Truth is ..... the Parkway is beautiful, but the speed limit is only 35-45 mph, it is marked with a double yellow line all the way down it and the scenery does get kinda repetitive after the first hour.

It is an endless rolling roadblock trip ......          :-X       Unless you treat them like porkchops that is, then it is an endless dessert buffet to an unrepentant type Savager.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Dave on 09/05/16 at 04:27:42

I think that list of the 10 top rides represents several different riding styles, and reason for appeal.  Obviously the Tail of the Dragon is for the fun of the twisties....several others more likely for scenery.

My wife and I hauled a bike up to Michigan a couple summers ago and we rode around the Traverse City area in Michigan, including the Cherry grove areas to the north.  We rode the Tunnel of Trees, and it is worth riding if you are in the area - I am not sure if it would be worth traveling more than a few hours to go ride it.  The road passes along the edge of Lake Michigan, and it does offer some pretty scenery and a lot of touristy little towns, lots of shops with crafts, some quirky shops, and restaurants along the way.  There are trees in several sections between towns....never much of a tunnel, and the traveling speed has to kept fairly slow as the sand tends to wash into the roadway when it rains, and several times we had to alter the path in a corner to avoid turning when we found a patch of sand in the middle of a corner.  There is a really cool Polish Restaurant called "Legs" on the north end of the Tunnel of Trees......it was a great place to see as they have an excellent view of the lake, the restaurant is very artsy, and the food was really tasty.

The Tunnel of Trees is a nice double up, cruising around, looking at Lake Michigan scenery, and stopping at small towns to shop and eat ice cream.

:-X

So many places to ride  ???

I'm so confused !!!

;D

Ok , first rule :   1.   Its not wise or safe to take long rides by your self .
                             The buddy system works good

OldFeller , might have hit the nail on the head with the Parkway.   We have done some of the best ridding in the Country in his back yard !  ;)

Dave's place worked out GREAT this year !

I wish everybody could have stayed longer when it was my turn to Host an event and I'd enjoy Hosting again (for up to 25 Savages or so) .

Youzguyz , Did a GREAT job Hosting in TX.  I've still got the picture of Stone-Hinge on my phone !

There ain't nothing keeping us from anywhere in the country , if we can find a host who can take three days off work !  :)

Hopefull, I will be a better host next time!!  Too much work, sickness, and such put a big limit on my participation in 2016.  :-[

Sure wish I could get out to some of the other gatherings..  :(

My wife is muttering she wants me to quit my job as the 12 hr shifts are eating me up some.   We are waiting to see what Obamacare is going to morph into here in NC, as right now it is expensive with only Blue Cross and Blue Shield participating.   After my next birthday I will check to see what retirement I could get out of the gov, and balance that against the monthly insurance cost I would have to pay.

There is no independent "for individuals" insurance for much of anything any more where I live, Obamacare has wrecked the individual based insurance industry driving many of the smaller carriers flat out of business, then jacking the price right back up PAST where it was originally.  Then you got that anual govvy fine shite to deal with, which my wife refuses to even consider paying as it affronts her greatly.   This is actually my lowest cost option.   I keep telling her the fine is only one month's insurance cost, and then she starts crying at me as she feel helpless to watch me decline.

My health is indeed beginning to go downhill, so my riding participation will be selective this upcoming year.    I felt great after the surgery, but reality is that I am weaker than before the surgery and hadn't even learned what Warfrin Butt was all about yet.

Both MM's and Dave's are fun,  Dave's garage is as large as some of my old houses were in square feet and it is outfitted like a car/bike guy's toyland.   MM's place is actually more my style as it is very real and it has been used by dozens of scouts, friends, church groups, etc. etc.

Let's plan to go to MM's next, as he can squeeze one in easier since he isn't going anywhere that way (and his wife likes visitors so she might not count that against MM's running totals).

Plus the place is rifle pistol friendly, right off the back patio if need be.   And the stone game room could be our group "tent" as it is close by the bathroom.

;)   important, that last part

Now, here is what is warped, I still feel and think like I was 20 something (OK, slower on the thinking part, I'll give you that).   But I still feel young .....

AND, riding is a spinal / lower brain set of muscle memory items and I find I can still ride fast in the mountains at will, with no relearning to speak of.

I think the Jeb excursion two years ago was the fastest I ever went on a Savage -- Jeb would likely flat eat my butt up now since he's likely gotten better.

I though Dave's place was a better set-up .
There was lots of stuff to do and neat places to ride !

:)

Hosting at my place wouldn't count against my Quota of "Three Day" and "Week Long" rides .

yea ; I think I pushed my limit this year  ::)

I have one spare room/bed , then the 9' x 18' rock house (airconditioned - couch and chair - 42" TV - PS3 - floor room for 3 or 4 cots ).   Then there is Tent space for twenty more in the yard BYOT and a fire pit modeled after the one at the Dragon.

OldFeller , if we go further than my place ...  :-? ... , I have a 5x8 trailer with ramp tailgate , two wheel cocks and a truck to pull it.  We can put your's and mine on it and go anywhere (plus cab - Ranger/4.0 V-6).  ;) 20mpg neighborhood .

Bought me one of those Hennesy Hammock tents.... should be here in a week.
I used to love sleeping outside in a hammock when I was younger.... and I sleep in a lounge chair most nights because my hips hurt and I roll a lot.
So I'm thinking the hammock might be my new tent....
I got it while it was on sale.... about half price, it was a Demo model

Who wants to plan somewhere nearer by the NC Kentucky Tennessee side of things?

Thinking back over all the years of trips we have done, the ones that stand out the most were visiting MM and Dave's farms, the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground trips and the Kickstand Lodge trip (off of all the good reports from last year) so put them into the mixer cup and shake it a time or two and see what comes out.

I think we have learned we do need a set camp area to go out from on our daily forays, and actually the Blue Ridge and the Kickstand are simply on the left and right sides of our favorite stomping grounds.

Kickstand for next year ???     I think it is nearer to the "best roads" than Blue Ridge.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Dave on 10/10/16 at 04:14:04

I do believe the Kickstand has a lot to offer.  The bathrooms and showers are clean, and you get free towels.  The laundry is also free (however you might have to empty the drier and fold some towels)!  The bunkhouse is in the north end of the bathhouse/laundry building ($ 22 a night), which is nice for us older folks...the tent area and most of the cabins require a bit of a walk.  The atmosphere is very laid back, friendly folks, free bike wash, some covered bike parking, and you can take your car/truck to the campground to unload your tent/gear.  It is only 15 minutes away from Robinsville when you need food or supplies (or when MM needs to stock up on Mountain Dew  from the Dollar Store).  The location is right on 28 which provides great access to some of our favorite rides like the Dragon, Wayah Road, and longer rides to the Cherohala Skyway, the Blue Ridge Parkway.......last year we rode on the Parkway over toward Brevard - that was a very nice ride except for the rain we hit in Cherokee.  If we were really adventurous we could stay a that the Kickstand Lodge and do most our riding from there - but we could pack enough for 1 nights stay at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground and ride over in that area.  Staying at a central area also allows folks to arrive on different days/evenings and hook up with the folks who are already there.

Dave, propose us a date that dodges the most rain in the late spring early summer.   We have to simply say that we have gotten wet at least once on most of our past trips, it is just part of the game up there in the mountains.

Expect it, and I find if you just ignore it you are completely dry a half hour later due to the wind blast anyway ......  so just bring you a full face shield style helmet to bounce off them raindrops and defend against them ugly 'ol June bugs and butterflies.

;)

Here is the temperature/precipitation records for April 2016.  Precipitation is low, daytime temps are good....nights look really cold and often are in the high 30's!
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/robbinsville-nc/28771/april-weather/12174_pc?monyr=4/1/2016&view=table

Here is the same data for May, the precipitation is still low, the night time temps have come up about 10 degrees and are in the mid 40's at the beginning of the month and mid 50's by the end of the month (daytime temps are very pleasant 70's):
http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/robbinsville-nc/28771/may-weather/12174_pc?monyr=5/1/2016&view=table

Here is the same for June and the night time temps are finally starting to look reasonable for motorcycle camping/riding with 55-60 degree overnight temps.  I think June is about as early as is reasonable for a group trip (daytime temps have unfortunately climbed into the 80's).

Realizing that we are pretty far out still, and there is time enough to move the stake in the sand if need be, which weekend in June would you be picking?

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Dave on 10/13/16 at 04:45:43

I really don't care which weekend, and it may be good for others with families and commitments to help decide.  The end of the month is very near to the 4th of July weekend - and that often provides the least amount of tourists and traffic in the area (as the majority will be taking trips over the holiday weekend).  The temperatures and precipitation appear to be similar all month and likely can't be predicted very far in advance - but I am very flexible and if it turns out we picked a wet (rain out) weekend, I have no problem waiting until the next dry weekend.

So....how about some other folks (Stewmills, Springman, MMRanch, Versy, Lancer, Kris01, Steve H, Armen, Gary_in_NJ, etc.) to comment.

I'm Retired !  ;)  .......  I hope every one of ya'll get to experience how much fun my life is now  :) .

While we are planning  :

any one of ya'll headed to a ride , who needs an overnight spot near southern middle TN. , can camp in my 10 x 22 - air conditioned rock house/garage (one couch and chair) ,  or tent in the yard .   Then we can go on to the ride the next day.  There is plenty of parking space , and the Dragon is only a 5-6 hour ride east of here on  "River-Road" type 2 lane black-top .
I might need the same if we go to the "Black-Hills" or a similar ride . :D

This year in my area , August and September have been REALLY DRY .   But there ain't no way I'm waiting for August for the first ride of the year !  :P
So :
Anybody going to Daytona in 2017 ?  ;D

Main question becomes "when" ???   When is the best dry season up on your mountain?

Thinking Arpil-May timeframe for the Oklahoma trip for anyone interested.
We have 2 spare rooms and 70 acres to camp on if that is your preference;
ranges to shoot anything you desire to bring;
2 ponds and a river to fish;
occasional wild hog/s;
other assorted critters;
2 car garage and a barn/shop...anything from airing up a tire to an engine rebuild.

Breakfast:  biscuits & gravy, eggs, sausage, bacon, cold or hot cereal, grubs etc.

Post your available timeframe/s.

What are the odds of finding a mid point between middle TN. and middle Oklahoma.
I do have a 5x8 w/ramp and two wheel holder thingies , if necessary.

I'd rather ride 350 miles a day and make two days out of the trip , than run 75 mph down the Super Slab all day long for 700 miles .
But we need a friendly face with a big yard or some floor space to spare in East Arkansas.   :-?

Better Yet !
Pick-up some more riders along the way !   ;)
I think we have about 14,000 members don't we ???

Life's to short not to make the most fun out of our time !  8-)

I got an idea.    Christian Charity -- figure out your riding path then email churches along the way asking for permission to pitch a tent on the grounds for a night.    Most will say yes, if given enough lead time.

I know we always did, and generally exceeded that with a meal and a bed at somebody's house.   Only thing it required was enough time for the church to talk it out and be ready for you.

If we can figure out how to do this gracefully, trip costs will go down a LOT and the slow travel thing will become much more suitable.

If it falls through, campground.   If that falls through, cheap hotel.

In any case, we are talking Barcalounger style riding here, not Savage ......  but I do like the idea of riding about 350-400 miles a day and sleeping well at night.

I discovered a new feature added and refined about six months ago by Google Maps,  a feature that makes motorcycle trip planning for Android cell phone navigation users a bloody snap.

http://lifehacker.com/google-maps-can-now-send-directions-from-your-desktop-t-1717230486

Sit at your computer, figure out your best pathway and send it to your phone.   Make sure you have enough free memory on your phone to add another large map area or it will not work.

Glitches took several months to work out, so it should be getting more solid as a feature now.

AS ALWAYS, you HAVE to start up a new saved map route while sitting in a wifi zone at a Hardees or a McDonalds or it simply won't go.   After that, it will run off of stored map in memory as long as you saved the route with the map area.   Remember not to turn your phone off ....

The Lancer visit sounds good to me. I'll keep checking on it to see what dates are finally decided on. If I can get away from work and home then count me in.

I'm heading to Orlando for the 4th of July to meet up with siblings so I will not be able to make any rides in that general time frame. But that does not mean I cannot make a ride later in the year!!! ;)

Hey Lancer, what city/town are you in or close to? Just want to figure out approximate route and riding time.

Hey old.indian, don't feed me beans and Texas will smell just fine. It would be nice to meet you at Lancer's.

Kenny, it would be great to finally meet you too.

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET YET ....  same month can be listed and is fine for different areas of the country.   I am plugging in names as people show interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is going were plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

So far we got the following in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

The June event at Kickstand Lodge is most likely a go for me....it is the right time of year to be there, the location is very easy for me to get to, and the riding around there suits my need for curves very well.  And I did like the KSL and the people there.....really laid back, free laundry, nice campground, easy access to the food and shops in Robbinsville.  And for those folks riding a bike in....the cabins and bunkhouse are affordable (the bunkhouse is part of the shower/bath building - so you only have to walk 30 feet if nature calls in the middle of the night).

I would also be likely to attend an event at MM's place.....that is another place that is close to home for me.

Some of the other events are just a bit too far away for me this coming summer - the booming economy is really making it hard to see any way to get away for a week or more in the middle of summer....or even this winter (I was at work this morning at 4:30 AM, and I won't be home until about 9 PM....we are slammed and this is usually our slowest time of the year).

I might also be able to meet up with anybody that wants to go to the Deals Gap, Franklin, Waynesville area for a long weekend in the summer months....Stewmills, Steve H, old_rider and I may have a Ninja gathering!  This type of gathering most likely will have to be with fellows that are flexible in their schedule - as I don't like riding in the rain and would like to stay home if it is a rainy weekend - then we can just postpone the trip to the next good weather weekend.

You got lots of folks who don't read the list every day,    give it a week or so (we got lots of time).

For example, your Indian Paintbrush trip is alive and kicking (3 takers) and needs some firm dates plugged into it.

Lancer indicated April-May for the trip to his place. That time span is probably doable for me.

As far as Arkansas, I had not thought of a date, I just know I want to go!!! I believe I can get to southeast Arkansas in one day and there are supposed to be plenty of roads to keep us all happy.

I see my ride to Lancer's as about 450 miles, a long hard day of riding. Or  a long day with a good night's sleep somewhere along the way and a relatively short ride the next day. Either way, it works for me.

While I would enjoy going up to see Lancer and everyone else, it is doubtful that I could get away to do so.

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=camping+on+public+land

https://gearjunkie.com/camp-free-public-land-dispersed-camping

https://freecampsites.net/

The last one works cool, just click on a spot on the map and it brings up places in that area. Ya just need a tent, water, and a cherry pie for breakfast in the morning!

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Oldfeller on 12/09/16 at 12:49:17

Badwolf, that last one is a jewel, I put it on my taskbar site list because it can be very useful in the future.

I like free, the price is about right for these "camp as you go" trips.

Also seeing that the 24 hour Walmart Supercenters really don't care if you go off behind their water overfill fenced areas and toss up a one man tent.   The overgrown overfill area fence puts up a vision proof barrier and you are "behind the store" so not even security goes back that far to check on anything beyond a casual ride around at night.   You park the bike up by the main store entrance and let the parking lot security take care of it for you.   Got bathrooms, food, whatever available 24 hours a day should you want or need it.

I think with minimum planning you could hit a free campground area, and if they are too widely spread you can do an alternate night's snooze at a Wally or if you know far enough ahead make previous arrangements to stay at a local church.

MM, put https://freecampsites.net/ up on your saved places up at the top of your browser.

Now, click on it and zoom into Florida and click on Daytona Beach for Daytona Beach Bike Week.   Wammo, instant camping about an hour, hour and a half away at Ochala National Forest.

It even lists the Walmarts with accessible camping spots.

Now re-zoom on the St Augustine area for Thunder Run Bike Week.   Wammo, instant camping at Appalachacola National Forest less than an hour away.

I LIKE this app a lot --- we can go ANYWHERE we want to, by easy daily stages.   The price is right and we can share a location with the group and arrange meet up times to say howdy to the locals.

Carry a water bottle, a roll of toilet paper and a single person tent  (no per tent $20 charges to worry about) and this app on both your cell phones and GO PLACES.

Pop up tents are out as they twist/fold up into huge 32" diameter round things (a shape that is a really poor fit on a bike).   Plus, Amazon had a manly looking green "2 person tent"  (that is really just a one person tent) for $15.99 that folds and rolls into a normal sized single tent roll.   Wally sells the same tent at the same price, but you pay shipping or wait for in-store delivery, so Amazon Prime makes some sense here.

So it takes 5-10 minutes to put up, big deal .....        ;)

http://https://us-i5.tb.wal.co/asr/056b139d-76d8-4aed-87c9-15d74f088194_1.c1f36ecbe357c0971596372dda7f12b7.jpeg?odnHeight=450&odnWidth=450&odnBg=FFFFFF

Pop test -- take your new favorite app and click on the Dragon      ;D     Count them, three (3) freebee camping sites with a total of 12-15 slots within easy reach of the Dragon.
Two of them are on Tapco road actually closer in to the Dragon than Robinsville (go downhill to breakfast at Huddle House in Robinsville?)

OldFeller

I've got a 8'x10'x72" , that I can put up in 5-10 min. and there is plenty of room without getting "to-cozy"  ::) , got a door on both sides too.

Its small enough that I tie it under my headlight to the bottom of the triple tree.    Just bring your air mattress and we'll blow it up with the 12V compressor I keep in the saddle bag.   Just remember your half is only 5'x8' of the tent .   ;)

I saw OldRider with a twin-size air mattress at one of our Dragon runs , I got one of them and like it , till I try to get up in the middle of the night.  :-[
I like the mil. style cots better because they are easier to get out/off of and they double as a chair. I've got 4 of them , your welcome to borrow one of them too.    Wouldn't be neat if somebody made a "Back-packing reclining camp chair , that was pack-able ?   Those Cots fit on the rear seat just fine, but they are a little heavy.

Mine gets good reviews from fat people ......  has a 300 lb max weight mostly due to the oversized foot thingies that don't sink down into the dirt.

It is a little taller than the one you bought, but you are more flexible than I am.

For your wife, to show her that you love her and care about her worries ....

Give her a better tool to know where your butt is located (except when you are off the grid up in the high mountains, of course).

Now whenever your dot stops moving (or it disappears completely) she can worry even more .....

:P

A bit more practical, if you are on a group trip and get separated, you can maybe find the other group a wee bit easier.

This has only happened 6-8 times with the Savage trips .....         ;)

Dave,   I didn't say your wife, I meant my wife,  (who is a sorta tougher kind of critter).    She'd just call me to bless me out periodically and then threaten to sell my other bike while I was gone if the app actually gave out that kind of info.

Besides, who speed any more?   Certainly not me .....  :-?    :-/     :-X

Mebbe we need a different app ???

MM, my overnight on the way up to meet you for Lancers will be this one.

The trip, like a ship, is always female, alluring, wonderous.

You are a guy, that's why you want to go with her (or ride on her, should you wish to be more motorcycle / basic).

In any case if she is real, add her to the listing .....   others will likely wish to ride on her, I am sure.

Do we need to do a side excursion on the Kickstand trip to check this out?   How basic can we go on group outings?   If we were trailering anyway and somebody brought a cooler & ice and it has bathrooms and tables ......

If this is for real, it may be a good find.

well even if that camp didn't work out the dragon is right up the road !  ;)

But I'd like to try it !

soon as warm weather sets back in ...  ::)

Same with any of these camps , if one of them don't work ... we split a motel that night  :P

I can go a lot more places if we keep cost down , I've got back-packing camp stove too.  Wood (twigs or match-light charcoal) burning (folds flat and small) or Gasoline (like a single stove eye)   :)

So right ..... and I think the Dragon Lodge owes us a free shower or two up at the tennis courts shower for all the times they clipped us for all their funny little "gotcha" rules.

Taking a Navy Shower can be done just about anywhere, walk in with the change of clothes, wash off, change clothes and exit with the same WalMart bag you walked in with.

You know, food has never really been an issue.

We eat bigger for breakfast (the cheapest meal) and then generally forget to do lunch and we catch dinner somewhere on the way back to the campsite.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Dave on 12/11/16 at 03:47:06

I will likely just stay at the Kickstand Lodge if/when you go exploring at the free campsite.  While I do agree the free campsite "lists" are a great thing for overnight stay while you ride to other places - I have no problem paying $20 a night for a clean bathroom, showers, free towels, free laundry, a free bike wash, and the clubhouse with free WiFi and tables and chairs (and lights).  Camping is only $12.50 a night when 2 people share a tent, $10 a night with 3 in a tent, less that $8 a night with 4 in the big tent. (Most often we ride in 90 degree weather and I wear an armored jacket/gloves/full face helmet.......I need a shower before I go to bed!)

Ms. Gary_in_NJ:  I don't think there will be a gathering at my house this year, I don't foresee a lot of extra time in my summer and we probably won't have time to host an event.  Maybe MM and I should consider trading the event and each host the group every/other year.  This will give me a chance to build up my catfish count so that we can have the catfish fry.  Do you know of a good riding place between NJ and KY that has good riding?  Maybe we could start a new ride more to the east and give others a chance to come to a group ride?

Can anyone suggest a good riding are in PA, WV, etc.?

Dave,

Riding any of the roads that run parallel to the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania is a good ride, but not exciting like The Dragon or 3 Ugly Sisters.

A very scenic ride.

Actually, there is a 60 mile long stretch of twisty roads on Route 6 in Crawford County PA. It passes through an area known as "The Grand Canyon of PA". Let me see if I can string together some roads form a location that would provide a two-day opportunity of fun/scenic roads with camping.

Right now it is a very vague "July to first week in August"  so you need to talk to your wife and consult w/Dave as to which week you want to aim at.    Dave has to be able to get away and we need to dodge the bad rainy weather as much as is possible to do.

Letting your wife help pick the dates is simple good sense --- she is part of it after all.

Yea Dave :

There is a little town called Sherwood over the mountain and the road getting there should be listed where other folks can find it.
Then there is 41A up to Monteagle and Hwy 41 comming down the same mountain.   Thats the road that Versey is referring too.

Ain't none of them as good as that ride you took us through the Park and the loop that got us there.  8-)

I can put us a couple of day-rides together that cover most of what we got .
O-Yea there is Hwy. 56 comming down off Monteagle Mountain into South Pittsburgh where the Lodge Cast-Iron is made. The road is so steep a LS-650 in 3rd gear wide open won't gain speed going up it.   I'll bet its really fun in the winter .  ::)

All this planning sounds interesting. I do not know if I can make more than one ride this year and that being the case the ride to Lancer's is what I want to do. Just like Gary, we are doing our family vacation in early July and I do not know yet if I will be able to take off for a ride in the second part of the year. Waiting on Lancer to set a date. This sounds like a really fun gathering.

Now let me just be clear about things. Just because the 2nd half of the year looks difficult for me, does not mean I am necessarily counting myself out. ;D ;D ;D

OK, you guys are beginning to ask the wife about what's planned on the family side of things and that is good -- can't plan these bike trips in a vacuum.

Springman is kinda sorta over committed (yeah, I know, kid in the candy store) and is beginning to pull back some.   When he picks his trips, he'll post and we will adjust all the listings.

Old_Rider is incommunicado so trips to his area are coming up with "no takers" at this point in time and may actually be dropped after the first of the year.

The rest of us need to look at what we can really do and plan for a reasonable amount of trips (the best ones that we think we can really do).

Count me in at 75% for the Kickstand Lodge June 21-24.  I will have been there the weekend of May 12 for another group ride but should be able to sneak in another 3 day weekend.

I would like to attend the Thunder Beach Run May 3-7 since it's only a 3 hour drive from me, but since I already have plans the following weekend I am not so sure I can squeeze in another weekend away as somewhere in this whole mix I'll have a full week off in May for a family vacation.

The good part is : its not that far from the Dragon , the bad news is its 20-24 June .

It is too far out to do get a weather prediction for June - but you can look at the historical averages.  June appears to be OK all month - in the first week or two you could get temps down in the 50's overnight - but the daytime temps are in the high 70's.  After the second week the temps are up in the 60's at night and 80's in the daytime.  The rain is always a risk......and you can't get a good idea on that until a few days before we leave.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/robbinsville-nc/28771/month/12174_pc?monyr=6/01/2016

My schedule is flexible, and if a planned weekend were to prove to be really wet - I could move my schedule to the next dry weekend.  An occasional spotty shower is no big deal and is to be expected - but a forecast for a 3 day rainout and I am likely to stay home.

I can tell you that I "fell" for one of MMRanch's Road Captain moves.  I was on the Dragon and I was catching up to MM.....and then as I was just about to move in for the pass we came up on some slower traffic......MM raised his left hand/arm just like the commander of the Cavalry does when he wants them all to stop - and I fell for it and let off the throttle and slowed down.

That left hand/arm of MM's sure does carry some authority! ;)

Dave ,  I remember that .

But I knew you were right on my trail and if I let off the throttle for even a second then I'd be following you .   And I'm not sure I'd be keeping up as sure as you were.   You know my Savage can only go-so-fast  , if I'd been going any faster then I'd have to start using the breaks to slow down for the corners. :)

I did pass one of them once before I was a member .   It was in a different chapter .   So we were on a 5 lane Hwy , doing 35 in a 40 zone , really light traffic , in the right lane w/nothing in the left lane .  Well the pokey cage we were  following slows to turn right .   You would think we would just switch lanes and speed-up  :) .   No , the Road Captain hits the brakes ---  :P ---  ::) ---  :o --- , I changed lanes and went on !  ;)
I guess my patience gets thin with folks who don't know whats around them while they are on the road .   Yea , after a while I waited for them to catch-up.   I guess it was kinda embarrassing for the guy so I didn't rub-it-in  .   I did tell him to "pay-more-attention , if he was going to lead."    Next ride we went on  he  actually did 45 mph in the 45 zones , but he never did get out of the habit of  using his brakes as his first line of defense.   Suspect he didn't learn to drive on a Honda 65cc ?  ;D

Sorry about not posting... haven't been interneting much...
I've been REALLY busy, long work hours, 2 hour drive to work (one way, I leave at 3:30am and get back at 5pm), looking for a house in Alabama near Foley/Fairhope area (every weekend search), Truck is acting up...been working every night on it....sigh...
I got my two DJI quads and can't even get the good one updated to latest software! let alone fly them....

Thunder beach is a bunch of vendor areas all over town, with one or two main event areas.
VERY crowded but fun to see all the bikes and types of folks.
It is one hour from where I live, nice flat straight drive....like all florida roads :)
I have never looked for campsites around here and i'm not sure i'll be living here when the first one rolls around, I'll be two hours west of here by then, making the trip 3 hours to get to.
I have never gone to Daytona, heard it is three times the size of Thunder Beach and about 10 times as rowdy, although i've never seen TB get rowdy but one time during a late night concert. ( a few cop cars with sirens and ten or so officers and it ended in about 15 min).

Old_Rider, are you saying that you may not be in town by then?

If so, I think we should pull the event listings as Savage events, as otherwise they are just massive Hurley Herd events ....

... really really massive Hurley Herd events.

Like, major traffic jam huge at Daytona Beach .....

Regarding the May Ride, according to Accuweather the average temps are lows at about 60 and highs 80-83 for the last 3 weeks of May.  Sounds like near perfect riding temps.  Of course there are occasional showers but usually they come through and are gone.  Any heavy rain systems won't be known until much closer to the time.  Also, God can intervene at any time and change things, but for planning purposes it looks like a good time.

Besides this ride here in Oklahoma, I have an  interest in:

Twisted Sisters in april
Denver in June
MM's farm in August

Put me down for those and hopefully I will be able to participate.

;)      Moderators, if you see something is wrong or is being missed in the shuffle, reach in and fix it -- that's what you got them long fingers for.

God's Acre Ride   NEED FIRM DATES   Sunday - Tuesday ride to visit an ancient Indian healing spring located at Healing Springs Road,  Blackville, South Carolina, 29817.    http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/god-s-acre-healing-springs

Culled the two massive Hurley Herd events in Florida, added all the takers showing interest to the rest of the trips.    Read and correct any misunderstood sign ups, please.

The Arkansas trip really needs some dates -- still a little bit too theoretical to get very many takers.  Nobody wants to sign up for a trip with an unknown month .....

A considerable number of the trips are solid now, so the trip coordinator needs to post some firm dates after talking to his group some.

I've been looking at my calendar ,

August 11th and 12th is our Tn. State Rally at Montgomery Bell State Park.   It is :
Day Rides
Bike Games
Good clean fun and games every night
Camping at the State Park is cheep and easy , if anybody want to go I'll get two campsites and we can fill them up with tents (I have (4) cots ).   Our group usually get at least (3) camp sites anyway.

Or

Our Lynchburg Motorcycle Rally is usually on 9/11 weekend and the weather is usually nice that week.   That might be a good time to be in Lynchburg.
On Friday Venders set-up in the park , then Saturday there is a Poker-Run followed by :
Some times its Trials Bikes Stunts
Some times its Stunt Sport Bikes (geared low - wheelies , stopies , etc.)
Live Music Saturday Night.
One year Dave cleaned our bikes and we entered the Bike contest thingie , We all won trophy s !

I'll go get more info next week . ;)

Yea , That bunch that set-up Obama care  >:(

unfortunately , it rains on the unjust and the just.
all it takes to understand the situation is a study of the Old Testament .   Our nation has to be punished into repentance and your paying the price for the sin of others .   I'm sorry your caught in middle here buddy.  :(

Anybody that says that ; "their sin isn't anybody's  businesses" ... is completely ignorant of what forces are really in the world.  Until the  LIGHTS  come on for them they never can see ... I know , its SAD !

I've got a friend who had lost cost insurance where she works ,  her low cost plan didn't measure-up to the new requirements so it was dropped.  That left her paying Hundreds of $$$ more for what she didn't need.

The HORROR  STORIES go on endlessly , but if you wanted to become a member of the opposite sex at least your insurance would pay for that now !    ::)

What I was getting at is that the  :  All inclusive insurance is more expensive , and now we are paying the Bill for it .

And then there is , the price of the Nation's Sin , I'm Sure we'll be paying the price for that too!  :(

We have been paying for our sin, at least in part.
Gods hand was lifted slightly these past years and we felt the enemy rush in.
For the time being He has responded to His people humbling themselves and seeking His face and given us a second chance with a new president who seems willing to try to do God's will...mostly.

I NEED to go here :

http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/god-s-acre-healing-springs

Its just a little South of where you live .   Soon as the weather warms up you interested in a day ride ?

:-?

The Information about it , was kinda brought to me in a most   USUAL  WAY   through a series of coincidences ...

An  X-student I haven't seen in years
Happened to be in Tn. visiting her mom.
Happened to attend a Wedding because her friend was invited .
Happened to be buying a house on the same road as the Spring.
The Wedding was for one of my Friend's Daughter.
There were close to 100 folks there and she almost left without us catching each others eyes .  Then neither of us knew why we needed to talk till I said " We get to SC. sometimes on Dragon-Day-Rides"
Come to find out Kathy's  mom in-law runs a Biker-Friendly Cafe "Millers Bread Basket" in the Blackville SC. area.
https://www.yelp.com/biz/millers-bread-basket-blackville

And -- there is a State Park near that has camping and camping cabins ,bath-house stuff .

Seems like a ready made Ride just waiting on us !  :)

Yes, let's list it on the rides listing to see if we gain any co-riders.   http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/god-s-acre-healing-springs

Interesting history to that artesian well .....     The property officially belongs to God for public use, so we could treat it respectfully and pitch a tent off to the side of the parking lot for an overnight or so.    Pay to camp digs are also nearby, need to check it out anyway as it is the second major attraction in the area.    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g54143-d8591494-Reviews-Barnwell_State_Park-Blackville_South_Carolina.html

Sunday through Tuesday are my natural days off, so we can tweek that some by using up a vacation day.

Here is the general temperatures/rainfall for Blackville, SC   Late April to May looks good

Blackville weather essentials

Yes, at the Chez Moi hotel, right down the hall from me ....

We got more takers on the way though, if it is more than jest you, we may pitch a tent in the back yard.   If we do that, I've got the Canvas Taj Mahal we can put up and let air out a day or so in advance -- lots of room for any who come (and it needs to be put up every decade or so to stay fresh).

May 7th is OK with me ... if it works for everybody else  and the weather cooperates ?

Think overflow and you got it.    I got no clue how many may come at this stage of things.

Plus, I don't know if the wife's 50 pound puppy and her herd of cats would put you off any.
After all it's "their" house and "their" bed, they just allow us to share it on good behavior ....

Plus it is easier for your bike to stay all packed up and use my tent, plus I get help putting the big arsed sucker up and down that way.

Fayetteville, NC has history, some of it not very appealing, but a long history in any case.

It was the highest navigable point in the Cape Fear River system, and as such the riverboats and barges all got offloaded at Fayetteville and then went by road all over the rest of the Deep South.

Wilmington down at the mouth of the river and Fayetteville up at the top of the river were serious regional commercial hubs back in the day.

Fayetteville really was the main slave hub for the south, and we have the Market House still standing in the dead center of town.   I was an adult when they took down the slave chain & rings off the center columns because it was way too Politically Incorrect and the chains & rings 'simply had to be removed' in the 90's despite the various historical societies having kittens over the historical desecration of it all.   It was always called the Slave Market previously as they auctioned the naked slaves there like cattle, then when they removed the chain & rings it became "the Market House" making out like farmers had just brought their garden crops there to sell on Saturday mornings.

Revisionist history at its finest.

Next item of some historical worth is the 87th Airborne Paratrooper Museum downtown -- Fort Bragg has always been home to America's paratroopers and the full graphical history of drop troops from day one to the last series of police actions was on display there.   PC has struck there as well, most of the heavy machine guns, drop artillery, mortars, flame throwers and such have been removed in the last 10 years.

Fayetteville WAS a major manufacturing hub of some considerable size, and we could take an outside the fence tour of closed major facilities such as Black and Decker, Monsanto, Cutler Hammer, Morganite, Purolater, Kelly Springfield (Goodyear) and the like.  Depressing as hell with new grass sprouting up through the cracked pavement--- and I wouldn't really want to lead such a jaunt as it cuts way too too close to home for me.    I worked at those places for over 30 years but only Goodyear and just part of Purolater remains open as of today.

Fayetteville and Spring Lake have some gun stores of some size, worth checking out if you are into that sort of stuff.

Food --- I have 20 pounds of Chicken Leg Quarters in the freezer and a smoker grill.          ::)        Sorry, no fresh caught 18 pound catfish.

Dates for the Twisted Sisters Run.
OF says "Mid to Late April"

Not really my call when it happens, as I am here already and I only act as "tour guide".
Better known as me going for a ride like I normally would and anybody who happens to be around is welcome to follow me.
OK.. a bit more formal than that.  I will make sure the same number (or more) motorcycles are still behind me when I stop for lunch.  ::)

Seriousely folks.  Like I said before, ya'll are welcome here anytime.
If it is just you passing through or staying in the area for a while, I will do my best (and hopefully better this year  :-[ ) to make sure you see some of the fine roads that are here to be ridden.

And I will make sure that this doesn't happen to you!!!

In truth, Youzguyz, the old date for the old run was cribbed from your last year's listing.

There is nothing to say your group cannot change the date to something that suits the group better.   Things will come up and dates will change on all of these events -- this is why the events listing keeps getting changed and copied down to each page as it fills up.

It moves and breathes -- it is alive .....

Exactly..  It just doesn't matter when people want to come here (well.. late summer really is not a good idea) as long as they coordinate when they want to get here so they all get here when the other ones are here, as it is a "gathering".
Soooo.. Lancer and Springman.  If you both are feeling the urge to "head for the Hills (Country)", put your heads together and see what works for ya'll.  :D

Individuals are also welcome to wander through the area when it suits them and I will ride with them as well.  8-)

I'd love to take 3 or 4 of these trips but it ain't gonna happen because the Mrs. and I are going on our very first trip to Hawaii this March. Along with our week-long vacation to Sunset Beach with the whole gosh-darned family this summer and my normal volunteer week at church camp. I've only got so much vacation time here at the Dept of Transportation.

But I AM interested in going to Kickstand Lodge. Even though I can't attend for all five days and I will probably fall waaaaay behind everybody else if y'all do the Dragon, I'd love to try it.

So please count me in for at least three days of the middle of June!!   :D

The neat part of the Tail of the Dragon is that we can all ride at our own speeds, and then catch up at the overlook area.  Our general routine is to go at a slow pace with any new rider for their first trip through....then pick up the pace once the new rider knows what to expect.  There are lots of blind corners, and a several of them start out at a gentle radius that gets tighter as the corner continues (decreasing radius for your Transportation guys).....and which corners do that changes when you ride the other direction.  There are also days and time when the Dragon should be avoided.  All day Thursday and Friday mornings are OK.....Friday afternoons and Saturdays can be a circus.  Some weekends car clubs can have events in the area, and it can make the Dragon unsafe as they have trouble staying in their lane on the tight curves.

There are other incredible roads in the area.....Moonshiner 28 is a road that is full of curves, Wayah Road is nearby, the Cherohala Skyway is not far away, etc.  We ride at our own pace, then stop at the next intersection to gather up before moving on.  As a group we don't ride over the speed limits - the fun comes from riding the curves without slowing down much!

The Kickstand Lodge works great for us to gather together and ride whatever days we can.  I tend to show up on a Wednesday night and leave on Sunday.....that way I only miss 2 days of work.

;)      Moderators, if you see something is wrong or is being missed in the shuffle, reach in and fix it -- that's what you got them long fingers for.

Lancer you thinking the last half of May .   What about penciling in the week of  22-27 May ?  :-?   Don't know about the rest of ya'll but my calendar is beginning to look crowded .   :P   I'd like to go to Denver too  :),  but  trying to fit everything in and keep peace in the Family is kinda like juggling hot coffee cups .   ::)  somewhat !  ;D

I'm going to visit (Pat) the feller that does our Lynchburg Motorcycle Rally tomorrow .   He has been having it on 9/11 weekend for the last two years.  If its the same deal for this year too then I'm thinking "That's the best time for our MMRanch Ride."

When you slip the MM farm trip back past the second week of August and mebbe even into September, you are rolling craps against a football schedule "lockout" at the University.

Which is OK, I still got 50-50 odds on hitting a free weekend.    If I lock my vacation down early enough in the year previous and they don't actually cook up the football restriction schedule until fall of the next year, sometimes I get to negotiate with them that I had a "prior request filed a long time ago in advance that has been approved for over six months".

So figure out what works for the group and let me file for the days way way early.

Lancer are you saying you are not going on the Indian Paintbrush trip ???

Yep, I will record your current discussion dates until such time you change them again.

FOLKS CAN'T PLAN ON GOING ON YOUR TRIP UNLESS THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO BE.

Some of us still have to punch a time clock and have to reserve our vacation time well in advance.

MM for example is overbooked every year and has to dodge his family and CMA "reserved date" responsibilities.

If you are conning a trip, you should have DATES listed by the end of next week or you risk getting your preferred time slot actually taken over by another trip group who is shifting their dates around for whatever good reason that comes up for them.

If the trips are far apart geographically and involve different people, that's fine, no problem.

However, we have seen folks procrastinate their trip out of existence a couple of times in years past as their dates get taken over because some other group MOVED on them in a timely fashion.

Sad, but it happens.

This had nothing to do with wanting to go to Paintbrush.

Ok, these dates were suggested and no one has objected to May 22-27, so we are good to go with them.

I have always wanted to go here.....it is just a bit northeast of Pittsburgh, PA.  They have an event on July 15/6th.  With all the cool stuff to see on Saturday/Sunday....I doubt much riding would get done on those days!  Maybe riding could be done Wed, Thur, Friday.

I don't know if my house is on the route anybody needs to ride - but there is plenty of camping room (25 acres worth).

If you take the major interstate roads it is 6-1/2 hours from my house to Coolspring by the Mapquest schedule.  If I alter the route to the more scenic and less traveled highways - it becomes an 8 hour ride on the Mapquest schedule.  I would guess that on motorcycles that would likely be more in the 10-12 hour range with stops for fuel and other necessities.  Coolspring only operates the equipment on the 3rd weekend of the month....so it would have to be the July 15/16 weekend - which is also their big car and truck show.  I don't know if that makes it a more....or less desirable weekend to go look at the engines. We might want to postpone this adventure to a year we can go in a different month with less of a crowd.

:P

Sounds like 2 days up, one day there and two days back ..... just travel time, no sightseeing along the way

This is not a simple long weekend trip, unless you are MM on a SUPER IRON BUTT RUN .....

As a matter of fact, it is one FULL day BEYOND the end point of the "run up the Blue Ridge Parkway" trip that we all choked on last year.

Post retirement trip, I am afraid.

Coolspring might be something I should do with my wife.  My mother lives about 2 hours west of the area....and I could go visit her and take a day trip to Coolspring to see the engines.

I wouldn't have any problem going to the Kick Stand Lodge again in July.  Deals Gap has the "fiddies" racing on July 15th, and that might be fun.  The KSL is about 20 minutes away - so when we get tire of the nonsense at Deals Gap we can ride home.

I don't believe the July 15/16 event will be the Coolspring event....as that is a Car Show weekend at Coolspring and it is likely to be overly crowded.  (It might be better to choose a different month next year).

They are both good places :   Is it OK if I invite a couple of my CMA buds to join us on this one ?   Only one of them has ever been to the area and none of them ever been to the KSL or the BRMC .

Will either of these places let us have cabins for one night only ?

MM, you are inviting the guests so you pick the venue and the days.    Make sure Dave agrees with the dates you propose (he'll likely be putting in the changes)

Dave, I quit watching it close when I opted out of the Coolspring trip so I just plain flat didn't catch it morphing on the locations.

As I have mentioned, I have the MS flu on my machines at home (MS designed incompatibility issues) so I am hit and miss on posting ability right now.

So Dave, use them long moddy fingers and fix it up as needed if I am off line when planned changes come about.

I have changed the July event to be a potential Kick Stand Lodge visit....or perhaps a visit to the Blueridge Motorcycle Campground so we can go explore those roads.  There are some great roads in that area that we have been ignoring for too long.  It is just a bit too far away from the Dragon/Cherohala to make those areas conveniently accessible without a lot of highway riding - but the roads around Waynesville, Brevard, etc. are really nice roads.

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET COMPLETELY YET ....     I am still plugging in names as people show interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is going were plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

So far we got the following in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Youzguyz Twisted Sisters trip          Mid to Late April      NEED FIRM DATES      Youzguyz,  Springman,  Lancer

God's Acre / Fayetteville Ride      May 7-9     MM,  Oldfeller
Sunday - Tuesday ride to visit Oldfeller at Fayetteville NC and then going on Monday to an ancient Indian healing spring located at Healing Springs Road,  Blackville, South Carolina, 29817.   Arrival on Saturday or Sunday is good, Sunday afternoon arrival misses the Fayetteville tour stuff.

I hope we're all in this together !  :)

But if I bring a feller on an old Gold-Wing with a beard so long he tucks it into his belt to keep it out of the wind, then is that OK  ???  :-?

That's the guy with the beard not the old Wing !  :D

I have no problem with a GoldWing rider.....as long as he can stay in the saddle for a full day of riding in the twisties!

Are you going to try and trick him into following your GPS onto a gravel road? :o

Dave, we got Badwolf and MM talking about a Pike's Peak run June 25 which is half a country away and is not in conflict with other events.  Thread is MM's Big Tank thread.

Not sure if they are serious or not.   That is another of those mega events that isn't Savage specific.

Hmmm,  June 15 -18 at the KSL.... that is a week before the race.... very intersting.
Stuff gets rolling on the 22nd or the 23rd in PP.
Google maps say KSL to PP about 1400 miles, that's 3 easy days, Hmmmm....

OldFeller

After watching the clip of Pikes  Peak timed run ...  :-/ ... I'm not sure I'd even like to go up there .
No guard rails on a lot of it , and no scenery .   Just wide-open POWER-CLIMB , with a lot of AIR to catch ya if ya do anything wrong  !   ::)

I'd love to do the Denver thing with Versey but my calendar is just about filled up.

The month of June my wife is going to forget what I look like !  ;D
A ride with ya up in Dragon Country
two days at home , then
A week in W.V. for the CMA National East. (June 20-25)

The last part of August is all I have left to work with.  :P

BadWolf if ya need an Over-Nite spot on the way somewhere , the offer is still open !  ;)

But I suspect BadWolf can stay in the Saddle as long or longer as/than  I care too !     I might have logged up 15k miles last year but he is ... WAY ... beyond that !  :)

Being on a "work" day I'll have to take a personal day off to attend, but it shouldn't be a problem. I can get more details later on - thanks for the invite.

There doesn't seem to be much interest in the July event, and we have far more events listed than the 1 or 2 events we have on most years - perhaps we should not count on an event in July.

That might be a good month for me to do something (go somewhere) with my wife!

Mike, That clip is a last year's King of The Hill going under 9 mins. I think it is around 16 miles, so that is around 105 MPH AVERAGE speed! I for one will NOT be challenging that mark. I just want to watch those people fly up the mountain, and ride up and down on a different day at a tourist's pace. Sort of a bucket list thing.
In 02' I did 3 mountain 100 mile bicycle rides on a single speed road bike just to see if I could. I have never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer!
I'm thinking the KSL weekend of the 17-18th, then my sister's in western Ky, and 2 days to PP. Just have to have about 50 other things line-up and I'm ready to go.

BadWolf

it looked like that car was pushing its limits alright !  :o

I'm glad you got people scattered about the country .  8-)

Budget traveling is about to only way I get to go anywhere so I tend to "think" other folks are in the same boat.   So , having a free / safe place to overnight is something I'm always looking for .  ::)   So , in the interest of paying it forward , my offer stands.

I've got a buddy who took a week off work and rode his bicycle down the "Natchez Trace" (Nashville,Tn to Natchez,MS) and back (w/his bicycling buds).  Its 800+ miles round trip ... and lived to tell about it  !!!  ;D   So , my hat off to you and him !  :)

So if I took-off like that by myself and had some sort of problem , it would be good to have a ridding buddy to go for parts .

The CMA Eastern National Rally is in WV. the week after our KSL week anyway and I'm kinda committed to lead our local chapter to it so I'll have to miss PP this year ...  :-/   I believe both rides will be Fun !  ;)

I was kindly invited to the Lancer event in May, but I had a couple of questions please. Maybe I missed it, but after running through most of the replies I still don't know much about it. I did see "Henryetta" posted back on page 4 I believe. Is Lancers Ride in Henryetta? That would be nice...since I used to live there and still have family there. Also, would I be able to bring someone with me even if he rides a Honda Magna? Thanks.

Yes, I have a Henryetta address and live 8 miles SE of town just west of the Arbeka bridge.  The back of our property is on the North Canadian River; there is 70 acres here.
I am an Eslick, and my dads mother was a Minyard.  My dad was born in Henryetta and my mom in Okemah.  I have not made out a ride plan yet but will be doing so in a couple of months.
What is your name and family that still lives here ?

Oh, and yes, of course you can bring other folks with you.
It does not matter what they ride.

One of my brothers rode a  Magna V-65 for 10 years or more , he's got a 1200 Sportster Chopper now .  I can't see our Oklahoma ride being nothing like a Dragon Run but , He could make that Honda  keep up  , it couldn't do the turns as quick but that bike would make it up on the straights just fine.

Going back many years their were quite a few Swans, Fowlers, Kirkpatricks and Blacks. Right now it's down (that I know of) to a few Blacks and a couple of Swans. Most have moved away or passed on. I'm a Kirkpatrick and moved away many years ago, but still drive down from time to time. Actually planning to go down tomorrow and shop for a chair at Burnett's furniture store. Also planned to make it back home in time to pick up my new S40, but roads will probably still be covered in a salty slush from the snow we got last night.

Piedmontbuckeye, it really isn't far to one of the scheduled trips, the longest away is 2.5 hours from you and the shortest (Kickstand) is only about half of that distance.   You should ride up and meet the group and kick around the mountains some with us.   It's fun, as you already know.   I'd aim at the first day (arrival day) as we get gone for so much of the rest of the time.   Easiest meet up after that is dinner time and we'd have to tell you where we were going to eat that day by cell phone.

Santeetlah Lake Exploratory Trip   April 23, 24, 26   Oldfeller and MM

This is a free trip.    Cabin has been reserved by prepaying.   What is missing now are Savage.com people interested in the ride.   We still have 3-4 bed slots open.   Trip is now open to CMA riders and "other group" riders that you can personally vouch for.   Speaky speaky, don't be squeaky.

I'm kinda interested in the whole lake complex -- for a federal facility they seem to have their heads on straight as far as having 3 managed campgrounds, five (5) Ranger Stations and still having all those dozens of free "open to the first taker" camping places that we have been spotting on already.

I am curious as to if it is "by the person" or "by the tent space" at the three full service campgrounds?   We could make us some cost advantage using a big tent if it is by the tent space.   I also want to know if there is a shower at one of the payme campgrounds in the complex.   Yes, see below.

So, we are proposing April 23, 24, 26 ???

I found another free site with a toilet facility.   It is actually on the Cherohola Skyway side of Santeetlah Lake.  https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recreation/horseriding-camping/recarea/?recid=48924&actid=29

http://68.media.tumblr.com/c75a8b9d22bf6d623bb3b3483f93dc61/tumblr_inline_mwd511lTPB1rpjlkw.jpg

I also see mention of 2 cabins that you can put up to six people into each at a cost of $35 per cabin a night.  That is dirt cheap compared to where we have been staying.

https://www.recreation.gov/camping/cheoah-point-cabin-2/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=75479     YES, there is an open to all campers shower facility 150 feet from Cabin #1 (and Cabin #2, but slightly further away).   You can book this place on line, makes it easy to do.

https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/nfsnc/recreation/horseriding-camping/recarea/?recid=48928&actid=29     Here is another map that shows the town with a satellite shot.

Costs     FREE TRIP -- cabin costs already paid for

Next, there is a tiny little town actually out in the lake that is named Santeetlah, apparently it was a town in the area before the lake was filled in and wound up with water on three sides out on a peninsula.   It is still a tiny incorporated town made up mostly of rich people's lake homes that is showing up on the map above.

Yes, we can spend some time poking around and find a range from free to cheap places for future use and we may actually maybe find someplace worth calling "home base" for a larger group run.

I bet these two cabin places gets booked up a year in advance on the summer weekends.   Weekdays, not so likely.    ::)

Cabin #2 - there is room for an additional small tent if you want but it can not be set up on the grass (only within the gravel pad). So it does make the eating area a bit cramped. Nice view of the lake but a longer walk to your car and the bathroom.    I also see a fire pit and firewood .....

http://https://s3.amazonaws.com/storage.filemobile.com/storage/18547854/13   Bathrooms and shower are up at the start of the small paved path.

I'm gonna hold this to 1 week vaca, so I can have 2 weeks for MMRanch and possibly another week late july for Denver.

So I'll arrive sunday, leave saturday.

Well that's nearly the exact same drive for me as it is to the Dragon, just driving through N AL versus N GA.

Put me down for the MM Farm September ride. Schedule permitting at the time I think I can probably swing this one.

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION RIGHT UP TO THE GO DAY -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET COMPLETELY YET UNTIL IT IS OVER.     I am still plugging in names as people show interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is really going plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

So far we got the following in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a firm date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Youzguyz Twisted Sisters trip          Mid to Late April      NEED FIRM DATES      Youzguyz, try putting a firm date on your event and see if any of the people will come back ......

Santeetlah Lake Exploratory Trip   April 23, 24, 26   Charles,  Kent,  MM,  Oldfeller

This is a free trip.    Cabin has been reserved by prepaying.    We still have 2 bed slots open.   Trip is now open to CMA riders and "other group" riders that you can personally vouch for.   We are staying in a six man log cabin at the junction of Tapco Rd (Dragon road) and the Cherohola Skyway just outside of Robbinsville.

Indian Paintbrush Campground in Ty Denver  Late July  NEED FIRM DATES   Verslagen,  Springman,  old.indian, Thumperclone

Undefined East Coast July slot           July 15-16
This is an empty time slot looking for a neat event to center upon.   Several have been proposed, but not much in the way of takers.   Will be reviewed again in April in hopes of a really neat idea cropping up.

Here's the info again.  originally this was a explore and go to a junkyard run.
For me it's 15hr run to get there, and I need a base camp to park my truck.
there are a lot of free campsites too.  https://freecampsites.net/#!Denver,+CO,+United+States
I'm thinking late july now.

Mike, we got us a Santeetlah trip with 3 or more people .....    and you can still bring your wife if you want to trailer in a bike.     Tell her about the little "pretty mountain tourist town that got stuck out in the middle of the lake" and unhook the trailer and give her the car and let her go shopping there and in Robbinsville and Franklin.    We will tell her she is responsible for finding the neat little places for us to eat for dinner -- she seems to like that.

We are not going rip-tearing anyway, I have a bigger bike to break in now that isn't really suitable for peg dragging and this is a casual sort of trip as planned.

You don't want to be picking up a Barcalounger or a Goldwing up out of a ditch anyway  --  they are jest too durn heavy to lift.   My goal is to not scuff up my new saddle bags.
Better to leave them up on two wheels and just use the side stand.

Weather looks plumb beautiful .....

Went looking on the internet for multiple switchbacks ....

http://devilstriangletn.com/

http://www.thedevilnc80.com/about80.html

Shame Lancer doesn't remember where that mountain blackline was ....

We actually stayed on Hwy 80 near Little Switzerland once (foggy foggy night) and ran it like 6 times, nice, but it is not what we are trying to find again.   Hwy 32 was a better curvy road than that one anyway ....

In any case that blackline switchback was on the Blue Ridge Campground side of things when we found it, and this trip is on the Robbinsville side of things.   Different side of the up high world actually.

Sad thing is that road was paved only on one side right up to a state or a county line, so THAT gives us a clue where to look when we are over on Blue Ridge side again.

Hay check this out ...

One year we was up near Mt.Mitchell and one of us didn't have enough gas to run up to the top of Mitchell .
So , we went down the next exit off the parkway ... to Marion to buy fuel.   That road was NC-80 ,   It is a SUPER ROAD !
Now , it has its own NAME :

http://www.thedevilnc80.com/about80.html

So , One-of-Our-Riders ... who likes to pass Hogs ...  ::) ... passed two of them on the way down the Mountain .  One of them was ridding double and seem ok with being "Over-taken"  ... The other was a solo rider on a Big High $$- HD Soft-tail who sped-up (as in "not to be passed by a Gremlin on a single cylinder Motorcycle ).
I passed the Ridding double bike and waved at them friendly like then followed the Big $$ HD , till he swapped ends with it on one of the 145 deg. down-hill coves.   I might have stoped to help him but he was not very FRIENDLY-LOOKING and was shouting something at our guy he was trying to catch !  :P

It was a inside corner and there was a landing spot for the feller , And he did jump-right up (Screaming something ,kinda mad like)   ;D

Anyway , the speed limit is 55 mph on a Dragon type road ... Its a fun place to be !  :)

Well finally I can prove it wasn't me.

I went all the way to the top of Mount Mitchell with the group and it snowed on us while we were up there, and we all stopped and drank hot chocolate together.   MM still has his in his hand, as a matter of fact.   I even took a pic of the snow falling on the group at the elevation sign at Mount Mitchell.

http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/DSCF00154.JPG

As that was the furthermost we were going to go on that road together, we split up at that point and then we rode home separately in two completely separate directions.

Crucial question becomes was I physically present whenever this poor benighted Hurley person dumped his bike on the ground?

No, I wasn't there, now was I ???   I was all the way across the parking lot on foot when they departed, taking a photo of the group of Hurleys that were leaving -- a shot that btw includes my PARKED cold engine Granny sickle way on off to the right of the shot.

http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/DSCF00256.JPG

Well then, who was always present when the Hurley went down in all these cases ???

.....  MM

   ::)

I think seeing a line of Savagers coming up behind them obviously planning to take turns passing these poor egotistical Hurley dudes might give them a case of temporary insanity, it makes them think they can mebbe go fast enough to keep from being passed when in fact they cannot even make it around the next turn.

You see, I am always long long gone around the next set of curves by then and they have no delusions about being able even see me, much less catch up with me -- however they will apparently choose to commit Hurley Kury rather than let MM go past them.

Think on it a bit, why MM ????

Rather than being sucked along by the instantaneous vacuum suction action of my going past them 5 minutes ago on a Savage running at full speed, they instead are being slowly mentally harassed and egotistically harried and psychologically pushed along by something  -- they are being mentally pushed along from behind into committing a foolish act of ritual motorcycle seppuku.

And what exactly do they think that might make them choose to NOT PERMIT MM go on past them???   He's riding on a Hurley just like theirs and they can ride as fast as any Hurley up there, right?   They know can't compete with specialty bikes like that snarling Granny sickle that just blew right on past them, but they will be switched if they will let a stock Hurley go on past them too.

A nice road going up and then at the top the nice smooth pavement just stopped, then rocky dirt on the way down.  I remember that particular road. [ch128521]

But where was it?   We were based out of Blue Ridge Campground and you spotted the road on the 3-D terrain map in the break room early that morning.

Now Lancer is somebody else who might remember some of these Hurley incidents and who was actually present when some of them occurred as he generally was #2 or #3 in riding order on the earlier trips.

I remember standing by the door and looking at that 3-D map on the wall, but did not remember being the one who suggested that road.

I remember we took the map off the wall and studied it carefully looking for the road a few years later, but some kids had rubbed the paint off of all the mountain tops so we couldn't find it although we looked for it specifically.

You do realize your "fast Harley" guy passed several of his own people to get in front of the porkchop pack, so he is at least as wrist guilty as any of us.

;)       ..... passed his own people, who would DO a thing like that ? .....       ::)

That's fine if your CMA folks want to wait until the last minute, if we fill the cabin up before then we will know about it -- if not then any latecomers will have an upper bunk bed rack space still available.

Make sure your guys do know there is no bedding at all in these .gov cabins any more and they need an air mattress and at least a summer sleeping bag and a cuddly fleece blanket to stay warm.

Wellll.. that is what I call it.

It runs between 335 and 336 (two of the three sisters) and has very nice paved roads on both ends... and 8 miles of some sort of nasty dirt, creek bead, gravel, bump gates, etc in the middle.

Both he and Gene Simmons (Kiss) did the weird makeup thing as a publicity gimmick, both of them did hard Rock music and the visual show to please the fans was the thing for them.   The Kiss guy had that long devil tongue that he loved to lizard out into the air to make all the girlies scream.

Bear, devil tongued Sister, or whatever,  a whack or three with the razor sharp half axe will teach them not to be coming into my tent late at night.

I hope that was the cause for poor bat life.

Santeetlah Lake Exploratory Trip   April 23, 24, 26   Charles,  Kent,  Jeb,  MM,  Oldfeller

This is a free trip.    Six Man Cabin has been reserved by prepaying for two nights.    We still have some floor space open in the cabin.   Trip is now open to CMA riders and "other group" riders that you can personally vouch for.   We are staying in a six man log cabin on the lake itself near the junction of Tapco Rd (Dragon road) and the Cherohola Skyway -- outside of Robbinsville, NC.

Just a reminder about the Oklahoma ride at the end of May, we have acres and acres of camping areas and also two rooms that are available if anyone wants to camp indoors.  I don't recall anyone requesting one of them but if you did then remind me please.

You guys need to be talking about who is bringing tents, etc.

I think Lancer's farm may be the biggest get together this year and as such you guys need to plan it on out a bit.

Justin needs to firm up if he is coming or not.   If he is firmly coming, then I will try harder to go too as otherwise I think I will likely never actually see Justin in this lifetime.   Everybody else I will see several times, I think.

Anybody interested in visiting Shanteea lake campground next Monday and Tuesday , ride in Monday - ride home Wednesday .

If it don't look good there is always the Dragon Campground (we know its nice).

MM.....I can't yet go on weekdays - that pesky work schedule gets in the way.  When you plan these events for weekdays with very short notice you really limit the ability for us working folks to attend.

I checked the web site and facebook for the Kickstand Lodge - I don't see anything that shows they are open for business yet this year.  Their bunkhouse is $15 a night (each).....and I bet it is much warmer/drier than sleeping in a tent.

Dept. is short a person right now and is not being allowed to do any overtime or to hire another person.   So we spread thin and do more work in the allotted hours ......

We got the Kickstand trip coming up next month and I do have the  time off already laid out for it.   I figure that we can ride by Santeetlah during those day trips to check it out.

No, it is good that you asked.   I thought about it and I am now taking off the 11th through the 19th, combining my normal days off on two separate weeks with 5 days of vacation.

Kickstand doesn't start until the 13th so if you wanted to go bedroll on the ground at Santeetlah a day early we could do that.

Now this is my current theoretical thinking, my big bike is tall enough and plenty solid enough to support one side of a lean to.

Only purpose of the lean to is to keep the light rain or dew off of you while you are sleeping.  Tarp is the same thing I use to wrap the sleeping bag for waterproofing so that rides with me anyways.    Ride up to the free camping spot, gage the prevailing direction of the wind and set the bike up so a sudden breeze doesn't blow it over on you.   Attach and stake the tarp cover down, set the air mattress and bag up, go to sleep.

In any case, everybody all say when you are thinking about showing up at Kickstand so we can all be consistent on the show up day at Kickstand.   Leaving can be raggedy, but show up needs to be consistent with the man driving the trailer with the big tent inside it.

so if you wanted to go bedroll on the ground at Santeetlah a day early we could do that.

I cot if possible , but can do the air-mat if needed.  I have two tents :
1.   8 x 10 x 72"
2.   8 x 8 x 56"
either one fits nicely under the triple tree , the small one is thicker and stronger.   The oldest one is only 3 years old .

I slept under a lean-to tarp on the way to Texas last year and it worked good.   I stopped at the Texas welcome center and trucks and RVs were camping for the night so I pulled off the main area (behind a tree , sorta) , and did just what you (OldFeller) said.   Tarp (8x10) pegged to the ground and tied it to the bike.   Woke-up the next morning to the sound of a weedeater in the distance.  Yea , had a dusk to dawn nap !  :)

I've got a motion detector and buzzer combo from Harbor Freight.  The buzzer sleeps under my pillow when I sleep on top of it.  ;)

Thanks for the invite badwolf   :)

Our CMA group has a ride Saturday .

June 12 , (a day early) ... Let us hope the weather is on our side this time !  ::)

I've been ridding the Suzuki just about everywhere during the last month and it seems to be running GREAT.   I haven't had the Harley cranked up unless the wife want to go (seat is longer).

That little China speedometer I first put on the S-40 went crazy after only 2584kms , so I had to replace it.  So , now the Suzuki has a metric Honda Rebel speedometer , it looks good and my bike is extreamly low mileage again !  ;D    But the speedometer and the GPS agree on how fast the ground is rolling by , even with the 25 tooth front pulley !   :)

For those of you in the Dragon area, be careful on this 4 lane stretch of 28 south of Kickstand Lodge headed southbound towards 74.
https://www.google.com/maps/@35.3859895,-83.5787364,16.44z

I was clocking along about 65mph and all of a sudden the bike started getting VERY loose and I thought I had a low tire so I stopped and checked everything before I had an accident. Kinda scared me for a minute.  There were visible tar snakes but they rarely give me any issue, but apparently they are the mean tar snakes.  After I caught up with my two friends on big, heavy Harley's with fat tires they said they got thrashed around too and it got their attention real quick but they kept on going.

So...just be aware of that 4 lane section of road and don't hit it too fast and hard.  I think the left lane is a bit better so maybe avoid the right lanes if you can or at least slow down.

Stew:

I had that issue with the little Ninja in GA last year.  The little Ninja would be leaned over in a curve, and get really unstable on them.  I believe they were filled with a rubberized joint/crack filler....and it stands above the surface and it flexes when you run over it.  It wasn't bad on the straight sections - but it was scary in the corners.

I might have to leave Saturday after breakfast ...  ::)

I checked out the Santeetlah lake area Wednesday  .
I found the free camp sites , all are right on the lake.
I found the pay ($15.oo -or- $7.50 w/discount) camps w/running water real showers and real bathrooms.
I found the $35.oo cabins , they use the same bath houses as the $7.50 camp sites.   Cabins have two rooms , one with a FULL size platform for sleeping bags and one w/bunk bed stacked  and then a nice porch (sleeps two).

OK, with you having seen them, tell us which are worth having and which are not worth having.

Next, did you see any restrictions on using the showers, or are they "free for all campers" like the free camping site said?

And lastly, since you came and you saw already -- do you want to do the day early or jest let it go as unneeded at this point.

I can get what info I need from you very easily, or if it is good enough to have Dave and the whole kickstand group to go take "a look see" while going past it.  We can all go together at one time and you can be the tour guide.

OK.  Sounds like no one has a big challenge on this other than maybe MM.  I'll have to check and see what my siblings have planned for pops. Likely I could need to leave out late Saturday night (after riding for the day has commenced) or early Sunday morning.  Don't count me out, just may have to lose out on riding any on Sunday.

So long as the weather holds out we're good to go .  8-)

It took me 4.5 hours to come home last time I was there , but it was fast ridding on the super slab (no fun at all )

I'd rather take the 6 hr. way ... so , if I got to  Dragon Central about 15:00 hrs.   Then we would be at our camp-site before 16:00hrs.

I've got a lifetime discount for the National parks and Federal Recreation Lands , its called the "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL"  Lifetime Pass.   Anyway the regular $ is $15.oo / discount is 50%.  There is a # that needs to be on the camp-site payment envelop ... if we stay for 5 days ... that # will save us $37.50  ;)  so wait till I get there to claim a spot . :) , there are two bath houses (equally nice) , if we had a cabin too there are two camp-sites near the cabins

Anybody going on this trip , your welcome to park your tow vehicle or just overnight in Lynchburg .   I'd like to have a member in the West Memphis area offer me the same deal on the way to Lancers tomorrow .

Mike, us old people we like to get confused with our trips sometimes, so bear with me a bit.

Kickstand is the main trip, Dave's trip -- June 13th - 18th -- at Kickstand Lodge with all the overeager younger people who are coming to rip up and tear up the mountains.

I was just going to be sneaking away for a "one day early to check out Santeetlah" but you have already done that to a tee already --  to the point you are maybe plotting out longer trips to Santeetlah already and are figuring out the discounts already based on your America the Beautiful thing.

And $7.50 for a Dave sized tent slam full of people is the best price going for good toilets and showers that we have found I do believe.   Needs to be looked at by Dave though.

Naw, 100% free is the best price going -- I wanted to see what those places were like.

That's all to the good, and it is good that the place is good enough for you to be thinking of it in a longer term way.   You need to plan to show it to Dave and the boys sometimes during the Kickstand trip when we are all over that a way.

=================

Mike, I have gotten 10 years older all of a sudden and I am a real life old man now.   My right knee is for the shits now and I take pain meds and limp everywhere lately.  And my prostate has begun acting up to the point I take 3 drugs for it all the time and am on a list for eventual prostate surgery.   I pee a lot, sitting down or into a cup, makes no difference to me as I have gotten pretty good at the cup trick in the last year.

I am not bringing the Savage, I am riding the Barcalounger simply because my knee likes it better once I am up sitting on it.  I am not coming to tear up the mountains, I am simply too old for that now.  I may ride up and just rest quietly for a day at one of the back of the lake freebee spots, pick me out one with a picnic table near a shitter station on the quiet backside of the lake (if such a thing actually exists).   A soft air bed and a simple mosquito netted enclosure to sleep in are all I really desire more than anything else.

;)

Tell you what -- I'll spot you a burger at the Hub or somewhere else down in Robbinsville when you arrive, or dinner as the case may be.   I am not interested in sitting around at the Dragon Lodge Cafe as that involves waiting around at the noisy Hurley infested Dragon for you to arrive -- cell phones do work down in Robbinsville so you can just call me when you get there.

Did you think to check for cell phone service out at Santeetlah Lake?   Six miles out from town in the mountains, maybe tower service and maybe not ....

KSL Comments:  June 14-18:

Oldfeller.....sorry to hear you are having health issues that make you uncomfortable.  I am bringing the big tent, and at I suppose I need to take head count to see who is going to be there.  (MM, Stewmills, OF, Badwolf, Dave, Ralieghguy).  The tent will sleep 4 folks reasonably well inside as long as the air mattress/cots don't take up too much room, and there is a screened room on one end that is good for sleeping if the weather is dry.  If we get full in the tent - I can go sleep in my trailer without issue....it is nice and comfy.

Last year I set the megatent up in a place that provided nice shade so the tent didn't get sun during the day, and it had a nice flat area and it was in a remote area that is quiet if they get too rowdy at the campfire last at night.  The only downside of the camping area - it is a long way from the bath house and toilets.  If we can't find a place to set up the tent nearer to the bathroom - you might want to consider staying in the bunkhouse at $22 a night.  It has beds that won't require you to sleep on the ground, and the bunkhouse is on one end of the bath house - so you will have a very short walk to the bathroom.

Overeager younger people.......This may be the only trip I get to the area this year, and I am hoping the weather will permit riding all day.  I want to ride 28 south down into GA, take Warwoman west and ride to the Two Wheel in for lunch.....then continue north to Tellico Plains, and then ride the Cherohala Skyway back to the east.....this is nearly a 300 mile trip.

I want to ride south of Sylva on 107 to 281 (Canada Road) to Lake Toxaway......it was  great curvy road that where we met that couple on the Harley from Canada - nice paving and very little traffic.  (Not sure where to go after that....last time we rode though Cashiers and we got to see a bear run across the highway, and from there we road into Highlands and that are has some really nice roads that sometimes are crowded with tourists).

And the KSL is located on 28, and it is a very nice curvy 15 minute ride up to the Dragon!  It is always nice to start or end the day with a trip on the Dragon!

So....if anyone wants to be added to the list - it sounds like we will have 2 riding groups for you to choose from.  Tents can be added as needed without reservation, and it appears the bunkhouse usually has extra space - cabins rent fast so if you want one you better call and get one reserved.

Somebody call and lock in the weather - so far it looks perfect!

Dave, I am planning on getting there late in the evening Wed or Thurs. Plan on staying in the bunkhouse. Wont disturb you guys with late night potty trips. Will leave Sun afternoon. Would like to get over to Mt. Mitchell and Ceasers Head if possible, but am willing to poke along wherever the slower group goes.
Mid 80's and high 50's don't sound so bad.

Here is the miracle of cell phones and GPS -- if I get tired I can just point towards home base.

I assume there is a picnic table involved, but won't know until we get there.   I am bringing my camp chair with me.

Who knows?  It may be me staying inside the trailer if I get too noisy again to be good sleeping company.

;)

If anyone sleeps in the trailer.....it needs to be done discreetly.  The KSL website states that anything you tow behind your "Cage" and sleep in is an RV....and it is $38 a night!  My car/trailer was not parked in the tent area, it was in a gravel parking area pretty far away from the tent - but it still was within walking distance of the bathroom.

Note correction on the dates, we had the 13th listed as the start date all along but now Dave has corrected that to Wednesday the 14th as the correct start date.

So far we got the following items left in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a firm date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Lancer Oklahoma trip    extended to 19-28 May   Lancer,  Kenny G,  MM,  Springman,  Verslagen,  Justin,  Springman's BIL Steve,

Kickstand Lodge   June 14-18    Dave,  Oldfeller,  MM,  Stewmills,  RaleighGuy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZGNOB5m5Ro&t=166s
http://kickstandlodge.com/rates.html
From here it is a short hop up to the Dragon, and to all the really neat surrounding roads we love to ride.    For East Coast beginners, this is one of the closest (and the BEST) Southeastern trip possible.   Some have argued the area is the BEST BIKING IN AMERICA and I might have to agree with them.

We also have a 1 day (2 man) prequel of sorts planned on June 12th with Oldfeller and MM going and checking out the Santeetlah Lake free camping, since until you have actually done it you really can't speak to it pro or con.

Indian Paintbrush Campground in Ty Denver  Late July  NEED FIRM DATES   Verslagen,  Springman,  old.indian, Thumperclone

MM's farm     Sept 8, 9 & 10    MM,  Oldfeller,  Dave,  Lancer,  StewMills

And here is a tool to use in locating some no cost camping when travelling to get to the rides:

The actual start date for Kickstand Lodge is somewhat negotiable.....I may be able to leave a day or two early if the weather shows a reason to do so.....sunny days early in the week and wet days at the end - and I might just shift my arrival and departure accordingly.  I wouldn't want to hang around and sleep in a wet tent if the last few days are going to be really wet!

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Oldfeller on 05/23/17 at 03:44:54

Dave, don't feel pressured into starting early as Badwolf is staying in the Bunkhouse and MM and I will have somewhat rougher Santeetlah lodgings for the day(s) prior.   The rest of the guys need to get a wake up call to come on in to a GET READY thread to do a Roll Call.   We will simply keep Wednesday as the start point until somebody dials in that wants earlier.

It is likely we will all fit into your tent just fine.  MM sleeps on a cot and carries a tarp that can make the "addition section" rain proof if needed.   If not, then I'll take it as my tarp and air mattress mean I'll never touch the ground either.

Title: Re: Savage Events for 2017
Post by Dave on 05/23/17 at 05:05:18

Oldfeller:

It is not a "pressure" that would make me come early.....as I would just head directly to the KSL and spend the time exploring on my own until other folks arrived.  My point is that if the weather turns out to be better in the beginning of the week and rainy at the end.....I would choose to come and ride the days that are dry, and leave when the rain came (and take my tent with me).  I really don't enjoy riding in the rain.  This could have an affect on the lodging arrangements if anyone decided to stay and ride in the rain - but it sounds like you and MM will have a tent form the Santeetlah camping portion, Badwolf is staying in the bunkhouse....and I am sure Stewmills would stay in the bunkhouse if he decided to stay for the rainy days.  (Not sure what Ralieghguy is doing....he hasn't weighed in yet).

And....if the weather turns out to be crappy at the beginning of the week - I might not come until late in the week and stay on past the 18th (I do have to be back for an evening meeting on the 21st).

Dave

You can see why I am exploring the Santeetlah Lake as with MM's magic card we could all stay in your big tent for $7.50 a day for all of us, near the showers & the toilets.   And with Robbinsville very nearby (6 miles) to go eat at, complete with a Public Library and movies to go lounge & get AC'd.

Kickstand is kinda sorta in the same neighborhood price-wise as Cabin #4 at Blue Ridge Campground.  Kickstand wants $20 per night for the tent and tent owner, then an additional $5.00 per each extra person staying in the tent ($20-25) and God help you if somebody actually slept in the trailer (full $38 RV rates for that one).

DODGING THE WEATHER, showing up early or staying later has no $$$ penalty at the Santeetlah, $7.50 a day flat rate if you put up the big tent near the showers and bathrooms, free if you take one of the lakeside primitive spots and piss in the bushes.  I am going to ride on up on Monday and spot out the best of the lakeside primitive free spots and stay there until MM shows up.

And as always, what we think it is always winds up being slightly different from what it really is, so  until we do this trip I won't really know for sure.

MM does, because he's been there already.

I've doubled up on my knee joint meds and the knees are responding and getting better, so I may not be a crip so much in a couple of weeks.

One thing about the KSL that is really nice, is the amenities and security.  You can leave your cell phone or laptop plugged in to a wall socket, and there is little chance that anyone would bother it.  The KSL has free laundry, free towels and washcloths in the bath house - and free bike wash so you can wash rabbit guts off MM's bike!

I really don' mind spending $20 each a night to be comfortable.

MM,

Naw, just some future chat with Dave about trip costs, that's all.   Net diff between Santeetlah and Kickstand is paying $10 more a day at Kickstand for meal rights and fluffy towels so it isn't a major chunk of money in any case.  Learn by doing is the name of the game.

I'm going to sneak on up into Santeetlah on Monday June 12th and if/when you call me on Monday/Tuesday from Robbinsville cell tower service I'll meet up with you.

The Kickstand trip officially starts a day later now on Wednesday, June 14th instead of the 13th, so that is a little small change from the last time you looked in.   We now have an extra day available for screwing around some.

How was your trip out into Lancer land?   Shoot anything interesting?  Rested up a bit and now all rarin' to go again in a couple more weeks ??

Ready to join the soon to be long long list of folks who got run over by a big black fuffy lounge chair?

Just a head's up that might be pertinent to your "which campground" conversations --  my wife and I stayed the last three nights at a place in Elk Park, NC.  Granted it's farther north and east than you have been looking, but I can tell you it's a perfect little spot for 6-8 campers.  And the riding here is wonderful.  IMO, very similar to where you are looking, but less traffic.

Very private, very secure, very gracious hosts.  Just one bathroom/shower, but extremely clean.  Plenty of space for tents, campfire, shelter if it rains, etc.

Here's a Facebook link to check it out, and I'm available to give details if your interested.

Here is a picture of a dam w/lots of water we saw on my first day (Tuesday).   Its not far from Lancers house.   I was surprised at how much water there was in the area.   Rolling hill ... kinda like Texas with/out the sand !   ;D
So... in Tennessee here the land is kind-of bunched up into hills running North to South and it seems the land in Oklahoma is pushed up too.   In Lancers area there is a more equal mix of not so high rolling hill.  But just a little east and ya run into the mountains ,
will pick-up with the next picture ...  ::)
