're relatively satisfied already,... I'd go with a cam...
Real wheel lift is just a  matter of sitting back on the seat... (even mopeds can wheelie).... ;D

I already know that scooters can wheelie, mine does just fine  8-)

The cams we use to increase power,  are by most standards ,mild compared to other bikes because of our rather poor exhaust channel in the head, this is not to say a cam alone won't add a higher torque at a higher rpm and a bit more hP,( and is much easier to install )without using a higher compression piston. But a higher compression /larger piston will give you much more, even with a stock cam. If you really like torque and are not worried about dropping your top speed from 85 to 75 you might be able to effect that change by going to chain drive, trying different sprockets until you find what ratio you like.

Just bite the bullet now , big bore/higher compression , port the head , stage 3 cam , get the rockers hard welded , 36mm VM mikuni , header !
That way you won't be saying "I should have"  ;D

I can agree with everything - except hardwelding the rockers.  The later style (2005 and later) rockers with the hardened seats are cheaper than having the hardweld done, and they work great.

And I do not disagree , but those 2 piece rockers make me nervous , so I went with the hard welding. The price is much lower. One less thing for me to worry about while blasting down some backroad in the middle of nowhere !

no mods needed for front wheel lift
