Title: Dual pancake air filter setup!
Post by Graven754 on 12/07/16 at 07:35:52

So I just got done throwing this together the other day. Tool from the mighty verslagen's words and made sure to keep to stock air duct coming from the carb to ensure optimum straight airflow. Put together with pvc and rubber connectors.  Filters are hand piled with k&n oil, (not spray)  and ready to roll.  Only issue is now I need to reset and km completely new to this.
Anybody able to tell me how/ what type of jet I need to do.  What all do I need to do to make my bike run as best it can with this setup.

The only other time I've seen the dual air filter setup put together is by deleting the rubber duct that is necessary for best performance so I'm hoping I have made the best air flow setup for the savage. In sure it needs some tweaking and I'd love some input.  And ofcourse km gonna paint the pipes black ;p

Graven,

Lancer can probably get you in the ball park with the jetting that you need.

A lot of us are going to be curious about how the dual filters work out for you. Keep the information and pictures coming.

Looks like a clean straight forward installation.
How does it run ?.

Well sort of a long story. I thought my fuel and air mixture screw needed adjustment because she wouldn't cranky turned out my battery just didn't have enough juice.  So now my mixture is screwy and until the rain stop so I can roll it out of my garage for adjustments I'm dead in the water.  She'll crank then die right after.

Also what's a good thing for me to keep handy incase I get into some rain. If it's heavy I'll pull over but if I have to ride in some lite rain what do I cover the filters with?

Graven,

Lancer can probably answer your question.

I am thinking that a piece of sheet meatal to cover the front and top of the air filters would do the job.

Look at the older Sporsters bell shaped cover over the air filter, may be another way to do it. I rode Sporsters in the rain and never had any trouble with water getting into the carburetor.

Mine are a little larger and I don't have an issue with light rain.
But they are foam and if yours are K&N then I would not worry about it.
The oil should repel the water.
Even then, a little moisture won't hurt it, just don't put it away wet.

I would bring the outside even with the frame, then you might not have any issue with it.  but a HD-isk bell cover should do the trick.  But they're under your legs so they don't get to wet anyway.

I was going to say the same basic thing that Verslagen did.

I suppose the 2 90° bends aren't helping anything but this engine should breathe ok with twice the filter capacity.

Very cool , I like it !

Got any side pics with seat on ?

Also, verslagen,  they are not k&n's.  They are exact replicas of them by Ryca the ones they sell for the cafe racer mod. I did use k&n oil to oil them with.

Here is a link to the Tech Section....go to the Carbs and Jetting section, and there are several threads on jetting.

The trickiest part of playing around in the carb is the tiny two screws down inside. Strip those and getting to them to fix the boo boo is gonna require magic.
Sadly, Harbor Freight no longer sells the handheld impact with the long skinny screwdriver tip that just fits the dang things great.

Time spent on getting the right fit beats time spent trying to unscrew a screwup.

Justin,

You are absolutely right about those 2 little screws.

I am still using my trust half century old KD Manufacturing 3/8" drive impact driver. I use an adapter to get the small Phillips bit, that I have reground, to rap those buggers loose. The Phillips bit is one of the typical hex shaped bits and it is long enough to reach.

The picture attached does not show the reground Phillips bit as I have misplaced the bit..

I hold the carburetor in my 40 year old Black & Decker Work Mate.

I have found that the American made hard, zinc plated Phillips head screws from ACE Hardware work well. The reason I haven't used SS Allen head screws inside the carburetor is the Allen wrench is so tiny I am afraid of stripping out the head of the screw if it gets stubborn.

Never-Seize is your friend.

If I was opening the bowl of a several years old carburetor and I didn't HAVE to do it Now, I'd dose the bolts with penetrating oil every day for a few days first. I never got my pilot jet out. One side broke off... I decided to run it. It worked out okay.
Pay attention to which side the dimple faces on the plate under the two tiny screws.

Justin,

If the jets appear to be tight holding a hot soldering iron them will usually help break them loose. I found a new penetrating oil spray that may help too.

I wish I would have had a can of it when I broke a piece off of the timing cover.

In need of a penetrating oil?  .... Try Kroil. It allowed me to totally disassemble a 1950 front axle assembly buy using only a wrench. I sprayed all the bolts every day or so for a couple of weeks. There was a couple of stubborn bolts that took a few days longer. .... I had to order the Kroil off of the net but it is good stuff. I highly recommend it.

Kroil is good stuff.

It is especially good for cleaning gunk out of gun barrels.

Somebody help me here... 1/2 transmission fluid, 1/2...acetone??? works as a great pen oil.

Title: Re: Dual pancake air filter setup!
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/11/16 at 11:06:16

I get Kroil and PB Blaster at the industrial bearing supply.
The acetone/ transmission fluid 50/50 mix is a great tool.
PB is cheap.
Kroil spray is about $15.00
The can of Kroil liquid leaked.
Acetone evaporates,
Wintergreen oil was mentioned here by a guy who had been a machinist on a submarine. I think it's good. I tried it.

Thanks JOG. Acetone sounded right but I was uncertain at the time.

I got the bike cranked the other day.  Needed to buy a battery chsrger/maintainer due to the weather.  Cranked her up and I couldn't get her tuned right.  Did some research and I think I'm actually giving it too much fuel. The last owner may have actually rejetted it when installing the Jardine slip on.  I didn't think they did but it's definitely possible. I'll check back in later with my results.

Can't expect her to run right.
She's been croaked and rejected.
Poor thing!
