Title: Smart Turn system
Post by old_rider on 04/13/16 at 11:02:12

Ok guys, here I am again being a "beta tester" for an item, but this one is for motorcycles.
I do a lot of You Tube watching on things, and found this after reading a story about the companies "new technology"
Long story short, this device is more than likely a mercury switch for canceling your turn signal after you make your turn.
It is being designed for motorcycles (like ours) with no auto cancel on the turn signal.
I to this day still forget on occasion to turn off my blinker and I have followed the wife and she is worse than me! LOL :)
Well, it's creators  are a Slovenian start up company that are hoping to break into the motorcycle parts industry. By becoming a "beta tester" I can purchase the STS (Smart Turn System) at about half price ($100 shipping included, or close to) so if it works i'll have the bragging rights of yet another product test under my belt :)
Thought I would throw this out there, to see if it would interest anyone, I will update when I receive it and do an "unboxing" video or some such.

I know of a way to make your blinkers "remind" you when you leave them on, its called a piezo beeper, most alarm systems have one.
All you do is wire it into your blinker relay and it will beep when you activate your blinker and stop when you turn it off, annoying, but it works.
More on this in the future :)

Cool opportunity to test this new system.  I noted your comment about the pezio. Is there a "one" that works for our bike best?  I think I have heard of folks hooking up a LED light to the relay and wiring it up higher on the handlebars somewhere as a visual cue.  I'd like to do that is anyone knows specifically what LED to by and how to wire it.

Stew,

I wired up an LED to my turn signals and loved the results, but I received a lot of criticism on the forum for doing it.

I feel like a complete goofball when I leave my turn signals on.  :-[

If this thing works, I may try one myself.

Comments, ideas, and you called that criticism?
I'm being critical. I'm criticizing,
You got FEEDBACK,  not flack.

Justin,

I think that you are right.

Of all the guys that I ride  with  that had something negative to say about my addition of of pilot light on the turn signals not a single one of them ever forgets to cancel their turn signals. Except when I am following them.

My Yamaha V-Star had self cancelling turn signals and for some reason Yamaha discontinued that safety feature.

I could possibly purchase the Smart Turn System depending on the results of Old Rider's testing. For the time being the pilot light is a Life Saver....... :-[

As I stated in the other thread you linked - my problem with the Savage is the turn signal indicator is down on the tank, and I can't see that with my full face helmet.

Kenny had the right idea to put an indicator light up where it is in your line of sight.

Post by Art Webb on 04/14/16 at 07:03:15

well it's a lot less expensive than that STS
My XS1100 had self canceling signals, usually they canceled too soon  ;D
I thnk those were on a timer or some such
I do like having a bike with visible TS indicators though
I also prefer bar / tree mounted speedos, etc

I ordered some LEDs last night. I am going to toy with the single LED for both versus one or each, and if I can get the single LED to work properly with the resistors that's my goal. Worst case I'll get frustrated and just wire a single LED per each.

If I find success in this mod, I'll try and capture some images and offer some instructions on what I did for those of you that want to give it a go.

Stew,

I was able to do the pilot light with just one LED. I tapped into the flasher for the LED.

On my Blast the flasher was way back under the seat so I tapped into the front turn signals and have two pilot lights.

You will not have any trouble.

Cool.  When you say you tapped into the flasher, remind me where you tapped in?  I saw some comments that you could tap in inside the headlight bucket or under the seat at one of the connections? and I understood that without the resistor the current will flow back across.  So I presume you had 1 LED with the black to the ground, and 2 leads with resistors on each going to both the L and R blinker post that gets juice when the blinker is on?  If it makes any difference, I have a 2008 with two separate blinker indicators on the tank/speedo versus some of the older bikes that I think had one...so if you had one and tapped into that one line, mine might be a little different? Maybe?

Stew,

This pertains to my 2013 S40.

I wired the LED into the flasher.

From the LED I hooked up the Red wire into the Brown wire on the flasher.

I hooked up the Black wire from the LED into the Blue wire on the flasher.

Stew,

If you take a look at the flasher you will see the wires that connect to it.

I wish the tank wasn't such pain to take off, I would take a pic.

I am tapping in to the power sent to the flasher when the turn signal switch is thrown either way.

If you find the brown wire and the blue wire at the flasher it is easy to attach your LED to them to verify that it will work correctly.

Cool.  Thanks again KennyG.  So it sounds like I need to be connecting to the brown and blue wires that give he blinker system power when either blinker is thrown.

I think with your description I can fish around in there with my meter and locate the feeds and make sure they work correctly before slicing up any wires.

Please don't take your tank off...if you hate it as much as I do I wouldn't either!  >:(

Ok, after seeing Kenny G's post I did a short video explaining how you can hook up that piezo blinker to your flasher relay, the one I use in the video is actually from Radio Shack, it is a 6-12V DC 102db alarm, the pins I used were from a kit for a computer connector with 9 pins.
I ordered a single tone piezo for the wife's, and i'll post a video of it when it comes in.

Here is the single tone one I ordered:

Excellent Old Rider.

This is why this forum is so awesome and kicks all other forum's butts!

Title: Re: Smart Turn system

On my old VTX I did the same thing, and to fasten the piezo to the bike I just used some Velcro squares.
I eventually had to tape some foam over the speaker of the piezo! at stop lights it was loud!
I am hoping the 95db one I ordered for the wife's bike is quiet enough to not make car drivers mad, but loud enough for her to hear as she accelerates after a turn. ;D

Old Rider,

Your beeper works really good.

If I didn't already have the LED setup I would use the beeper.

Ok, got my reply back on the STS blinker beta.... here is the email I received, so its going to be a couple months before I get to report on it :)

Hi,
thank you for your support and participation in STS Early user program. We are extremely excited to start shipping our products and receive your feedback.

At the moment we are testing and certification STS device for homologation and preparing installation manuals for every motorcycle.

We are planning to send you a detailed installation manual in beginning of June. At that moment we expect you to go through installation manual and contact us if you will have any question or remarks. If you will feel you are not capable of installing STS device on your own you can contact your local mechanic or our support team. You also have full right to leave early user program and we will fully refund your money.

We plan to start shipping STS devices in second half of June, there could be a chance that some models will be delayed but in that case we will let you know as soon as possible and you will decide whether you still want delayed device.

After you receive and install our device we would really appreciate if you could do a test ride and give us feedback. This could be in writting or as a video. In case of any problems we will get in contact with you and resolve it. Again, at any moment you will have a chance to return the device and we will fully return your money.

Thank you again for your support and we will keep you posted about our update.

Best regards

Some electronic stuff, some wires to the handlebars, and a fifty thousand volt blast after about thirty seconds,,
Annoying, but it would work.
Might be kinda hard on the khakis, eeh, Jake?

.
There is a thread in the "Technical Documents/Reference" section
titled "Blinker Buddy" started 9/29/10 that discusses piezoelectric
buzzers for turn signals.

Here's the link:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1285772416/14

See Reply #14 in the thread for a picture of my buzzer.

I've used it on my S40 for the last four years.

It's not too loud to be obnoxious but it does remind me to cancel
my turn signal.
The wiring is dead simple. Just pull the plug off of the flasher,
slip the buzzer wires into the plug, put the plug back on the flasher,
then tape or zip tie the buzzer to the flasher.
I like it better than a visual indicator that may be too dim in sunlight
or too bright at night.
More importantly, it doesn't distract my eyes from the road.

Hey guys.  So it looks like all I need to do it tap into the brown and blue wire on the "black box" and that will illuminate the LED?  I have to head to Church and then out of town for the day but plan to test this with the meter and an LED tonight when I get home.

LOL! Ok third try.... got the little 95dB piezo in and put it on the wife's bike, she LOVES it!

I do need to work on my video skills though :)

For JoG  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS8RPngVjrM

Guess it's for everyone.... every time I try to link the video, it keeps putting the same one up I already posted, even though I cut and paste the CORRECT link.

cutting ? if you meant copying no idea, but if you're clicking cut, you're not copying the link so can't paste what ain't copied  ;D

Ok gang...with the help of your tips I got my LED blinker reminder installed last night just as instructed and it works as expected. Ridiculously bright at night, but I will need to see how bright it is in the daytime. I rode to work today but it is quite overcast so I hope to maybe catch a short video at lunch if the sun is out and I'll post here for your review.

Title: Re: Smart Turn system
Post by stewmills on 05/10/16 at 11:08:35

Ok, here's the video link. It's not extremely bright in full sun, but for me it does the trick. May need to tinker with it a bit to optimize the angle of the light. You can see the LED lower-right on the handlebar area and the reflection on the windshield. Kinda got a heads-up display out of the deal  ;)

Post by KennyG on 05/10/16 at 13:53:53

Stew,

My LED works kind of like a "Heads-Up" display. The light bounces off the backside of my fly screen.

Since I am night blind, I no longer ride after dark so being too bright has not yet been a problem. My LED is attached to the headlight with two sided tape so it will be easy enough to move the LED quickly if it is too bright. If I knew I was going to be riding at night time it would be simple enough to stick a piece of black electrical tape over the LED and just let a little light come out the sides of the LED.

I am sure the LED is saving my life because I now turn the turn signal off when my turn is completed.
