Title: GET TO DA CHOPPA
Post by Rayven on 09/28/16 at 12:07:47

Hey all! It's been some time since I've been on here and thought I would share the progress on my little savage chopper project.

During the tear down, I had the idea of installing some mini apes but overall decided against it...for now...(PS not sure why some of these pictures are in that position, no matter how many times I rotate it I can't get it straight up and down, sorry)

Welded on this awesome little ring for the top mount for my new p-nut tank, that I can also run my wires through. (With the perfect amount of clearance, even though it looks super close)

Cut a mount for the bottom mount for the tank and welded on

Made and welded on a solo seat bracket for an old solo Harley seat I got off of craigslist for $30. On the top photo if you look down between the air box and the seat mount you can see the spot I made for the rectifier.

I had originally bought a trailer fender to use, however my buddy who was helping with the welding had a Harley fender given to him that he wasn't going to use so he passed it onto me. We had to trim it a length wise a bit, but it fit perfect and we drilled some holes through the swing arm to mount it. The solenoid will now be mounted on the original tank bottom mount, who knew if would fit perfectly there!

Bent up some metal for the sissy bar, mounted to both the swing arm and fender.

Sissy bar final outcome (minus some paint, tail light, license plate and turn signals)

And finally how she sits now...I just need to put a few things on, finish up some painting and hook up the electrical. The plan is to have her riding by the weekend!

Cool! The back mudguard looks killer. Looks like it fits really nicely. I'm not a sissy bar guy, but to each their own. Nice of you to include the customary "hipster with grinder" shot (meant in the nicest possible way  ;) ). Good luck for the weekend, have a great ride!

Looks great so far! Remember to give us some final pics!

BTW, I love the Arnold reference!  ;D

You probably fired your daddy years ago,
But
The front pulley, where the belt engages it, will simply masticate anything that get in the pinch point.
Looks great, just can't see no front fender.

I've never had a problem with the pulley. Is there any record of a forum member getting caught in the pulley?

Hopefully by this weekend I'll have some photos of her all put together! However there is always the chance there will be more things changed down the road ::)

Funny, my daddy actually lost a few pant legs on his Harley that way...but I bought it without one and thanks to my not so loose pants I haven't had any issue  ;)
Knock on wood of course

Looks nice, I still don't get the peanut tank though, I'm tired of 100 miles per tank, peanut will probably only get you like 75  :(  Great look though,  good pics, all in all, would you say it was what you wanted?

It's totally what I wanted! Finding a good way to route the electrical is driving me nuts but it's coming together! I'd really like to get another smaller triangle headlight to mount on top of the current triangle, and I have dreams of a springer front end...but we will see!

I have trip scheduled later in October for Babes Ride Out, so fingers crossed she'll do well! I'll be riding from Broomfield Colorado to Joshua Tree California...that's when the real comfort of everything will be really tested!!

I don't expect anyone to shove a toe in, but if you fall and wind up on or under the bike, whatever gets in the pinch point is getting mangled.

On my Cafe' conversion - my feet are right up against the pulley cover, and I did have my shoe lace blow through the little slotted holes and get caught in the pulley - it yanked my shoe lace and just pulled it in two.

On the stock bike your feet/pants are forward when riding - so likely your pants are not near the pulley when things are moving.

I had a circle burned on parts of a shirt.
It was from landing on the front wheel, in the ditch.
Many people have ridden without the guard.
Nobody has been hurt.
I think it's a bad idea to not have something that stops things from getting in the pinch point. Just a good wire.

kind of like those naked rear tireS that would grind your tail off if you ever had a mishap and landed on it !     YAPPS !
You never know who or what is going to pull out in front of ya .  :o

If I were that worried about it I'd quit riding motorbikes. But to each their own.

Thanks! Out here in Colorado riding season could be over today, or go on all winter...if you don't like the weather here just wait 5 minutes lol.
The bike is 99% done now, I'll post pictures in a little bit!

Last time I was out there we were in shorts in 90° heat. That afternoon we went to 11,000 ft. and played in ~2 ft. snow. I love Colorado!

I am so in love! She is so much more comfortable for me now. I have really long legs and now that the seat is mounted further back and the new handlebars are angled a little differently my knees won't hit my elbows!

Congratulations on your new baby  ,

ya going to name it  ?

I might have to hunt-up a muffler like that for mine.  :)

FYI: The bike looks even better than the picture show.

Title: Re: GET TO DA CHOPPA
Post by Rayven on 10/19/16 at 11:30:42

Thanks everyone!

I want to name her but I haven't thought of anything that fits just yet...The tank is flat black and I plan to paint a little mountain scene with wolves running in gloss black so it is very subtle. It'll be an ode to my grandmother who recently passed away who absolutely adored wolves.

The muffler I bought from a local shop called 2 Wheelers for pretty cheap. I think they have a few more shops around the US.

OI I'm so glad you liked it, I thought for sure when you saw it in person you would think it looked silly ;)

Blade,

Good suggestions...
I had been toying with Lobo, but Luna is reserved for something else in my life  ;)

I will post photos from my Babes Ride Out trip shortly!

The guys here where asking how you were doing. How did you get home from California ????

This trip was from Denver, CO to Joshua Tree,CA. As some of you know, I broke down and met up with old.indian in New Mexico, got her running again and then died again in Kingman, AZ. After some fideling with the carb we got her running again. Here are a handful of photos from the trip!

The test ride after getting the carb cleaned and put back together. SUCCESS!

Riding out with the Colorado ladies from Kingman, AZ towards Joshua Tree, CA (I'm the one in the front on the left of the photo)

Once we got to Joshua Tree we set up camp and partied. The next day we rode to The Salton Sea and Salvation Mountain (it was 102 degrees that day).

Stopped at a bar on the way back to camp that had a hair salon museum next to it. (I'm in the black helmet)

The next day we explored Joshua Tree National Park. (Had to rock the Colorado flag the entire trip of course)

Oh we stayed at the Wigwam on the way back to Colorado.

Ha! Well, the girls with the trailer were heading to LA before going back to Colorado. So I let them take the ol' Savage with them so I wouldn't risk holding up the group on the way back to home and getting stranded. So I rode on the back of one of the girls Road Glide's to about Santa Fe, when I got a call from the girls with the trailer saying they had decided to skip LA. So I hopped off the Road Glide in Santa Fe and met up with the girls with the trailer and hitched a ride back home with them.

Upon unloading the bike at home I also found a giant gash in my front tire. It would appear I ran over something sharp, hot and metal at some point. SO probably a good idea I didn't risk riding home or I could have blown a tire!

Thanks again for all of your help!

Things turn out for the best. Losing a front tire is not an experience you want to have.   It sounds like you enjoyed yourself despite the mechanical glitches. Sometimes the best memories are the ones that have a couple of "AW Rats!" involved.  "
Naomi sounds like a good wrench to have along with you on a ride.. I like the head lamp shot. 8-)

Looks like a fun trip, I am glad you showed us some photos.  I have recently become curious about the Salton Sea area......a place that just didn't turn out the way it was planned.

With a bit of time spent on the bike and learning it's quirks  - you should be able to make it a reliable running bike.  The bike is pretty simple, and generally reliable if you keep the fuel system clean and oil in the engine, and understand the cam chain tensioner, head plug and other oil leak issues.
