Title: Saddle bag installation
Post by T140V on 02/18/17 at 03:01:34

I found some saddle bags on auction for $50.00.  I wanted to mount them low and out of the way so if anyone is interested I started by relocating the tail lights. I had some  7/8" OD 3/4" ID aluminum  tubing the tail lights would fit inside. I drilled holes in the tubing in order to hold the taillight in and holes that lined up with the rear reflector mount. Then I polished the tubing to give it a finished look.

After polishing all done with the lights. I did have to extend the wires using solder and heat shrink tubing

Next I made the mounts for the saddlebags . I used 5/8 inch steel rod to make an insert where the lights used to be.

I cut the rod with a hacksaw to fit in the hole. I drilled it out on the bottom side and tapped the hole to 1/4" X 20  so I could bolt it on.

Then I drilled the center out and tapped it to fit some screws I had in the garage.

Next I used 1/4" X 1" aluminum flat bar with washers behind it to space it out from the chrome fender covers (so the chrome wouldn't get scratched).

I drilled some holes in the flatbar and cut the saddle bags to the length I thought looked good and used threaded rivets to hold them on.

I might mention the offset of the pulley tends to hold one saddle bag out to side more than the other. Nature of the beast.

Next I rounded the edges with a sander and polished them up. This is how they turned out. It wasn't real complicated and I like the look. I hope this will give somebody an idea who can't make a decision on what to do about their bags.  :D

T140,

Good Job!

Do you recall what size the aluminum tubing is?

They came up looking great!

I found some square section aluminium which the turn signal mount fitted into (with one washer to snug it up).  Mounting to the licence plate bracket tilted them up a bit, which bothered me at first, but hey, at least they point straight at the driver behind me ;)

BTW, the side mounted screws on my signals are long enough to go through the fender rails, which is much thicker than the aluminium section. I managed to pinch the wire which caused some really bizarre effects with the signals - took me ages to troubleshoot it because I thought the holes in the signal housing were blunt ends. I didn't realise they go all the way through  :-/

Nice Island Road, I keep forgetting to measure the tubing for everyone. The nice thing about showing what we have done is it gives everyone ideas for their own customizing. 8-)
