Title: Things on a bucket list
Post by MMRanch on 11/10/17 at 21:27:12

Guys ,

So , I was hanging out at the Guzzi site , and found something for US !

http://www.roadrunner.travel/2012/11/04/virginia-state-route-16-becomes-the-back-of-the-dragon/

Their campground is $24.oo  which is more than the Dragon is :

But

They Boast of 260 curves in 32 miles ...

So basically a 32 mile long Dragon ???    Get in good physical shape before arriving !   8-)

You will be fine on the Savage , on the sportster well that might be a different story ! ;D

That is almost the same distance from me as Deals Gap and the Dragon......so the real question is how good the surrounding roads are, how good are the camping grounds, how much traffic is there.....and how "friendly" are the folks running the radar?

I an up for a trip to the area next summer to check it out.

A worthy side trip on a "up the Blue Ridge and back down it" weeklong excursion.

Dave, it is Virginia -- not friendly on that radar at all.    Not at all ......

What was the name of that steam Museum again ???

Ruttly

I might sell the sportster in the spring , I've got the tank off of it right now repainting it.  I had MMRanch  decal on it , but to sell it I'm going with strait glossy black with the original crome thing down the center part.    It is a little heavy for flicking through the twisty.  [ch128514] ::)

I'm using the Guzzi for my "We" bike now. [ch128513].
It replaces the Sportster in ever way and does it close to 170 lbs lighter. [ch128512][ch128512][ch128512]

Easy to like !

You know I'd love to run the parkway all the way up to the high mountains in the northern states , and if we keep cost down I could do it.

MM , Yeah my sporty is a handful in the tight twisties especially my favorite pass thru the hills ,it's as rough as it is twisty ,but it loves long sweeping turns. So mine will be sold eventually too. There are some exciting bikes coming to the states in the next few years so I'll keep it till I find a new girl.

The museum is in Coolspring, PA - it is pretty far north very near I-80, about 5 hours from the north end of the Blueridge Parkway.  It is an intermal combustion museum that has some of the engines that put an end to the steam era.  The museum is open on the 3rd Saturday of every month.  I believe it is too far away to be incorporated with any event that involves riding in NC/TN/VA.

Dave, you are right, that's too far from the end of things .....

This new "back of the Dragon" road lacks the density of turns achieved by the Dragon (311 turns in 13 miles) or the density achieved our little Hwy 32 which follows the same pattern of many many turns over many fewer miles.

(but yes, I was always a big fan at stopping for a good long rest stop, a drink and a piss at the country store at the end of HWY 32)

;)

MM, when we go off on our roaming trips, we will stay for free everywhere we go -- gas and food will be our only daily out of pocket cost.    And we will stay off the Interstates as they cause "bad mileage" out the arse compared to normal roads and speeds.

Post by MMRanch on 11/12/17 at 14:45:54

Yea , I've noticed ridding the mountains on our excursions I've gotten as high as 62mpg.   Normally I get 52-55 , unless I'm really trying to stretch the gallons but even then I only get high 50's.   I think its this 55mph-vs-40mph averages.
I do love those roads where 40mph average is driving way too fast !  ;D

Title: Re: Things on a bucket list

I believe there will be 2 or 3 trips in the summer that are not going to be the "mega" ride.  I want the gang to go to Suches, we can go to VA and try the "Back of the Dragon", and a trip to see Mo at the Kickstand Lodge would be nice.

I believe the weather at Suches is the same as the Kickstand Lodge - the Back of the Dragon is farther north and may be different......and hopefully more consistently dry!  If it doesn't have those afternoon showers.....that would be a huge benefit!  I hope we can find a campground as nice as the Kickstand Lodge up in VA.

That speeding up on the straits is where the trouble w/"The Law" comes from , and fair enough too !    Ain't no 140 mph going on here !  ;D

I've got a Nephew who got into trouble with doing 130+ on the Natchez Trace Parkway , by time he got through with it ... it cost :
about $3000.oo in fines
120 hrs. community service
inflated insurance for the next 5 years
several days tied-up with court dates
Untold Lawyer Bills ???
and if there is a second offence then it will be a Felony and he'll do jail time and loose his 2nd amendment rights. ....

If we have any members in the areas we want to go-to --- how about joining in the dialog here and give-up some of the finer details ...

So many places to ride and it would be so easy if we had "connections" in the proposed areas.

We need some tour guides .  :-?

Black Hills area ... ?
Back of the Dragon area ?
All them other places that begin with "B"

:)

Title: Re: Things on a bucket list
Post by Dave on 11/13/17 at 09:57:31

I spent a bit of my lunch break looking for lodging at the Back of the Dragon.  It doesn't seem there are any "bargains" when it comes to finding cabins - and the campgrounds appear to be the local public stuff.  There was a special ATV campground/cabin place - from what I know about those folks it could be a bit rowdy compared to the peace and calm we are used to at places like the Kickstand Lodge, Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground or Two Wheels of Suches.  The touristy activity in this area may be too new to have the older established (affordable) places that we have come to know and love.

I am still up for a trip...I just haven't discovered a place to stay.

Title: Re: Things on a bucket list
Post by MMRanch on 11/13/17 at 17:26:18

Well , we got all winter to find places .   Dave , if we promise not to snore how many will your trailer sleep ?     :-?

;D

I'll check "campground" in the area before spring get here.   Could be we have to stay in the next town over ...

or

Weekly rental motel ???   Rates for Sunday -Thursday are usually very good , compared to weekends .   ;)

The place we found in Texas was ideal , 4 bunks in a cabin + bath-house close by.   If we had to ride 30 miles to get a suitable bunking arrangements ... so what ???  ;)   as long as it is a Fun Ride !   :)

There is only room for me in the trailer....and sometimes the wife.  It is really snuggly for two!

I don't have any problem riding a bit to get to the camping place - I just didn't find any websites for the kind of campground or hotel that we have available down at the Dragon.

I am not sure the "marketing" department for your free campground completed their training! :-?

"Dismal Falls is nearby and Dismal Creek provides fishing and wading."

It does seem that the area in WV is dedicated to ATV riders.  Camping with these folks gives me a cause to question how well we might blend in - the ATV gang tends to be a bit rowdier than our group.......I don't sleep very well when other campers stay up and party until very late.  (It pays to know your limitations and weaknesses....I am a light sleeper).

Title: Re: Things on a bucket list
Post by Oldfeller on 11/14/17 at 05:36:16

Same tool also spots the pay me campsites of which there are several.   The Appalachian trail goes through the area, so that accounts for several of the camping spots, the ones with no roads noted near by.   The area seems pretty empty, other than that.

Dismal Creek is the name of the nearby creek, it has a set of falls on it called Dismal Falls.

This is the real name of the campground -- Walnut Flats Campground in Jefferson National Forest

And here is a "couple in a car" video review that shows the road styles in the area --- which are not very impressive compared to NC mountains, as well as a complete review of the campground itself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weSygXe8grE

This second reviewer is a fairly well off retired "homeless" man who pops between free spots as a life style, so he is fairly thorough and impartial with his information.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h3q3TwTzNA&feature=youtu.be

Note, both sets of folks mention intermittent showers popping up during the evenings, etc.

Guys, we can do better for both mountains and for scenery on a trip starting at Kickstand and roaming off to where-ever we want in Georgia, etc.

Lastly, to inform you very completely, here are two Goldwings running the DRAGON's BACK at speed.   The Cherohala is a more thrilling sweeper road and we know many more challenging roads already ....   That meandering road around the lake area near Robbinsville comes to mind as a "superior" little road.

Yep....me too!  This summer I plan on doing quite a few overnight and/or long weekend trips - and the wife may come along on a few.  A Kickstand weekend, a Two Wheels of Suches weekend, a ride in PA for Gary_from_NJ and I to do a Cafe' bike ride, and maybe a ride to the Cumberland Falls area in KY.....and a trip to the Back of the Dragon.

The Back of the Dragon trip looks like a nice 6+ hour ride on the back roads (probably 8-9 with the wife and frequent stops)...the Mapquest route looked to have a very nice curvy road to get me to Tazewell, VA.  I could ride down in a day and find a place to stay, send a day or two riding the area...then spend a day riding back.

What would be good is if this area doesn't have the afternoon pop up rain showers in the afternoon - it might be a good place to go riding when the Blue Ridge area is in the peak of the summer pop-up showers.

I've been follow this thread...and now that I've been mentioned...I might as well join the conversation.

I'd love nothing more then to join the gang on a group ride. I'd be happy to load my cafe racer - and my street tracker - into my pick-up truck and meet up. I have a pop-up tent that allows my pick-up bed to double as a camper, so I'm good with camping too.

Driving to TN is just too far. And heading south from there doesn't help. Dave and I have been talking about a ride in the PA/WV area (in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains - twisty roads with elevation changes) and I'm hoping that a few can make that. I watch the ride threads hoping to see one that I can make.

Post by MMRanch on 11/15/17 at 22:17:53

Gary , Dave , and whoever else .   When ya get ready let me know and if at all possible I'll meet ya'll there !
If we plan a set date you know it will rain us out , but some week when the weather looks  good  we can just GO !

I'll probably just ride the Savage following the GPS Fastest way till we meet up , then there will be plenty of back roads.  :)

One day there , three days to ride , one day back home !  1000 miles easy !    yeeeehaaaa    ;D

Any of those campgrounds looks just fine , and I will usually bring a tent even if I don't use it.   That Walnut Flats would be just dandy , but I don't mind paying for a campsite if necessary .
I carry those baby-wipe things so a shower isn't even necessary till my hair gets oily.     I guess one could take care of the hair problem at a bathroom sink ----   ;)

As 2018 approaches...we can set some target dates.  It might be best to pick the days in advance, then allow for a cancellation if the weather just doesn't work out.  My schedule is most likely going to allow for arrival Wednesday night  and departure on Sunday.

For the trips to the Kickstand Lodge and Two Wheels of Suches - the camping is cheap and the bathhouses are great.  I really need a shower after riding in those 90-95 degree summer days!

For a trip to the Back of the Dragon - it is pretty much an all day ride for MM, Oldfeller and I to get there.  I most likely will ride the Honda down for the trip and enjoy the back roads on the way. My route has some really fun looking roads to travel once I get to the southern half.

Irvine, KY is on the north end and is about 2 hours from my house.  I found a report that said the roads are excellent, and the loop takes about 2 hours to complete if you don't stop much.

I don't know if the weather will allow a ride yet this year......last week may have been our Indian Summer with October temps in the 80-90's.  Weather forecasts for the coming week is lows in the 30's and high highs in the 50's.  A look at the extended forecast shows only a few days where they expect the daytime highs to be in the low 60's.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?msa=0&ie=UTF&mid=102vc88T4sSK7Nk2H_PG5DjjRHNo&ll=37.55883308792213%2C-83.88077883295921&z=11

I have done some volunteer work in this area (Booneville/Beattyville), and Owsley County is one of the poorest counties in the USA.  The coal mining and lumber industries died, and the folks that are left behind have very little opportunity for employment.  The land is very rugged and doesn't provide much opportunity for other uses.  A few years ago Booneville was trying to promote the tourist use of the area for ATV riders - I don't know if they succeeded in making anything happen.

I am not sure where to stay.....Lago Linda Hideaway looks like it has some potential.  It says weekends are busy with rock climbers.....I betcha those folks are young and like to party and make a lot of noise after dark!  (I am pretty spoiled by places like the Kick Stand Lodge and Two Wheels of Suches where the campers/bikers go to bed early and don't make a lot of noise).

The Bunk-House is only $40.00 + tax per night and sleeps 4 !

That's as good as our spot in Texas .

This is a Nice Looking place in a Nice Location !   Camping $6.00 per-person , hot showers , flushing bath rooms , free Wi-Fi , all in a area that is catering to tourist.

So , I just added it to my "Camp Ground" list .

Anybody interested in a trip to the Kick Stand Lodge either this weekend or next?  The weather is potentially doable...once we get later in the year I doubt it will be warm enough.

Next Wed/Thur/Fri/Sat all look good at this point (10/31 - 11/3).  Sun is threatening rain.  The mornings and evenings will be chilly - the afternoons will be OK and I would imagine the traffic will be light.

http://i64.tinypic.com/10yqiae.png

The other option that will likely favor MM and I riding together is to try the Hillbilly Triangle.  That ride is only a few hours of travel time for both of us.

The weather in that area is not real promising at the moment - but it could change in the next 10 days.

Hey, just caught this thread.  I would like to squeeze in one last trip but not positive about the schedule yet.  This weekend we're supposed to go to an event (we could change our mind and not go) and I sorta need to get some things done around the house with the current house project this weekend also.  Next weekend I don't think there is anything on the calendar.

Let me know what you're thinking and maybe I can plan ahead for next weekend?  May see if my brother wants to tag along.

I'm REALLY missing  them warm summer days.   I was just looking at the temps for the 29th-31st of Oct.

Makes my bones ache just thinking about the low 50's for the high temps.   The temps here tomorrow are forcast in the mid 60's so durning the middle of the day I'll get a ride in for 2 or 3 hours .

The afternoons here have been in the 60's and warm - night time has dropped down to the 30's.

Unfortunately I have been doing yard work and cutting/stacking firewood on those nice afternoons.  I am way behind on cutting my firewood for winter - I just could not get it done this summer as the 90+ temperatures just made cutting firewood too brutal.

It is going to be 67 degrees on the Dragon today!  It is a shame I can't be there.......... :-[

Some times we get a day or two in the fall where the low is high 40's and uppers 60's for the day time.

I'm sure Marcia would tell me "Have Fun and I'll see ya in a couple days" .    But , we're having low 30's at night now.

On a "Dragon Run" , we know there is a nice campground waiting for $12,oo ish / night .     Has anybody been to the Hillbilly Triangle camping area ?

Guys , when we get a 3 day nice weather strip I'll see if Marcia want to "just take off" for a few days.   That would mean Truck w/Bike in the back , and probely a Motel.    So , we got the "Fall Color" thing upon us now .    I'd love to go for another ride in the next couple weeks but haven't even looked for a motel yet , I'll try to get that done in the next day or two.

MM:

I spoke with Deb about making 1 more trip this year, and suggested that if the weather doesn't allow a trip to the Kick Stand Lodge - that I was going to find a day to go ride the Hillbilly Triangle.  It will take about 3 hours for me to get to the north end at Irvine, KY, then another 3 hours to ride it, then another 3 hours to get home....it would be a very long day (especially since an early morning departure could have temperatures in the high 30's or low 40's).  She suggested I get a hotel and just make a 2 day event out of it. The roads in this area do provide very good riding and lots of rural, curvy, hilly scenery.

This week is not possible - the weather just isn't going to cooperate.

The next 2 weeks have some potential if the rain/drizzle chances go away for 1 or 2 days.  Maybe it would be realistic to leave home early in the morning and trailer the bike to the area while the weather is just too cold to ride - then unload the bike and ride the Hillbilly Triangle in the warmer afternoon hours.....then load the bike back up on the trailer and head home when the cold/dark evening hours return. (It could be made a 2 day event if we got a hotel room to stay overnight and ride again the next day).

Y'all keep me posted.  I am pretty sure I can make a KSL trip work by doing my usual leaving Friday after work and riding Sat Sun, coming home late Sun night. I looked at the drive to HT and for just a Sat and Sun ride I am not sure if I can get that far north ...but somehow Dave makes those long drives with such apparent ease.

Anyhow, if the weather permits a 'KSL' trip and it just makes sense to make this an easy and warm trip I am up for getting a little hotel room.  Maybe the Two Wheel Inn in Robbinsville (just over the mountain from KSL) is an option. I have stayed there and it's pretty nice and not terribly pricey.

The location of the Hillbilly Triangle was a bit surprising to me - I thought it was half way between MM and I....however MM would have a trip of more than 5 hours compared to my 3 hours.  (Even if I find a spot farther south it doesn't cut much travel time off his trip).  Maybe for a summer 2019 trip we could find a spot farther south in KY, and make the ride to the triangle part of the adventure in the day rides.

The weather in the Kick Stand Lodge area looks like it could work if the rain chances go away.......they look even more promising in 2 weeks (Nov 8 - 10).  The mornings are likely going to be a bit chilly, I will have a car and we could take the car into Robbinsville for breakfast and wait for the sun to warm things up a bit.

You guys posting the weather up there makes me glad I'm in Fla. , rode 380 miles on a extended lunch and range run yesterday. But all FLAT and no fun curves to speak of.
Planning to ride up to Charlotte,NC. next weekend to meet up with little brother at some dirt track races. That will be the last of my northern rides for the year.
Coming east from Salt Lake City (and the Salt Flats) in August it was low 50's and blusterly in Wyoming overnite, don't want to do that or worse again if I can avoid it.
I'm just over 20k for the year, so far. Worst road of the year was south on the Dragon at 7AM in the rain! That road is fun on a nice afternoon, BUT, in the rain it is SCARY! Would be worse in rain at night.

Our church had a Gospel Sing tonight.....my wife went early to work the ticket counter - so I rode the motorcycle.  I left at 6 PM and it was 58 degrees, and on the way home at 10:30 it was 48 degrees.

Unfortunately.....this is the kind of local riding I am going to have to sneak in this late in the year - there likely will still be some 60 degree afternoons now and then.  As soon as the salt hits the roads.....the motorcycles get put away until the spring rains wash all the salt off the roads.

Those cool nights have put me out of the camping mood .

The 8th - 10th are looking to be about as good as we are going to see for a while.  Night time temps are scary as they are below 40 - daytime highs are 65 on Thursday, 68 on Friday, 58 on Saturday, 62 on Sunday.

I don't know if the Kick Stand Lodge will be open in November.......I kinda think the bunkhouse and shower areas might just be a bit too "cool" for a pleasant stay.  We could stay at Deals Gap - but we will likely have a lot of "down" time waiting for things to warm up in the morning and dark comes pretty quickly this time of year - so I believe it might be better to be closer to a town with restaurants and shops.

I will likely drive down on Wednesday night and ride Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun.....although the weather on Wednesday and the Monday look really good as well.  So MM..if you want to go let us know what days you want to be included in the lodging.  It appears the room are set up for 2 folks at $79.95....maybe we can squeeze in a third but it appears the motorcycle garage will only fit 1 large or 2 small bikes.  The apartments appear to be set up to sleep up to 4 and have a garage that claims to hold 2-1/2 motorcycles....the rate is $100 for 2 people and $10 for each additional and a $25 cleaning fee.  I can bring a cot and set it up in the smaller room if the Two Wheel Inn allows that.

Right now is not a good time for me to take off on an adventure , it may be next spring's  trip before Normal has re-settled into my house .   My heart says go ride , but waiting till spring might be the more prudent choice .

I sure apricate being included , but I need to sit this one out.

I just got an email from Bobby at the Kick Stand Lodge - they are closed for the winter and will re-open May 1st.

The grill at Deals Gap closes on Oct. 31.  The store will be open until November 11.....so we can stop in and buy fuel, drinks and get warmed up if needed.

Sorry you can't come and play for a couple days MM......we will shiver along without you! :-?

It is 45 degrees and I got bundled up and I am out riding, and I am cold!

I have too much air blowing up my pant legs, and too much air coming through the legs of the insulated Carhart bibs. I am going to put on my rain gear on the way home and see if that helps. I am not very well equipped for cold weather riding.

The weather forecast is just a bit less joyful......seems a cold front is moving into the area Thursday night.  Highs are going to be a few degrees cooler than forecast last week.  With any luck things will improve.

I have decided to drive down early on Thursday and arrive around noon, and go riding to enjoy the only day that is up in the 60's.

The forecast keeps getting worse - a cold front moves into the area Thursday night.  Friday looks a bit miserable....Saturday is cold!  The cold may be bearable - but not if wet is mixed in!

I am willing to still give it a try - if it proves to just be miserable riding for an afternoon we could go to Maggie Valley in my car and visit the Wheels of Time.  If it gets too miserable to stay....we can pack up and leave!

Today (Friday) is a rain out.....it is supposed to rain all day.  I am hiding in the Huddle House at the moment and using their Wi-Fi.  I will spend the rest of the day shopping/sightseeing/driving around and exploring.  I have rain gear.....if I get really bored I may find a place to go hiking.

Yesterday I had a good ride.  I got up at 3:30 AM and was packed and left by 4.  On the way past Fontana Lake I saw a duck swimming, then a bit later I saw another duck - but as I got closer I noticed the duck had big goofy round ears!  It turns out it was a Black Bear swimming across the lake.  I stopped and got a photo, and then as another car arrived the bear came out of the water and ran across the road.  I arrived at Deals Gap around 11:00, unloaded the bike, put on some gear, and went for a 56 degree/dry ride.  I got about half way up the Dragon and realized I needed more clothes.  I went back and added a base layer, and put on my rain gear to make me more windproof.  I rode the Dragon and saw a Sheriff had pulled over a rider on a BMW K100 with saddlebags - I can't imagine he was exceeding the speed limit by a whole bunch, as the pavement had some leaves on it and he appeared to be in his 60's.  I then rode the Foothills Parkway and expected to be able to ride the new section - but it was closed.  I rode into Townsend and got lunch and a warmer pair of gloves at Dollar Store.  I then rode to Caves Cove and continued through the park - the "Leaf Lookers" were out in force and traffic was painfully slow.  I rode 441 up to New Found Gap, and that was the last of my "dry" riding. The clouds were right down on the mountain and the road was soaked.  When I got to the other side and on to Cherokee there was a misting rain all the way back - I arrived back at Deals Gap at 6 PM, and I rode about 170 miles.  I was chilly - but never really got cold.

The next few days will be drier, and colder.  It will be time to break out all the cold weather gear and see it it works!

We're loaded up (bikes on the trailer this time since we're bringing two) and ready to head out after work today.  My usual ETA for this trip is ~10pm, but we have to drop off my brother's truck and such and may stop for a bite on the way, so we may be more in the 11pm range.

I got my new 0.75kg/mm Ninja fork springs installed and they feel MUCH better just sitting on it and wallering front and back.  I haven't ridden it at all yet so I am looking forward to feeling it on the road, and here's hoping that I didn't leave an important bolt out somewhere.  :o

Stew and his brother Bailey arrived late on Friday, the roads were still wet and the misty rain was just about over.  We left his bikes on the truck and went to bed.  When we woke the next morning the roads were dry, the sun was out, the tops of the mountains were white with a heavy frost, adn it was cold!  After our trip to the Huddle House and to the Ace Hardware to get the little handwarmer and toewarmer packs, we geared up and went in search of the Dragon.  It was a bit cold - but with our clothing it was not brutal.....it was probably in the high 30's.  At Deals Gap there were a few sports cars, and maybe 15 or so bikers wandering in/out while we where there.  We road the Dragon and it was a good ride - as we headed out past Fontana Lake we saw about 20 Camaros in a line headed to the Dragon - it was the perfect time to be leaving the area!  We continued to ride toward Tellico Plains, and finished up with the Cherohala Skyway.  The Skyway was cold - both because of the higher speeds and the elevation - I believe the top and backside got down close to 30 degrees, as the frost and ice on the trees was not melting.  We had to stop a few times to get our hands warmed up, we installed the hand warmer packs in our gloves - but the couldn't keep up while riding.  When we stopped it was possible to get our hands warm - but 10 miles later we would have to stop again and get our hands warm.  It was a nice day, we did get a bit chilly - but it was worth it and was an enjoyable day of riding.  We saw other bikes on the road until we got to the Skyway......we were the only bikers silly enough to make that ride at the end of the day - we did get home before dark (but only by a few minutes).

I am not sure where we are going today.  At 6 AM it is 23 degrees, and it is supposed to be 40 by around 10 AM and 50 by noon.  As the day warms up there will likely be a lot of Leaf Lookers - so we should stay away from the Blue Ridge Parkway and State Park roads.  Maybe a ride down 28 into Georgia?

Post by Dave on 11/12/18 at 05:01:41

We left the Two Wheel Inn right at 6PM.....my GPS was frustrating me as it said I was not going to be home until 1:10AM?  It had always been a 6 hour drive before.......why was it going to take 7 hours?  I found out the darn thing had not yet made the adjustment to Daylight Savings Time.  I change the setting in the Garmin....and it then showed an accurate arrival time.  It would have been nice to have left earlier - but the weather on Sunday was the best of the whole weekend and there was riding that "needed" to be done.  We didn't get on the road until 11 AM on most days as we felt 23 degrees was just too cold to ride - so the short 7 hour riding days meant our trips were only about half as many miles as we ride in the long summer days.

Most of our riding was done in the 30 - 40 degree range, with some short afternoon temps a bit above 40.  A base layer, ski pants, sweat shirts and a good windproof jacket proved to keep us from getting really cold - hands were a different story and when the temps were in the low 30's and we were riding at 50mph speeds cold hands were a problem.  I have somewhat poor circulation in my hands from the time I ran air hammers/grinders in the steel mill and I do have trouble keeping them warm - Stew and Bailey didn't have a good set of winter gloves (they live in the south) - my winter gloves are a $15 pair from Tractor Supply and they worked pretty well.  Riding with the winter gloves made clutch/brake/throttle use cumbersome - the thick padding made your fingers a bit stiff and it was hard to feel the levers through the padding.  Heated grips or heated gloves may be the ticket to resolving that issue.  I bought a Milwaukee battery heated vest - it worked well and at the low setting it would help to keep me warm for 6 hours.  The battery that comes with it is a 1.5 A/H, I am going to buy a couple of the 3 A/H Chinese batteries and I should be able to use the medium or high settings - and the vest is 12V so I am going to try a direct connection to the power outlet on my bike. (The only concern I have at the moment is that the charging system on the bike is between 13.8 - 14.0 volts when the bike is running.....I need to do a voltage check on the Milwaukee Li-Ion battery and see what the charged voltage is).

The riding was good.  Traffic was light, 3 out of 4 cars would pull over and let us pass - we only had about 3 folks who just refused to pull over and made us pass them on the curvy/double yellow line roads.  We rode at an enjoyable calm pace as the roads were cold and often covered with leaves - we never had a problem with icy roads.

I will post the few pictures I took tomorrow when I am at my office - I can post pictures so much easier there as this computer and internet access is slow and cumbersome (today is the Veterans Day holiday for me and I have the day off).

I am glad we went.....I had a good time! :)

MM....we missed you, sorry you couldn't come and share you cold weather riding wisdom in person.

I believe I will get some better cold weather gear - I live in a climate that requires it more than Stew.  A friend loaned me his new Tourmaster jacket, and I tried it on Sunday.  It was a huge improvement over my jacket, as the sleeves on the Touring jacket are better insulated, and they provide more room so I can wear a sweater or sweatshirt underneath - my 3 season jacket has really snug fitting sleeves and I can't wear anything with more than a long sleeve T-shirt underneath.  The Tourmaster was bulkier than my jacket and it felt far more like a coat than a jacket - but that bulk provided far more warmth and it was not restrictive in any way.

I suspect Santa will be bringing me one of these for Christmas.

On my Thursday ride I ended up riding on the Foothills Parkway with the rest of the Leaf Lookers:

Friday brought an "all day" rain, and I ended up driving the car to Helen.  I drove some nice roads, and on the way back I took Wayah Road.  The rain and leaves made the road really slippery, and it would have been treacherous on a motorcycle:

...And for anyone that frequents the area and has stayed at Two Wheel Inn, it is under new ownership as of October. Barry and Linda (POs) sold it to Eva and her retired husband (never got his name) from FL. They are bikers and were guests of TWI for years so they know the area and motorcycle culture and are very kind and supportive of us.  Let us keep our room until Sunday night at no extra charge so we could change up after our ride before going home. It's not the Ritz Carlton nor should you expect it to be, but it is a nice, clean place with everything you need for a weekend in the mountains.

If you're in the area and looking for a dedicated motorcycle hotel (or just a hotel) that will treat you nice Eva at TWI will take care of you.

Last night I was doing laundry and putting things away, and my wife put one of my gloves on.....and then commented that they felt wet inside.  I put one on, and she was right!  I used those gloves on Saturday and Sunday, and evidently my hands sweated a bit and the gloves don't vent the moisture out....that may be a good reason that I had trouble keeping my hands warm at times.

The gloves are too stiff to turn inside out - I put them on my boot drier this morning!

It was "Klim", and it can be very/very/very expensive!

The basic Adv/Touring models are around $400....and go up over $1,000 for a jacket.  Too pricey for me - but that cost likely is a result of high grade materials used to make them.  The fabric is tough, fade resistant, and they use GoreTex.  They do not have removable liners and they are not as bulky as a result........if you are going to spend a lot of time riding in cool/cold weather and bad elements - they may be worth the money.  I am going to try the cheaper route first and get the Tourmaster first - and see how fond I become of riding in the cold and wet! :-?

I rode in to work today, roughy 32 miles one way. It was 37F when I left and 40F when I got here. My gear looked pretty much like Stew's. I had insulated polyester riding pants, insulated work type leather boots, leather motorcycle jacket, t shirt, 2 sweaters and a vest, and all leather gloves. I actually felt fine until I picked up some speed and just could not understand why I was feeling as much cold as I was. It didn't take me too long to realize that I had all 4 vents on my leather jacket open. I didn't stop to close them as I was already on the HOV when I figured it out. But that tell me I could ride in still colder weather if I just zip up those vents. Do need better gloves though, they were ok for 60 minutes but I was definitely starting to feel the cold. I will say that my bike does not like the cold weather. Even after about 8 miles it would not idle. By the time I got to the office it did idle fine.

One other weird thing. I don't have a windshield on the bike and the coldest part of my body was my crotch. It appears all the wind is directed there. :o

Funny, I did not see any other bikes on the road today!

On my lunch errands there were snow flurries. Temps are in the mid 30s and moderate winds are enough to make it snow, but of course it's just melting as soon as it hits anything. Contractors working on my house 'had things to do' this afternoon so they left at lunch. Can't say that I blame them though as they are doing outside work tying in two roofs and it's chilly out there!
