Title: Marketplace Buyer beware!!
Post by piedmontbuckeye on 10/06/17 at 06:21:12

Over a month ago, I looked into purchasing a tire that was listed in the Marketplace section.  While I hesitated to report about this, I thought that my experience will caution others as well.  Since I have been a member here (about a year), I have maintained a high ethical practice when purchasing items.  I even sent money to a person who had given me a part for free as I was thankful for his help.  I think that when a person makes a commitment, he/she should keep it!  In a previous transaction, I had a person who promised to purchase something I had advertised, so I had it all boxed up and ready to send, and at the last minute called to tell him, he backed out of the deal!  Good thing I hadn't actually sent it!

Here is a recounting of my experience (so far) with my efforts to purchase this tire.  Thankfully I haven't sent any money (I usually trust the sellers).

So far, no luck in getting this tire, and now (because I ride my bike every day) I am getting to needing the tire as mine is getting almost bald in the middle.

pre Sep. 6 - I inquired about the tire

Sept 6 - got a msg back with price
Sept 7 - I asked about what shipping cost would be, and to verify size
Sept 7 - got answer back with pic of tire and label and note that he would
            look into shipping cost
Sept 9 - I agreed to buy tire - sent seller all my contact and shipping info
Sept 9 - Seller texted and said that he would check cost at UPS
Sept 9 - Seller though UPS was too high - would check elswhere
Sept 9 - I told seller that I wasn't in a hurry - send least expensive way
Sept 11 - I told seller to please keep me informed of progress
Sept 11 - Seller said the he thought that Fed-Ex would do better
Sept 11 - seller said he would go with Fed-Ex - wanted my approval
Sept 11 - I told him that I would send him the cost and trust him to
             send tire
Sept 11 - Seller said Fed-Ex changed their quote - seller would find
             box to ship it in.
Sept 11 - I asked seller to "keep me in the loop."
Sept 12 - I offered to send the money - price & shipping
Sept 12 - I sent seller an alternate address (business) which could
             expedite shipping
Sept 19 - hadn't heard back - asked about progress on shipping
Sept 20 - seller said that he was offshore
Sept 28 - hadn't heard anything more - asked about shipping progress
Oct. 3 - Called and left msg. and also emailed - asking about progress.

Still waiting !!!!!

UPDATE: I called again and sent msg. 10/4 or 5, and no response as of the 6th of Oct.!

Sounds fishy to me?!?!  Ruttly is a scam artist! He sold me a scuba tank, and when it arrived it was a plastic 20oz water bottle with a straw taped onto the cap.  However, to be fair it did work for 1 breath, then I had to resurface.

I hate it when you get strung along. A little communication goes a long way. Maybe the seller was in a weather/flood affected area?

Generally our Marketplace sellers/members are honest - however stuff can happen.  I bought some stuff from a member, and he disappeared off the face of the earth.  Messages on his email and cell phone were not answered, and he never again signed onto the forum.  We believe he probably had something very serious happen to him - as he was an active member prior to that date.

Thankfully I paid using PayPal, and used the "Pay for Goods" method rather than just sending it to a "friend or family" without a fee.  PayPal tried to contact him and was unsuccessful - and they refunded my money.  (Moral of the story is that although PayPal does charge a fee - sometimes it is worth it if you don't know and trust the seller).

Great message!  I had a really good laugh!!  I hope that your second part may be correct.  If so, I will still buy it, but I sure wonder about it!

I will, however, still pursue purchasing a new tire from a store.

Do people on here have a favorite source for tires?

How do you like the Shinko tires?  I am not looking for super performance, but safe & especially long-lasting!

I like them. I first tried them when I got one of my Guzzis that had them on already with good tread both F and R. I thought they were fine for handling although I can't comment on in the rain as I usually avoid that.
I then bought a set of 712s for another Guzzi and I ride that one a bit more sportingly and I was impressed. The took little weight to balance, in fact the rear took no weight at all.
I always check the rim with no tire to see where the heavy spot is and how much out of balance it is and mount the tire accordingly.
So I just got my third set now to put on the S40.
I am guessing that I will get about 6K on the rear of my 1100 Guzzis, but it is hard to say for sure.

I know you already ordered , but I usually buy my tires thru
Motorcycle Superstore.com
Seem they are always having a tire sale and great service & speedy delivery!

Last time I ordered for the Guzzi from Denniskirk.
I usually just check around who has everything I need for the best price and check coupons too for possible additional off.

I think I checked Motorcyclesuperstore and it was a bit more but not a lot.

I put a couple of 712 rear tires in my S40 and if I recall I got around 9k miles each time. They are a good tire. I am currently running the Shinko tour master tires, front and back and so far so good. I like them. They are supposed to be a bit better than the 712's and only slightly more expensive.

As of 10/11/2017 I am still waiting on some response from seller.  Maybe a hoax?

I went ahead and ordered a new Shinko from RevZilla - I think better tire, and not much more in price than this one in this thread because Revzilla has free shipping over $39.00.

I would have walked away around September 11. I REALLY would have walked away on Sept 20 - seller said that he was offshore.

My time is worth more than chasing down a sale to the point of frustration.

-----------------

I admit that I should have given up earlier, but I thought of two reasons why I didn't:

1) the price was very attractive and would have been (even with shipping costs) less than what I could get new from store.

2) I always try to help another person out who may need to sell, or have purchased something incorrectly.

I went ahead and gave up, and ordered from RevZilla - tire will be here tomorrow!

One other issue, for me that is, is that I don't do PayPal so I and seller have to negotiate how to get the payment to him/her.  I can send a check, or even cash.  The latter puts the onus on me to trust the seller to be  honest.  I have never had a problem up till this time!

The other thing we could do is to trust each other and have shipment/payment pass each other in the mail.  I know this is a big one for the seller who runs the risk of losing the item he is selling AND the cash that he would be receiving.

What I have done is to hope that people trust me.  When on the BMW website, I did this many times without even one problem.  I pride myself on my honesty and integrity.  I have done several buys here on this website.

One time I advertised for something (I now forget what it was) and one member graciously volunteered to send one to me for free!  Imagine that?

He did send it, but I responded back by sending him some cash anyway just to show him how thankful I was!

As of today (10/23/17) I have not heard a word from this person.

I think this may have been a scam - beware all of you!
