Title: cam tensioner weirdness!
Post by zipidachimp on 10/16/17 at 20:37:46

A year ago when I bought my 2nd S40, I opened it up right away and measured the tensioner at 16 mm at 5000 kms. Last Friday, a cold day(54'F) I heard a metallic clanking coming from what appeared to be the tensioner area. Clanking went away on warm-up and stayed away.
Today, i opened it up to check tensioner
progression and was surprised to find it had REGRESSED to 15.4mm at 7000 kms!!!!!!!!!!  If the rest of my bike improves at this rate, I'll never sell! 8-)

Did you reuse the gasket? Just asking as I'll be checking the tensioner next service.

re-using the gasket has not been a problem so far. I use a light smear of gasket goo in addition. 8-)

This sure seems like a very curious case, guys.  ;)

Check your odometer.
If it's showing fewer miles, when you change the oil, dump used oil in and see if it comes out clean.

Better yet, you probably need to start off with 1/2 a tank of fuel. Check it after about 50 miles and see if the bike has self-manufactured more fuel and possibly refilled the tank up to the filler neck. You'll want to dump out that extra fuel before you drive nay further and it starts overflowing.

I dunno How you're gonna deal with tires. No telling what they will do as the miles fall away.

I'm probably gonna wonder about the accuracy of the measurements on the tensioner.

The difference can be the measurement is taken at different temps (cylinder- head expansion) or if the piston kicked back when the motor shut off ,and wasn't rotated by hand.

Hard to say, could be I spose.
Not a big difference. I was just having fun.

Ok, so I buttoned it back up, likely won't need a Versy for at least a year. This is a better bike than I thought, too bad it's now bloody cold and insurance is close to expiring. Add a tach over the winter and I'm done!
The only drawback from what I've done so far is the loud intake noise from the K&N filter.  8-)
