This is page 42 on Wheel of Grace Magazine if the link don't work ?

Any body in Montana been here ---

OldFeller , this place might put the Dragon to shame  69 miles long !     Just looking at the picture makes me want to go ride it !  ::)

So umm, when are we going?

By the way, other other places on page 42 look pretty good also.

MM, I get blood blisters on my butt just by thinking about trekking all the way just to get to Montana.

Dave's place has shown us we don't have to go so far out to have a good time.   Your farm was a good trip as well.

Bear Tooth Highway....."Well known for it's thunderstorms and high winds, Beartooth Highway has even seen snow storms during the summertime."

What part of that description is appealing to you MM? :-?

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 09/01/16 at 06:30:34

The very Name is just appealing. What kinda place is so harsh that bears lose their teeth? Did the wind wobble those lips until they flew out? What happened to the Rest of the bears? Is there a Bear Skulls road? I have Some, limited experience with bear bones existence... but, once the unemployment benefits ran out, I was doing Great!

Post by springman on 09/01/16 at 08:15:06

Heck, I just want to see if we run across any toothless bears. ;D

But a ride over to MM's place sounds good to me also.

Verslagen,

That Indian would be a great hunting machine, but I wish they would put an adequate front fender on it. Little PeeWee fenders just don't do the job.

I can absolutely guarantee that back fender isn't going to do the job either.  Any wet roads and you are going to have water thrown up your backside big time!

Regardless of fender deficiencies, that is one beautiful machine.

It would work just fine.....as long as the roads are dry! 8-)

Dave,

Not to get too far off of the subject, but have you had any luck with finding a "Fender Extender"?

Kenny G

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by Dave on 09/01/16 at 18:04:24

I "finally" got the fender extender for the NT700.  I am not  a bit impressed with the folks that are the importer for the product.  I bought the item through eBay, and waited for a few weeks before I contacted them, as I had not heard anything from them.  Somehow they misplaced the order.  They took weeks and weeks and a few more weeks to get it to me.  They had to order it from the UK, and evidently it had to come with a box full of other stuff.

The end result was the fender extender for the NT700 didn't come close to working on the Savage....and as bad as they are at Customer Service, I  am pretty sure they wouldn't be very helpful in trying to help us find one that would work on the Savage.

Post by KennyG on 09/01/16 at 20:05:28

Dave,

That is too bad, I was hoping for a simple solution to keeping the front of the engine and me clean.

I wonder if we could graft a part of another Savage/S40 fender to the existing fender?

Bear tooth might be an August ride .    Surely we have a member in Montana (some where)  :-? .

It would be nice to have an event or two in my neighborhood when ya'll come visiting !  ;)    I'll keep my senors out.

That bike night thing Thursday near Dave's was great , then BBQ Friday in Ohio ,   We don't have much to compete with those two.
We do have live music at some of our restaurants sometimes  , and a bike rally on 9-11 weekend , ... I've just about used-up my trips for this year but we should start on next year soon as winter sets in !  ::)

I like the way beartooth winds around the mountain in the picture , but --- we need somebody in the area to check it out for  us .   :)

North entrance....Go south of Billings and I-90 on highway 212 through Red Lodge (MT). About 15 minutes south of town you go UP! way up to nearly 11,000 feet. Extreme road. About 2 hrs later after going over the top and down a even narrower south decent into Wyoming, you can go West into Yellowstone Park on 212 through Cook City, or East to Cody on the Chief Joseph scenic Highway, and it is nearly as good as the Beartooth! From the East do yourselves a favor and come from Sheridan over the Bighorn Mountains(another great route!). Suggest if going South to forget Yellowstone Park and go east! Fantastic mountain route. If you gotta see the park..Turn around at Sheridan and go back in on 14 through Cody. Don't miss these roads! - See more at: http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/356/Montana/Beartooth-Pass.html#sthash.5fiOZCuS.dpuf

Was reading the reviews on Bear-Tooth --- the only way I could afford to do a trip like this would involve a lot of camping .

Anybody in the black-hills area have tent spots available ?

::)

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by springman on 09/02/16 at 21:06:57

I agree with you MM, camping it would be. We need to start planning rides for next year. I would like to do at least 2 rides. July fourth week is already taken for me. It appears I will be in Orlando that week.

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by MMRanch on 09/02/16 at 21:32:18

There is free camping along the Natchez trace (3-one on each end and one in the middle).

from my place deals gap is a one easy day there and $20.oo tent sight , then one easy day to Dave's ,  .     I like those 6 hour day rides over those 12 hour rides.      :P

I need a ride in April or May ,  in June there will be a CMAUSA National Rally , then in August there will be a CMAUSA State Rally ,

I'd like a 5-10 day ride but don't want to get that far from home without a second biker for back-up.    The Black-Hills area is on my bucket list !  ::) , but that "above-the-tree-line" stuff makes me think August --- that is also Sergis SD. time with lots of camp-ground in the area. ???  :-?

Ain't no shortage of places to go , its just planning the logistics and then just GO !  ;D

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by springman on 09/02/16 at 22:22:02

Ideally June, July and August are my best bets for taking off. Other times are doable but not certain for me. Where are your CMA rallies going to be?

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by Oldfeller on 09/03/16 at 03:52:01

Dave and MM's farms are group spoilers, to be sure.   We need to include a trip back to one of them next year, certainly.

Next issues you will have to deal with is RAIN PREDICTIONS and vacation time off.

Several of us (myself included) generally need to take vacation during summer recess (June July first two weeks in August).   To say anything else is to quietly cut down on the folks who can actually come.   Very early in the summer is cooler, but this also tends to throw you more into conflict with that 'ol debble RAIN.

Example, I had to miss a football game to go to Dave's and this was unheard of at work (I got an exception due to a mgmt schedule shift which resulted in my late vacation time).   I am told it will not happen again, even if I do schedule it months in advance.

Planning group motorcycle trips devolves on to the folks who are going, and I think our days of big 10-12 people trips is pretty much over now.   So, bluntly, plan next year's trips to suit the people who say they are going ..... then jest do it.

So from Lynchburg to Henryetta ~640 miles
Henryetta to Ogallala ~660 miles
Ogallala to Red Lodge ~570 miles
to ride 50 miles?

Be a shame not to visit yellerstone and see yogi.

June, July, early August tends to work for me also. Generally speaking if I have a couple of months heads up I can get the dates that I want off.

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by MMRanch on 09/03/16 at 21:46:58

Yea , Versey  I might have to wait till I really retire to do a 1900 mile ride (one way )  .    400 miles a day (ish) so 10 day round trip ... I would have to play catch-up on chores for a month !     I lack about a week more to make up for the 5 days I took off for Dave's trip , but it was well worth it !  :)

I'm certainly interested, but it is more if I can get away from work.  That is the challenging part for me.  Two years ago I did a 3K trip and had a wonderful time and this year unfortunately it was a no go.   I tentatively start the plan and see how it goes...  This is a nice little spreadsheet I use to estimate the costs.  I don't think we can attach excel files so here is a snap shot.

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by verslagen1 on 12/15/17 at 21:18:07

I looked at m/c roads and if we stay at red lodge, beartooth hwy is it.
But if we stay in Cody there's 4 different loops to go on.
1. cody via chief joesph to beartooth to redlodge about 115 miles.
2. cody to yellerstone 100 miles
or 2 more roads towards little big horn for 150 miles each.
so 2 to 300 day rides.

and a cabin for 4 at $66
http://www.codyponderosa.com/rates/rates.html

restaurants, museums and I'm sure there's a hospital for jog.   ;D

While in Cody, you might as well spend a good half day going to the museum.   8-)

If I could meet ya in Cody sometime , then are you thinking August ?

Perhaps I could meet-up with SpringMan somewhere along the way , and maybe a few others ?

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by verslagen1 on 12/17/17 at 20:58:38

I checked the mileage to Cody, it's about the same as going to Lancer's.
So maybe you can stop and pick him up if he wants to go.
Just whip out your almanac and figure out when to go.
http://www.usa.com/cody-wy-weather.htm
august looks like a good time to go.

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by MMRanch on 12/17/17 at 21:14:38

I would be ridding the bike and leaving the truck home.  But If Lancer is willing to hold the luggage ... we can ride double !  ;D

I hear mention of picking up Lancer, on the way to Yellowstone to see Yogi Bear ----- is this the Black Hills trip thread?

MM, if you are riding I will ride as well.   Barcalounger can carry a lot of your stuff if you are going to be riding double with Lancer   All it takes is rope ......

Cody , and Bear Tooth could be on the way to the Black Hills  ::)

Seems like they are closer together than from here to either one ,,,

Versey ,
If we meet in Cody this August and ride a couple days then we'd still have the Black Hills for next year ?   Cody isn't but one days ride from Lancers is it ?

What's the chance of us getting a tour guide in the Cody area ?

It's been awile since I've been there, but I wouldn't mind making the trip again.  I'll have to see how things work out at work.....My coworker and her Hubby usually take a couple of weeks for Sturgis.  I wouldn't mind hitting up Glacier National Park along the way.  I suspect, however, that I will only be able to take an extended weekend. :-[

Title: Re: Beartooth Highway
Post by springman on 12/18/17 at 10:56:43

This sounds pretty good to me. If Lancer is willing to put up with us it is just a one day ride for me to Lancer's. Then Lancer, MM, Oldfeller and I could all ride out together from there. August would normally be good for me but I will have to play it by ear this year as we (work) are having a new building built for us which should be ready at latest by the end of August. And of course I am the office liaison with the building contractor and will be office liaison with the movers when we get to that.

Versey
It looks like it might be a days ride from Code to the Black Hills area.  Maybe , I should check out Cody for a place to stay on the way to the B Hills area.
How are you on meeting in Cody around the dry spell :-X :-[ in August ?   Even if Surge's is going on another days tide up the road ?

We should take this to the 2018 thread
