Title: Yamaha SR400?
Post by norm92de on 04/02/16 at 10:03:54

Hi guys,
Anybody ridden a Yamaha SR400?

They look like a nice simple bike for people like me to maintain and ride.
The big "V" might be the deal breaker. :-/

What "V" are you talking about?

I think the SR400 is pretty cool. Only seen it on the web, though.

They're nice... but what will an SR bring you, that a Savage don't have?...

Less power, less torque, more weight,... and a chain to adjust...
Just like kickin' things?...  ;D

It does look good but people tell me (I have not ridden one) that the power is a little weak.  Also, I've reached the age where kick starting is no longer fun.

V TWIN ???? or the rear CHASIS "V" ???

wheeeeeeeeee, it's a retro THUMPER
399cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve engine which weighs 384 pounds and a 30.9-inch seat height;
ADDED BONUS - there’s no push-button starter. The SR400 is equipped with a kick starter as the only means of getting the engine running.

I might be slightly biased but I like my S40 better!  :P

Not ridden the 400, but ridden the sr500 and xt500. IMO, nice solid simple and dependable bike. They go ok but no rocket by modern standards. The cabbage has more stomp. Both have the correct number of cylinders.

Kick start only is not a bonus, it's a detraction
back in the day when electric legs were unreliable, I was 'all kick all the time' but today the electric legs is the better choice, especially if you are making a lot of short trips
That gets old really quick
I want the option on a button, and for that price, I should have it

I would add an electric start option and another 250-300cc's too ...  ;)

i'd be "tempted" ...

if they brought back the tempter with the savage engine, at the cost of a savage, then so would I.

If the "Tempter" is as tempting as the "Savage" is savage.....  :D

Now, wondering if we could stuff the S40 guts into the ST 400 Tempter chasis ???

Nay, 'twould be an SR400 with electric leg, the savage is a cruiser, the SR a standard, totaly diferent

DR, I think with some fabbing a Tempter would accept a Savage driveline, they's so similar the Savage engine must be descended from the Tempter's
Like a GN400's motor was basically a DR motor

I had a Savage 11 years ago.  It was a fun bike but very uncomfortable for me after 30 minutes of riding.  The seat was just terrible and a Harley Sportser seat was no better.  This year I bought a 2015 SR400.  It's power is down from the Savage but the riding position and seat are much better for me.  When revving to 4000 rpm it does get a bit vibey.  I replaced the front sprocket with a larger one to help with vibration.  That did help but it is still a single without a counter-balancer.  I also have a Yamaha XT225 and I will say its motor is much smoother.

I am loving the SR400 though.  The standard style reminds me of my first bikes and is my preference.

I'm with you Kieth T.  The stock LS650 was not the bike for me and my 6'3" frame.  So I built my own SRavage650. Now I'm comfortable for at least 45 minutes! :)

It seems nobody understood what I meant by "the big V".

Vibration. Without a balancer is probably quite an issue with this bike. It is only a 400 but Ill bet it gets ones attention at higher revs. :'(

LOL

Thanks for clarifying that norm92de....3 years later!!  ;D

================================

I'm going to look at a 2017 LS650 this Sunday, but I've never ridden one.  How is the vibration?  Now, I expect there to be some vibration at higher RPM . . . that won't bother me too much.
