Title: Bike wont run - bobber project
Post by JoophJoobie on 08/18/17 at 19:09:08

Hello everyone.  New to the savage's but I feel like ours has become part of our family from working on it so much.

We have a 2000 650 Savage that we bought used and it hasn't ran for a while.  When we bought it about a year ago, it wasn't even a complete bike.  Since purchasing, we got the bike together and got it running about 6 months ago when we experienced the typical oil plug leak.  The bike has a aftermarket cone air filter and carb (attached pictures).  Additionally, the bike had the fuel canister (which I think come stock with bikes form Cali) which we have removed.  We have since replaced the oil plug and put everything back together but now the bike will not run.

So far we have tried the following to get the bike to run:
- cleaned the carb
- changed out the fuel
- new spark plug
- checked the spark plug for good spark - it has good spark
- ensured fuel was getting into the carb
- tried taking the carb off and getting it to fire with starter fluid, which was unsuccessful
- we have power and all electrical works

It sounds like it has good compression, but I don't have the tools to test it.  I can go buy them if anyone thinks that might be the problem?  Open to any suggestions. Thanks everyone.

What happens when you try to start it? Any sounds? Clicking? Whirring? Does the engine try to crank etc?

I don't have the experience to help, but I can guarantee that is going to be the next question the experienced guys will ask [ch128521]

How many miles?
How old is the gas?
What is the battery voltage
While the starter is running?
Rare to see compression problem.

WE need more info ,Location or elevation and carb jet sizes, stock or aftermarket ,exhaust, petcock ? how long has it been setting since it ran last?what did you do to vent the gas tank and did you plug the  carb fitting for the return line, when you removed the charcoal canister?and the info asked for , Are the valves properly adjusted after replacing the head plug?

We live in Hawaii. I attached pictures of the carb and petcock. It's been sitting for around 6 months. When starting its goess "wwrr thump, wrrr thump, wrrr thump"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk2_hMeDO2U <- sounds like this guys bike.

We've removed the spark plug and let the engine air out to dissipate the gas.

There's supposed to be a tube that connects from the petcock to the carb but there isn't an open port for it on our carb, so the tube isn't connected to anything.

We didn't adjust the valves during or after the head plug leak. Not sure how to do that.

Theres about 11,000 miles on the bike.

well, that's your problem right there.
you got the vac port connected to the carbon canister port.
the one on the right goes to the petcock
plug the little one on the left.

also, verify the pod filter doesn't close off the port at the top of the intake.
looks to me it does.

I'd bet dollars to donuts the battery is low or dead meat.
Check the water, test voltage under load.

Ignition won't fire the plug if it's low.

Boom!! It fired right up. Man thank you so much. It runs even better than when we first got it.

You should also plug the vent line where it ran from the gas tank ,to the charcoal canister ,to prevent fuel from leaking if the tank is really full.
