Title: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Chris H. on 10/16/16 at 17:36:43

Well, the parts should be arriving on Thursday for my bike. Can't wait to start working on it. It's just been sitting there looking sad and naked.

Ya, I can already tell I'm gonna need to figure some things out. For example: the speedo, not sure what I'm going to do about that at this point.

Doesn't Ryca kit come with speedo & cable ? If not they sell them !

I opted out of it, I was hoping to somehow re-use my stock one, so I could keep the odometer and built in dummy lights.

Make sure you get sleep before it shows up. Then take the next couple of nights off and build! oh and take lots of build pics ;D

UPS truck showed up at 8:15pm, so all I got to do was unwrap everything and test fit the tank before I had to get ready for work. I was super impressed with the packaging by Ryca. Every component was bubble wrapped individually and packed well with peanuts.

Left work early and made some progress on the bike. Tank, hardtail, fake oil can, and seat brackets all mounted up.

I think tomorrow I'll do the front end lowering. Just need to run out for some ATF.

Current dilemma: can't get the bolts out of the bottom of the fork tubes... they're in there good!

Bars are on though!

Can't turn them or do they turn w/out loosening?

Just can't turn it. I've got the tool holding it in place sturdy, just can't get the bolt to loosen. I may got get a long allen socket so I can use my impact. Happen to know what size that bottom bolt is?

Current state:

7mm, I wouldn't use a long one, they tend to break.

itsa SOB, I knew I was just barely able to get it broken loose.
I know they apply their version of loctite to just about everything.
So maybe heat applied directly to the head of the bolt would help.
I would use a flame cause of the enclosed area.
But a soldering iron... a big one.

I warmed up bolt with my crack torch , then used a small box wrench over Allen wrench for more leverage while sitting on fork leg , SOB

Post by Chris H. on 10/21/16 at 13:26:46

Went and bought a long 3/8 drive 8mm. Impact wrench took care of it. I'm cruising right along with the build. I guess I need to start thinking about what color I'm going to have the tank/fender powder coated.

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Chris H. on 10/21/16 at 22:29:24

Ya, I spent a solid 12 hours working on it. I was hoping to re-use the factory speedo, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to. Not looking forward to trying to tuck all the wiring for the handlebars. I need to yank the tank and fender off and take them to the powder coater. I'm thinking silver or grey.

I neatly zip tied the wires to the bars , much better than them blowing in the wind.
It's lookin good !

Ya, I don't know how I'm gonna get them from the "oil can" to the bars though. Try and hide them under the tank?

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Ruttly on 10/22/16 at 17:05:14

Yeah not much room to hide it. It's so bare. Are you altering the wiring at all ?

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Chris H. on 10/22/16 at 17:19:57

No. As of now I'm not using turn signals, but I'm keeping the wires in case I change my mind.

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Ruttly on 10/22/16 at 18:18:20

Ok , but I think in tech section there is a stripped down wiring diagram with no turn signals and bare essentials removing decomp selenoid and relay. Helps to thin out the harnesses and removing failure prone parts

I'll check it out, thanks. I got rid of the decomp solenoid, I'll be using the thumb lever.

It's easy to get rid of decomp relay a simple bypass

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Chris H. on 10/23/16 at 21:40:01

Chain conversion is on, carb is re-jetted, and pulled off the sheet-metal for powder coat. I think I'm gonna do silver or grey.

Post by Chris H. on 10/26/16 at 16:50:51

So, she's just about done. Just waiting on a speedo to come in. Took it for a quick ride up to get gas, it's a blast! The powder coat turned out great, and you definitely can't beat the price.

Ya, my wife wasn't too happy that I was in the garage so much. It helped that I tore down and prepped the bike while I was waiting for the parts.

If you don't like the loud muffler.....RYCA makes this insert to cut down on the noise.

So with the manual decomp lever, I need to bypass the clutch safety switch. This means it's critical I know when the bike is in neutral. Because the neutral light is in the factory gauge cluster I'm planning on wiring up a light. There aren't many places to put it, so I'm thinking about drilling into the top triple tree.

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Ruttly on 10/30/16 at 13:28:11

Chris, There is a Nuetral safety bypass you should do.
Go to Rycas website , at the very bottom of home page click on "resources" scroll down & click on "clutch mod wiring"

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Chris H. on 10/30/16 at 16:08:04

I did see that, either way I want the neutral light.

Title: Re: Ryca Bobber Project
Post by Ruttly on 10/30/16 at 16:35:23

All the way to the bottom of first page , resources
Mod only allows start in neutral only , so you won't accidentally start in gear while your left hand is working the decomp lever
