Title: Savage Events for 2018 and other ramblings.
Post by verslagen1 on 12/09/17 at 14:36:43

Last year http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1472962902/0

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION RIGHT UP TO THE GO DAY -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET COMPLETELY YET UNTIL IT IS OVER.     Plugging your name in to show your interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is really going plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

So far we got the following items left in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a firm date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Here's what we did last year...

Lancer Oklahoma trip

Kickstand Lodge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZGNOB5m5Ro&t=166s
http://kickstandlodge.com/rates.html
From here it is a short hop up to the Dragon, and to all the really neat surrounding roads we love to ride.    For East Coast beginners, this is one of the closest (and the BEST) Southeastern trip possible.   Some have argued the area is the BEST BIKING IN AMERICA and I might have to agree with them.

MM's farm

Still in planning...
Indian Paintbrush Campground near Denver

Twisted Sister Run

Black Hills

And here is a tool to use in locating some no cost camping when travelling to get to the rides:

OK, we got a list up there at the top copied from 1-2 years ago when we were in our "trip rich" heyday.   Everyone put down everything they could think of for a desireable trip, then we got lots of folks who upvoted the trips then when the time came then harsh reality proceeded to set in.

We learned that "the big announced dates" had a natural issue or two.  Bad weather took out about half the trips and the folks that had to put in vacation long in advance had some other issues to deal with due to doing reschedule after reschedule.

Me, personally,  I had to re-re-schedule vacation days so often it started to be treated as a joke by my supervisors at work.   The MM Ranch trip, heck,  they just abruptly cut that one off at the knees because school was in session and we had a rescheduled football game that weekend.   I was left holding 40 pounds of chicken in the freezer that had been planned for the trip.

I was told by my management "to go some other time" ....     :P

We had trips rained out after paying for renting a cabin, we had honchos who were not able to get free to go on "their trips" that had list members signed up for them, we had "you name it" for diffferent issues crop up over the course of the year.

The oddest malady was two trips that had honchos that simply would not assign a firm date to the trips, which caused the trips to fail, naturally.

So, the big list had some issues as a way of setting up trips.

What did seem to work was the folks who wanted to go somewhere communicating directly by phone or PM.   These wound up being smaller trips of 3-4 people but they always came off and were successful.

So, understanding there are some issues with the "Big List" approach if you live close to some neat riding or some interesting event type stuff and want to honcho a group trip, speak up.   We will see if anyone wishes to do that trip and then you guys can beat out the details by phone, or PM or by on list discussion.

MM has said that he, Lancer and Verslagen have a tentative plan for a longer trip to go ride the Black Hills and has invited me to go.  I told him yes, but I have no details from him as to when or where beyond the group will be meeting up at Lancer's farm.   Contact person is MM.

Dave wants to do some shorter Wed-Sunday trips keying around roaming out from the Kickstand Lodge.  These trips are generally pleasurable and successful as there are many many many favorite roads in that area to explore.   Dave will have more to say on these when the time comes.

For the first long "retired guy" trip of the year, MM and I have discussed rolling down the Natchez Trace, then following a dotted line around the Gulf hopping from campground to campground, then messing about in Florida some.   This will be early in the year and you can tell we are rolling south purposefully to get to some warmer balmy weather as chronic ride starvation syndrome is a real thing by the tag end of winter ......  If we wanted to include the Thunder Beach Run in early MAY that would be OK as a ride through and look at it sort of thing.

It gets cold along the southern route too, maybe not as much as TN and NC, but cold anyway.  For balmy it is S. TX and S. FL, NM, AZ & S. CA.

Made an edit, hope that's what you intended.

This ride does have some issues with rain and a wee bit nippy but not too bad.  The cabins at Kerrville in April are easy to get... I don't think we need to put a reservation in far in advance... a couple of weeks would be fine.  MMR could consult his almanac and get a fairly reasonable date along with accuweather.

I've enjoyed the two trips to S.Texas , and got rained on both times , I wonder if we went a week later if the rain would be over ?   I've got  a good rain suit either way ...

I have a different GPS and have forgot the name of the town we used as "home-base" .

Two long days to get into the area , ride around for 4-5 days and two days back . ...  Now that's a real ride !  ;)     I need to get a bike sticker from the Sisters this time .

.......................................

I found it : http://kerrvilletx.gov/318/Kerrville-Schreiner-Park

$50.oo + tax / day per 6 people .   That is some "easy to live with rent" to my way of thinking.

Just a thought, but would there be interest in something in Jersey or the Northeast? I am at the Jersey shore. I know Gary, is located in what I would refer to as central Jersey, Armen, northeast. Plenty of places to go and see.

SOC, what you do is think of the areas that you like to do up where you live.   Then you find a place to put a tent or enough rug to park 2-3 guys.

It isn't hard to put a trip together ......   just talk some about the places you'd like to go to.

Gary_from_NJ and I are planning to get together somewhere in PA for a weekend.  No date or location has yet been selected.  The local experienced riders/travelers claim the PA roads are generally in poor shape, and they tend to schedule trips in other areas - we chose PA as it is a reasonable drive for both Gary and I.

I'm thinking the northern part of WV to the SW corner of PA - right in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. This would be something I would trailer my bike(s) to. I'm happy with primitive camping...but I'm even happier to have a bathroom and running water.

Gary:

Road trips on the Cafe' bike are not really possible, and I would be hauling my Cafe' bike in a trailer as well.  My enclosed trailer provides my sleeping area...although I could also bring a tent.  A campground with a bath and shower is a necessity - I really don't like going to bed without first taking a shower!

So what's in a name :

Don't miss the great start to the Spring Rally Season.

I highly recommend this Rally.  Curtis and Tanna are two of the nicest folks that you'd ever want to meet.  Food is delicious and the deserts are out of this world.  The large wooded venue features meadow and piney woods campsites.  Large pavilion and full bar.
Plenty to do in the area including visiting an early German settlement and the Bonnie and Clyde ambush site and museum.  Good riding through the North Louisiana pines.

Apr 20 to Apr 22, 2018
LOUISIANA MGNOC STATE RALLY

Come pass a good time with us at the Valhalla Motorcycle Campground in Homer, Louisiana. Will be kick-en tires and tell-en lies in the beautiful piney woods of North Louisiana . Camping is FREE! But you must buy your adult beverages from the Valhalla Bar that is located on the premises, NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL ALLOWED ON PREMISES. Special package prices for beer and liquor will be available for camp-side consumption. dinners for the weekend will be provided by Curtis and Tanna for a cost $40 and you will pay them directly when you are ready to eat (payments must be cash or credit card only [ch65533] No personal checks). You are responsible for all of your other meals at the rally. Valhalla Motorcycle Campground offers lots of open or shaded camping area with two showers and a group campfire area (That's where all that kick-en tires and tell-in lies takes place). The bar has a large covered pavilion overlooking a fishing pond. Valhalla Motorcycle Campground is located at 3000 Dutchtown Road, Homer Louisiana 71040. Check them out at www.valhalla-mc.com. For more info contact: Louisiana State Rep. Mark Perry at 337-523-2518
............................................................................

got it on the Guzzi site , but I'm sure any Bikers would be welcome , anybody been there ?

If its going to be a rain free weekend , we can use my house as a stage ing area , if its on your way ... $40.oo for three nice dinners ain't too bad , and free camping too !   :)

Might be something annual ?

MM,

Go to Google maps, hit the hamburger symbol on the upper left, change the map view to satellite view and then you can easily see if there is any riding worth having in any given area.

Louisiana not so much I am afraid ....   but the campground being right in the middle of town seemed interesting enough, till you satellite view to see there isn't much to the town to the town in the first place.

Yep, on satellite view a squiggly road running up through some rather rough terrain generally signals good riding.

===================================================

You and Dave need to PM one another and decide who is doing the main week long farm trip this year.

Stewmills and I both managed to miss Dave's last year   ;)   and I got plumb cheated out of MM's by my ex-bosses at work.   I like MM's because the shooting is always relatively easy and close by but Dave's sure has more curvey sweeper type roads than you can shake a stick at .....   and his garage space is to die for.    If you bring your ultra lite cheat'n rig you can play with them itty bitty miniature catfish out in his pond, too.

(something to like at each place, in other words).

There was no "Dave's Farm" last year - I only did that in 2016.  We need to give the catfish time to regenerate another bumper crop.

Wait, how long does it take for miniature 2' long catfish to regenerate anyway ????

I thought you said that they had already repopulated good enough when you walked to the edge with that scoop of fishy feed and did a rough poll count on 'um by seeing how much the water boiled when the feed it it.

It is a small pond; not much room for the hundreds of fish in there.

We were not very nice to them little pet ornamental fishies that were living in Dave's pond.

Hey ya'll. I have to be home on April 25 for my son's birthday but other than that count me in on the Twisted Sisters ride. That one I would like to think is pretty much a given for me.

I would like to do at least one of the further away rides, MM's, Dave's, Black Hills. Once tentative dates are available I should be able to commit.

At this point - I just can't commit to being able to host a group ride at my house in 2018.  In 2017 I spent way too much time at work, and my home upkeep suffered....I need to spend a lot of time this spring/summer catching up on the neglected stuff.  I was at work 12 ours most days, and it just didn't leave enough time or energy for the work that should have been done at home.  Also my mother is turning 90 at the end of February, and she has finally admitted she needs to move off the family farm where she lives alone.  I just don't know what it will take to get her moved, or when it will happen.

If I end up missing a group ride I can do that easily - provided that the ride is not at my house!

Maybe if I can get a lot done in the spring/summer.....I can have a weekend ride based at my house in late summer.

I will plan on hosting a ride from my place in 2019. :)

Shoot and Scoot ?

Day-Ride every day ?

Road Kill on the Grill every evening ? (or what ever we bring home)

I think I'm beginning to like this !

Coffee every morning ?

Breakfast at Woodards soon as everybody is up and about ?

Fast Food for lunch .

Swinging target Spinning with 22LR/pelets.

Iron target clanging on the hill side .

Hay this could be Fun !   8-)

Some time just sitting in the Shade  .

Bunk-house w/skippy Wi-Fi or Net-Flicks  every evening.

:)

I'm going to have to get an Almanac to check the long range weather !  ::)

I am not sure why there needs to be a "farm" trip - the Kick Stand Lodge, Two Wheels of Suches, Blue Ridge Motorcycle campground all offer good affordable places to stay, showers, nearby places to get food when the campground isn't serving and great places to ride......and at the Kickstand we likely could use the grill if we wanted to cook a breakfast.  The only think lacking at the campground is the ability to go shooting off the back porch.

Yes, it is closer to most of the folks and has more stuff to do (classical shoot and scoot stuff).

This time I cannot be stopped from coming by my somewhat abrupt and uncaring ex-bosses, either.

May come in a day early to get the guns sighted back in correctly for the tilt angle and distances to be covered.   Folks plinking should hit what they are shooting at .....

Will only bring mild plinking ammo, since the hot stuff tends to hurt people's eyebrows when they try to crawl inside the scope bell and get all surprised that the triggers are somewhat lighter than they are used to.

You fellers get them bikes ready to ride this winter and hopefully we can actually find the Natchez Trace this year .

I remember this is the Savage Site , but feel free to bring what ever bike ya want to.  8-)   I should have the Harley sold by time dry summer weather has sets in and be ridding the S-40 90+% of the time.

That sports  "R"  tire on the guzzi only has a little over 3,000 miles on it and is noticeable worn ... (sports Demon) , it's looking like 6000 miles will have it looking kin to an onion ...  and I almost NEVER use the rear break .   That rear  tire is going to be gone too fast anyway  ;D .     The tires on my S-40 (commander II R + 888 F) seem like they are going to last forever.  :)  , Front break only on it too.  ;) especially now with that dual piston caliper Dave sent me !  It will almost do a Stop-ie  ::)

I'm sorta thinking of going to the :  http://www.valhalla-mc.com/

camp ground on the 20-22 of  April .    and since its almost 1/2 way to South Texas anyway ... go on the Kerryville from there .

So how about (weather permiting) starting the Kerryville camping cabin on the Monday 23rd April ?

If its a Rainy April ... I'm OK with up to - the middle of May too .  By the last of May Texas may be hot and I need to cut hay about the last of May also.

Right after I cut hay would be a good time to be throwing lead at the targets up on the hillside hay field too.   ;)   I could wait till the first part of June to cut hay if the weather (or my schule)  don't coroperate .

I want to go to Suches Ga. at least once.
The Dragon area a couple times.
The Long Ride on the Natchez Trace.

I'd like to do a ride to the Black-Hill area , but ... dang ... its a long way.   Maybe , in August right after the Surges Rally ???
If I went to Lancer's on day one ... It seems like we should have a Savage friendly place to end day two at.   Then the Black Hills (finally) on day three .   Ride the area for four days and then three days back home.    My wife may forget what I look like !!!
six   Ten days on the road but I'm going to make it home tonight !  ;D

April/May for the Texas Hill Country sounds good to me. If you get started on the 20th of April I may only be able to join you until the 26th, but a few days riding is better than none.

August for the Black Hills sounds doable to me.

The route I would take from northern Kentucky is far north of Oklahoma, and it would likely double my travel time to go that far south along the way.

When I did a Mapquest search on this a while back - our routes didn't cross until Omaha - which is 12 hours into a 20 hour trip for you....about 11 hours for me.  My experience with Mapquest is that those travel times don't provide for any stops - so the trip most likely would be a 3 day affair on a bike that has to stop for fuel every 100 miles (you may be able to go a little farther with your new tank, my Honda can go about 250 miles).  That route is all interstate travel.

I don't believe I am going to be a participant - but if I did I would likely haul the bike out on a trailer and perhaps bring Deb.  We could make good time traveling in the car, then unload the bike and ride the fun stuff.

A trip to Suches GA could occur in very late April.....if done at that time of year the weather "can" be 50 degree nights and 70 degree days - but it can also be 20 degrees colder.  The weather would definitely create a go/no go situation.  The middle of May is consistently warmer....I have not yet found a listing of the rain chances for those months to know if the weather is wet or dry.

Next time I see an Almanac I'll bring it home with me , and then see if the long dry spell in Texas is the same time as the long dry warm spell in Suches  .

Dave , that Ride-Report you did from Suches has me dueling  :P  :)
I'm thing that ride might finish off the original Guzzi rear tire.

It appears that the Suches weather becomes suitable after mid May, when night time temperatures are consistently above 50.  There could be a weekend that is above normal - we won't know that until a few days before - but a trip could be arranged with little warning if the weather allows.

http://i67.tinypic.com/16jr91s.jpg

The dry weather for Suches seems to be pretty consistent between May through September.  I don't believe the afternoon pop up showers are quite as consistent as they are in the Blue Ridge mountains - however summer heat can create those storms just about anywhere.

http://i66.tinypic.com/ehzytk.jpg

Two Wheels of Suches has what appears to be a Suzuki VX800 rally on the May 18 weekend - no other weekend in May has a special event scheduled.
http://twowheelsofsuches.com/

I suggest we just watch the weather as May 2018 approaches....and also watch what you fellows are doing about rides to TX, LA, FL, etc.  The Suches trip can occur anytime this spring/summer that weather allows.

May 18th, a Barcalounger Congregation.  A Barcalounger is just a Savage 400 sporting an extra jug after all.   Suzuki all the way .....

In any case, I would certainly blend right in with the crowd .....       ;D

I would be interested in riding to some of these events if in riding distance from SC.

Will these events be published somewhere by date and location when finalized?

Thanks!

I want to catch the Suches ride, but I am committed the weekend of the 18th but it could maybe work? I have my annual veteran's group ride in Robbinsville that weekend but now have a graduation to attend on Saturday the 19th. That means I will only be able to ride Thursday and Friday (17th and 18th). Maybe I can ride with the veterans in Robbinsville one day and then scoot down and ride with the Savages the other day.

If not for the graduation I would be there thru late Sunday.  >:(

Suches weekend of the 18th versus the 25th?

Hmmmm. Wondering if I can get away two weekends in a row. May is also my anniversary so I will probably have a long weekend before the 18th. Then I will be in Robbinsville for the veterans ride the 17th (if I take off Thu and Fri) as we have reservations all set. Coming right back the next weekend might be hard.  Even though I would only get to ride with each group one day (Veterans on Thu and Savages on Fri) it almost makes it easier for me to double down and just do that.

I took my virgin Scenic Inspirations calendar and marked May 18th and 25th as alternate rain dates for "Suches, Ga".   Whichever, whatever you guys finally decide on is fine by me.  I am in.

===================================================

Now, if you are talking about the long long trip to the Black Hills, that one needs to jell a bit before I can make any final decisions.   You and Versy are used to riding in a truck for 2-3 days just to get somewhere to ride, but that is totally new turf for me.

I reviewed the YouTube stuff on what is out there and it is nice enough once you get there, but it is bare/normal 4 lanes all the rest of the way out and back again.

Stringing Mount Rushmore/Black Hills together with Yellowstone, Pike's Peak and Lancers in a big big loop format makes it more appealing though.

A Big Big Big bucket trip loop .......

It would work out better for Stewmills if we could do the Suches trip the first weekend in June.  It would be a shame not to do it when he could come, as he is only 3 hours away.

If you want a May trip......we could try something else like the Kickstand Lodge.  Up here the weather in May is iffy....it can be 37 and rainy or 70 and dry - you just never know.

I can wait till June for a Suches ride .   The Texas ride will be the last of April or fist part of May.

June for Suches

July ?

August  Cody or Black Hills

September make up with the Wife for being gone all Summer
[ch128560]

OldFeller , I've only "not rode one time" , that first trip to Texas ... It was raining when I left the house and rained all the way to north Texas , then we rode our bikes to south Texas in the rain ... But the rest of the week was great. [ch128513]

Versey ,  KOA $50.00 for a tent spot seems excessive to me ,  some folks leave their car/truck parked in Walmart parking lot for carpooling.

It is 23oF in Fayetteville, NC.   All the little green shoots on the trees and bushes will be nipped off, all brown and sere after this one.   Jack Frost has finally done got 'em.

It is the heart of winter and we are all looking forward to the first rides of the new Season.

I am recovering now from my prostrate mess.   I am no longer incontinent.   "Accidents" are becoming very small and extremely rare so I am no longer wearing the absorption pads.

I actually believe them now that I will recover the rest of the way back to normal.    yea !!

Sorry MM, no more plans for hooking up any Bionic Biker plumbing.    Instead, I got a lazy man plan to flip on the main gas tank around 150 miles, let the 3.5 gallons of gas move down the lines into the bags by gravity,  then whenever a short timer needs a gas stop, cut the main tank valve off and fill the top main tank back up and take me a piss stop.

That way I can stop with the group, keep my tanks "mostly filled" and only have to operate the tank valve to control everything.    I think this idea will work well when riding with a mixed group of Savagers.

I'm thinking SD in August ,

What do ya'll think of a week or two before or after Serges Ralley.   Maybe I should keep the Harley with its 4.5 gal and 50-55 mpg.   Or , just plan on taking the Guzzi , 5.5 gals. same mpg.

I don't object to riding through town to look at bike week, but staying there is mission impossible as all rooms, campgrounds and open ditches are all booked solid.

There are free campgrounds in the surrounding forest service areas (40 minutes away). but only two $12 pay me sites have a hot shower available.   Got bear problems with one of them and the tent areas have been shut down as the local bruins have learned that nylon tents open up at will if you happen to own claws .....

I have the NT700, it is a V-Twin, shaft drive, it has mid mount pegs and it is a great bike.  The CTX700 is a parallel twin, chain drive, forward mount pegs and it has a low seat heat and the weight is low and well balanced.....it sits more like a cruiser than my bike does - it is also a great bike.  My ST1100 was a great bike and had 110HP and was also a great bike and a super bargain in a used motorcycle - but it has a tall seat height, it's a long bike, and is pretty darn heavy.  All of them can go almost 300 miles on a tank of fuel at highway speeds - at 40 mph backroad speeds they can potentially get close to 400 miles!

As a S. Fl resident I will advise if you go to anywhere in Dade county (Miami) it will be VERY helpful if you can speak Spanish.

Badwolf, where is a local place to camp that you could recommend?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018
Post by badwolf on 01/01/18 at 08:57:11

Down here along the coast they call it the GOLD coast for a reason!
I would recommend looking at the state parks toward the center of the state. The coast is built-up out the ying-yang with the traffic and all that goes with it. There are a couple of wildlife areas not too far away with VERY primitive camping, but anything commercial is high priced and packed that time of year. And the roads and traffic are nothing close to enjoyable riding.
Guys I know here trailer to Daytona, unload in the hotel parking lot, ride for 4-5 hours, for a total of 6-8 miles, load back up, and get drunk and pregnant dog about the traffic! Daytona Bike Week is all about the social experience and partying. The riding is not much to get excited about, unless you like duckwalking in stop and sit traffic. You need to get about 10 miles away from the strip before you can really move. And I doubt the road work on the I-95 - I-4 interchange will be done this year. It's been on-going for about 2 years. Ed L lives just south of there and could give you some tips about Daytona from a local's point of view.
The center of the state is not built up as much and the county roads are better to ride than the packed state highways. But Fla. has a LOT of flat mostly straight roads. Don't bring the Cafe bike, you will just get board and a sore butt. Ride something comfy you can sit on most of the day and look at the orange groves, cows, phosphate mines, and woods. And CRITTERS! We have all kinds of roadkill here, opossums to  hogs to cows! Not all bad, I have seen at least 5 eagles in the last month. (live, not roadkill) 4 black wild hogs on the roadside watched me go by yesterday. Night riding in rural areas here can be,,,,,,exciting! A real good headlight is recommended.
Fla. in the winter and early spring is great for getting out of the snow, but we have no Dragon Tail, or challenging curvy roads. But stay away from the tourist traps and enjoy the easy cruising and warm weather.

pregnant dog,,, I love the filters!

Correct spelling is sonofabitch, biach or bitche  (whatever the filter won't stop).

I prefer "miserable sonofabitch" personally.

Here is a place that is 100 yards off the paved road in the recommended Central Florida behind an always locked gate that has hot showers and toilets and is large enough to have folks around all the time to watch your stuff while you are off riding and it is totally FREE.    It has attendants who periodically sweep the park to make sure you really have a reservation and to keep the riff-raff, thieves and vandals out of your stuff.

It even has cellular coverage !!!!    It is far enough away that during Bike Week it might have a free spot or two still open.

https://freecampsites.net/#!409&query=sitedetails

(my kind of place to stay in other words ......)

READ THE REVIEWS at the bottom of the page for lots of good tips and general information.

If we can get some people commitments we can plan tents, headcounts and GET PRIOR RESERVATIONS for bike week if at all possible.    We want to stay at Gate 3 (equestrian area next to bathhouse/showers).

Be aware that you will day ride 2 hours up the coast to get to Daytona Beach, which puts you out of the range of the endless Bike Week Hurley Burley and makes you drive right on past Cape Canaveral and Dizzy world and the rest of the major theme parks.

(.... and yes, I have never been to Harry Potter World or Avatar Pandora Land and I am a little bit curious as to what state of the art Disney is able to do now with these relatively challenging places.)

DuPuis is about 35-40 miles from me, I have been there several times, bike riding and photography. The Family tent camping are spots with a fire ring and hopefully the grass tamped down. I'll check out the equestrian area next time I'm near there. NO WATER take EVERYTHING you think you will need, including BUG SPRAY! Nearest store or restaurants are in Indiantown, 10 miles away. Take a tent with a closed bottom, they have plenty of --
''Things that crawl, things that fly, and things that creep around on the ground, and they say the ghost of Lousis Clay gets up and walks around!''
As Charlie Daniels would say.

Heck fire, they are supposed to have built brand new stuff just this past year at Gate 3 Equestrian Area -- so I guess a "reality check" is needed here.

$90.oo for the entire 10 days ?  I could do that !  even if we don't stay the entire 10 days .
I could bring a camp stove (one eye) and associated gear.

??????

I don't think we should wait very long to lock it in ...

I went in 2014 and spent a whole day at the big Harley shop and the surrounding venders.   Spent the next day at the Racetrack .

Stayed at the Abate campground at the Fairgrounds just south of Daytona.

If there had been a group of Savages to ride with then I would have stayed longer ... The road quality in Floeida is not like NC. so I came back home .
I enjoyed the day at the Harley shop and the (was it JB Cycles) surrounding area the best.    The visiting at the campground in the evenings was good too  .   8-)

http://bikeweekcampground.com/

Only a short 18 miles from Daytona !  :)

If , there is very much intrest I could ask for two adjoining camp-sites .   My tent is a 8x10 ... sleeps two nicely ... w/cots/gear under cot. ::)
claimed to be a 6-man tent , so there is floor space left over.

Choices, choices.

Spend $90 per tent site ($180 for two tents) ($270 for 3 tents) for 10 days of being locked up inside the very heart of the Hurley Burly .....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h_CJXDMflg

.....  or else paying zero dollars for staying here (away in the peace and quiet of Wolf-land) and having enough money in your pocket to go eat out repeatedly (several times a day no less) .....

....... and who knows mebbe even go to Universal & Dizzy land and see Pandora and 'Arry Potter with your spare change ......

Choices, choices ......    too too many choices, choices.

Begin to sound like totally different trips, don't they?

:)

I'm with you Buddy !

Figure it out and we'll either run down the parkway and stay at the bottom of it ... or ... run down through Ga. and hunt a place to stay when we get tired of ridding for the day.
I can be gone for a week or two , for two or three times durning the year without being in too much truble when I get back home.    ::)
Makes me think of those two fellers we met at Dragon Central a few years back ... they were both (late 50'ish-early 60's) ridding Harley's .   They joined us at the fire pit one evening .  Just Motorcycle Touring and enjoying the ride !  ;)

I've got 5 or 6 of those military style cots , your welcome to borrow one of em.  They fold up like a bag chair and are good  as a camp-chair too.

Air bed for me, thanks.

The free campground area next to the bathrooms/showers (Equestrian area #3) is good for having as many smaller tents pitched as we need, we just need to use the internet to register each tent and get the gate access code sent back to us individually  (it is how you register, you print off the registration form and give it to the host upon arrival).    We can stay the entire 10 day week, laying out our arrival and departure when we register on line.

Plus, if we have a rain out reschedule we got $0 tied up in rained out camping spaces.    This lowers the $$ entry barrier for some better participation.

Next, this isn't the only public water department "free equestrian campground" sitting behind a locked security gate in Florida, merely the best equipped, cleanest and most modern one I could find.

All previous generations of Equestrian camps had outside cold showers, for example.   This is the first one of the new generation, that has the US Forest Service style modern bathrooms and hot showers.

And there are a few freebies that were commercial places but are now free places, for example one which still is an air boat rental place that tried to branch out into camping, had a rough go of it then decided to become "free to stay" to help out the airboat rental business.   It is old though, the facilities date back to the 70's and show the age to them.

Anything located near Daytona Beach has become aggressively commercial, not free at all any more as twice a year the place sprouts overflowing Hurleys which will pay outrageous amounts of money for a place to park an RV or pitch a tent.

Generally speaking, free starts again south of Orlando and ends again north of Miami.

Once again, we found us a nice, modern, hot showers and bathrooms built fresh this year equestrian camp behind a locked combo gate (secure and safe) that has a live in attendant to make sure the riff raff stay away.   Staying there is free and we should use the heck out of it before the Hurley Burly Crew find out about it ....

My Senior Pass came today --- it is the old style forever pass for seniors, good for "free pass" or "half price" depending on where you go and what you are doing.

And let me tell you, when it costs as much to get into Yellowstone as to go to DizzyWorld, that half price Senior Pass comes in handy.

Kudos to Versy for reminding everyone to go on-line and get one while it was still $20 for the lifetime Forever (instead of $80 per year), it only took the US Geological Survey folks half a year to fulfill it, but that's ok -- it is too cold to go anywhere right now anyway.

I am fixed up .....    ;D

I'm not even sure I'd want to pay to get into YellowStone , I might be happy with just ridding around the area .    I'm thinking you have to Pay to use the road to Pikes-Peak now too ?

...............................................

Dave , some of those "Do Over" years ain't that nothing happened --- its just some of the stuff that did happen !  ::)

I don't see any need to waste any more years on not going and doing .  ;)

So , I don't need much notice on most trips we might want to goto .   The weather 5 day forcast will work for me almost every time.    I'd like to run over to Suches for a 3 day outting some time when the weather predicition is "NICE"  and if the cold or rain wants to come visit the 5th day ... so what , we'll be back home by then anyway.

Kind of like OldRider running up to the Dragon one day , Playing a day , Going home the next type stuff.   He set a Good example !    :)

The Suches trip is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in June (weather permitting).  I could arrive in the area in the afternoon of May 30, and stay until June 3rd.  If the weather isn't good that weekend......postpone the event until the following weekend.  (June 6-10).

For May I would like to suggest a potential trip to the Daniel Boone National Forest.  This may be a bit farther away for some members - it is just about half way for MMRanch and I.....somewhere around a 3 hour ride for us.  The area is really scenic and has lots of areas to ride and explore.  Cabins are most likely a bit expensive if we stay at the lodge at Cumberland Falls - there are sure to be less expensive hotels in the area, I am not sure if the area will be warm enough in May for camping - there are times it can drop down into the 40's in May.

I won't be going on the Texas or South Dakota mega-trips, as I don't believe I can get away for an extended period this summer - however I do plan on going for a weekend ride somewhere every month this summer.  I am going to start a "short trip" thread and make it a sticky.  (This way the weekend trip discussion can be kept separate from the "mega trip" discussion/planning.)

OK, I went out to the Equestrian campground at Dupuis yesterday afternoon. ( pronounced Doo-pe-us)It does look nice for what you guys are looking for. (weather permitting) Bike week is March 09 - 18, 18'. So the campground will be closed Tues,Wed, and Thurs before,( see 2nd picture). But you are good from Friday on till the next Fri.
Talked to some campers and the host, and all said it was just what you are looking for. Go online and get your free pass and bring a printed copy with you. The pass is good for 2 vehicles and 1 tent, but their free so just get one apiece, they are good at all WMD campgrounds in Fl for 18'. 8 days in a row, 30 days total for the year.
Bring your own drinking water! There is water there, but you won't want to drink it.
NO FIREARMS, even concealed permit holders unless you are legally hunting.
Someone said it was 2 hours from Daytona,,,,,, NO! Plan on 3 hours, at least 2.5 mostly I95.

Looks like we need four days at  Daniel Boone National Forest.

and

We can have the Camp Ground in Florida for seven days .

Seems like two nice rides !

Gosh !    Together , is more fun !    I'd never had known about either of these two great sounding rides if it were not for  :

Lancer selling me a frame for my first Savage , then telling me about this web-site .   :)    Yea , My first Savage had title problems do to the last owner being military and not available so I had to change frame's to be legal , thought it was bad at the time but look what it turned into .  ;)  I guess whoever is running things upstairs knows what is best after all !  8-)

.................................................................................

So ,

I'm thinking Bike Week is the first "Ride of the Year" .
Let me say now :
My bunk-house could  be a staging place or somewhere to leave your truck/trailer .   I won't promise ya breakfast , but I'll lead ya to Woodard's market where a good breakfast is easy and don't cost much either ! (4miles) ;D

Last time I rode to Daytona , it was an all day thing (? 700 ish miles) .  By time I got there I was wondering why I didn't stop at the 500 mile-ish area , and finish up the next day.  ::)

Maybe we should neet somewhere just north of Florida ?   What do you fellers think ?   I can go the 700 miles in one day if need be ... its them last 200 that makes me wiggle around in the seat a little .  ;D

Use the tool to see what I am talking about    https://freecampsites.net/

Post Atlanta, rolling south on Interstate 75 you see Forsyth and the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge on the right.   On first look the place is lousy with "free camping" but requires a hunting/fishing license to be on the property at all and that license doesn't come cheap for out of state people.  These are all hunt camps and have signage out for both BEARS and WILD BOARS and HUNTER ACTIVITY.   Tent camping is not allowed at some locations due to bad tent ripping bears known to be in area.

Checking into this Church / Boy Scout facility -- https://freecampsites.net/#!39250&query=sitedetails  which looked really good until I read it doesn't even open until one month later in the year (too cold for camping).

In looking at possible layover places in Georgia, please be aware some of them do not even open up until sometimes in April and the March bike week dates are simply too cold and too early for Georgia camping.

Too cold really means unless you are down inside LOWER FLORIDA proper.    Like Jacksonville or lower.

Let's see what you come up with for a proposed meet up spot.

https://freecampsites.net/#!96&query=sitedetails

This one is a year round Forest Service Campground, so it honors our Senior passes (price is $4 for tenting) and it has known good facilities and it gets good reviews.

Cobb Dispersed Primitive is right next to it (should you get a full up condition and have to go dispersed).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngxzXTWOlpk

Jacksonville Florida is low enough to be warmer and it is 7.5 hours away from your house.

75o high and 55o low so it is warm enough to camp at Jacksonville.

MIke, this was just intended as a one night stayover on the day coming in (low enough to be just barely warm enough to camp).

I was just looking at the Florida map :

The Ocean Pond  campground is plenty nice ,,, but  Its a long way from Daytona 138 miles .   Thats Ok , I guess .    We could make a day ride up to Daytona for a day , then return to Ocean Pond  ... or not  ???

Remember this :  http://bikeweekcampground.com/
I could pay the $90 for all 10 days   , for one tent spot  ...  How many of us are/is there camping   ....
I've had 3 in that 6 man tent with a little room to spair.

I suggest :  Ocean Pond night one headed South
Fast lanehttp://bikeweekcampground.com/  by the night (one or two nights)
DuPuis Managment area , Ride around South Fl. a day or two
Ocean Pond (return North) one night  (330 ish miles)

From DuPuis , Daytona is right at 200 .miles

Or    Just get the all 10 days at : http://bikeweekcampground.com/   but a tent up and day-ride out of there for a week ?
:-?

Who all want to go ???

Post by badwolf on 01/09/18 at 21:12:32

MMRanch,
Those pictures I posted were of the Gate 3 campground, not the ''primitive'' Gate1 campground.
Gate 1 ''Family campground'' is just some mowed grass, a picnic table, one concrete outhouse, and a fire ring! Down a dirt(sand) road.
I guess you could go over to the other one to shower, and get under a shelter. But you would be MUCH better off just staying at Gate 3 to start with. They don't have reserved spots for tents, so you will always be able to find a spot to pitch a tent. And the bathroom is way better. You will be able to walk to the bathroom and shower, and there are places to get out of the weather, if need be.
Suit yourself, but I was there Sunday and if you were leading to Gate 1, I would mutiny and go to Gate 3.

Mike, you need to call them back ASAP and tell them one of your group has urological issues and you need to stay in Equestrian Area Gate 3 and get them to change the reservation.

If you do reservations on-line, you just sign up for what you want (you don't have to talk to some clerk who believes in lots & lots of rules).

If they will not change it, post that ASAP and I will give it a shot.

I need to be next to the Equestrian Area #3 bathroom.

Guys, you really are rolling craps anywhere in Florida if you wait until Bike Week to do something.   I really wasn't joking about people pitching tents on the road shoulders and drainage fields.

If you are thinking about going on this trip --- answer the ROLL CALL

I've called and left a message and call-back # .   OldFeller if you want to go ahead and get a rev. at gate 3 , and if I get a call back I'll see if I can get changed to gate 3 also.  If need be we could keep both.   Either way , we're not on the side of the road .
Why do ya not want to stay at the $90.oo for the 10 days place ?   I'm buying , and its only 10 miles from Daytona .   Also we can "Day-Ride" out of anywhere .  :-?

If we ended one of our day-rides in the south Fl. area , we have a camping place on tap already !  :)    (for two people/two vechiles) but we still need another camp somewhere.

I have already gone on-line and made a reservation for camping at the Dupis Equestrian Campground (Gate #3).

We got 4 people and 2 vehicles, which is the maximum the on-line system will allow.

Why not stay up at the Hurley Burley mess in Daytona?   Because the Dragon Zoo flat sets my teeth on edge (more so the older I get) and Daytona Bike Week is far far far worse.   I can stand it for maybe a day, perhaps, but I can't see you or me blowing lots of money to park our butts down in the middle of it.

I wanted to go ride where it was warm and see some Florida, the Keys, Miami, stuff like that.   My interest in the Daytona Hurley Burly Bike Week is a net negative thing.

Mike, if you want the Hurley Burly specifically and want to go stay right in the middle of it and spend a week rolling around in it, just say so.   I don't have to do it, but you can.

If we can get the other folks who have rung in so very sporadically to actually say if they are really coming or not then you could ask them to see what they wanted to do.

Me, I will meet you at a place that is agreeable on ride in day, which could be anywhere that you can spot that is a place we both can find at a fixed time on a fixed date.

I just printed out our permit, our special code to get in the gate and all the rules, so my reservation is complete at this time.

OldFeller ,

I think we should meet in N.Florida at that Pond place , and stick together to go see Florida !

You got a campsite at the gate 3 when we get to south Florida , and if more folks are joining us we have a camp at gate 1 (lost at gate 3)  ;)

If we stop off at Daytona on the way down that's only $15.oo and if not that's OK too !  :)

Bad Wolf says:

Oldfeller,

I will love to ride with you guys around South and Central Fla., but I won't be camping with you at Dupuis, I live just 34 miles from there and prefer my own bed to sleeping on the ground.

I can show you some sights around here, have you ever been to a polo match? I'll check the schedule. Two things to see are right down the road from the campground, a cemetery with a mass grave from a storm, and Port Mayaca bridge, unreal view!

Bring some 22's and shooting glasses as we are not too far from my gun club, you can't camp with a gun but you can have ammo, and I've got a some fun T/C barrels for our steel range.
There some places with ''local flavor'' you might like to see.(biker hang-outs) The roads are mostly in good shape, compared to frost damage up north, but no Dragons down here.

No one can have a firearm unless you are legally hunting. A normal license and you must go thru a draw or lottery. Just bring some 22's I will supply you with something to use them in. And something that makes a lot more noise. We have the best steel range in Fla.

So OldFeller , your bring the Barcalounger with all that fuel avaible ?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018

On a civilized trip down I-95 with tons of gas stations I don't need the extra fuel capacity, so I may take out the jugs and just use the bags as bags.

I dunno, got to pull the jugs anyway for inspection time, so might be slack about putting them back in.

OldFeller ,

That Barcalounge holds a lot of fuel anyway don't it ?

...........................................................

If the rear tire on the guzzi looks like it might have 3000 more miles on it by March then I'll bring it .   Its got 3,200 ish now and is half gone already (Sport Demon) , I won't ever buy one of them !   I'm thinking Avon Road Ridder , I've run them on the front before and they dry rot before they wear out.   On the rear I don't think that will be a problem !  ;D

The Sportster would be a good ridding comrade for your Barcalounge .   I've put the stock suspension back on it , and Florida is flat enough that dragging in the twisty should not be an issue .  ;)   Its got a 4.5 gal tank w/50-55mpg.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 01/11/18 at 18:41:22

I gots me a problem.

For the last longest I have been watching Ebone for an inexpensive junker cast iron reloading press.   Yeah, I know, they wind up getting bid up to  $70-$80 raw and around $100 shipped, no matter how badly rusted, etc.

I've got me a HUGE  .50 caliber capable LEE cast iron press but it is too large and awkward for any smallish depriming job.   I have an old Lee turret that I have been using for light jobs, but I dislike putting "bulk brass" preparation work loads on it as I am gonna wear the aluminum main body and the toggle system out if I keep on using it for that.

Back to the endless hunt for a "decent enough" press, ya gotta watch out if they actually work on the downstroke instead of upstroke and what sort of shell holders they use and if they have the priming arms (if obsolete these are quite expensive when you find one) etc.

So, this puppy cycled down Ebone like 2-3 times, occasionally perhaps being bought and returned for something or another.  It had no lever and it had no priming arm and I suspected since the guy would never post a pic of the ram in the up position that it was rusted from storage.

He finally dropped the "Buy it now" price to$ 69 and bought a primer arm for it and it cycled through again with no takers.

So, I made him a low ball offer, and he took it.   $40 and he pays the shipping.   This actually worked out to $22 for the press and $18 which is about standard for shipping for a cast iron press.

So, here she is physically at my house and I've got me an issue now on the brighter side of things ......   she's jest too purty to be used as a junker press for depriming and resizing tons & tons of that ugly nasty old mil-surp brass.

Had some caked dried lube and dust on her, but no rust underneath the dust and lube residue.   The heat treat black isn't even worn through on the ram, so I kinda doubt the press got used for very much by the original owner.  And I did verify that that set screw retains a standard X class shell holder (the modern shell holder standard).

THERE IS A TRAP WHEN DEALING WITH OLD ANTIQUE PRESS TOOLS, they tend to stop being tools and become "collectables".   Some old reloaders fall for this and start collecting variants of their favorite old style presses.

Take a good look at this "really too purty" one -- from now on it is going to get all dirty and abused.

:)

I've got RBC's version of that LAYMEN of your.   dad bought it when I was 19 years old and its the only one I've ever used.   I used to get them little primers out one at a time and put them in the little holder thing ... Then I discovered a Lee Auto Prime ... I've never looked back.

still use the single stage press and I guess it will last longer than I will !  ;)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 01/11/18 at 21:42:22

I always use the hand autoprime myself, but since the boy took the trouble to go buy a primer arm and then sold me the press for less than twice as much as the new primer arm cost him I figured I'd do him right and include it in the picture.

I bought a package of 4 balls and I am going to make up several lengths of handles, one will be 14" long for heavy work, the next will be 10" long for moderate work and if the 10" isn't handy enough I'll make up a shorter one.

Handles will be T6 aircraft hardened 1/2" aluminum rod which is a lot stronger than I am, the balls will be round black plastic at an inch and a half in diameter.

My handles will never ever get rusty and look ugly.   I may sand them to a consistent pretty fine finish like I did those risers on the Barcalounger but I may feel that is gilding the lilly as the heat treat finish on the aluminum is consistent and pleasant to look at.

Ed, is there anything worth going to to see at Bike Week?    I know it is all old hat to you, but that means you likely know what the most worthwhile parts actually are.

I also find it interesting that all four of us are gun nuts ..... and 3 of us reload (Bad Wolf hasn't fessed up to that addiction yet).

Where in your state is worth visiting?   I know Kel Tec CNC is in Coca, Florida but what other neat things are worth visiting (other than Bad Wolf's steel range).

Speaking of snakes that do not belong in Florida, but are there now and multiplying like crazy due to people losing track of their little pets --- here is the Florida Compendium of Exoitic Snakes that can be found while camping.

https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/herpetology/fl-snakes/visual-id/

This is my favorite, came over in ornamental flower pots shipped from God knows where in South Asia (or inside the asian women carrying the flower pots as the case may be) has over 20 different names in as many exotic locals, likes to find a warm body orifice to crawl into as it really likes living in moist warm spaces where it only partially extends while you are sleeping, extending itself fully as an adult only when mating or laying eggs.   (the more parasitical variants of this class of snakes are found to be completely asexual, reproducing as hermaphrodites while giving birth to live infants en situ).

https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/herpetology/fl-snakes/list/indotyphlops-braminus/

http://https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/files/8313/9767/8065/ramphotyphlops_braminus05.jpg

http://https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/files/2313/9767/8064/ramphotyphlops_braminus03.jpg

The adult is the size of a small fishing worm and the fresh hatched infant and the young adolescent stages are flat out TINY and can be found in various body locations as noted in the latin names below.   This snake has a burrowing pointed tail and can back itself into tear ducts, eustachian tubes and other unlikely places where it grows to maturity feeding off of body secretions.

(this is less than half of the total list of names, it appears each time a doctor runs across it in his medical practice he winds up giving it a brand new latin "discovery name" based on where he found it)

Ophthalmidium tenue – HALLOWELL 1861
Typhlops (Typhlops) inconspicuus – JAN 1863
Typhlops (Typhlops) euproctus – BOETTGER 1882
Typhlops limbrickii – ANNANDALE 1906
Glauconia braueri – STERNFELD 1910
Typhlops pseudosaurus – DRYDEN & TAYLOR 1969
Typhlina braminus – MCDOWELL 1974
Ramphotyphlops braminus – NUSSBAUM 1980

https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/herpetology/fl-snakes/list/indotyphlops-braminus/

..... rest well, MM     [smiley=evil.gif]     sleeping in them riding googles and ear plugs will certainly help slow them baby snakes down some, but then they'll just make a quick run down at your shorts .....

A few years ago I spent some time on the landscaping in my father inlaw's yard in Sarasota.  As he got older he couldn't get all his yard work done - so one visit at Christmas I was determined to get his yard work all caught up.

I found out you can't be a gardener in FL and be afraid of snakes....I found 6 snakes while working in his yard.  One was buried in the sand and was the  Blind snake that Oldfeller posted, another one was a Ring neck snake that was black with a yellow stripe around the neck.  Two of the snakes were really strange as their body didn't taper and they fought like crazy when I first picked them up....then they went stiff and remained motionless - turns out they were not really snakes at all and were "legless lizards".  One other snakes was a common Garter snake - nothing to get worried about.  The last one really gave me a thrill when I picked up a concrete block and a red/yellow/black snake fell out of it........I didn't know if it was a Coral snake - or a King snake.  I tried to figure out the old rhyme - however I just decided that snake didn't need to be picked up and let wander out of the yard on it's own!

Rest easy,  Mike .....

The main campground we are going to has a gaggle of peacocks in residence, they gobble up any wigglies they find about -- worm, snake, centipede, makes no difference to them flashy feathered chickens.   It all tastes like a snack to them.

Problem is your toes and fingers wiggle and tend to look edible to them too .....

===================================================

All done fixing up the new Lyman press.   Got my 8" arm and my 14" arm all made up and installed/ready.

Thought here is the 8" arm is all handy & quick, and whenever I get a stuck case when doing rough sizing work or whatever I pull out the long handle and then request the stuck case become "unstuck" ASAP using jest the proper amount of extra persuasional leverage.

Now I have to clean up the little lathe and put the normal "turning/cutting" gears back in the gearbox and proceed to the next stage of the endless project list.

90%+ of what you do would be "choked short" --- that is why the short arm is the primary arm and it is designed for COMFORT as the same hand is correctly placed to slide in a new case into the shell holder or to remove one as is needed.   Your hand motion is only 2" to get to the case once you finish your up down motion.

Also, ergo sez you don't twist your wrist sideways to do a force generating move as that can lead to hand joint / shoulder damage.  Your most comfortable forceful moves are palm down simple grip and pull moves, not sideways wrist twisted awkward grip moves.

Plus the distance of the throw arc is equal or slightly greater than the length of the arm.   The shorter arm saves time for any operations it is strong enough to do and it is a far more natural motion than using the long arm.

Lastly, an old style Lyman press runs off a Luger style toggle action to get its leverage/mechanical force advantage.   It generates maximum mechanical advantage (compression) at the toggle over point, and it generates maximum ram speed as it approaches a 90o handle angle.

There are lots of reasons why the short handle is the primary handle, and I am pretty sure the only time the big handle ever comes out is on a stuck (improperly lubed) case.

Post by MMRanch on 01/17/18 at 11:01:01

The swing on mine old RBC (RBS?) press has what must be 120 deg. swing and the ball on the end of the arm is the most comfortable  grab place.
Which reminds me I've got about 100 Swish 5.55 cases that need bullets and about 50 of them need powder too.   I found some 30 cal. jacked bullets to put in them.   OldFeller were those you left here 150 grs. ?    If so , this must be them .   We're only going about 2400fps with them , that's fast enough for 200yd flat shooting and mild expansion.

I had one of these on the Front of that first Savage and ran it for near 30,000 miles and it still had about 1/3 of its tread when I sold it .   That tire made many , many Dragon runs and always felt good and solid.   So , I'm going to try one on the Rear of the Guzzi .   If it will stay looking good for 15,000 miles then I'll get another like it for the next time.    I really don't like changing tires !   :)

MM, what ground rules are we gonna have concerning RAIN or other bad weather?

A week long trip might have a short rain event take place, logically speaking.   We will both have rain suits with us and with Miami and it's up the coast co-cities very nearby for distractions so we could kill a day in town with no big issues.

But what would constitute "weather too nasty"?

MM,

I can tolerate Daytona for about a day,  but you should pick the day that contains the stuff you really want to see as spending a day at a Hurley Dealership milling around with a crowd of hurley people isn't any sort of fun to me.

Yes, I share your dislike of cold and wet, but understand it can happen periodically in the springtime.   So far we are staying close to a city in both places, so we can run go find a hotel or kill a day gun shopping if need be.

Do you remember why your original trip to Daytona Bike Week got cut short?

Just curious ....

Here is the "way out in time" weather report on March, we know it doesn't pick up any reality much at all until 2 weeks out so I'm not too bent over it at the moment.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/indiantown-fl/34956/month/15185_pc?monyr=3/01/2018

You will notice that DuPuis has 80o days and 60o nights while Jacksonville and Orlando area is 10o colder just by being that much further north.

Also remember, we are 2 hrs away and can go back for any special Bike Week event you really want to see.

OldFeller ,

You must have a magic touch or something !   :)        That idea of Staying in DuPuis  is a really good thing according to the Long Range forecast.

I'm sure there will be a good day or two for exploring North Florida during our stay.
And
With any luck , we'll have a local "Tour Guide" or two to show us around .    Finding those neat little places that get missed by folks who don't live in the area.

You know one day we'll need to go as far South as possible , another day go over to the gulf.   I don't care to much for those Tourist Trap Attractions and such .

That 2014 trip to Daytona was out of curiosity mostly .   I stayed at the ABATE camp ground for three nights .
The first day was spent at the JB Cycles/Harley Davidson compound.   It was full of venders from Trucks through Insurance companies.   It was a circus for sure !
The second day I went over to the Speedway all day.   It was a SEA of Cycles and Friendly Folks a Ridding them.
Every night at the campground there was a fire going in the pit .   Most of the other campers drank Beer instead of Water or Mt.Dew but I couldn't really hold that against em.
But you know what ?
It just wasn't any Fun not having one of my Friend there .

Has Ed L said anything further about the "neat little places" he was talking about?    BadWolf wants us to bring .22 long rifle ammo to go steel shooting with him and I will bring a hundred or so rounds just so I can see how bad my eyesight has gotten.    :P

I also just ordered a better grade of Quorelle HPE plastic jugs for my auxillary gas system -- this new stuff won't permit "gas stink" to migrate nearly as much as the previous jugs did.

Live and learn ......

Sometimes it might be nice to have a "Bladder" to lay in the bottom of each saddle bag.   Even if it was only 1/2 gal in each bag.
What kind of jugs did you find ? :-?

Ive had the thought of getting one of those "Tanks" that fit on the luggage rack.   Then putting it inside of the tail-trunk to hide it.   Giving up the Tail-Trunk space is the problem !   ;D

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018
Post by Oldfeller on 01/24/18 at 07:20:19

I checked into flexible bladders, they are VERY EXPENSIVE and only one out there would fit into a bag and it would likely leak smell like my original jugs did -- at $300x2 just to try it, no sale to this poor old boy.

You have seen the jugs I use, 2.6 gallons that use up about 65% of my bag space.   My current theory if I can get the stink issue under control I can live with what I've got for an aux fuel system.

Do you have a fuel pump in your Guzzi?

If not then you are limited to the up high little aluminum beer kegs .....

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018
Post by MMRanch on 01/24/18 at 07:42:52

;D

Do you have a fuel pump in your Guzzi?

The Guzzi comes stock with 5.5 gals.

The S-40 still only has 3.5 to the bottom of the filler neck inside the tank.
It's the one I haul extra fuel in/on .    The S-40 is still the all-day cruser I like to ride !  :)
I don't like ridding over 70-75 mph anyway.
Thinking of the ability to go , makes me think of the ability to Stop .     That better caliper I got from Dave is a wonderful thing .    I bought a pair of them off a SV-650 to donate to the cause when I get the chance...

So , did ya find something better to haul gas in than a bunch of red painted Sea-foam cans ?

I also just ordered a better grade of Quorel HPE plastic jugs for my auxillary gas system -- this new stuff hopefully won't permit "gas stink" to migrate nearly as much as the previous jugs did.

They are still the same plastic 2.6 gallon jugs, just made from the stiff bone white plastic they ship paint thinner in.

You can take a sniff and a look in a month or two, then we will both know if they are really worth using.

Right now, it is a $35 theoretical trial sort of thing.

::)

If you want to rubber neck some tanks that could go up on a Savage sissy bar mount, look here.

https://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=104163&catid=578
http://https://www.usplastic.com/catalog/images/products/Tanks/400/13880p.jpg

P.S.    The Barcalounger jest got its oil and its front brake fluid changed, and the bike fired right up and idled fine as soon as both cylinders got properly fueled up.

(Suzuki ran the fuel supply for the front carb through the back carb, so before the front carb fires off the rear carb has to be completely fueled up and the lines between the two completely filled, and only then does the front fuel bowl really begin to fill.   Odd, huh.   There can be as much as a minute before both cylinders are really firing properly by design.)

Previous Dr. Owner told me the bike had never once run correctly after a winter's storage and the stealership firmly instructed him to bring it back in for "carb cleaning" if it did that odd "stall and run" action the first thing in the springtime.    After 10 years he would just call them to come and get it every spring and then paid them an average of $325 in shop labor hours to "take the carbs apart, rebalance them and fix it all up".

::)     ...... this likely meant either charge the battery or replace it and run some seafoam through the tank.

==================================================

It was 50 degrees today, so I worked on my bikes some and got them to the stage they could be inspected.   So I put a paperback in my pocket and ran them out to the Cycle Shop in by turns.

I don't go to Stealerships any more for inspections since I discovered this little hole in the wall Cycle Shop does bike inspections with no waiting.

::)

Well, both bikes made it through inspection OK and I have given each bike a one tank dose of seafoam on the theory that a couple of bucks worth of Seafoam certainly can't hurt anything, and historically list-wide Seafoam does a good job of partially stopping "stored alky gas" issues from fouling things up.

So, I Stabil'd the gas in the fall and Seafoamed the first few tanks in the very early spring so I guess that even Bill would bless my new set of semi-superstitious yearly maintenance rituals.

The Barcalounger got a "pretty bike" complement from the bike inspection guys, who wanted to know FYI what sort of aftermarket can system I was using in the bags.   I told them it was a matched set of small outboard gas cans which satisfied their curiosity well enough, I guess.

So, as soon as my new hard white scent free Quorel HPE 2.6 gallon jugs get here I will put the "5.2 gallons in the saddle bags" auxiliary fuel system back together.

====================================================

On Sunday (very next day) I got a fail to crank on the Barcalounger so I pulled the battery and found it was an old style liquid acid battery that was running mostly dry on two cells.

I had already bought a new style AGM glass mat battery from Walmart.com on-line CHEAP like a month ago figuring I was gonna need one this year.  So I went to put it in and I got me a surprise, the new battery is like an inch and a half shorter than the original battery.   All the upper bulky slosh acid baffles are gone from the new AGM battery of course, and that simply makes the battery that much shorter.   Modern AGM batteries are simply better batteries (and that made it yet shorter still as less plate area is needed).

The battery box on the VS800 is odd for another reason, it opens from the bottom like a trap door, you stick the battery up in the blind hole, push it up into place and lock the trap door with a couple of bolts and the tight fit of the battery in the box gives you all rattle control and aligns the terminals to match up to the rather small clearance access windows that are cut on the up high blind ends of the box.

Next stupidity, the stock battery required two 90o battery lug ADAPTORS to move the connections to a sideways connection pattern which also made it a bloody pain in the arse to get the battery to come out of the steel battery box itself without arcing on steel.

I decided I could do better for myself than paying $136 for a FACTORY STOCK liquid acid Yuasa battery (yep, they still sell them as the stock battery is the only thing that would go into the odd arrangement and actually still mate up to the little box windows using the battery lug adaptors).

Issue on the 15 year old bike is that the little access windows in the steel battery box (so you can get to the terminal bolts on the lug adaptors) no longer get even close to matching up to the new style shorter AGM battery's terminals, so I spent Sunday all day pulling side covers and wiring connections and setting me up some "Generic Battery Connections" that come in from the top of the battery box.

So now I can stage literally any applicable AGM battery of any terminal orientation on my old rectangular Savage box lift* and after jacking the Barcalounger up high on my hydraulic motorcycle jack.  I can sit comfortably in a chair, drop the trap door, catch the old battery on the box lift, remove the two battery connections that come down from above (lots of room in there now for some coiled up extra cable length as the batteries are so much shorter than they used to be).

I can now go buy any applicable 12 volt AGM motorcycle battery that is currently selling for a reduced price as long as it is about 3 1/2" x 6 1/4" on the bottom rectangle form.    Likely any lithium motorcycle battery would work fine too.

Bike starts instantly now, so I am good to go for Florida.

* (very ancient Savage tech, that 15 year old simple box lift, only the real Savage old timers remember the original board box lift that would lift either front tire or back tire (you pick which one this time) just by tilting the bike up a tad on the side stand and then siding the wooden box into the correct place by tapping it in the correct place with your foot.

(all mods except BIG piston and carb change have been done, but do not show)

Come now Kelly, take the plunge and get the other "2 out of 3" primary mod's done, the BIG piston and VM carb.
Heck, you could even get one of the 94mm Wiseco's and make it really easy on your self.
You know you will like it.

Lancer, my old friend and buddy

I am one of the ones that first hand understands the "decreasing effectiveness" of the major modifications that can be done to the Savage.

I am also understanding that if I wanted a 60+hp single cylinder bike, KTM makes one called a KTM 690 Enduro (it is just a bit too tall in the crotch for me and has some 66 fuel injected ponies to it) but if front suspension adjustment and some rear shock modifications done to it would be a lot cheaper than a major Savage rework.   They are available used now and are climbing down from the stratosphere in price accordingly.

Still too high, though, on both purchase price and crotch height the both of them.

http://https://pictures.topspeed.com/IMG/crop/201312/ktm-690-enduro-r-5_800x0w.jpg

I am currently very satisfied with the 55 hp Barcalounger and am riding it more (and for longer distances) than I ever ran the Savage.   Rip and run in the mountains (within reason) is fine, I can still keep up with the crew on either bike but I find my taste for killing Ducks and Crumpets in the curvies has declined a great deal lately.

Oldfeller, friend of many years, jesting you am I. [ch128513]

I understand the changing desires when riding, that is a "me too thing".
I do like playing with my Savage though on short straight-a-ways with a quick twist of the throttle, but speed and such on curves has diminished a good bit.

Anyway, my comment in the early morning hours was me just being a little froggy.  I was up with a migraine, taking a shot and eating some pain pills and starting to feel a little better.

The texas twisted sister trip is aprilish.  The cabins are never full up, so it can be decided a few weeks before hand.  Which would be good to consult MMR on weather.

I have thoroughly enjoyed both the Texas rides I've been on.   :)

If ya haven't been to ride the Twisted Sisters , then it should be on your bucket list.    One of the most memorable sights for me  was the " Stone-Hinge " , of Texas .
The Cabin and the comradely is a great part of the trip too.    That Super Hamburger in the middle of No-where is a neat place ... so was the place with the Old Yellow Indian and stuffed Cougars  !    Come to think of it , all those places YouzGuyz took us to were Great places to visit !

Heck !  I may need to go back and do it again !!  ;)

Here is the "way out in time" weather report on the March trip to Florida, we know it doesn't pick up any reality much at all until 2 weeks out so I'm not too bent over it at the moment.

Meet up area by Lake City Florida, near Jacksonville.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/lake-city-fl/32055/month/332305?monyr=3/01/2018

Down by DuPuis / Indiantown (main camping place)

Results are still too vague to get excited over, but they are there for the viewing ......

Message for MM

Next, focusing on DAY 1 which starts by meeting up at LAKE CITY FLORIDA off of I-75 here are your choices of eating places to meet up at ......

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Osceola+Shooting+Range/@30.1785963,-82.6862517,673m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x6572f1ad9b1626d3!8m2!3d30.2017011!4d-82.5915402

OK, pull your eyes over to the right to the meet up type eating place choices (and quit looking at that free to the public rifle range that is just down the street from us, along with 4 pretty decent looking gun stores).

You will be tired from the trip and hungry too, so let's meet at a nice place to eat and get that all settled up before going off into the alligator bushes to go camping.

Big question: did you want to meet up on Thursday the 8th or Friday the 9th as we are meeting way up high in Florida (to minimize day one travel time and still get decent camping night time temperatures) and we are still a half a day out from Daytona at that elevation.   We could meet on Thursday and then still hit Daytona at the very start of the Bike Week circus before it gets so crowded it is impossible to travel on the roads.

Its 490 miles to Lake City from Lynchburg .   I'm guessing that 10 hours in the saddle will get me to our meeting spot , plus one hour for the going east.
So , if I meet ya about 1800-1900 hrs. then I need to leave about 0700-0800 hrs.    Most likely 0800 hrs. would be my departure time.
If I meet ya at Cracker Barrel about 1900hrs in Lake City would that be good on your end ?

Is our camp-ground in Lake City the one in the link you posted ?    I haven't committed the details to memory yet !  ::)
But , its about time to make it solid !  ;)

Your ridding the Barcalounge , so if I bring the Harley (if it hasn't sold by then) we'll be ridding V twins to a V twin convention !  ;D

Which day, Thursday the 8th or Friday the 9th?

Yes, we will be going to    https://freecampsites.net/#!96&query=sitedetails   with two nearby overflow camps to fall back upon if it happens to be full.

Next, I called the Cracker Barrel and they do not have wifi at that location.   Across the road is a Ruby Tuesday that does have free wifi so we can look stuff up, locate things, etc. as we sit and eat and talk.   Ruby serves a killing good burger and a really top notch salad bar, so you could think of it as an eating upgrade ..... or I can wait at Ruby's free wifi and when you show up we can go wherever you want.

Have you rigged up up a charging cable for your phone off your bike yet?

Now, to keep from getting lost from each other, go to your android phone and use the phone's Google PlayStore and get the Life360 app and put it on your phone (it's free).

Looks like this symbol    https://www.life360.com/

Open up the app on the phone and join a group (Group code is TDS-QHH).

If you are successful doing this you will see a dot for me and a dot for you.   Call me if you have issues getting this to work (if needed you can start the group and give me the code and I'll join you)

Yep, it is so on join up day I can see how far out you are and judge if I have time to catch a gun store or two before heading to Ruby Tuesday.

Yea buddy !   I can charge 2 at a time if need be !

I had to make room in my phone to get 360 in there , in my old phone it was easy to move stuff to the SD card - I haven't figured it out for the new phone yet.

I would think meeting on Thursday would be good !    If they have a opening day parade that might be fun to watch !  :)

OK, I got you a picture of the only one available at the time.

Riding somebody's race bike around the track leaves me kinda cold, and no bike that I would likely ever really ride would even get the track excited enough to yawn about it.

FM is built into all Qualcomm Chipsets, it is a little bitty separate radio function inside the ARM cpu.

If your unit doesn't unlock it by default, try an android app from the play store.

All phones have radio reception capability (they call it the other half of cell phone service).

No data usage is required.

MM, I went looking for the Barrel of Death and the free Ride New Bikes at the Speedway and I did not find the Barrel of Death anywhere -- but I did find the ride a bike blurb.

Demo Rides

Stop by the “World Center of Racing” at the Speedway and take a spin on the newest rides in the FREE demo ride area. Free demo rides will be available along the Midway from top manufacturers like Indian, Slingshot, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Harley-Davidson! If you would like to ride newest models and exclusive rides, you’ll need to bring a valid motorcycle driver license and DOT-approved helmet.

OK, it is over 65 degrees warm today, so today I go gas the bike up and begin to pack it, taking this activity intentionally very slowly with the intent to not leave a bunch of expensive stuff stored in the tent when we are gone.

If we charge our electronic stuff off of our bikes and carry our electronics with us on our bodies, the most expensive stuff left in camp will be a camp chair, an axe and air bed/sleeping bag (and the tent, of course).

Also, our bikes should not carry a bunch of stuff either, as robbing your saddlebags is all a part of the local charm of Bike Week.   (biker looking guy opens a saddle bag, goes into it, pulls something out all while chatting with his beer toting buddy --- problem is that it ain't you and the other guy ain't yer buddy either (he is a cop spotter/lookout)

Not much room for more than one change of clothes, so we will have to visit a laundromat occasionally during the week (or else rig a clothesline off of some nearby trees and wash some of our stuff in the bathroom sink).

Mike, does one of your bags lock?

Hit the Jacksonville level Thursday March 8th, drop down to Daytona area on Friday March 9th for opening day events and the ride a bike on the speedway dealie-bops.   Likely to hang over one night at Daytona as Mike is gonna whimper kinda hard if he doesn't get to see event XX and event YY which are both scheduled for Saturday.  And lets not forget event ZZ which runs all day Sunday ......

If Mike can get somebody else to stay with him at his Daytona campground, he might stay a day or so later at Daytona and I might just drift on down to Depuis just to get away from all the noisy Hurley Burley mess.   Ed L lives near Daytona, so he might be Mike's salvation on hanging out in Daytona for a bit thing.  Mike needs to get up with Ed and get whatever thoughts they have together all jelled together tight.

BadWolf, I have PM'd you to get your cell phone number and address so we can meet up near where you are whenever the time comes.    Mike can find me anywhere we go as he's got my dot on this Life360 app.   And now so do you -- Ed L likewise.   Remember to get the app on your phone and use the code before the 3 days expire, elsewise ask me for a new code (they are easy enough to do).

Once you are in group you don't have to mess with codes any further and you remain in group until you chose to leave (or you dump the app, that works too).

I think we are gonna like that Life360 app as it makes so many things easy that we flat couldn't do before.

Example:   we never figured out how to join up on the move before, ever.    Now, a joiner person could sit in a burger joint on the interstate, watch the dots approach and be waiting for them on an on ramp and nobody would even have to stop.    Magic.

I haven't seen a list  of events yet ,

Do I need to reserve a camp spot in Daytona area ?
I kind of thought we were going to go from north Florida the 9th , then return to Daytona for a day-ride thing .
I'm not even sure I can still get a camp spot ... but if we might need one I better get it lined up !

If I bring the Guzzi , then they all lock (hard bags) .    I've had thoughts of bring the  Savage.    I took the windshield and trunk off the Harley for selling it.

MM,

I don't see anything I want to go back to Daytona over, really.   KTM is not doing the bike trial thing and I am not into bike shopping right now anyway.

I was offering you a way to break off and go play with Ed L. if that is what you two decided to do, but to be blunt he doesn't seem to be responding for much at the moment.

There are gun shops in Daytona, a bunch of them.    I can kill some time if need be.    Bet those are some more crowded gun shops though ......

I don't think I'll need to bring Tn. ammo to Florida !   ;)   Just buy a brick when we get ready to run to the range !    The Folks in Florida must be Very Well Armed --- to support that many gun shops  " Florida might just be the most polite State in the union" !   8-)

I don't need to be motorcycle shoping either .  Sometimes I think I'd enjoy a Suzuki DR200 as much as any other bike there is.
But
I may just put the trunk ,GPS , and whindshield back on the Harley and run it to BikeWeek ???    The SuperSlab is where it really shines the best anyway.

The Rear tire on the Guzzi has maybe 1500 miles left on it , not quite enough for  a week long ride.  I'd like to get it wore out before trashing it.   Maybe a trip to Suches Ga. ?   ::)

The Savage is ready to go on a 15,000+ miles trip with the tires that are on it.  And it needs nothing but an Oil Change might be a good thing to do , its' still got the 20w50 from last summer and this cold weather has the clutch slipping till the motor warms up.

Nice to have a choice .   :-?

There is not a lot of chance that Suzuki will have a DR200  ready to do a couple laps around the speedway !   ;D ;D ;D

Ed got up with me by PM, he is going out of town with the wife on a promised camping trip so he is "out of town" at this time.

Bad Wolf is communicating conversationally on several threads and wanted to know more firmly when we are coming down to Depuis.

Suzuki America is bringing the bikes to trial ride at Bike Week, not the local dealerships.  Nobody local knows what they are bringing ....

Some of this stuff might be Fun , even without being DRUNK !  ;D

Perhaps , we might have two camp ground , one for the big tent and one for the "Don't want to ride all the way back to S.Fl. " days.   If spots are still available .

OldFeller ,

I'm thinking maybe I should try to get us a Tent Site around Daytona for Friday the 9th and Sat. the 10th.    Then move on to South Fl. for the rest of the week for sight-seeing.

I'll see what I can find and get back with ya before I "Lock in" .

http://bikeweekcampground.com/

I'll spring for the CampGround ,

Last time you paided up front and it rained  so "Let's leave you $$$ out

of it this time "   ;D

----------------------------------------------------------

I should get the same campground for Friday the 16th for our trip north so we can be their for the "Burning Bike" event and get a head-start the next morning back to the other campsite that is only 500 miles from home.  (Where I meet ya on the 8th).

You got the GPS information for the camp (8th Mar.) and ( 17th) .?

Had to compress the picture but the original is on the above web page , just scroll down on it.

Somehow I figured you were gonna wind up wanting to go do various Bike Week events once you started looking at them.

Having stuff scattered about in two different campgrounds unattended half the time means the likelihood stuff will get stolen goes up a lot.    Still, I guess it is a known risk and my small tent and your small tent aren't that expensive to replace.   Mebbe we could arrange to leave stuff at the camp attendant's cubby behind a locked door since he's got one .....

I think I would regret losing the "packs small" fat man's camp chair more as it cost 3x what my small tent did.   But I see what you are up to -- having your cake and eating it too.

We are a month out and Mike has begun casting chicken bones and mirroring one month to the next in his normal farmer's almanac style.

Although modern weather technology lets you down quite frequently in regards to weather predictions, you can look at these and realize that Florida has somewhat different weather down near Miami as compared to Daytona Beach as compared to Jacksonville way up north.

What counts now to us is the general large slow moving cloud masses, so when all three areas say the same thing, it is worth paying some attention to -- especially when 1-2 weeks out when the forecast gets a lot more real.

What is good about this trip is NO MONEY IS TIED UP IN STAYING ANYWHERE at this point in time.   WE ARE FLEXIBLE.

.... and Mike, you should avoid plunking down funds until you know what the weather is going to be.

Meet up area by Lake City Florida, near Jacksonville.    Dates May 8th and May 16-17

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/lake-city-fl/32055/month/332305?monyr=3/01/2018

Not too encouraging at this point.   Thursday and Friday and Monday and Tuesday are RAIN OUT days.

Daytona Beach area (Bike Week area)

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/daytona-beach-fl/32114/month/328173?monyr=3/01/2018

Sunday Monday Tuesday are RAIN OUT days

Down by DuPuis / Indiantown (main camping place)

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/indiantown-fl/34956/month/15185_pc?monyr=3/01/2018

Monday Tuesday are RAIN OUT days

Results are really still too vague to get overly excited over, but they are there for your viewing pleasure ......     We know they shift some two weeks out, and become much more specific for days and amounts of precipitation.  We also know that the general big patterns don't go completely away, and Sun Mon Tues look to be WET at this time.

Having taken the "camp for free" philosophy,  normally we would just consider perhaps shifting weeks or tuning the show up day.   Problem this time is that BIKE WEEK is a fixed time span event, so now we are faced with deciding to go or not to go.

If it is days of solid rain, guess who ain't gonna be there .....     :P

Consider dumping the Bike Week events if the weather is dubious, aim at a different clear week for the first of the year snowbird trip or else mebbe try to hit a span of days that just touch only the good part of Bike Week (if such exists).

"Camp for free" gives you flexibility you don't get normally.

I'm somewhat leery of not getting a campsite if I don't lock in early.   I'm thinking 9th, 10th , and 16th. in Daytona .... 11th,12th,13th,14th,15th in South FL.   With the 8th and 17th in Lake City.

Is only $15.oo a night , so I'll  lock in a camp site for those three night.

Never  two camps at a time .

Have you got a pair of Rain-Boot-Covers yet ?    It really makes a difference if your shoes stay dry.    My old Frog Coat has had it so I'll get a new one , but the pants are still good and I replaced my torn boot covers last year.
We might have to take turns helping each other get them boot covers on .... I can barley reach mine anymore !  ;D ;D ;D

Now, while still being supportive and all, the crowds at the events will be thinned out considerably by the drizzly weather.   Most sane folks will simply take a look at it early and try to cancel their reservations and find out that their money is gone (it is a motorcycle event and they want to make almost as much $$ off you for cancelling as for going).

Now, how much rain and how cold is it going to be (ie can you survive by dressing in $150 worth of insulated rain gear).

Cold is down as low as 73o daytime and 46o at night up at Jacksonville.  Dropping down to the mid state level at Daytona, 77o daytime and 54o at night.   Rain duration is 5.5 hours and the amounts are 0.34 inches so we are talking about a drizzly constantly on off cold misty light rain and then it thunderstorms occasionally and really dumps some wet really fast.

You are talking about riding around in this and CAMPING out in it.   Der Wif has said HELL NO, that she isn't going to be nursing me through a bout of early retirement motorcycle pneumonia for going and doing something stupid like that.  Love that support, honey.

Can this forecast change?   Yes, it can get better, or it can get worse.    The Forecast people get pressured by the BIG Events people to make as optimistic a forecast as they can possibly make as Bike Week is a really big revenue generator for the area and this is their industry -- Tourism.

So they do fudge it to the positive as much as they can.

Last spring we watched forecasts in the touristy NC mountains go get better and better until the day before the event and then they had to post EMERGENCY FLOOD WARNINGS right over the top of their overly optimistic BS stuff.

CAN IT ALL TURN AROUND AND BE BEAUTIMUS?     Yes, but not very likely at this point as we are inside 30 days and they are tracking large building systems "fairly accurately" at this point in time.   Something is coming around the gulf of Mexico aimed at Florida .....

ONE WEEK out then they start projecting out the actual rainfall amounts that they can actually observe coming up over over the gulf coast states as the weather systems roll closer to Florida.   It gets a lot more accurate at that point.    But right now we are holding out for "improvement" as we get tighter inside of two weeks.

:P

Today I am going to get out all my new heavy rain gear I purchased last spring and put it all on (shoe booties too) --- and consider if I would really want to wear that stuff for a week taking it on and off and on and off.

FACT:   I need to take the rain stuff out and put it all on, and then actually practice walking around in it in the cold rain wearing my helmet so I can see exactly how hot and sweaty it all gets (new stuff is supposed to breathe better).   Maybe even take a short ride to see exactly where the water gets in if any of the zippers leak .....  go ahead and melt the first set of holes in the pants legs and rip the first crotch seams so you know what you are really really dealing with for ride week protection.

The "X-Large" was too small
The "XX-Large" was way, way, to big ????   :-?

Post by Oldfeller on 02/08/18 at 19:52:50

Last spring I was the one saying we would still go on the cabin trip, right up until the flood warnings were posted and they started shutting down the low lying roads for flooding.    On that cabin trip the campground cancellation charges were $70 out the window, so this year I vowed we wouldn't lay any money down until we knew what the weather was going to be (and we wouldn't trust weathermen near as much).

And indeed, we didn't --- MM simply chose to plunk down $45 at risk which is a choice he made knowing what he was doing.

Now I am doing some research on how warm you can stay while wearing a rain suit while camping in the rain.   So far I think the net issue is overheating, not with staying warm enough.

New thoughts are that I can put up or take down a one man tent quicker than I can put on or take off a full rain suit with foot covers     ;)     and guess what, it will need to come off and go on often enough in a week to likely wear out or rip the seams on the crotch and arms.    I will bring some duct tape .....

The camp chair will get used a lot because unless MM and I are doing each other's foot covers you simply have to sit down to put your foot covers on.

Next, I am going to carry a big golf umbrella for when we are out walking around Bike Week.  If we get rained on then, big deal.   Go under a pavillion for a bit and eyeball something.  Keep an eyeglass cleaning cloth or two on your person -- my glasses fog up a lot in the rain.

My right bag is totally packed up by a rain suit bag and I am working on slimming down the left bag by leaving off the road rash kit and spare footpegs as I don't think there are any curves to speak of in Florida and EMS is going to be available everywhere we are going to be.   The saddle bags are waterproof and I am looking for lockable straps to add to the bags.

Now I am working on the Gym Bag load of stuff that goes into the tent with me.   Much less toiletries (a zip lock full and that's it) and much fewer clothes (I will wash stuff in the sink every few days).

For tents it was a simple quart bottle of silicone oil spray tire shine (which was very available back then but is kinda rare right now)    You can still find it, but ya gotta LOOK for it.

READ the contents, most tire shine isn't simple heavy silicone oil any more.

Unscrew it and sniff it before you buy it --- avoid stuff that smells bad.

I left the wheels for later once the Barcalounger is back up on the lift as my back ain't up to that much "crouch over real low".

Flu Is Causing 1 in 10 American Deaths and Climbing

Along with the pneumonia it spawns, this year’s epidemic may be killing 4,000 people every week.

The flu vaccine that was given out this fall for free may have not really hit the exact version of flu virus that is running around at the moment.    You are always inoculated for last year's flu bug (that's what they know about after all) but this fall's vaccine was pretty much a miss for the current bug according to the experts.

If you get the flu go in early --- your wife will thank you for doing that for her.    Otherwise, you can be dead inside a week if you do get the bad stuff.

I found a stainless latch system that can secure my bags, which really isn't as easy as it sounds.

It comes from the marine world and is used to pull items closed under a little tension and it is called "the rattle-free latch system" because it is.

It can also work if the two items do not line up exactly evenly in space as it can span the mismatch up/down without getting indigestion.   Once toggled, a standard padlock will run through the hasp and be supported away from the bag.

I only see the padlock coming out when the bike is parked and left for a bit at a place where I don't want people who commonly carry strap cutting sharp knives to be instantly rummaging around in my stuff.

Strap locks really don't slow Bike Week thieves up for very much .....   I want them to have to go get the big bolt cutters out of their car and spend a little time and effort to rob me.    Or else have to saw a goodly chunk of the side of the bag lid off .....

Looks good, polished stainless steel sitting on glossy black bags.   Looks strong as shite too.

No, I think a 60 series tire has very stiff walls and is a very short tire -- too mean for this old man to wrassle with.

I think the 155-80r15 has been a thing we have both done before, somewhat tougher to mount than the 165-80r but doable with care.   Certainly a bit less wide and less tall than what I have on the Savage right now.   This "shorter/skinnier" is needed because shaft drive bike tires are fixed, no adjustments available for fudging for clearance .....

Reminds me to bring your cast lead .308 lubed and sized bullets for the K-31 though.

I went ahead and ordered the Federal 155-80r15 from Walmart, as I have no idea what the rear tire (brand new as of last spring) will look like after running the world this summer.    Since most of it is all 4 lane out West a big ol' flat spot will be what kills it quick most likely.

Also, Wally offered to bribe me with a $25 new card credit for starting up a credit card which will only be used for the one purchase, so the tire will only cost me $27 delivered to my local Wally.

At that sort of price, I'll risk it.    I know I'll have to get out the electric knife and cut the tubeless lips off the beads (turn them car beads into tube style motorcycle tire beads).

When cutting away the large tubeless rubber sealing lips, an electric knife with some olive oil to lube the blade motion, allowing for frequent rest breaks to cool the electric motor down is the best/quickest method found in the past.   You pull up on the cut off lip to create some running clearance for the blade and it cuts the fiber-free sealing rubber lips quite easily.

A tube type motorcycle tire has NO BIG SEALING LIPS (the tube does that job) and the rim recess makes no provisions for holding such large flabby rubber lips anyway.    They totally get in the way and increase the seating air pressure required tremendously.

::)

OFF WITH THEIR LIPS !!!   sez the red queen to Alice .....

Ain't there some way of making a spoke wheel into a tubless wheel and just forget the tube alltogether ?

If so , I believe I'd run tire slim in it also !  :)

Post by Oldfeller on 02/12/18 at 17:36:49

I tried that and found that to seal the spoke nipples required layering rubber in the mounting well which took up critical space needed to offset the beads enough to mount the tire.

It was just easier to use the tube.

I was thinking of the 145/60-15 I've got  .    It might serve on the hay rake one day !  :-?

::)

What if a Savage type person took : JB Marine and put a small "beade" of it around each spoke-head so that gravity ran it into the right place for it to be.   I suppect doing 6 at a time would be all you could do before Gravity quit being such a friend .   Then after making it all the way around , that same Savge person used a shot of " Tire-Sealer " inside ... just to make sure air did'nt hunt-up no extra little pin-holes !

I think I'm about thought my self into trying this next time my Commander II needs replaceing .     On'y thing is that will be near 20,000 miles from now ---- Maybe ----  :-?  halfway through the summer  ;D  ;D ;D   2019

Well......how many folks ever true their wheels after the first 50,000 miles?  By that time I suspect the spokes/nipples are rusted so tightly together you won't ever get them to move anyhow.

I've NEVER turned a spoke on mine .   When I got my second S-40 my good tire was on my old Savage rim ... So I just kept the Savage rim.   So , all my LS-650 miles have been on the same wheel ... not far from 100,000 miles by now , but never turned a spoke on it ... I'm wondering if I might ought to check it ???     ::)

It don't matter , I'm getting over 20k miles from the Commander II tires , and have learned to know what they can and can't do.  Just Staying away from WET ROADS is the main thing , anywhere else they are as good as anything out there.

The back wheel of the Savage should be pretty strong.  It has a very heavy steel rim, and the spokes are thick and very short in length as a result of the 15" rim on a drum hub....and it has a beefy tire with plenty of sidewall to soak up a heavy impact.  After the initial settling in......I would think it would take a pretty heavy hit to bump the wheel out of alignment.

MM.....go ahead and make your rim tubeless if you want and get that 60 series tire mounted.  It won't be hard to get a replacement rear rim if it doesn't work out......between Lancer, Verslagen and I - I betcha we will always have a spare laying around somewhere.

Hey gang!  Sorry I have not been very attentive here lately. Traveling a lot with work, not riding much at all due to busy work schedule and crazy weather.

So...what is the current list of Spring and Fall trips?  I scanned back a few pages and can't seem to locate a good summary.  I want to make sure I get plugged in where my schedule will allow, and reserve those dates so I don't double book a work trip on a riding weekend!

Thanks!

Guys ,  ,

I've finally done it !   :-[

Going to Bike week from the 8th to the 18th , has got "eye-brows" raised around my house.   Seems , my wife and son are having to go Hungry without me around to cook for them (or so the excuse goes).  :-/

I'd like to go to ride the SiSterS again but April may be too soon for me to get away for a week again.

I'm not supposed to tell it yet , but , my Son may be graduating from the Air Force Boot-Camp in Texas sometime the first half of 2018 .   Its Still in the planning stage so I don't know for sure yet .     But if it works out that he does then , I'll put the Guzzi in the truck and the wife and I will head to Texas. for a week.     I should know more by time I get back from Florida.

I think I find-out just where the Air Force Boot Camp is. ?

There will be some other events going on this summer - the locations and dates are up for discussion.

Kick Stand Lodge - I plan on going to this area a couple of times this summer.  July is going to be pretty busy for me as my wife and I will be on vacation July 14-21.  These trips could be planned in advance - or have the potential to be last minute if the weekend weather looks appealing.

On August 4th & 25th Deals gap is having evening races for 50cc bikes in their parking lots - the Kick Stand Lodge is just 15 minutes down the road and it might be fun to go watch the races and then head home to the peaceful campground at KSL.....does anyone have a preference for August 4th or 25th (plan on the 4th and rain date to the 25th?).

I'd Know that Face Anywhere !

My truck (Ranger plus-cab XLT).  4L engine (20 ish- mpg)

or

I've got a 5x8 (Tractor Supply-Black-Friday Sale) low-riding, Ramp Trailer made to haul  two Motorcycles (wheel-catchers and boards to roll wheels on) , but nothing great to pull it with.  Its the diamond metal that air can flow through.   I've got a Astro Van to pull it with but MPG is 16-17- ish with the trailer behind it.   I took it to pick up the Guzzi.
I'll  measure the rear opening of the Van tomorrow.   I'm sure the mirrors and windshields would have to come off and the two rear bench seats taken out , but if they would fit inside then the Van gets 26-22 mpg running 65-72 mph ...

So far I see you considering a trip from your house of about three to four days to get there and three to four days to get back at a fuel cost per person of at least $50-60 per day plus food and lodging.   And so far you seem to be planning to take a major vehicle and tow the bikes.

Such a long expensive trip needs more to it than a simple getting there and getting back again.   String some place/event beads on this thread and it might get more interesting to do.

Planning 500 miles a day means  ~8~  hours on the road a day.   On four lane superhighways, for day after day.

For me, I see two days spent to get to your house, going slow enough to make it enjoyable, staying off the four lane roads as much as I might be able to.   And this is done riding the bike.

This is all I see at this stage of planning.    You had mentioned Lancer's place as a stayover previously, is that still what you are thinking?

Might you consider splitting this off into a separate discussion thread so the others interested in the trip might chime in?

You might get creative and make it work.  If the problem is the handlebar height, you can remove the preload spacers (and/or springs) on top of the fork springs and let the front sag to reduce the height - if you do this I would put a block under the frame when you tie the bike down to prevent bottoming out the forks.  You will then need to be able to prop the bike up on something while you put the spacers/springs back in the forks.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018 and other ramblings.

Its good to have "Many Minds" pooling in the same direction sometimes !  ;)

...........................

While  getting the Harley ready to sell I  had the idea to remove the 4" long top bolts that (in effect) made the forks longer separately instead of letting them go with the bike and sell them seperately .  Their about $100 by themselves.   The bike was jacked up till the front wheel was off the ground and I couldn't get the springs compressed and the (standard) bolts started into the fork tubes ... Clearly a case of the Springs were stronger than me.
So
I put a ratchet strap over the top of the nut (w/drift spacer) and pulled the nut down and into the threads (gently) to get it started ...
That whole episode left me wondering "what do those Really Heavy bike have "  .
I'm thinking "Just stick to the truck idea" ,  :) ... or better yet, Just Ride to the Events and enjoy the trip.
..........................................................

From personal experience I've observed that :  500 miles a day at 70 mph (500 divided by 70) does not equal 7.14 hours ...
It usually equals about 9-to-10 hours.

But , if we're traveling as a group and having fun ... who cares !   ;D

I have also noticed the same thing with Mapquest or GPS devices.  For short trips that can be done without stopping for fuel, rest stops or food, the arrival time is believable provided that you don't get into any traffic snarls.  But on trips your chances of getting into construction or accident delays increases substantially, and on trips where you need to stop for fuel/food/rest - the travel time takes far longer.....especially on a bike where I tend to avoid riding on the interstate unless absolutely necessary.

Perhaps it is a result of my previous work schedule only allowing travel on holiday weekends - but I am amazed how hard it it to travel and make good time.....it seems we always get into a long traffic jam somewhere along the route.

With some time spent choosing the route and the night stops, a long trip by bike becomes a journey worth doing, rather than an ordeal to be suffered through.

10-4 Oldfeller. I'm witcha.

I have to admit that even though I have the highway gearing on the S40, I am keeping my eyes open for a good deal on possibly a Suzuki M50, a Vulcan 900 or a Triumph America. I think the 800-900cc with EFI could make a real difference on the highway. Not to mention 2 cylinders.

SpringMan , I'm hate to admit it ... but ...  ::) ... : Well , I've noticed I don't have the Strength I used to and I've seen friends who refuse to admit the same thing to themselves , then end-up getting over-powered by their Bigger bikes.   Some of them go to Three-Wheelers (ain't no fun to ride) only to find they suck fuel like a car.    My solution is to go to a lighter machine.   Thats why I got the Guzzi V-7 (750cc-400 lbs).

I said all that to say all this :

I know a feller who has a Very Road Worthy 883 Harley w/the tall 1200cc primary w/new-chain on it.  It also has a like new 888 Metzeler  tire on the front and a Very long life Michelin Commander II on the back.
It also has soft saddle bags , short back rest , luggage rack , and crash bars already installed   .    Fuel injected too ..

If a feller had $2500.oo he could probably drive it home any dry weekend he wanted to .

MM.....you are only a Wiseco piston and cam away from the Savage engine you have always wanted.  Even it you aren't wanting the piston - a cam change can be done in an afternoon.

When are you going to need a cam chain replacement?  That might be the perfect time for a new performance cam!

Ya'll may not believe this  ... :  when I first got my current S-40 it had less than 5,000 miles .   One of the first things I did was to modify the cam tensioner w/extention hole and softer spring (1/3 as strong).    Now the bike has right at 40,000 miles and here is a picture of what the tensioner looks like now.  I put a new clutch disk in last week and it might be one more click than the picture.    Two clicks out and quiet and happy !     :)

I'm taking a Clue from YouzGuyz here ... he has 150,000 miles on a stock engine.   Don't know how many cam-chains ???  :-?    At the current rate of wear , I might have to put the Nitrate Chain on after  about 100,000 miles of the Stock Chain ...

........................................................................................

With some time spent choosing the route and the night stops, a long trip by bike becomes a journey worth doing, rather than an ordeal to be suffered through.

The Journey being part of the Destination  8-)  .  I'm game !   How many States can I check-off my Map before we get back home ?  :P

I was chatting with a feller at Chic-Fila today who went to Sturgis last year .    He said he had been twice .   One time Rode and one time trailered.   Either way , he Said its about 24 hours of driving from middle Tn.
We'll see how we do on this next adventure with 500 mile days .

Versey , you seem to be doing good with the planning and I'm glad you are !   I'm planning on going in the August time frame , so count me in on whatever you come up with .

If we're going to be in the neighborhood of Mt.Rushmore I want to sneak around the back side of it to see if its true .  ::)

August is a good time for me.

Meeting at MM's is too far out of the way for me. Steve may want to meet at MM's since he is in Atalanta, but I do not know what his plans are. For me SD is almost straight north through Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. I believe heading to Lancer's would take me a bit more easterly but I would be happy to meet there.

I watched National Geographic Channel last night and they had a program on the Smoky Mountain National Park.  The part that got my attention was when they discussed the seasons......and they stated that the mountains becomes as wet as a "rain forest", and the area can get more than 80" of rain a year!  That seems to closely parallel the weather patterns that we try to ride through each summer - with rain showers every afternoon!

If the riding weren't so darn nice - maybe we should try to find a dryer climate to go ride in.

I use google maps for my basic planning.
guess at cites for the break points and use the info to confirm.
I also look for cosco locations for best prices on gas, that may change my route a little.

OK. Looks like Amarillo, Tx is about 500 miles and has cheap motels. Ft. Collins, CO is another 500 miles or so and has cheap motels. Then another 500 or so to Cody, Wy. Doable.

Thanks for the offer Versy. Since you are coming from the west it looks like we will not meet up until Cody. I went to Google maps ands started in Atlanta, GA, to Lynchburg, TN, to Cody, WY to Spring, TX to see where we could meet. The paths intersect at the south eastern corner of Wyoming. Looks like Steve could meet up with MM and Oldfeller and they could all ride together. Looks like Versy and I would have to go solo. If the timing worked out just right I could conceivably ride the last couple of hundred miles or so with the guys coming from the east. I am still considering buying a slightly larger bike for this trip. I'll keep my eyes open to see if a good deal comes up on a good bike for me.

If we could time it correctly we could possibly meet at the Chugwater Soda Fountain in Chugwater, WY.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018 and other ramblings.
Post by Oldfeller on 03/06/18 at 14:41:22

And we'd meet Steve at MM's house.

Question becomes, plan for 3 days of travelling to make it easy on the old dudes?
Alternative is two ball busing 750+ mile days that might not do too well with our old bodies.

Doing a 3 day plan we could stay night #1 at Graham Cave State Park after doing 460 miles .....

https://freecampsites.net/#!1627&query=sitedetails

And on night #2 we could rough it at Smith Creek Recreational Area after doing 445 miles

https://freecampsites.net/#!62926&query=sitedetails

There is no camping that is very near Chugwater, WY that does not put us going well out of the way just to get to it.   Vedauwoo is about the closest thing and that puts us roughly 2.5 hours of extra travel there and back (all out of the way travel).

However, if we could exchange a dot on Life360 we could find other better (closer to real camping located just off of Interstate 25) places to meet up at where we could lurk like vultures and then pounce upon you as you rode by .......

Example of an easier place would be staying night #3 at Crow Valley Campground  (at 410 miles travel)  were we would camp the night before meetup day then we would be sitting on Interstate 25 to bushwhack your dot as you rode by that intersection.

https://freecampsites.net/#!91251&query=sitedetails

Prime roving dot bushwack sitting is at a McDonalds complete with free wifi

Meeting up really isn't hard using the Life360 dot system -- we can find you in a big campground should you want to meet at your night stopping place providing it has cell service in the general area.

Post by springman on 03/06/18 at 18:23:04

Yep, that is the last one. It is roughly a 1000 mile ride for me to Briggsdale so I would do that in 2 days. I think we need to check with Versy as to what days are good for him so we can start deciding on a date.

Sounds good Versy. I'll check my calendar at work and with the family and see what works for me. We have a major project going on at work that could possibly throw a monkey wrench into my plans but hopefully it won't. I am thinking first week of August but I need to look closely at things at to better guess what is the best time. Steve, being a realtor I believe has more leeway in being able to take off.

Yes, I am fully retired now.    I am also 90% fully recovered from my last set of repairs but I sense I have gotten a good bit older during that entire involved process.   Example, hearing range is much poorer -- my ability to hear high pitched sounds is about gone.    Every time I go under full anesthesia I seem to lose some hearing and I did it four times in a row last fall.

A thought .......

Twisted Sisters is over half way to Cody, is there any possibility to chain the two trips together?

Doing so saves some of us at least 3-6 days of repeated travel time and the same crew of folks is going on both.

Take it from Verslagen's perspective, he goes to Twisted and visits Cody on the way back home.
We just ride along with him for a bit to keep him company ......

Who knows?   Neil might want to come along if we do it that way ......

I am beginning to see advantages to group travel, as when one gets sick or has a road incident he has coverage.

There's only 1400 miles between the 2, practically on the way.   :-?
Maybe when I'm retired.

That said, we're about a month out of doing the twisted sisters.

Oldfeller, glad to hear you retired. I still have a few years to go. Interesting what you mention about the hearing loss. I have not had any operations recently but my hearing has really taken a turn for the worse over the past year. I guess that is just part of getting older.

As far as putting the 2 trips together Versy is right, there is a good 1400 miles or so between the sisters and Cody.

Weather in Texas this year has been a bit odd, much wetter than normal. I do not know if this is going to continue or if that means we are heading into a dry spell soon. MM we need you Almanac!

I spent a "Tour of Duty" in ElPaso (5,000+ feet) .   I got there on my SX-650 Yamaha.

At the time I didn't understand  much about fuel mixtures and such.   But it didn't take long to learn .   Seems like I went from 135 mains to 127.5 to fix it.
I could have just left it alone and suffered the low MPG but I had about 20 months to spend there so I changed to the lean burn.   Funny thing is when I got back to TN I didn't feel the need to switch back !
With the factory jets I was getting 42MPG average , with the leaning jets I was getting close to 50MPG.   Gas was cheep back then , but I like 50 more than 42 any day .

Once ya have enough power the rest don't mater the way I see it !   ;)

I believe I'm running 150 main and 47.5 slow speed .   I've got a colection to choose from if ya think you might like to try a different size.   Changing jets is less than a one hour thing.

ON A SINGLE that is !   ;)

If you are jetted a bit rich at lower elevations - it will get worse as you climb.  If you are jetted properly - a few days up in the mountains isn't going to bother anything with the Savage.

What jets and air filter are you currently running?

I do not know. I have been planning on doing some work on the bike and I guess I will find out then. As best I know I have the original jets in there and she seems to run just fine here at 100 feet or so above sea level. I'm running a stock air filter for the time being. I will be putting a foam air filter in it when I get the time to sit down and tinker on it a bit. Hopefully within the next 3 weeks or so.

Good News !  :)

So , the wife's lumpectomy is the 18th .   That is near a month away from my departuare date for our Kerrville trip (12th of May)  8-).

I'm thinking leaving Saturday morning the 12th and going west till I meet the Natchez trace , then going South on it till I get to the campground at the southern end at the MS/LA border.   Camp the night , and spend the next night (13th May) with ya in Kerrville.    That makes for two 500+ mile days.

The next thing to do is plan the GAS stops ... along the trace they can be few and far between.   But , there are some good points about ridding the 50 mph trace .   At 50 mph I get 60 mpg !  ;)

Used to live in Houston... pretty good riding out in the hill country. I moved to East TN a little less than 2 years ago and now even my ride to work is awesome! I'm an hour from Cherohala, an hour from the Gap, and even less to the Devils Triangle. Great riding if anyone makes it out this way.

I'm thinking the northern part of WV to the SW corner of PA - right in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. This would be something I would trailer my bike(s) to. I'm happy with primitive camping...but I'm even happier to have a bathroom and running water. [/quote]

That sounds very interesting to me as im located in the south western corner of NY.state, the "Alleghany Foothills" region of the mighty Appalachians!
It would ne great to meet some of you folks! :)

Just perused the seasonal weather in the NC mountains -- next favorable period of decent temperatures and "relatively less rain" is the weeks of August-September.    October breaks cold and is unusable.

Hurricanes will disrupt this pretty picture, but have so far been sporadic and spread out pretty good this year.

-------------------------------   Old Man's Tour of the Good Places  ------------------------------------

this is just a sketch -- there are no details to it yet as the details depend on who is going.

Ride up, stay a night at Kickstand in the Bunkhouse, visit the Dragon Zoo for nostalgia's sake stop by Fontana Dam on the way down, go see the Road to Nowhere then get on the start of Blue Ridge Parkway at Cherokee and meander up the Blue Ridge to the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground and sleep in a cabin, mebbe eat dinner at the Rib place in Waynesville that we liked so much and do the roads we liked in that area.   Take 1 night, maybe two if stuff to do presented itself.   This constitutes a single long weekend trip to this point.

Next section isn't detailed out, but involves Mt Pisgah, Little Switzerland and Hwy 80.

If Little Switzerland is involved then I'm in for a "EASY-GOING" sight seeing type ride.   Those roads up there are "No-Joke-Cliffs" , but the Sights from up there should be on everybody's bucket list !   ;)

OldFeller if Versey is still up for Cody in August you want to put the bikes in the back of my truck and go "Site Seeing" ?     Or    Stay local and see more of NC. ?    :-?

I prefer to go durning the week when traffic is low , but , if the weekend is all we get then , Ok !

Aren't  those cabins are two night min , and need to be reserved ?

About Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground and their policies .......  if a cabin isn't rented or reserved, he will rent it on the day of.     I have NEVER seen all the cabins rented at the same time, especially during the week.    I think we can have a cabin if we want one.

He has copious grassy areas to put a tent on, no reservations needed.   We have stayed in a tent before when needed, you got a dandy blue one.

If all that fails, would you believe this exists less than 10 minutes away from Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground going up towards the Parkway?

Free too, hard to argue with free.

https://freecampsites.net/#!158897&query=sitedetails

It is my opinion that we get too all tied up reserving places and having the weather (or ever changing circumstances) rob us of our money.

I have no plans to go to the center of the USA this summer, my ability to sit the bike that long just does not exist any more.   My willingness to sit in a truck for at least 4 days just to cover the long long driving distances also just doesn't exist any more either.

Pick a time span you are interested in for the meander trip and sorta decide how long you want to stay gone.   The meander trips have always been 4-5 days long by the time we actually finished them as they are paced rather casually.

Gots to have us a little bit of chipmunk protection, you know --- we are going into wild rabid chipmunk territory again and our VERY LIVES are at risk accordingly .......

As far as Little Switzerland goes, commercial campgrounds abound near and around Hwy 80.   If you want some free camping, it exists off the Parkway shortly before you get to Little Switzerland.

Remember that little stone restaurant that we ate dinner and breakfast at?   Who knows, it might still be there.

Remember the exiting the eatery after dark in the silent, echoing heavy sound deading
inside the cloud FOG ...... the fog ...... the fog ..... the fog  ????

The eerie glowing lights of the completely silent 18 wheeler that went by us as we were saddling up?      That piercing scream of that little chipmunk as you crushed his back legs and tail with your front tire?

He vowed revenge you know, and they still have your wanted poster up on the entrance wall inside the chipmunk burrow.

Sorry Versy, my legs have given up so badly, but no joke, I have to pace out mowing the entire lawn out over several days now.

The steep tilted parts get a special "fresh, early in the morning" run and I catch the easier (larger) parts of the lawn separately.

But I am enjoying planning for chipmunk protection .....

Here is a climate chart (temp low temp high and rain) that allows an easy comparison on the temperatures.

July is HOT anytime you come off the mountain tops.    We have a history of eating up some tires when we go to the mountains during July early August time period.

Got anything free on your calendar in late August-early September?

Versey, sorry I let you down also. I was really looking forward to the August adventure but just no way I can take off for 2 weeks at once at this time due to the construction of our new building. I am hoping to be able to get off for at least a week, let me rephrase that, I will be taking at least a week vacation sometime soon. Meaning I am open to a ride that I can get done in one week.

I'm not really sure what my time window is for taking a week.  I am thinking if I do not take one soon it may get more difficult. But riding in 90 degrees plus weather is not that much fun. I do that (90 degrees +) over here all the time but for an hour or so at a time max. Once it gets in the triple digits it is just ridiculous.

Well Versey, you and I are the same age and I think we both look OK for our age. So, I'm not too concerned about waiting another year or so for that ride. On the other hand, MM has a few years on us, he's getting pretty old. I hope he can hang with us. 8-)

I'm not sure what you are talking about when you mention going to Lancer's. This year has gotten a bit complicated at work and I cannot leave for 2 weeks for the Montana/South Dakota trip. I will hopefully be able to have a full week off sometime soon.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018 and other ramblings.

That's OK , my calendar is kind of crowded too .   My son is going to Air Force Basic (he thinks Sept.) so I'm in for more Family time as Sept. gets near …
if I slip away for a three day Dragon Run that might be OK but a two-week Western Adventure just ain't going to work this year.    :-[

Then next year it will just be me and the wife so I think putting the bike in the truck and us meeting ya at the campground might be the normal run of events.
OR
I might be limited to one adventure a year when leaving the wife "home alone" .
SO
that could be a two week  "Western Adventure" … ?    :-?
Lancer's place is one days ride west of me (580'ish miles)  and a good place to meet folks coming out of Texas and there about .

…………………………………………………

I'm still feeling good about 600 mile super slab days and/or 10 hours in the saddle (back roads) per day.    ;)

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2018 and other ramblings.
Post by springman on 07/16/18 at 08:38:54

Lancer's is also a one day ride for me (about 400 miles north). If I can get the time off from work I am up to riding to his place just about any time he invites us. I was poking fun at you MM, but you have a harder backside than do I. I'm not sure I am good for much more than 400 miles in a day.

There is something that don't seem right about spending the summer with out at least one Dragon run.    I know we visited the Dragon one day with the Two Wheels of Suches ride (even had a token  Ducati with us).

Before winter sets in I might have to run over for a Day and come back the next day if nothing else ?

I wish I could do the ride in the Smokies but distance is getting to be more difficult to deal with.  I was hoping to be able to something in between, either your place or at Dave’s if he hosted another event but with what his wife is under going that is probably not even on his long distance radar.
I have a couple of surgery’s coming up so I will not be doing much riding through the end of the year.

A visit to MM's wouldn't be bad for me either.   Classical shoot and scoot and a chance to see Lancer again.

Neither would a trip to Kickstand or Blue Ridge, but the takers might be fewer I do believe.

I've got cataract surgery on both eyes and a minor urologic correction and both may fall in September, or there about.  Won't be any riding for that month at all.   I have pre-surgery app's this month so can't go now. But sometime after, perhaps the 1st or part of the 2nd week of Oct.  Colors is in the 3rd week so that is out and .... that pretty much leaves out the 2nd week too though.  My wife would be unhappy if I was gone the week before Colors.
November is pretty cool or cold maybe.
Makes it hard to carve out fun time.

Maybe I should just wait until spring time.

I heard from my oldest grandson, he is going into the Marine Corps.
My youngest daughter is a Lt. Col. in the Corps and she spent some time with him recently during a stop in SC while on their move from N.J. to New Orleans.  She went with him to talk to the recruiter and I think that helped him make up his mind.  He has been talking about the military for over a year and was thinking either the Navy or the Marines.
He has had a few issues but he seems to have finally grown out of that.
He will be 20 this year.
Very proud of him.

Thank you, he has a determined attitude and that is important in this.
He has some push behind him that will act as an encouragement to succeed.  My youngest daughter is a Lt. Col. in the USMC now and she went with him to see the Marine recruiter a few weeks back.  He really looks up to her, she is his only “Auntie”.
