Armen is marketing a few lightened flywheels. I am going to provide the confused shipping and selling arrangements for him....at a no cost donation to the forum. The stock flywheel weighs more than 6 pounds, the new "light" one is somewhere around 2.7 pounds - the "super light" ones are around 14 ounces.

I installed one of the prototype flywheels on my bike that was about midway between the new smaller size and weighed about 3.5 pounds, and I gained 1/2 second improvement in the 0-60 mph time on my bike. I did not notice any adverse issues - the bike has plenty of mass in the crankshaft, rotor and counterbalancer. This lighter flywheel can help you get back some acceleration you might have lost when you installed taller gearing or a larger back tire.

The cost is $80, shipping in a flat rate box is currently $7.90 (cores are no longer wanted).

Send $87.90 in check or Money Order, and you will get the light flywheel ($90.00 if you use PayPal).

(NOTE: When installing the super light flywheel there is no way to torque the nut - you will need to use an impact wrench and loctite).

If you don't have the tools needed to remove the rotor and flywheel, I can rent those to you. The lighter flywheel and tools will fit in a Medium flat rate box, and the deposit on the tools is $100....the rental fee will be $20 and you need to send them back within 30 days. When the tools are returned in good condition, I will refund you $80. The increase in shipping cost from the small flat rate box is $6.45. So the cost for the lightened flywheel and tool rental is $ 187.90 ($190.00 if you use PayPal). You will receive $80 when the tools are returned to me.

This light flywheel is not going to be for everyone - it is a worthwhile improvement for those folks looking to get the most out of their bike. It helps acceleration - it really doesn't make any noticeable change at cruise. This upgrade is most easily done when you are doing other engine work - however I installed one in about an hour by leaning the bike over on the right side and only removing the left side engine cover...I didn't even have to drain the oil.

The lightened flywheel is still available. I rode all last summer with mine and I did not find any negative issues.......it makes the bike a bit quicker and did not affect the smoothness of the engine in any noticeable way.

I installed one of Armen's lightened flywheels in REX last summer.
The flywheel I received was a 4 pounder.
I really liked the effect it had on my engine.
It definitely accelerates quicker and harder.
Once I had the correct tools to remove and replace the flywheel the process went pretty well and did not take a lot of time.

I LIKE IT.

Armen is now making some "mini" flywheels for the "less is more" fellows. The stock size flywheel weighs 6 pounds....the small flywheels weigh less than a pound and have far less inertia.

DragBikeMike built and installed a small flywheel like this and had good things to say about it.

Mounting will require you to use Red locktite and an impact....there is no way to torque the flywheel nut as you cannot hold the flywheel with a tool.

Same price as the other flywheels...including the core deposit.

OK....it is a bit weird but I did a search on Google.....and found my images.

Here is a stock flywheel and a medium weight one.

This size flywheel still has the threaded holes so you can hold the flywheel to torque the nut.

These small flywheels no longer have the threaded holes, and you just need to use an impact and some thread locker on the nut.

Hi Dave, I am curious about these lightened flywheels can you tell me the biggest benefits you got and any issues that would come up, if there are any.
Also I would like to know that name of the tools needed for this job. I know I need a flywheel puller as I have to change my startor clutch at it has a small crack but I didn’t realize I need other specialty tools other then the puller.

Hey Prince,
The ultra-light flywheel weighs about 12 ounces, the stock one weighs about as much as Minnesota.
Dave did some testing early on and found a noticeable drop in 0-60 times. On the other hand, DBM noticed an increase in time in 80-100.
Lighter flywheel means it spins up faster, has more engine braking, and will make the bike slightly easier to change direction (see ‘Physics 101’).
Getting the old one off is easy if you have an impact gun and a flywheel puller. Going back on requires a holder to clamp the tiny flywheel, as the bolt holes are no more.
Dave has a rental package for the tools needed.
Not sure if he has any left. I have one ultra-light.
