Title: Versy's Valve Adjustment Tool Post by verslagen1 on 10/21/16 at 22:39:28 This is the doohickie that I use to adjust my valves. http://www.savageriders.com/verslagen/ValveAdj/vvat-top%20view.jpg http://www.savageriders.com/verslagen/ValveAdj/vvat-side%20view.jpg Take a fender washer with a 1/4" hole in and press a screwdriver bit in it. I scribed 2 sets of lines 90° apart then put notches in the sides cause when it's dark you can't see the lines. 90° turns out to be about .006" so make a few adjustments with it and scribe off your favorite gap. To use: loosen the locknut with a wrench, you can leave it in place. put the screwdriver bit in the slot and run the adjustment screw down to the valve. eyeball a scribe line with a convenient feature then turn the tool to your favorite adjustment point. |

Title: Re: Versy's Valve Adjustment Tool Post by verslagen1 on 10/22/16 at 08:38:52 You can see the screwdriver bit is a special one with a large head. It came in a kit with a ratchet driver that I got a long time ago. I've been thinking of replacing the fender washer with a purpose built disk that is larger. Big enough so it clears the frame so turning it is easier. |

Title: Re: Versy's Valve Adjustment Tool Post by Kenny G on 10/22/16 at 10:43:01 Verslagen, I have a complete set of Brownell's gunsmithing screwdriver bits. I will choose a bit that fits snugly and go from there. The bit that you are using now looks like it came from a Chapman's set. Kenny G |

I'm a bit confused. While I understand the concept, I don't understand the 90 and 6 thing. Are you saying 90 degree of turn is about .006" in gap? Main main aggravation with valves is that the adjustment screw moves when you tighten the nut. I need to make one of them other dohickey things (tappet wrench).. or find one that actually fits and works on the LS650.. in the frame. |
Title: Re: Versy's Valve Adjustment Tool Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/25/16 at 03:22:19 I bought two bent screwdriver. Philips on one end, flat on the other. Used a grinder to shape the Philips ends into flat blades , aimed different directions. I can hold the adjustment as I tighten the jam nut. If the adjuster threads aren't close fitting that will open the adjustment up a hair. |

You're right... my bad... fixed, should be 90° is about .006" With this doohickie, you can hold the adjustment screw in position while you lock the nut down. and I just use a standard craftsman combo wrench. |
Title: Re: Versy's Valve Adjustment Tool Post by Armen on 10/26/16 at 17:13:59 Youzguyz- To translate Verslagen's very clever method: Thread pitch of the valve adjuster is .75mm Meaning one full turn is .75mm 1/4 turn would be .1875mm .1875 divided by 25.4 equals .00738" The #2 and 3 exhaust valves on single cam CB750 Hondas are a real PITA to get to. We used to use this kind of technique on those bikes. |
