Title: Nitrided Cam Chains ***SALE *** thru Nov 30 Post by LANCER on 02/14/16 at 10:37:15 This is a survey or sorts. I am wanting to know if there are any who are interested in getting a cam chain with nitrided pins. I do not know what the price would be at this time. If there is enough interest I will then get the price. One thing for sure is that the price will be below the cost of a stock cam chain. We did this a few years back and it was very cost effective. I believe the price for the upgraded chain was about $45 out my door and that included shipping to you in the US. International was a bit more. So, anyone interested ? ? MERRY CHRISTMAS |

A bike chain is 1/2" pitch, they say when 24 links measure 12 1/8" c to c it's done. That's .125" over 24 pins, or about .005" per pin. When you take one apart and look, you can see it. I don't think there is chain ''stretch'' as it is commonly called, only wear. |

Our cam chain has the pins going thru ''plates'' I believe. They should both wear, it seems. Has anyone that has changed one taken one apart and looked? |

As they go around the gears and the chain bends the plates rotate around the pins, causing wear. Coating the pins before assembly would give them a harder surface and they should wear longer. Same would apply to the holes in the plates. The outside of the new chain would be a nice gold color, but I don't think the ''teeth'' really wear. Basically just cosmetic on the outside, but pretty. I'll go for one, and maybe put a window in the side cover. |

These next two links don't concerm mc chains but are very general with info on the nitriding hardening process. "Standard" steel has a hardness of 35-40 on the Rockwell "C" scale. The nitrided pins are 64-74. They said they needed a good 3 months lead time from the placement of the order, plus manufacturing, shipping, etc. Sounds like they are short handed and overworked...like a lot of folks these days...oh, and underpaid. Sorry for the long wait guys, but this is what we are dealing with in the world of Obama. |
