Title: 86 Savage Mikuni VM36 Swap
Post by MachoManRandy on 03/21/17 at 14:32:40

I've read several threads on carb swaps here and the Mikuni VM/TM36 seems to be the preferred swap for a stock savage. It's been 10 years since I last worked on a bike. Lancer seemed to know a bit about what was needed on these but did not specify what those things were.

I know I need a new throttle cable, but what else do I need to swap from the stock 86 carb to the Mikuni VM36?

MachoMan,

Lancer has a kit that has every part included for a seamless change over to the VM36, including the throttle cable.

Go for it , you will love it ! Lancer will not disappoint you and can answer all your questions !

A superior & simpler carb by far than the stock carb

Get a raptor petcock while your at it , think he can get you one too !

I bought my kit from Lancer.  If you buy a VM36 elsewhere - you can't be sure the jetting and slide will be correct for a 4 stroke motor.....the parts installed in the Mikuni carb for 2 stroke or snowmobile engines is very different from what is needed for the Savage - and the slide comes  with  different cutaways for 2/4 stroke motors and they are very expensive to buy individually.  You will also need the rubber cylinder adapter, a throttle cable that has to be made specifically for the Savage throttle grip and the VM carb.....and Lancer sends it to you with the jets needed to make it run correctly.

The only thing that you will need to do on your own is figure out what to do with an air filter - I don't believe the stock rubber boot between the air cleaner and stock carb fits the Mikuni. (I could be wrong).

This is a fantastic forum. Thanks for the quick email response Lancer! Seems you're definitely the authority on this conversion. This actually seems like a fairly easy swap compared to others I've worked on.

Thanks for the Raptor reference Ruttly, I installed it last week ;D

Won't be long until Randy is on the road. Just in time for....rain.
