Title: Lowering handlebars and moving them forward
Post by Garry on 04/14/16 at 02:00:06

Hi All,

Picked up my new S40 today. Brilliant! To make this bike absolutely comfortable I need to move the handle bars forward about 2" and down about the same. I am sure that someone, somewhere has done this and I'll bet there is an aftermarket setup already on the market! Can anyone on this site steer me in the right direction please?

Cheers
Garry from Oz

Gary,

What year is your S40?

I machined the factory risers down to accomplish what you want to do.

You must keep the risers a little over 2 inches tall or the controls will hit the gas cap.

If you search on the forum you will find that there are other options for risers.

Had a similar 'comfort/handling' problem and finally determined to put 1" clubman bars on mine 'upside down' so the horns are up.  It moved the grips lower and forward, more ergonomically angled; seems better to me anyway, without anything else to fund.

Of course, I removed the tall riser extensions to get the bar clamps down enough to make this work.  New bolts/nuts were a few dollars.

Feels more solid and balanced now, like a motorcycle, not a moped.

Now, if I could only get it started again. :-* >:(

JMHO...

Garry,

couple of "adjustments" you need to be aware of:

You will need to adjust your controls, and mirror mounts. The controls are JIS phillips screws (the funky japanese screws) BE CAREFUL, they strip easily if you don't have the JIS screwdrivers.

The mirror mounts are METRIC allen heads. Easy enough to loosen and adjust the mounts.

Watch the bar centering in the dogbone. You will see the alignment dimple is now a bit wonky and any discoloring from the original mounting should help get it right.

another tip - I used a piece of cardboard box folded in half to give me enough clearance on the controls over the gas cap, right-side.

Thanks again for the info DR. Yes I noticed the tight clearance on yours around the fuel tank and will probably used the cardboard method as well!
Cheers Garry
