In the spirit of answer 'a', here is the progress on my motor stand:
A bit of machining, cutting and welding.
Bored out some round stock. Made one piece sleeve into the other. Welded some 1/2"x1" flat stock onto the outer piece, drilled and tapped the flat stock 10x1.5 for Allen bolts. Stood up the round stock in the band saw and cut a slot in it to allow the outer tube to collapse when the Allens are tightened. Motor can spin in the holder, pinch bolts will hold in any position. If it won't hold, I'll drill holes in the round stock in vertical and horizontal positions so I can put a bolt through the whole mess.
Made a few patterns from a piece of used file folder. Cut 1/4" steel flat stock
and made mounts for the rear two engine mount holes.
Welded the round stock to a piece of heavy wall 2x4" steel tube.
Next step is to make a base to weld the vertical arm to.
Maybe next year I'll round up a good used late model 5 speed motor and start building a heavy breathing Savage...

Can it hold just half while you load crank & trans in ?
When I built my engine I had no time to build a stand.
I used 2 blocks of some hardwood just a tad smaller than a 2x4.
Years ago I made brackets to hold my SR500 engine to a automotive type engine stand that worked great.

Hey Ruttly,
I thought about how to make it so I could build 1/2 at a time. I'd want to support he motor at both ends, and this only holds it t one. Easier to load the complete motor in this way. So, not easy to make a motor stand that does both. i'm sure when I'm all done, I'll think of a way I could have done it ::)
Might make a simple cradle to lay one 1/2 of the crankcase in to allow me to build up the bottom end. Shouldn't be to big of a deal.
Next step is to make up the frame for the base, then a bit of rattle can to keep the rust at bay.
Gathering up goodies for a hotrod motor. Have a 695 top end, will eventually take the spare head to the local head guy, etc.
If you sit around, you just get moldy ;)

Was thinking of doing that, making an adapter for an engine stand.
Then I thought that dam thing would be taking up space, and now that it had a spot to sit in how long it would take...
not take... how long a project could sit waiting to get done.

Also, I would wanna split the case and would need provisions for that.
Then dealing with it probably not being balanced and flipping over, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Yeah my buddies made fun of it. A engine stand for a big V8 with a tiny thumper motor on it.

Yeah, but it makes life easier. Smartest one I made holds and Airhead BMW motor. Has wheels and I can roll it onto the bike lift. Brings the motor to the same height as it would be in the bike frame on the lift.
The advantage of this one is that I can make brackets for other motors and use the same base.
Working on ideas for a lay down stand that holds one case half and allows me to build the bottom end.
