Title: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by DesertRat on 03/24/16 at 16:01:37

The Suzuki Marauder 97-04 have 7" head lamps, ebay had dozens for sale. Make sure they're 7" and not 5" lights, ask the seller to measure the GLASS not the diameter of the ring.

*THIS IS A PLUG AND PLAY DIRECT SWAP, NO MODS TO THE HARNESS OR TRIPLE-TREE ARE REQUIRED.

unbolt your OEM headlight, 2x 12mm nuts under the lower tripletree.

remove the 2x phillips screws L/R that holds in your headlight glass and ring. Lift from the bottom of the glass and ring and a slight twist it should come out. There's a "lip" that holds fast to the upper portion of your bucket.

Unplug the BLACK plug that connects to the bulb.

next, unplug only 1 (one) of the turn signal connections, it's all you need to get enough clearance to remove the wires from the bucket. I unplugged the blue/black connector (right signal).

next, unplug the white connector that plugged your black headlight connector. This will take some doing, it's a VERY tight connection.

remove the rear cover from the Marauder bucket and mount the bucket to the lower tripletree.

feed your wires back through the hole in the new bucket and make all your connections.

Post by DesertRat on 03/24/16 at 16:15:44

put the headlight in the bucket and secure it with the 2x phillips screws. and replace the rear cover with the 2x phillips screws making sure to feed the wires through the center slot.

START your bike and run through a check of ALL you lights, signals, flashers, hi/low beam.

ENJOY.

Side profile picture. It sticks out quite a bit more than the stock OEM light.

this swap took all of 20 minutes

that included me smoking a cigar, getting a drink and messing with some clam chowder I had started on the stove.

IT IS AN EASY UPGRADE.

Awesome write-up! Thanks Rat! We've been trying to figure out which year Marauder lights work for a while.

It should be an even swap after shipping. The S40 light was in way better shape (almost new) than the Marauder. It is rusted and pitted, gotta paint it now.

Maybe you should ride it an night before you take it apart....and confirm that it works better than the original one!

Although.....with a 7" bucket you can find other reflectors to fit in the housing.  If you can find a 7" Cibie or Hella E-Code reflector, and install a Silverstar.....you will be very happy!

I do very little night riding, anywhere from 1-3 times a week for the commute. Have you run that combo? Is there a noticeable difference? If so, there wouldn't happen to be a thread around here that has more data?

something like this???:

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by Dave on 03/26/16 at 12:54:32

No....this kind of light.

Here is the US version which is DOT.  The lens has a flatter cut off on both sides.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HELLA-7-Vision-Plus-176mm-High-Low-Beam-12V-Halogen-Conversion-Headlamp-HB2-/162014274781?hash=item25b8cda4dd:g:M6IAAOSwe7BW0MIZ&vxp=mtr

If you can find an E-Code version....the light on the right side of the bulb has a higher vertical cut off on low beam - which lights up road signs better than the DOT version.

And have I used them?  Yes - but not for a while.  When I had cars and motorcycles with sealed beam headlights - this was the upgrade to get a light that had a bulb that could be replaced...rather than replacing the entire sealed beam unit.  The lens is much better glass than the old sealed beams, and the light pattern is better.  And we would install bulbs that had 60W/100W bulbs......that is probably not an option on the Savage since the entire charging system is only about 100 watts.  Halogen bulbs had not yet made it to headlight use - so Silverstar and other brighter bulb were not available....a brighter light required more watts.

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by Dave on 03/27/16 at 05:10:44

The first one you listed is the correct E-Code light - but it is used and has a bit of rust on the back.

The second one you listed looks to be new - but I can't tell for sure if the light is E-Code.  Since I can't see DOT anywhere in the photos...and it has that disclaimer on it....it could be an E code light.  (Instead of DOT it has an E on the lens.

The third one won't do you any good....it is a cover for a Mercedes and the lens won't fit anything.

You also need to confirm the Marauder headlight accepts this "standard" form of headlight assembly.  There are some locating tabs that align the assembly in the bucket.....look at the back of the light and see if it matches what you have on your Marauder headlight.

Thanks for the insight Dave. Will continue the hunt.

Do you have a part # for the Sylvania bulb?

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by Dave on 03/28/16 at 04:46:36

Go to any autoparts store, Walmart, etc.  They will have a rack with headlight bulbs...you want the one that is listed as 9003/H4.

The Ultra is the lower entry level bulb, has a tad brighter light than a stock bulb, and it has a pretty long life.  (This is the one I use in my car as it will last several years).

The Silverstar is brighter, has a faint blue coating on the bulb, is brighter/whiter that the stock bulb, and has a reasonable life (but I barely get a year from them on my car and they burn out).  This is the bulb that I use in my motorcycles, where the limited life isn't an issue....I buy the 2 pack and keep the extra bulb in the tool kit.

They make a Silverstar zXe that has a purple coating....and it is a fashion statement....any bulb with a coating is filtering out parts of the light spectrum that can help you see - you are far better off with a bulb that is clear.  The blue tint filters out parts of the spectrum that helps you see tan/brown - which is the color of the deer hiding in the bushes waiting to sprint out into the roadway.

They also make a Silversar Xtravision - but I have never bought it as I anticipate the life to be very short.

Post by Kris01 on 03/28/16 at 18:52:24

The one thing that keeps me away from the Silverstars is the life expectancy. Since a motorcycle always has the light on day and night, I expect to have to replace the light bulb even more often than a car. I'm too lazy for that!  ;D I usually go for the longest lasting bulbs.

*UPDATE -

the Hella E-code/DOT lens swap is NOT gonna work ... the Marauder lens trim is welded and tabbed differently. Cannot get the lens assembly outta the ring ...

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by Dave on 04/11/16 at 04:18:21

OK.....sorry about sending you down a wrong path.  A lot of the 7" light buckets use the common 7" reflector assembly.

~ UPDATE ~

the HELLA bulbs are CRAPTASTIC ... low beam burnt out already, I run HI BEAM only, day and night, went to a low beam one night after being flashed and it was burnt ... pulled it and the filament is burnt ...

sent back for refund ...

my review and advice: DO NOT BUY

OK, what you got are the 9003 standard bulbs, in standard Hella does have a H4 version.
I don't know this for a fact, but I would suspect that a H4 bulb would be more vibration resistant.

:o

umm ... ALL vehicles have vibrations ... if an automotive  standard bulb cannot withstand vibrations then WTF good are they?

I had this bulb installed less than 12 days, only 8 of those were in actual use on the bike, and NONE of them were with the low beam in use at all ... so yeah, WTF HELLA ???

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by verslagen1 on 04/24/16 at 09:51:41

vibrations in a car are completely different than a m/c.
a car is more massive and the vibration is mainly from the road.
whereas a m/c well at least ours vibrates upon every revolution.
but failure after a week is from a different cause... mfg or shipping.

I'm only saying a 9003 is the wrong bulb and will have a shorter life then an H4.

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by DesertRat on 04/24/16 at 09:57:34

I got it Verslagen ... I know M/C's have different vibe patterns vs automobiles/trucks, but HELLA is known for it's "OFFROAD" ruggedness ...

my theory:
these are factory 2nd's, cast-offs, and failed QC bulbs they're dumping on the market to recoup manuf costs at the expense of the consumer ... most of which have no ba!!s to return and will just buy another bulb or switch brands ...

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by verslagen1 on 04/24/16 at 11:21:11

one bad bulb don't make a product bad.

could be it was dropped in transit, a one time event.

my company makes a high pressure ss hose.
tested and qualified to a/c vibration requirements.
It gets shipped to UK, installed on a subassy, then shipped to the US.
It gets killed in shipping because they don't provide any protection against vibration.  It's so bad the wire braid wears grooves in the outside of the hose.  They added strain reliefs and all it does is change where it fails.  the solution... ship loose in a separate box.

Title: Re: Suzuki Marauder Headlight Swap
Post by Dave on 04/25/16 at 04:25:28

I agree....although it is not nice to be the one who receives a "bad" example - it does not condemn the whole lot of them.

I have been using the Silverstar bulbs, and although they are not motorcycle bulbs - they hold up OK in the Motorcycle.  They last about a year in my car (12,000 miles), I have not burned one out in a motorcycle yet - but I would expect them to last about the same in a bike...maybe a bit less as there is more vibration.  If you watch you can get a 2 pack on sale....and you keep the second one as a spare.

If you want the "rough service" or motorcycle specific bulbs, you can get them here.  (Avoid bulbs with tinted coatings, as that blocks light and reduces the output....blue tinted bulbs are a fashion statement and don't improve the light output).

This company seems to like the Phillips Extreme Power bulb, and it currently is on sale for $ 36.99 for a 2 pack.
