Well, I went for a ride on the Savage, and then I wrote it up!

Congratulations on getting your article published.  Is this your first or have you written articles for publication before this?

Great story !
It's not how fast you get there or back home , its the Journey !
Same as my RYCA donor bike.

Great story, nice adventure, and a cool memory.

The Savage is a budget bike, and a few changes can improve the ride and handling of the bike, and should be made if you continue touring on it.  Better/taller rear shocks help the ride and handling considerably, the 25 tooth Kawasaki front pulley helps the bike maintain highway speeds more comfortably.

Sure you can find better touring bikes - but for a lot of us the Savage is "good enough".

I've been writing for motomags for years, particularly CMG. I've been in ROADRUNNER, ADVMoto (where I got my start) and that custom mag Barnetts used to sell as well.

If I keep the bike long term, I'll look into better shocks for sure. I like the gearing on the bike, but I'd probably mess around with it for fun, just to see the difference. I like my low-end torque. I'm used to riding big single dual sport bikes.

+1 on the positive comments....good write-up!

I bought my S40 to "get back to basics," after many larger/faster/smoother...& complicated...motorcycles, and it fills  that bill nicely.

What's your favorite, budget minded one?

Best duallie for the money IMHO is the DR650. Can do it all, and out of the box needs nothing but some loctite or wire on the Neutral Sending Unit.

KLR is big/heavy, but usually available cheap. XR650 is nimble and light but more pricey and they burn oil. Older DR350s are great but also burn oil. DRZ400 is too pricy for what you get.

Thanks, that has a lot of reading that goes with it. The SE sounds like the twisties riders approach. I'm a short guy and the tippy toes at the stop sign makes me uncomfortable..

Have you spent time on the Kawasaki 250 and 300?

I'd buy a KLX250 if I was interested in engine mods on a bike, you can do a lot with them.

The 300 is cool, but lacks suspension travel. The guys at Motorcyclist really liked it, though.

DR650 can be lowered with factory parts it comes with!
