Post by nerdsports on 11/26/16 at 16:07:47

Thanks guys!!

So details...
1979 Honda CM400t tank with an aluminum cap
Champion fiberglass tank
Custom subframe (bolts on)
Custom made foot controls using some of the savage stuff
Engine is unfortunately stock. Just Uni pod filter and a custom made exhaust with a crappy "hot dog" muffler (it's loud)
Battery box is under the seat with the CDI hanging underneath it
The seat was custom made for the Champion tail

I have pics of the build I can post as well.

I appreciate your detailed criticism but the tires actually mount differently depending on front or rear.  ;)

It attaches in the front with two M6 bolts and to the rear using two M8 bolts under the frame tubes where the fender attached to.

Here are the foot controls. The shifter and brake pedals are off the factory forward controls. I also cut off the pivots and welded them to the backside of the plate.

No RYCA parts on here (they are so overpriced). I made them myself using some of the stock Savage forward control parts.

The handlebars were listed as 82 Ironhead bars. I was going to post more build thread pics but realized I didnt stop to take THAT many pictures during the process. Here are some...

If you look at motorcycle tires and think of the way that directional car tires work...they do look backwards.  Car tires have diagonal grooves to help push the rain outward as the tire rolls forward - motorcycle tires aren't designed to do that, as the tire cross section is rounded and the water can just squirt out regardless of the orientation of the grooves.

The back tire grooves are designed so that when the bike is leaned over and accelerating - the stress is aligned along the long part of the tread pattern.....and this helps reinforce the tread and keep it stable.  The front tire is designed the other way....so that when you are leaned over and braking.....the stress is aligned along the long part of the tread.  So....when mounted properly the rear tire grooves will run in the direction that you are used to seeing on cars - and the front tire will look like it is mounted backwards.

I wanted to go further forward but I dislike things hanging under the frame rails. I was going to copy the peg setup from an RD350/400 that goes under the frame across to either side...

The linkage was cut and lengthened 1/4 to 1/2".

Title: Re: My version of a flat/dirt/street tracker Savag

Thanks.  I have set of XS400 pegs I plan on using.
http://https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0709/8407/products/5058_large.jpg?v=1429313374

I'm keeping the low pipe so I can't go under the frame anyway.  I'll hang them off a bracket like you used.  That will get the pegs forward but my linkages and levers will likely be a bit more complicated.  Your setup looks almost fool proof.

Your build is very nice. You pulled it together perfectly without much "fabrication fuss".  Simple and elegant in a way.  Odd choice of words for a tracker project but it's really well put together.

Post by ohiomoto on 12/14/16 at 06:51:15

Oh yeah, how much trouble was the CM400 tank?  They look pretty roomy underneath.   Enough room to keep the stock decompression solenoid and coil?

I was looking at a few on eBay but I wondered if the tunnel was too shallow but your's sits down perfectly.

Guys, I appreciate the continued kind words. Unfortunately I did not take many photos of the foot peg assembly build. As a matter of fact, I think I only took a picture of the final product.

I'm not sure if Photobucket allowed embedded image access again or not but for those on Chrome, you can download an extension to fix that issue.

I'm not sure why it hasn't sold honestly. It's a real bummer considering how nice the bike looks. I've had plenty of people give me the whole "if i had $xxxx I'd totally buy it" but no one has offered me anything worthwhile. And I've had others lowball me because a Savage "isn't worth that much." .... Despite all the work it has.

Mid-late summer is a pretty hard time to sell.  Folks that can and want to buy have usually already done so.  The best time is Feb. to May to sell and get the most $$ for a bike.
Late summer to mid winter is the best time to buy at low prices.

It's been for sale through all the scenarios you described. I guess people just don't care for the Savage platform? Or maybe it's the flat track look?

Title: Re: My version of a flat/dirt/street tracker Savag
Post by Dave on 07/04/18 at 04:34:56

The market for "custom" bikes like your Street Tracker is unfortunately very small.  Most folks who want a bike like this also want to be the one who created it and want to build it "their way".

The bike looks great - but speaking from experience with my Cafe', the bike has a limited use and would restrict my daily riding if it was the only bike I owned (no storage space, no wind protection....horrible to ride in the rain).........it is a bike that is best ridden on dry, sunny days.  I love riding mine - but I choose days where there is little chance of me getting wet.  Most folks want a motorcycle that is more user friendly.

(I also believe that a better headlight, turn signals and brake light and mirrors would be needed if I were going to ride this bike in traffic or after dark).

Without meaning to pile on,the bane of all builders: if you build to fulfil your vision of a bike, YOU are the buyer. If you build to the market's vision, the market will buy. Cheers! 8-)

The statement" If you build it they well come " is only true in the movies. You never  get the money you put into a custom ,If you build the bike ,it had better be to your own taste and for your own use. It's really only worth what the blue book is for that year. You may get lucky and find someone easy, that will meet your price ,but it will take a lot of time.( Maybe forever).

And yet there are companies out there building customs all the time.  This isn't the first bike nerdsports has built and sold.

I think it will sell to someone who is thinking about building a Ryca and realizes that it will cheaper and easier to buy this.  It's the perfect commuter/bar hopper bike as is.  Just throw a mirror on it and go.  I've put close to 10k miles on my bike the past 2 summers strictly commuting. There is some hipster out there that want's this bike.

Excellent build.

Remember, you sell emotions as much as a motorcycle; people do not buy with their brains, even when they think they are. Colour, stance, engine - so many things go into the decision making also on a sub-conscious level.

What can a seller do? Using words in the ad to evoke emotions, something that will allow a potential buyer see him or herself riding the thing and having fun while also getting cred. Perhaps a video with the sand roosting from the rear wheel on a gravel road. A wheelie. Anything that reeks of performance and joy.

Think what would a person looking for their first car get excited about? The extra leg room and luggage space? A fullsize spare wheel? The headlamp washers? The service intervals of the engine? Or would it be cool rims, the sound as the engine is revved, the colour and the sunroof? The practical buyer has a grumpy wife and 3 screaming kids. The practical buyer will not consider a street tracker. An emotional buyer will IMO. And he or she will not be interested in wheel sizes or powder coating, but whether or not it is cool.

Boy, am I great at repeating myself  :-/ ;) ;D

Thanks man! That's exactly who I'm targeting. I'm going to get a friend to get some good photos of it and some video and it's going on ebay so a bigger audience has access to it. Selling it in Miami and Tampa hasn't panned out because the markets don't know a lick about flat track motorcycles.

Faffi, you hit the nail on the head. I spoke to a friend and I decided that really cool, hip photos in cool places (bars, dirt roads, etc) will help sell it. It's funny you mention sand roosting because I really want to rip into this thing and catch some video.
