Title: Look out Serowbot!
Post by Dave on 10/08/17 at 18:24:01

My wife and I just locked in our flight and housing.

We are coming to Tucson to celebrate my retirement - we will arrive on November 28th and leave on October 9th.

We currently don't have our plans established on what to do while we are there - so we are open to suggestions.  We have done a little research on the hiking, museums, etc. - and if the weather is suitable we may rent a motorcycle for a day or two.

Ooopsy!

We are heading to Tucson on October 28th....coming home on November 9th.

We will have 10 full days sightseeing and relaxing - and a day on the front and back negotiating airports and the rental car desk.

It is more of a "semi-retirement" as I will be working 20 hours a week and I will have a few evenings that I need to attend.  I will have a City Council meeting on the 1st Tuesday of each month, a Planning and Zoning meeting on the 2nd Tuesday....and some months maybe a 3rd evening meeting for the Board of Adjustment or the Code Enforcement Board.  I am going to see how 8 hours on Monday, 4 hours on T/W/TH and off Friday will work.  I will also get public holidays off - and thankfully the majority of them occur on Monday and I will get an even longer weekend!  I will also get vacation days so that I can take off some entire weeks and play.

So - I am looking forward to being able to spend more time away from the office doing fun things! :)

Look Out Dave!  I may be taking a business road trip to Chicago then over to Akron in a month or so. Not sure yet if it's a solo trip or with my colleague. If solo and it's not when you're not off playing in AZ, I'm planning my route thru Wilder  8-)

Stew:

If you come up 65 or 75 - either one will get you pretty close to the Cincinnati area where I live.  Akron is about 4 hours away from where I live.

I believe the riding days may be going away pretty soon - however there has been a time or two I have ridden in November.

We have our flight, our rental car........and our house!
https://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalReview-g60950-d4218507-Guest_House_at_Desert_Moon_Retreat-Tucson_Arizona.html

Can I wear my motorcycle helmet on the plane so I don't have to put it in my luggage?

If the weather is good.......maybe this will be our rental bike!

Arriving at the destination sans underwear and toothbrush, inconvenient.
Without your riding gear!?? Tragic.

Neat looking house...
Right at the base of Mt. Lemmon!...
Yer' gonna' love that ride... Catalina hwy, 30 miles, 7,000ft climb, through 7 distinct eco systems...
(great fudge at the General Store up top,... Cookie shack has pricey but tasty pizza)...

Sonoita hwy through the grasslands and local wine country 50 miles south.  (for a longer ride, carry on to Tombstone).

You must try Mexican food here...
- Casa Molina,.. cozy, family dining, fantastic food.
- Mi Nidito, world famous
- El Guero Canelo, noisy but fun, great service
- Nico's,... local chain all over town, fast food style, cheap, tasty,... my current favourite is the beef burrito, but the red chili burro is great too... must try at least once...
Best pizza,.. Bianci's,.. (on the way to the Desert Museum,.. Grant and Silverbell... (the large will feed an army)

Try to see the
-Desert museum, stay for the raptor show if it's going. (ever have a bird of prey fly a foot over your head?)...(heading out there, take Speedway over Gates Pass, nice road, great vista at the top)...
-DeGrazia Gallery, Mexican art, famous world wide in X-mas cards...
-Like Blues?,.. Chicago bar isn't too far from your rental.
- Tombstone, old west with cowboys, shootouts, saloons, and wooden walkways...
- San Xavier Mission, church from the 1700's... (try an Indian fry bread from one of many vendors there)...
-(if you're on a bike, continue down Mission road to Green Valley, nice twisties )...

I'll add more as I think of them... you may need 2 weeks... ;D

No family out there.....and you are the only friend I got out there.

I wanted to go somewhere to celebrate the end of my current career.  There are several things on my bucket list (Route 66, Black Hills, Texas Hill Country) - but the weather in Nov/Dec didn't seem suitable for those areas.

Tucson seemed like a good place to chill out and celebrate! :)

If you get the chance to go to Prescott, go to;
Sharlot Hall Museum,  Downtown  Prescott

In the Main building, to the right, make sure you ask about the, ‘Deplorable’s’.
The info is hidden, on the backside of a another display.  But ask.

And another one.  Only about 1/2 mile away,
The Smoki Museum.
Two of the the Best in AZ.

Ask Bot, but I believe, about 3  - 3.5 hours away from Tucson.

No, I am not cancelling my trip - I will just wear a catcher cup on the flight in preparation for our arrival!  (I got on YouTube last night to look up stuff to do in Tucson, and that Family Guy video was at the top of the page).

We are really looking forward to the trip.  I looked around on Google Maps and also watched some video of the area last night.  The landscape is so much different than where I live in KY.  Tucson sure looks dry and rugged - here we have to mow the grass every 5-7 days in the summer.....it doesn't look like there is any grass in Tucson!

The Accuweather shows the daytime temps will be great - a bit too chilly overnight for me to convince my wife she needs to be on the back of a motorcycle!  Hopefully it warms up quickly and we can get on a motorcycle before noon!

Title: Re: Look out Serowbot!
Post by Serowbot on 10/11/17 at 07:57:56

Accuweather doesn't seem ...accu...
I expect warmer than that,.. and yes, this is the desert... Temps go up fast in daylight... 30 degree difference between day and night here...
Riding's good...
Must watch out for big cows though... :-?

Our flight leaves early tomorrow morning - we will be arriving at the airport around noon.

You are right Serowbot - the weather is much warmer than they predicted....80's this week, 70's next week - cloudy and a chance of rain on Sunday.

We have our helmets and gear packed, I just spoke with the AZ Motorcycle rental place and they have a bike they will rent us for a day or more - and if the BMW isn't a good fit for my wife....we can go rent a Harley Barfolunger! (I think I could keep one of those vertical if I am really careful about where/how I come to a stop).

Naw....that post ain't going anywhere....if I was bigger than 5'-7" and 170 pounds I might consider an 800 pound bike for riding double with my wife.    The fact is those big heavy bikes are comfy while moving at riding speeds - but they are really scary when you are stopped!

It is 4:15 AM and we are loading up the car so we can drive to the airport for our realllly early flight - why is it that we have to sneak out in the dark when flying to Tucson? :-?

Serowbot and GeraldHughes from this forum, and a friend of Serowbot's named George all took the wife and I for a ride up Mount Lemmon.  After the ride back down Gerald left us and the rest of us continued to Vail, then on to the US aircraft boneyard so I could see the thousands of mothballed planes!

Tomorrow we are going on a longer ride......I am really starting to like this BMW - it is really fast and really fancy.  I even  got to set the cruise control on one road to give it a try.

I have come to the conclusion that if I ever own a luxury car......it will be this motorcycle! ;)

A view from Mount Lemmon....the road we rode up on can be seen in the lower left side of the photo.

Now that this has become a group ride you'll have to send more pictures.  We also want to see some cool airplanes at the bone yard.  Have fun and keep your Savage spirit alive even if you are liking that BMW.

Not sure why the cactus posted sideways.....it was not that way when I used Tinypic to load it.

We are still out here having fun.  Sunday we went to the morning mass at Mission Xavier del Bac, then we went to Tombstone and saw the OK Corral shoot out, toured a silver mine and Boot Hill.  On Monday we went to the Kertchner Cave, then went to Nogales and drove along the border and inspected the wall.  On Tuesday we toured the Titan Missile museum and got to see it up close and personal....the lady that gave the tour was one of the people who manned one of the missiles when they were in service.......then we went up Mount Lemmen to do some hiking - but it didn't work out.  Once we started up the hill the temperature started dropping and it was 37 degrees and snowing on top!  We came back down the hill and did some hiking in Bear Canyon where it was a tolerable 59 degrees.

Post by Dave on 12/11/17 at 05:37:21

We are back home!  I stopped posting as the laptop computer was not easy to type on, and it kept turning my photos sideways.

Serowbot was just as fun in person as he is on the forum......and he took us on great rides and showed us the scenery.  Mount Lemmon provides a ride that is sort of like combining the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway - it is long, and the curves are not as tight as the Dragon but not as big/fast as the Skyway.....the scenery and views are fantastic!

Tuscon was a wonderful place to visit.  The number of museums and towns to visit is seemingly endless - we had lot of places that we just didn't have time to go see.  We visited caves, mines, Tombstone and the  Boothill Cemetery, Bisbee, Nogales, the Airplane Boneyard, Pima Air & Space Museum where they had 80 acres of airplanes, the Titan Missile Museum.

The rental BMW R1200RT was really a jewel - it was powerful and fast (125HP), smooth as silk, it has a windshield that raises and lowers at the touch of a button, electronically adjustable suspension and ride, heated front and rear seats, heated grips, cruise control, traction control, ABS brakes, radio, a display that has 2 trips meters, air temperature, fuel gauge and miles to go on remaining fuel, engine temp, altitude, mph & rpm, digital gear indicator, and a really amazing GPS system built into the dash.  The luggage is spacious and easy to operate, and it removes with just the turn of a key.  They are a bit heavy but it is still manageable at this point in my life........and they are really expensive to buy new - but it was the smoothest (both engine and ride quality) and the most comfortable motorcycle I have ever ridden.  I am going to explore the possibility of buying a used one - the prices of used ones drops drastically after the "new" purchase, and it may be possible that I could afford to buy a good used one.

Here is a photo of the first day with the bike when we rode up Mount Lemmon.  Gerald Hughes from this forum is in his Fiat, Serowbot is on the right, I am in the middle, and Serowbot's friend George is on the left.

http://i63.tinypic.com/2qbb2ww.jpg

I plan on going back to Tucson someday...and it would be a great place for a late fall/early winter group ride!
