Title: Tank too small?...
Post by Serowbot on 10/17/17 at 13:56:07

The HD 48 Sportster has a 2.1 gallon tank,.. good for 81 miles,... no reserve...
And it has an in-the-tank fuel pump,.. so don't make a habit of running her dry....
What was Harley thinking?.... :-?

They are hurting.
Trying anything?

It's the classic sportster tank......just like "Then Came Bronson" had on his bike.

I like the look of the tank, but it's definitely small for a 1200 cc engine.  My 2007 Sportster 883 has a 3.3 gallon tank. I know I can go over 100 miles before refueling.

What do you mean by "they are hurting"?

What Harley was thinking is if it looks cool enough we can sell thousands of them to entry level buyers cause they don't know any better,
"Yeah but it looks cool and I must be cool"
It does have 10 times the amount of cool of the new Honda Rebel 500
Good looking bike but the tank doesn't hold enough fuel  8-)

Just ride around town, and if it's time to ride in another town, put it on the trailer,

My Sportster has the 4.5 gal.  the fuel light comes on when 3 gal are gone ... but it gets 50-53 mpg.   Not really a bad vehicle if it wasn't so heavy.    :)

good enough for the needs of the average Harley rider. it's not like they're going to go anywhere...
what's the problem with the in tank pump? zillions of bikes and cars have them.
I wouldn't have a Harley but I think it looks nice.

Perhaps, if the "cool" word was criminalised things like that wouldn't happen.

It's funny ... the more I see Harley Sportsters ... the more I love my bike!

I ain't JOG but most of the web is reporting that Harley sales are way, way down: http://www.jsonline.com/story/money/2017/10/17/harley-davidson-profit-plummets-weak-motorcycle-sales/771003001/. They keep trying to attract younger buyers but haven't hit it so far.

In my opinion, their biggest issue is their prices. After all, an HD 48 which is a very basic bike is ~$12,000. It's kind of hard to justify a 12K toy with a McJob when paying down your student loans. Make the 48 compete in price with the Honda Rebel 500 or the S40 and they could sell as many as they can make. They tried with the Street 500/750 but, to many, those aren't real Harleys.

I believe the HD market has pretty much reached a saturation point.

I don't believe that most entry level riders can afford a new Harley, and most of the folks who can afford a Harley already have 1 or 2, and the used market is loaded (717 Harley bikes available on the Cincinnati area Craigslist).
https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/search/mca?query=Harley

The folks who want to sell their current Harley to buy a newer or different model have a lot of competition from other Harley riders selling their bikes.

I had a 05 1200 Custom, I really liked the bike. You are correct that they have become so expensive new that entry level buyers can't afford and the used market is flooded. I sold mine when I took it to a dealer and they said it was too old for them to work on.

I went to the HD dealer looking for a good pair of winter riding gloves. The lady said sure we have them and went and picked a pair off the shelf. I asked how much, she said $185.00. She got really mad as I laughed all the way out the door.

I always got the line from Harley guy's that they bought a Harley" cause they keep their value",that may have been true 15-20 years ago ,but it's a joke now, there's one for sale on every corner .
