Title: Idle mix and screw
Post by Steve H on 04/14/17 at 19:00:38

I am sure this has been covered but a quick look didn't find it.

Is the idle mix screw and air volume adjustment or fuel volume adjustment?

Also, my idle screw seems to have no effect on engine running except for starting from all the way in to loose enough to fall out...which it did the other day. (I found it and cleaned and replaced it. O-ring and spring are still there) I find that out about 2.5 turns is where the bike seems to like it best.  It starts really well there. More in and it wants to kick back when starting.

Near as I can remember, my jets are what's listed as factory for an '86.

Thanks,

I believe it's an air adjustment.

The idle adjustment is a fuel adjustment screw.

It is best to adjust the mixture when the engine is set to idle very slowly.
adjust for the fastest idle under these conditions. Then after the best idle is obtained readjust the idle speed up to the recommended idle speed of 1100rpm. If you try to adjust the mixture at the normal idle speed it doesn't work very well because the engine is not really "on" the  pilot jet.

What happens when you turn the screw out?

Steve,"2 1/2 turns out the bike starts really well " If that means it starts without the choke ,when cold, that isn't really the best setting. You should get the bike warmed up first ,slow the idle to about 800 rpm so you can hear it speed up or slow down and set it to it's highest idle . then set your idle back up.

The air/fuel mixture gets richer... I hope that answers your question.
