Title: In and out of the USA
Post by mpescatori on 05/12/16 at 05:29:04

Hi guys, this is a light-hearted query to shed some light on something which lurks in my bucket list...
...riding around the world.

It's not that difficult, as long as you have money to pay for gas, room&board and you don't get into fights...

Ride from Rome to Moscow and from there across the Urals and along the Trans-Siberian Route all the way to Vladivostok.

https://www.google.it/maps/dir/Roma/Vladivostok,+Territorio+del+Litorale,+Russia/@40.0567299,37.8736151,3z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x132f6196f9928ebb:0xb90f770693656e38!2m2!1d12.4963655!2d41.9027835!1m5!1m1!1s0x5fb39cba5249d485:0x186704d4dd967e35!2m2!1d132.0064506!2d43.1737387!3e0

From there you need ferry service to S.Korea (twice/week I read) and from S.Korea a freighter that'll take passengers to ferry you AND the bike in unison to N.America.

OK...

Let's say I want to ride the ALCAN... I need a boat that'll take me to Anchorage.
Then I'll ride out of Alaska and into Canada, and once in Vancouver I'd be heading south to the US Border.

https://www.google.it/maps/dir/Anchorage,+Alaska,+Stati+Uniti/Seattle,+Washington,+Stati+Uniti/@55.1551045,-142.7288774,5z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x56c8917604b33f41:0x257dba5aa78468e3!2m2!1d-149.9002778!2d61.2180556!1m5!1m1!1s0x5490102c93e83355:0x102565466944d59a!2m2!1d-122.3320708!2d47.6062095!3e0

Does anyone see any issues with riding out of Alaska, into Canada and into the US ?

Just daydreaming...  8-)

PS...  ::) How's the road from fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay ?  :D I'll need more range than the 2 1/2 gal. tank can provide...  :-/

Once upon a time, no problem. Today, might be a hassle getting into the lower 48.. Tourism into Alaska is not rare, and the number of people who have ridden Anchorage to Venezuela is not huge, but governments know people wanna do it, and I have never heard of anyone getting shut down. Surely with your background, well, except for that ten year stretch for armed robbery, kidnapping and extortion and stealing a snickers bar from a kid, you'll check out great at the borders.
How far into America are you wanting to ride?
I know you're not planning on heading South. You'd be crazy to try a solo trip through Mexico. My boss did it, about 25years ago. Windsurfer, loaded his van up with boards and sails and went from Midland all the way to Venezuela. He speaks fluent Spanish, tho.

According to Springman a trip into Mexico wouldn't be a good idea for a furriner these days, they see a non Mexican plate and you're a rolling ATM
Some of them won't take the money and let you go
other than that, the Canada border should be OK so long as your passport is in order
I have no idea how the roads in prudhoe bay area might be, but Youzguys has taken Thumper a lot of places where folks wouldn't ordinarily think a cruiser would go

As long as you're willing to go at a speed appropriate for the tires on the road you're traveling and in some cases push, you're good to go anywhere on anything.  However, I'd prefer having dual sport tires to pushing.

I was on a fire road with my savage, street tires.  Only bad part was deep sand.  otherwise it was all rocks and hard pack.

Someone posted a link where a girl did the Alcan hwy awhile back.  Think she did alaska to florida.  for the alcan part, she changed her tires from street to dual sport.

Traveling incognito as possible might be the ticket, so stop and buy a bunch of chickens and strap them on the back.   ;D

Also, think about what failures you're likely to have and how you're going to get replacements.  To they have dealerships for that bike in the country you're traveling in, etc.

Mr. Pescatori, I would love to join you in heading into central and south America, but as Art indicated I have already had some bad experiences in Mexico and it has only gotten worse since. Also, I am not yet retired.

Good luck to you. I hope you make your dreams reality.

Pesci:

Take some time to get and read through some of these ride reports.  This is by far the best motorcycle travel & adventure forum.  Last year I read a thread where someone traveled through all of Russia.  The RRs are excellent reading as well as motivation.  Lots of people with dual sports ride from the lower 48 to Alaska.  You will need a passport and at least a month.  The trip planning threads can answer all of your questions.

Thanks all for your replies, I posted the very same question on a HD Forum and nobody so much as asked "you crazy?"

Anyway, once in the lower 48 I have 90 days to cruise and my intent is to visit as much as possible and then crate the bike in Baltimore, Boston or NYC and sail home.

Although I have relatives in Colombia #wife's family# I do NOT intend to ride South of El Paso or wherever.

If I really wanted to do S.America, I'd sail from L.A. #or Portland, for that matter# and go straight to Lima, Perù.
Sure, that means missing out on Central America, but the odds are happier on getting mugged vs. getting free gas.
#and once I'd visited Peru Chile and Argentina... Brazil... set sail for South Africa... safe up until Ethiopia but riding across the Sudan ? Egypt ?  :-X#

And anyway... I'd need a bigger than 2 1/2 gal tank !  ;D

http://www.amazon.com/Old-Man-Bike-Simon-Gandolfi/dp/1906321663

This guy went through Mexico, Central America, all the way to the tip of South America on a 125cc Honda in 2006. He heard all the horror stories, didn't believe them, and went anyway.  None of the awful things he was told would happen to him turned out to be true.

He turned around and rode all the way back. All the way to NYC I believe. But that's a second book and I haven't read it yet.

Possibly things were different in 2006 -2007 than they are now. I don't know. But the book isn't expensive and it's worth a look I think.

Well, I Knew a guy in Austin who made a trip or two a year into Mexico. Last time he went he disappeared. Dead? Alive? Nobody knows. Maybe he never made it to the border. But he sure didn't get back to Austin.

What, exactly, does your experience living on the border have to do with the the experiences of the guy who wrote the book. Maybe you ought to at least read it before you start calling bullsh*t.

I suggested the book because the thread was about long distance  motorcycle travel and I believe it's an interesting story about the subject. Mr Gandolfi is, as far as I know, still alive and well. None of the things that he was warned about happened.

When was the last time you rode to the tip of Argentina?  :(

Well there is no law of any kind, Mexico earns it's reputation, and there is a reason 30 million of them are on our side of the border.  I can share some antidotes if you would like.

It is probably an interesting read and I read ride reports on advrider.com when time permits.  Regarding Mexico, I lived on the boarder and have traveled into Mexico many times and the stories are true.  I have been shaken down by their police, I know of someone who had to be x-rayed to see what organs they took, I was detained by our border patrol coming back into the US because I looked suspicious.

No, I don't believe I need to read it to say it is BS.

This individual didn't come home after a night of drinking in Juarez.  Sometime in morning he was found bloody in a booth in a night club.  He didn't remember much and it is speculated he was given rohyonol in a drink.  While he was knocked out they took a kidney, when he was back in the US they x-rayed him to see what they took.

Care to hear about the shake down from the Mexican police....

Juarez has the infamous distinction as one of the worlds most dangerous cities.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/2993831.stm

The Mexican attorney general's office says it is investigating the possibility that a number of women murdered in the northern border town of Ciudad Juarez may have been killed by organ traffickers.

In the last 10 years more than 300 women have been murdered in the town, with several hundred more missing.

Despite a number of convictions for some of the crimes, the killings have continued.

This is just one more twist in the series of killings in Ciudad Juarez.

In a press conference in the town of Chihuahua, federal prosecutor Carlos Vega said 14 of the victims may have been kidnapped and killed so that their organs could be sold.

It's not guaranteed that trouble will find you.
Probably just as dangerous in parts of Chicago or New York.
I don't go there either.

Even if that is anything more that someones speculation, it is still quite different from the story about the guy waking up in a bar missing a kidney a couple of hours after someone slipped him a mickey. A scenario which is pretty much medically impossible.

I don't doubt that Juarez can be a dangerous place. Especially for folks who go there in search of Drink, drugs or the company of women for hire. Folks who basically have a sign on their back saying " here I am ! take advantage of me!"

The author of the book I recommended, being seventy something, happily married, not an idiot, and fluent in Spanish, does not present himself as that kind of easy prey, and did not frequent the locales where the predators typically congregate.

Besides, he started his ride in Veracruz, not Juarez or any of the other notorious border towns. I simply don't understand how you can dismiss what he has to say as "bullsh*t without having read the book, simply based on supposed unpleasant experiences of your own and a stupid urban myth.

Why can't you acknowledge the fact that it might be possible to ride a motorcycle from Mexico to Argentina and back without being robbed, or murdered. ?

Risk/Reward thing. I don't Need anything in Mexico and some of what is there, I Seriously don't need. Not to say I didn't have Fun in Mexico, I did, but, not going back.

If you look at my original post the only portion of your statement I challenged was:
None of the awful things he was told would happen to him turned out to be true.

I didn’t say it wasn’t possible to travel through Mexico without incident.  The premise of my position is that Mexico is a very dangerous place and that is speaking from first hand experience.  Only to receive condescending and belittling comments about alligators in New York and assertions that my experiences were not forthright.

So yes it is possible for people to have an adventure of a lifetime and some people aren’t as fortunate.

What a guy...

Then, Ann Devert heard from a friend who recently returned from Michoacan, where vigilante self-defense groups in numerous communities have engaged in deadly confrontations with the Knights Templar drug cartel.
After vigilantes threatened to descend on a key cartel area last month, the Mexican government sent in thousands of troops and police to try to keep the peace. The government has even joined forces with the vigilantes as the Knights Templar become further entrenched in the agricultural state.
Ann Devert had been in touch with both the American and French embassies in Mexico. Her son, born in France, has dual citizenship.
Devert's friends and family were hopeful that his disappearance was only temporary, another story to recount from his wild travels around the world -- from Pamplona, Spain, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and beyond.
"I've been chased with a gun in Colombia, chipped my tooth on a gun that was shoved in my mouth in Venezuela and shot everything from a bazooka to a machine gun, an M16 to a Colt .45," Devert wrote in his travel blog, A New Yorker Travels. "I've been in some of the poorest and some of the most dangerous parts of the world and to many of the finest, and I still can't tell which I liked more. I think that life is a pilgrimage."
In an October 19 post, Devert described his latest journey on a type of vehicle he had no experience using.
"I've never ridden a motorcycle," he wrote. "Mostly, naturally, because I don't know how. So tomorrow I'm going to go to the DMV, get my motorcycle permit, buy a bike and hopefully figure out how to ride it home without crashing. Which I'm sure will be an adventure in itself."
He added, "Then in the next 2 or 3 weeks I'm going to drive it across America, through Central America, down to Brazil for the World Cup, and eventually south to Ushuaia, which as far as I can tell from a map is about as far south as one can get on the continent."
He purchased a green 2002 Kawasaki. Ann Devert said her son took a safety course and spent hours studying YouTube videos on how to survive falls from bikes.
But the fact that he had never driven a motorcycle concerned her, she said. He promised not to travel faster than 55 mph, yet he took a nasty spill while speeding in Florida, Ann Devert said. He emerged unscathed.
Friends and family created the Help Find Harry page in

Hey guys. For what it is worth I previously did business with Mexico and I had to travel down there every so often. Sometimes I would fly, sometimes I would take the bus at the border and a few times I drove. I've driven from Houston to Veracruz, to Mexico City to Queretaro to Guadalajara and on back to Texas through Piedras Negras. I have driven from Houston to Monterrey several times. As long as you did all your driving in the daylight it was relatively safe but you knew you ran a bit of a risk. This was around 20 years ago.

Things have progressively gotten worse in Mexico and the last time I was there maybe 15 years or so ago I was shaken down by police and quite honestly was in fear of my life. I prefer not to go to Mexico at all any more. By the way I am fluent in spanish, it was actually my first language.

Having said all that, it does not happen to everybody. It is perfectly possible to go through Mexico unscathed and to enjoy it. I personally though do not intend to risk it. Which is a shame as Mexico has some really beautiful country. And if you really like living dangerously, the twisting mountain road from the Mexican east coast to Mexico City could really be a blast.

I opened up your last post, and I don't see anything that indicates you inserted anything that was a link to a photo.
