Title: August Event at Dave's - OH/KY/IND - August 24-28.
Post by Dave on 01/29/16 at 11:01:55

Time to start up the forum thread for the gathering/ride/camping at my house for August.

I live in Northern Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati.  There is some great riding in this area - maybe not as many curves as the Dragon, or as big of hills as the Cherohala or Blueridge Parkway....but some really nice back roads that are hilly and curvy.  The routes are not yet established, however rides can include the horse farm area in KY, maybe an overnight trip to the wilderness areas like Daniel Boone National Forest or Natural Bridge or Carter Caves.  The Brown County areas in Indiana are also a possibility, and there are some nice rides in OH as well.  Forum member Sjaskow is an avid rider and may be willing to lead us around a bit.  Having a ride in this area might allow some of the folks who can't get to the TN, NC or TX rides a chance to ride with some Savage folks.

I have plenty of room for camping, and an outdoor shower for taking off the road grime.  If you don't want to pack a tent I have plenty of garage and porch space to set up a cot, and if it is really hot I can throw the window AC unit in the garage and keep it cool.  We have a pond that is well stocked with Catfish, and I really want someone to show me how to clean and cook them.

I have not yet established the days, and at this point it is open to suggestion.  I do have a lot of evening meetings the first weeks of every month - the 3rd Wednesday on the 17th of August, and after that meeting I don't have any other evenings that are committed.

Scan around on the following videos, and you can get an idea what the local roads are like.

This one has more straights and sweepers than most of our rural roads.

This video is Route 10 and Route 22.....I ride these roads a lot as the Route 10 is only a mile from my house.  If I want an hour ride I take Route 10 down to Brooksville and turn around.

Show me a picture of where you sit to shoot your rifle.

;D

I know I will be able to do that much, even if I have to make me up some really really wimpy rounds up so as to not bang up on my shoulder and chest.

Us old crip-up post surgical gimp types gotta ask these sorts of questions .....

::)       MM is the one that knows how to clean a catfish, all I can do is try to catch me an itty bitty one.

MM, you can invite Jeb to come on up for the trip, just sos he could actually whup up on me riding some.   Best chance he is ever gonna get, you know.

dave, what OF needs is a 4x4 post set in the ground that he can sit behind and put the rifle stock on.  otherwise even the air rifle will kick the sheet out of him let alone that anti tank catfish gun.   ;)

We just have a big old hayfield/pasture to shoot.....or possibly the woods if you prefer shade.  On my property 500 feet is about the longest shot you can make - if you want longer we will have to go to the neighbors farm.  I will use the tractor and loader to move a large picnic table wherever we need it, and I do have a 10'x10 canopy that can be put up to keep the sun off you.  The neighbor is a gun dealer, and he likely has some long range places to shoot (he has 10 times the acres that I do).

No Jed on this trip.  As much as I like Jed as a person - he was just too much of a loose cannon, and far too willing to ride over his head.  Jed trying to ride wheelies on the road in front of the Harley shop, and zooming up and down the public parking lots while we looked at maps was just a bit too much enthusiasm for me.   MM did his best to warn him - but Jed was not willing to listen and comply.  There is a group of young folks on sports bikes up here called the Assphalt Junkies.....and they ride like Jed....and they take frequent rides to the ER (mostly inside a big box on four wheels with the lights and sirens turned on).

Not you Oldfeller....you got a pretty good idea what you and your bike are capable of....Jed hadn't quite figured that out yet and come to realize that he is not indestructible.

I can just point you to the spot the Assphalt Junkies gather each Saturday morning....and you can chase them around for a while.

How about I just try to shoot their rear tires out as they speed on by?

Remember, I got to "act responsibly" now and not hurty myself.

Most likely you won't be the first one to have taken shots.........the locals don't have a lot of love for them.

If you are still riding around on that worn out front tire - we might just have to do a "tirectomy" on your bike while you are up here!

Now... now... we must responsible with the backstop, we don't want farmer John coming after us for a dead cow.

And a rickoshay will ruin our day.

DAVE: Thanks for the (Utube ) rides..
One question... What is that weird looking green stuff next to the roads ??? :o
You did get me all enthused.  Fired up "the Thumper" and did 54 miles on a couple of back roads this afternoon. 8-)

It is a funny thing about that front tire -- it still has enough meat to pass inspection.

I've got a replacement front tire in the closet, and I will put it on when the existing tire gets below inspection limit (come inspection time).

I would likely bring a 7mm-08 carry gun and mebbe the long barrel bipod 30-06  instead of the 20mm anti-tank rifle  (it is too too noisy for civilized areas).

;)

Versy mentioned the .22 nitro piston air rifle we that both bought a few years back -- that sucker gets heavier to hold every durn year you know and it has never been still while it is firing, either.

It will punch a 15.8 grain .22 caliber pellet clear through a squirrel, though,  even a bit slaunch-wise it will bore a hole right on through him.

Small world : Versy mentioned the .22 nitro piston air rifle we that both bought a few years back

I bought a Crossman-Shockwave 22cal Nitro Piston this year .   It is a lot more smooth shooting that the Ruger Air-Magnum 22cal. I got last year.  The Ruger is to much motion going on before the pellet leaves the barrel.  I'll bring my favorite air pistol the rifle might not fit in my saddle bags.  :)

I'd like to do this ride if I can make it work and I won't slow you guys down too much
also some of you avid rifle guys might learn me how to shoot at longer ranges (my marksmanship leaves some to be desired)
we'll see what time and finances dictate
I wonder if I'm faster or slower around a curve on the scooter?  ::)

I suspect that those who go on the Texas trip will have a chance to lay out their plans for the August trip to Dave's farm.

Some sort of organized truck sharing, etc.

After that trip is over, we can discuss the Blue Ridge Campground trip as by then folks may find it is either or with Dave's trip being only a month later on.    I won't be going to the Blue Ridge trip as I will still be in recovery from my heart surgery, so that one is up to you guys to pull together if you want it.

I am going to Dave's in August, even if it means just driving up in the Cube toting some firearms.

I hit the ton on the way home one night
the scoot didn't much like it
neither did I
but there was more to be had if I'd been braver. the scooter was not topped out
70-80 is smooth, 90 is stressed a bit, 100 is definitely getting up ther
top speed is supposed to be 110

I dunno about that dragon slayer bit, I'm more like a dragon survivor, crept through it nice and slow, ask poor lancer, he was behind me the whole way, probably wondering what was wrong with my throttle hand ;D
Riding is definitely doable, though I wouldn't be able to bring my long gun I don't think (not sure about the law on that between here and there)
Also if Springman wants to go, we may be sharing the Ranger again

Well Fellers

If it ain't raining then I'm ridding  :P .   I'll leave the long guns at home.   I thought I'd bring a ballon popping Air (pellet) pistol (P-17) Beeman I think.   I could bring my 22LR 10" contender or the same in 222 Rem. or same in 45LongColt ???

Dave , What kinda Noise level are the neighbors good with ?    I have found that a 100 yard water balloon can be a hard target for an open-sighted pistol.  (We may need some REALLY BIG WATER BALLOONS)     ;D

My arsenal is a bit limited....shotguns, a .22 rifle, handguns.  I don't have anything that will shoot a long distance.

No problem with the neighbors and noise.  Most of them shoot on a regular basis - on any weekend day you are likely to hear somebody shooting.

I own 25 acres, and we won't be shooting right next door to anyone's house.  There are plenty of hills to use as a back stop.

There is very little chance that you will need to worry about your top speed on the rides around this area - however you will have to be able to carry a reasonable speed in the corners.  If you have to slow down for every corner on the scooter, the rides will be tedious.  There are a lot of corners in this area, as it is very hilly and the roads wander around a lot.  There are not as many blind corners as there are around the Dragon/Blueridge area, and there generally aren't 2 or 3 of the curves back to back - but the roads certainly aren't straight.  On Route 10 there are a couple of turns that are really sharp and they can sneak up on a rider.....I will be certain to point those out as we come to them. - the rest of the corners are 40 mph sweepers and there is a lot of elevation changes going on the entire time.

Practice making turns on the scooter and find out how far over until the chicken strips on the tires are gone.......although I really don't know home many turns you can find in your area of TX?  ;)

Title: Re: August Event at Dave's - OH/KY/IND
Post by Art Webb on 02/01/16 at 08:31:59

your definition of a 40 MPH sweeper and mine may differ
On the Dragon run I think everyone was ok with the speed I held through sweepers, it was the blind turns and tight twisties that made me Captain Slow
I have some sweepers around here that are 'suggestion' posted at 40, that I take at 55-60, and I know me and the scoot could take them faster, but it's hard to push it going in , same as when I ran the Dragon
the main limiting factor for me on the tight turns is fear, pure and simple, and it's hard to find places to practice with tighter turns around here
Maybe I should forget this one

Howdy gentlemen. First off, my apologies Old Feller, I did not know you had undergone surgery. Please accept my best wishes. May God help you to a speedy recovery.

Now as far as riding is concerned, I do not know if I can make it to this gathering but it does sound like a lot of fun. Heck, I may even have to buy a pellet gun if I can show up.

Dave, that is awfully nice of you to accept all us old farts gathering at your farm. I hope I can make it.

Surgery is next week, but I'm going to be out of service for a while after that.

Dave's trip is likely the first one I'm going to try to go back on and that is likely to be driving up in a car.

I suspect there will be enough pellet guns for people to take turn shooting.

I reckon I'll sit this one out, there seems to be a fair bit of concern with my ability to keep up, and it's justified, considering my performance on the dragon
I'll miss the shooting, but no reason to drive or ride all that way just to do some shooting

I can be persuaded to participate. And, if necessary, I'll be the lead for a slower group. I do most of my riding on the Ohio side of the river so I'm not familiar with the routes Dave is talking about to take them super, super fast.

The only caveat is I was laid off at the end of December and only one of my current job prospects is in the local area. The rest will require moving.

No Super Fast stuff......if anybody wants that we will just hook them up with the Assphalt Junkies.

You, me and Blinky rode on Route 10 once, and Route 22 cuts off to the west and is very similar.  Route 165 from Mt Olivet to the Blue Lick Battlefield near Maysville is a really nice road and is a bit more open with longer curves and smoother paving.  Just about all of the roads in that part of the county are great roads with little traffic...although you do come up upon some slow traffic regularly.

On the Ohio side the roads are very nice, and maybe riding up along the river and to Pleasant Plain for lunch at the Plain Folk Cafe' would be fun.

And if any of the local fellows want to meet up for a ride.....we just need to figure out a gathering spot.  We could meet at the Shell Station in Wilder where the Aasphalt junkies meet....and then when they ride off - we could go the other direction!

I looked at the Wilmington Mile website to see if they had a speed weekend in August...nope, that could be when folks go to Bonneville.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the dates in August?  The Waynesville event is scheduled for July 22-30 - so to give as much time between the two events as possible, it might be wise to schedule the event late in August.  This will also provide Oldfeller an extended healing period.....and provide the best chance for him to bring his bike.

Unless someone comes up with a conflict and has a suggestion for a better date.....how about Wednesday August 24 through Sunday August 28th?  If you want to arrive earlier that is fine....or stay a bit later is OK - I am still working and will likely have to spend a portion of the 22nd and 23rd checking on construction projects so that I can take off the last 3 days of the week - but you can arrive whenever it works out best for you.  If you only want to camp a night or two that is fine. We have plenty of open area to camp, we have a very large covered porch where you can set up a tent if you want to be out of the sun/rain, and if the weather is incredibly hot you can put your cot or sleeping bag in the garage and I will turn on the A/C.  We have a grill and outdoor shower that makes it just like being at summer camp!  For the folks from the local area - we can meet at my house or pick a stop along the way to gather.

August 24th - 28th is the tentative date

Rides can be planned as the event gets closer.  Trips to Rabbit Hash Kentucky, Natural Bridge, Blue Lick Battleground, a ride between Ohio/KY on the river ferry at Augusta, and maybe a trip to Brown County Indiana are possible.

Supposedly I will be fully healed by then, but may not have a Savage by then as my wife and daughter and family are dead set on selling it during the 5 days I am in the hospital.

She can do that, you know, because she gave me the bike (it's in her name).

Women, they get all possessive and protective when you get your heart rebuilt because it brings home how dangerous all your hobbies really are and how little they like the idea of you being dead.

:P     I ain't fond of the idea either ......

So, faced with insurrection from wife/daugher/et al   ...... I grin and spend me some time studying the Kawasaki Vulcan S for $5300 for last year's model.

Well I am not a big fan of taking the Savage to a service shop when you could do the work at home - however.....that might be the perfect time to drop the bike off at the shop to have them change the air in the tires! ;)

Art, ya gotta apply some artistry to these sorts of things ......

I would just hang-dog and mope around a bit and she'd go buy me the Vulcan S (or tell me to go rent one for the trip -- same difference).

Depending on the valve I get riding a bike can become a high risk deal -- the daily warfarin dose that supports a mechanical valve means you become a practical hemophiliac (free bleeder) and if you have a big wreck you can bleed inside your skull and your chest, abdomen, etc.   You can catch mobile clots from any big bruises and throw a stroke, etc. etc.

A cow valve is much lower risk to a bike rider because it requires no warfrin, but it cuts 5-10 years off my potential life span because it wears out out in 10-15 years (20 years on the outside).

Choices, choices ..... don't you love them?

Hurley riders with mechanical valves and warfarin doses DO EXIST in their multitudes, but it gives their doctors (and their wives) the hives to even think about it.

Savage riders, riding at speed and having fun like we do?   I would be the first.

Oh, I've been married all my life to the same very good woman, who right now is very scared and is acting a little nutso over some fine details (like me riding a bike once I am a warfarin junkie).

The bike is hers and I don't care what she does, I will still love her irregardless, and she knows that.

Ipso facto, the bike will be there when I get out of the hospital.

I love her more than the bike, and that is what she wanted to hear.

And for a little brutal honesty -- with the mechanical valve I will be here long after my riding days finally end.

Picking a short term valve just to suit a "short term" hobby -- that ain't smart or right.

Plus, the way we are going with Obama & Hillary et al, by the time I am on Medicare for a few years they will be passing out Swedish sleeping pills to us and lecturing at us on "our responsibility to the next generations" instead of giving out expensive second surgeries.

Art:

I don't know about the others on this forum - but the time I have spent with Oldfeller, Lancer, old_rider, Springman and MMRanch has taught me that their marriage was made in heaven (mine too).....and although we might occasionally make a joke about the man/woman relationship in our lives - the fact is that we have very loving and caring wives and are committed to them.  They treat us very well, and give us a lot of freedom........there just isn't any humor in telling that part of the story.  My wife understands my need to have quirky hobbies, and is happy to let me go hang out with this group of Savages a couple times a year.....and she loves me enough to worry until I arrive home safely.

I am sure there are controlling and possessive women out there - but those are not the ones we married.

I hope someday you can find a woman that will change your opinion - it took me 38 years to find the right one for me! ;)

Yep, I agree.
When my first wife passed away I was not even thinking about another one.
But God had other thoughts in mind and so here I am with a wonderful woman.  We just had our 4th anniversary.
When I married her she came with boots, leather jacket, gloves, etc.
She was accustomed to riding which worked out great.
She also knew about the rides we do and ENCOURAGES  me to go.
She is a good loving wife.

Plus, the way we are going with Obama & Hillary et al, by the time I am on Medicare for a few years they will be passing out Swedish sleeping pills to us and lecturing at us on "our responsibility to the next generations" instead of giving out expensive second surgeries.

I would not presume to tell you which valve to pick, and i sure wouldn't tell you 'pick early death so you can keep riding'
that'd be bad advice, and advice I'd likely not take myself

Conspiring to sell a man's moto while he's in hospital isn't controlling?  ::)
I would strongly disagree with that one
reverse the roles
If OF's wife were the biker, and willingly gave it up to raise chirrun, and he rewarded her with a new bike once the kids were off on their own, (but kept the title in his name) and she was the one going for a heart valve now, and he was the one plotting with the kid to sell the bike while she was abed in the hospital, do you think her reaction would be as sanguine as OF's? maybe, but I sorta doubt it
I'm not calling anyone a bad person here, but a grown person isn't a child or property
I have been guilty of this myself, when my ex returned to the self destructive behaviours of her past, that weren't 'likely' to wind up in an early grave, but rather were guaranteed to
her reaction "you don't own me"
You say true, I do not
you don't own me, either
she didn't like it when I said that  ;D
Now, I didn't marry lightly or early, staying single till I found 'the one' at 28, and I thought I had a unicorn
it took hindsight to see the controlling nature kick in less than a year after we married, it was so subtle
OF voluntarily gave up riding once already, to make as sure as possible his children would have a father around to raise them, and that I salute
I do not salute a wife and child deciding to end his riding days against his will
Nor do I salute the idea that them doing this so blatantly he knew it, as though he is a child, powerless to stop it
His remarks re buying his own bike I do salute, that would have been a huge 'oh yeah?' to the notion of his powerlessness
As for me, the ex never was dumb enough to tell me 'you can't do that', no she was much more clever, using manipulation and shaming as a control technique, and I laughed it off too, but in trying to figure out what went wrong, I stumbled onto evo phych, and once I was aware of that, I became very sensitive to women's covert control techniques, as well as men's overt and unsubtle ones, I came to understand that me and the ex were both in the wrong, and both simply following our natures
Today if I date a woman I am on my guard against the controlling side of my nature, and of the covert attempts of my date to control me
that which has been seen can't be unseen
so far I have encountered no women who do not engage in this, just as I never found an animal that wouldn't bite if provoked
you fellows seem to have found the mythical unicorns, apparently. so congratulations, as for me, I remain free and independant, needing neither permission nor forgiveness
You're happy, I'm happy, everybody is happy

And OF I mean what I said, if you decide riding is no longer worth the risk, I sure as hell won;t say different, so long as it is your own decision, based on facts, not feels

Who said I was going to quit riding?

I take risks every ride we go on, and some of the potential go downs I have risked have been fatal all along.  Once I am recovered, I will ride again, likely for as long as I am able to do so.

My risk level is the same, 100% risk of death.   Always has been 100%, thinking otherwise is simply wrong.

Will I be taking risks in the future, sure.   I may temper those risks some more, as internal bleeding after a big wreck is a no-no now.

========================================

Art, I think what the guys have been attempting to tell you is that wives are wonderful things, and we cherish them and we listen to them when they are upset.    We don't get into ego wars with them, we have learned there are better ways to get past any obstacle.

Not listening to your wife when she gets upset is both wrong and stupid, any married man knows this as they will just ask harder for you to pay attention to them.

Pay attention, and the problems go away.    I paid attention, so I have no problem now.

And the point they raised was valid and I agree that getting an organic valve (which only lasts 10-18 years) just to avoid taking warfarin so I could ride a bike was very short sighted thinking.   Kinda silly, looking back at it.

Warfarin is a pill, you take it so you can have a life worth living.

I had to join in on this one.

First of all, way to go old.indian and Lancer, sounds like you both hit the lottery. Having said that, I cannot imaging bearing the pain of losing your first wife. God blessed you 2 with amazing strength.

I love my wife. We do not always get along great because we are both so pig headed at times. But what Dave said is so true, if we just stop to listen to each other we are always able to work things out. She encourages me to go on these rides and I encourage her to do her things. She will actually be going to some Mayan ruins later this month with her sisters. On this "tour" they hike around 15 miles per day 3 days to get there and another 2 days to a different pick up point. Yes, she wanted me to go with her, and yes I would love to go with her, but the limit for my back for standing/walking is 2 maybe 3 hours max. I am sure she will have a great time.

Well....one of the planned rides has gone up in smoke over the weekend.  The Rabbit Hash General Store is a local landmark, and it burned to the ground on Saturday night.  The store has always been a popular gathering spot - but more recently it has become a destination for bikers - and the roads from my house to Rabbit Hash are pretty nice curvy roads.

Not sure if it will be rebuilt by August.....obviously it won't be the original historic store anymore.  It survived many floods - but not the fire.

Luckily, there are some decent riding roads up here even if the season is somewhat shorter than it is in the OH/NKY area.

It will be interesting to see how easy the place is to rebuild.  My cousin is the head of the Boone County Building Department, and it will be a very difficult project to review and approve.  Old buildings don't have to comply with current building codes - but the old building is gone, and new construction is required to comply.  The old building is 10 feet lower than the flood elevation for the Ohio River and the building was flooded frequently, the building was built right up against the street without any setbacks, the porch didn't have any railing, the steps didn't comply with the riser and tread dimensions, etc.

It will become a wrestling match between "Historic Preservation" vs. "Building Code and Public Safety".   The County might be able to grant some variances in their County Code - but the Building Code is adopted by the State of KY, and construction in the Flood Zone is controlled by the Corps of Engineers.

Yep, HE sure is in charge...of EVERYTHING ALL OF THE TIME.
He gently nudges us when we start forgetting that; or maybe not so gently if we don't listen the first time.
Being ALL POWERFUL & ALL KNOWING,  even the thoughts and intentions of our hearts, gives HIM just a wee bit of an advantage in dealing with us.
It is SOOOO much better to just listen and obey the first time around.
It is less painful/hurtful & such.
When we go our own way we always "step in it" and hurt ourselves and others.  HE loves us and already knows the best way to go.

I dunno.....never been to the Natchez Trace.

I did go for a 100 mile ride yesterday....it was a good chance to look at the roads to see where we are going to ride in August.  I do take our local roads for granted - they are really nice 40-50 mph motorcycle roads.  Not quite as tight of curves as the Dragon, not as big of hills or swooping hills as the Cherahala Skyway - but they are nice and curvy and the paving is pretty good on most of them.  You do get behind a slow car, truck or tractor at times - most of the them they turn off pretty quickly and you don't have to follow them too long (They are not used to pulling over and letting you pass like they do in TN/NC.....this is not a hotbed of motorcycle activity - it is mostly just farmland.  The sight around corners was pretty good yesterday - the leaves and grass are not yet growing and you can see right through the wooded patches at the edge of the fields.

Dave  you remember :   The General Lee and Andy's car ?
Well we were with-in a .5 mile of the Natchez Trace then.
I was trying to get us on the Trace , and we zized-zagged all over it but never got on it.  :P   We passed under it (seems like a dozen times) , rode parallel to  it for several miles --- but some how kept missing the entrance ramps ???   :-X

That is a tough one for a lot of reasons.  The old building didn't meet the current building codes, it is 10 feet lower than the 100 year flood elevation of the Ohio River, and it was built with the porch right up against the street paving.  It has survived a lot of floods.....but not the fire.

It will be interesting to see how the Corps of Engineers and the Boone County Building Department can get around all the codes that wouldn't allow you to build anything new in that location.

Don't take too long getting ready.....we are all getting older!

Springman is the youngest fellow to join us on these group rides recently, and he may be one of the next generation of Savage trip organizers.

It is somewhat harder for the young folks with their work and family duties to get away for a few days.  As we reach Geezerdom our schedules are a bit more flexible, and the family members are glad to have us out of the house for a while.

The TN, NC and KY events are a bit far away from you.....MMRanch and I are threatening to have a South Dakota trip in a year ot two.

Put the new tire on -- after castigating the inspector for using a penny to try to judge tread instead of a real gage I got sick of his bullshite and left.

Cycle Max will mount a tire for $15 -- I didn't know that -- and they stand good for pinched tubes too.   We got one here in Fayetteville and they mounted my new tire for me and did a credible job of balancing it too -- $15

Honestly, we don't know yet.

First you get slack/rattle, then you put in a Slavy 2 hole tensioner extension.

I've done that, and I am now waiting for my original cam chain to start rubbing itself in the middle,  which is the next stage of things.

How long this takes, who knows?

Very very few of us go to the next level as we get old and die first ......

The thought of wearing through my two stored in oil superchains is sorta ridiculous, I can let one go I think.

OK. You were making me think that maybe at around 25K miles I should worry about this, but I guess not. Glad to hear that as suspect changing the cam chain is not an easy job. Thanks.

So you have any idea the measurement of the tensioner extension and mileage when you opened it up to do the Versy?

Some folks can get 28,000 miles before needed the extension, others only 10,000.

The versy went in at around 14K miles and it was just in the nick of time.

I've got 23K miles + ,  our Texas ride is coming up and that will add about 3000 more .   So by the last of April I'll know if 25,ooo miles is too many !  ;D

Didn't Lancer get-up the last super cam chain order ?

I'll put money up-front if anyone knows how to order more.  :-?

SpringMan new cam chain is not for the faint of heart !  ::)

Just kidding  ;D
Ain't nothing hard to do on a Savage !  ;)

OldFeller

If Dave all ready has his bike apart let him have the super chain , I suspect we'll get more before long .   I'm thinking :  I replaced the original on my 96 Savage at about 14K miles with the Super-Chain and a modify adjuster.  There were 42K + miles on it when I sold it with no rattle yet .   I think the original will do 30K or more.   I put a weaker spring (about 1/3 tension) when the S-40 was still young (+- 8000 miles) along with a modified adjuster arm that brought the adjuster almost to -0- zero on the used scale. ;)

During the winter of 2016 I'll put a new chain in no matter what.   I think the  S-40 will have 30,000 miles or more by then.

I keep it idled up and use the best oil I can get in it.

Some of those "PINK" bullets now , I might wrestle Dave over some of them !  ;D

Hay   ::)  --- YouzGuyz  would have an Idea of , "How long a cam chain can last" ?

Title: Re: August Event at Dave's - OH/KY/IND
Post by Dave on 03/11/16 at 04:26:55

It sounds like MM is in more need of a new chain than i am.

I only have 7,000 miles on my current cam chain......so I doubt I am in need of a new one.  But I thought since I was going to be in there fooling around to put in a Stage 3 cam, it might be a good time to upgrade to the Nitrided cam chain.

Lancer is having trouble getting though to the folks that make the better cam chain....maybe they don't want to build less than 1,000 at a time?

I put a really soft spring in the Rescue bike - but surprisingly the spring still extended the tensioner to where the original spring was.  I measured the tensioner extension, removed the original spring and put in the softer one, then turned the engine over a couple of times and measured the extension....and it was within 1/2mm of what the stronger spring did.  I do believe a softer spring might be able to get us a few more miles out of the chain.

Post by MMRanch on 03/11/16 at 07:23:33

Ya'll remember them old Honda's with the adjusters without the "Ratchet action".    So , one would loosen the adjuster keeper letting the spring push the chain tight --- then tighten it so it couldn't back up. --- Then repeat at the next oil change time !  :)   Back then I can see where the need for a strong spring was good.  How different some of that old tech was.   Like the "Cam-Action" valve lash adjuster on the old Honda 350 twin , I used to adjust mine with the motor running ,when it quit making noise it was right.  ::)

As little riding as I am getting to do lately I figure it will be at least another 2+ years before I get to 30K miles. If Lancer is able to contact the super chain manufacturers please let me know, I guess I could possibly be in the market for one.

And maybe what I'll do at that point is ride on over to MM's and get him to help me do it. ;D ;D ;D

Dave, it is early spring time.   You got you some new toys you need to shake out some before you trust it carrying your wife.

MM is headed for Texas on April 15th and for another Group Ride with his hurley group.   It is  April May June until our run up the Blue Ridge.   That is a long time to go rideless.

Wanna do a shorter mini-run one April/May weekend?   Something to stretch the new toy out and get the cobwebs out of the exhaust pipes?    Something smaller and more local so you can do it and shake out your own winter cobwebs at the same time?

I have a couple of days vacation time that needs to be used in April/May.

You pick this one, Mike picked the Blue Ridge Run.

MM, you gots rides & rides & rides coming out your ears this year .....  If Dave decides to do a shake down cruise in the spring to early summer (his busy time of the year) it might well be local and very short.    Whether he wants company or not is up to him

I may go to Wilmington NC to see my brother just to shake my cobwebs off.   Or Raleigh, to see my daughter.

Vacation actually GREW while I was out on medical leave -- gotta go kill a few which will regenerate again before July.

Short ride on the bike seems a good way to do that.

It will take me a month or more to recover from the last weekend we spent visiting my mother....and this weekend going to get the "NT" in "TN".  (NT700 in Tennessee).

I was able to go get my new (used) NT700 over the weekend, and my ST1100 is leaving tomorrow.

http://i64.tinypic.com/rbfcip.jpg

The wife and I rode around the block yesterday afternoon when we got back from picking up the bike in TN.  The smaller size and lighter weight is more suited to my short legs and small body size, and the bike has plenty of power and rides very nicely.  Loading the smaller NT700 is a whole lot easier and safer....the ST1100 is scary to load/unload by myself.

Way back on Page 2 the tentative dates were stated as August 24th - 28th.  I think these dates work out fine as it is a month later than the July event, and it also is after all my City Council meetings are over for the month.  I have adjusted the title for this thread to show those dates.

Dave. food for thought.

I have a 8 full size man tent, an old style 3 room tall rectangular canvas jobbie that I used to use to support AWANA PALS trips (think old style Boy Scouts).

If you want, I can bring it up when I come to wrassle catfish and we can see if it is all together still.

If you are considering hauling a massive tent around, this one fits the bill .....  (massive that is)

If it fits the need, I will give it to you as the SS Trip Tent (help support the cause and all that).

Tent space is not a problem - there is plenty of room in the garage which has a window air conditioner if needed...and we have a coupe of cots, 2 large inflatable beds, a couple of mattresses, etc.  There is an outdoor shower that is really nice (hot/cold water, solar lights), and I will make sure the fields are mowed so you can see the targets.  Somebody needs to bring their Catfish recipe and filet knife.  I will borrow some metal targets from my neighbor.

Also got some guns and ammo to burn up for when it is raining.

August 24 - 31st  vacation requested.   It is after school is in session, which complicates things a lot, but we can give it a go and see what happens.

Here is the weather bird outlook, very untrustworthy this early on.   Dave picked this period for best weather though, so I trust his judgement.

I wouldn't show up with a skinny pole and light fishing line.....there is a 40 pound catfish in the pond that surprises a lot of folks.  The last guy that caught him got 4 hooks out of his mouth - some folks just don't have strong enough line to haul him in.

I spoke with a friend last night that has been riding in this area for years, and he will help me map out some good rides.

It is all about the fun of it -- a 5 pound catfish would be a wonderful fight and that is about what would go chasing a little bitty buzzy thing tossed out into the water.

Bigger is just better ..... and if the line pops, so what?

MM's gonna haul one in and fillet it, and that will feed all of us anyway.

I have heavier stuff, and can get it out if needed.

Me, sitting in a folding aluminum chair, keeping tension on the come-along until the catfish gets bored and simply doesn't see the net coming up from the bottom.

Or me, holding the reel half of a broken ultra lite rig ......   could happen, as the line is over twice as strong as was ever intended to be used in that sort of wispy spinning rig.

:)

If you love Lancer and Verslagen and want them to be able to survive this trip and to do so this sort of trip again many many more times,  please contribute a few bucks to the "SAVE LANCER, buy a hygienic tent" fund today.

I am a bit worried about the "you get what you pay for" thingy.  Can you really get a new tent for $ 150 (used for $ 100) tent that is worth trying to sleep in.....especially when it is raining.  A tent this size is going to take about $ 50 worth of silicone spray!

And since Lancer is most likely already housebroken......we do have an extra bedroom in the house where he can sleep and plug in his CPAP machine.
(We also have a training collar that could be used in the event he is not yet housebroken.....it has one button that makes a soothing "reward" sound....and another button with an adjustable "correction" level!).

Did you know that the quart bottles of tire shine (if you read the label carefully and get the right stuff) is 100% thick silicone oil, suitable for waterproofing nylon tents?   ( Hint, sniff it before you buy it )

My one man is a fine nylon that needed lubricating (folded layers had gotten sticky with age and heat) in addition to needing a waterproofing booster shot.   Same stuff I used on the rat pecker tracked canvas big tent actually .....

ARP !!!!!!     Watch that button, buddy .......

I can always bring Big Green if the guys are up to a little silicone sniffy wiffy do.   Big Green don't leak -- we smeared rat eyeball jelly over the double lapped canvas seams to make sure they were properly ossified .....

Title: Re: August Event at Dave's - OH/KY/IND - August 24
Post by Oldfeller on 07/07/16 at 11:49:15

It wasn't really rat eyeball jelly, it was silicone grease.

The trick is the nylon fabric has a pre-existing impregnation with silicone grease and rain water can't get a grip due to osmotic tension, it rejects the H2O molecules.

Same trick works with canvas, get the silicone grease established and the water just rolls off.

We stayed in a "Camping Cabin" in Texas and it was fun after Versey got an anti-snoring pillow .   ;D ;D ;D

next time we should all get one of them !  ;D ;D ;D

Really it is kinda neat to split a bunk-house !  :)

My 8'x10'x72" has a zipper problem in the door now (only 1/2 way opens now) its still usable .   It wasn't new (Ebay) so I don't have a guarantee but the extended plan would be good on a tent.

Sniff the tire shine before you buy it -- some smells strong compared to others and you want the least smell you can locate.

Being straight silicone oil, it can also lube a zipper jest dandy.

Dave's tent disappeared off of Craigslist .....   sold, I suspect.

MM:

I have a boat load of those illegal advertising signs that people put up illegally in the public Right of Way - they work great for stapling targets to.  I don't have any steel targets - but I believe my neighbor has some we could borrow (provided Oldfeller doesn't have really hot rounds that will punch holes in the steel).

The garage is nice and will have an window AC unit if the weather is horribly hot (we can turn off the motion sensor light so you don't turn the lights on every time your roll over).  I have 3 tents that can be used, and you can either set them up in the woods, or on the large porch as long as you put something heavy in them to keep them from blowing away (no anchors in the concrete porch please).  I have 2 cots, 2 foam mattresses, a big inflatable air bed.  I don't think we will have any problem finding a place for folks to sleep.  I have an outdoor shower that is really nice, it has hot water. solar lights, and is really nice on those hot summer days.

I have 1 or 2 fishing poles that work - but nothing fancy.  You need to bring a good filet knife and your catfish recipe!

Post by Oldfeller on 07/26/16 at 09:48:21

I would not shoot a .22 spinner target with a real rifle, you'd fold it up where the round struck it even if it didn't punch right on through.    Rifle targets are more sturdy and all rounds I would bring are lead cored rounds.   Some of the '06 stuff is military full jacket though, so your pistol type steel targets should be avoided.

I've got some of those poly plastic cardboard signs too, so I won't bring mine but will instead bring a chronograph so we can speed test some stuff.

I will bring 3 fishing rods, with one set up for 40 pound catfish  ~ 80 pound test braided line ~   going on down to 12 pound test on the middle rod and super fine ultra lite 8 pound braided on the little rod.

Got no idea what Dave's catfish like to bite upon -- we got time to figure all that stuff out I suspect.

If I show up around noon - 1:00 pm on Tuesday the 23 that gives Dave a potential afternoon's worth of help mowing grass, setting up a tent or moving picnic tables or whatever else he needs done that afternoon.   No matter what he plans, time tends to get all crunched up at the end by something, and a little help right about then is useful.   Dave does not need to kill himself over getting ready for us, in other words.

Plus, zero on the rifles always needs checking as I cannot remember what I zeroed them to last, and I hate handing somebody a gun that is shooting off to the side because I was playing with something strange last time it was shot.

Rifles all have light triggers and they all kick -- stay backed away from the scope end bell and dry fire it a time or two before cranking in your first round.

:)

The big catfish seldom comes to the surface....I have only seen him come up once to eat the floating fish food I throw out.  It scared both of us when we saw each other....his face is twice as wide as mine!

It has been a couple of years since anyone has told me that they hooked him and brought him in.  The last time he was brought in the fellow removed 4 hooks from his mouth - not everyone that hooks him can bring him in successfully.

Carrying guns to scoot and shoots

Don't laugh -- and remember to put your guns out in the open inside your locked trunk area if you have one, or inside a locked case if you lack a trunk space to lock them up inside.   If you have a trunk, you don't need padlocked case as the trunk itself locks.   Put the rifle cases in plain view, don't bury them in stuff that may be considered "concealment".  Pull the bolts and store them with the ammo -- making the rifles non-functional removes any probable cause from the cops side should they decide to go after you.

Do not throw a blanket over the guns or wrap them in blankets if they are inside a common space of the car -- this makes it a concealed item and it upsets the police greatly.

Keep the ammo stored separately (in a different part of the car, in-accessible relative to the guns).  A locked suitcase works good for that, or a tool box if your truck has one.

When approached by a cop, put your hands 10:00  & 2:00 on the steering wheel in plain sight and politely tell the officer that you have rifles stored in the car but do not volunteer where they are (he'll ask where, so tell him but then be firm that he has no right to search your car or your trunk).  If he asks where the ammo is, tell him where it is but be firm that he has no right to search that part of the car either.   Offer no further information -- any information given can be used to excuse some further searching.

A traffic stop gives the cop no right to search areas not in plain sight, unless you are dumb enough to give him permission.   Don't do it, as highway patrol people are especially bad about tearing your car up looking and then stacking up a ton of little violations if given permission to go looking for them.

With all the shootings lately cops are VERY concerned about people going from A to B carrying weapons.   Be very polite, but firm --- no searching your car.   If they insist on searching anyway, ask what gives them a reasonable probable cause to do so and do not refute what they say as you ARE going to court now and YOU WILL NEED A DEFENSE LAWYER .   It is time to ask for your lawyer as you disagree that they have any probable cause at all and then SHUT UP TOTALLY.

Faced with a dubious car search of a knowledgeable, lawyered up traffic stop, most cops will give up, write you the ticket and let you go.

Unless you did something stupid to give them probable cause, that is -- so drive somewhat carefully and don't do anything stupid.

You are living in the Obama Age -- be smart about it.

I tell'm they can look anywhere they want... won't find anything, and it will waste their time and mine.
I don't carry alcohol or drugs (unless the alcohol is in a sealed store container and the drugs are in a prescription bottle) so I have no worries.
Guns are registered to me and I have a concealed carry that "almost " every state co-ops with florida.
If you don't give them a hard time, they won't give you one.

Texas had no gun registration, so my guns are not 'registered' but don't need to be,
I should probably get my CHL again, travel across state lines involves diferent 'legal carry each state
Some you have to do like OF says, and some the guns can't be concealed, which to me means they gotta be where a cop can see them during a traffic stop
I used to be OK with car searches, too, untill a Texas State trooper once left me with a citation... and 2 hours work putting all my stuff back in my car on the side of the road in the Texas summer sun
Since then, they don't get 'permission'  >:(

We have been very warm and humid - but the thunderstorms just keep coming back every few days.  We had some really hard rains on Thursday and Friday....the roads were full of gravel that had washed out of driveways, and a lot of culverts overflowed.

I have not been able to keep up with the yard work very well this summer, as it seems the rains comes when I could mow...the dry weather occurs when I am busy at work.  The weeds are growing really well, and they seem to be overpowering the grass.  Normally July/August are hot and dry, and the grass stops growing until the wet fall weather returns.

I totally understand Dave, so many things to do and so little time, so many things that get in the way like weather and such.  We found a solution for us and that was to get professional help.  Yep, we hired a nice dude (firefighter from Okmulgee) with a big 0-turn mower and with lots of energy.  What took Paula and I together the better part of a day to do, he can complete in less than 2 hours...and it looks a whole lot better to boot !
2 acres to mow and trim and all for 1 bill twice a month.
Yep, it is the best deal we have made in some time.

Well, I got all the gun cases lined up and I have all the ammo I am bringing all packed up as well.  Tackle box (minimal) and fishing poles are ready.   Bike is ready, trailer is ready.

Listening to MM, he plans to fish some in the early mornings.   I can copy that, I like to catch fish and hooking on to a big cat would be a lot of fun.

Rides are fun too, but if I get Dave to set up his gazebo shelter over a picnic table we can have alternate entertainment on a rainy period (and we got some possibility of that on a weekend day showing up in the forecast).    As a group, we like to shoot so that poses no real hardship on us.

Company will be good, location is optimal.  MM will figure out catfish bait and tackle I suspect, with input from Dave over what has been historically successful.

My dirty trick will be to toss a tiny 1/32 oz rooster tail out there and hook up a little brim or such, then let it swim around bleeding out the mouth until a big catfish smells it and gobbles it up.   Once the brim is firmly in the catfish's belly, well, that's my "hook".

I hope Dave's pond has no dead wood still sticking up from the bottom, or my brim may get me completely and totally tangled up by the time his catfish comes around to get him.

:)

We will go with the weather and folks desire for riding/fishing/shooting, etc.  On Friday night, or Saturday afternoon/evening....I thought we might have a combination Catfish Fry/Music Party/Mortgage Burning party!  We were able to pay off the mortgage on our house last week......after 22 years of being in debt....Woo Hoo!  I could invite some music friends to come over and play, and we have an extra guitar or banjo to loan to anyone that wants to play along (MM plays guitar and will most likely have heard the Appalachian tunes we play).

For rides......there really is no agenda and we can just play that by ear and go where the wind blows us.  There are plenty of good roads to ride - and most likely a good place to eat lunch before heading home.

Is that one a training collar or anti-bark collar?

My beagle got the exact same training collars -- he needed it because his natural bark is a MASSIVE BEAGLE HOWL.  And, if he was outside and caught a scent as a young puppy from that instant he only had one direction that existed in his mind, right up until the collar buzzed, then he'd startle and begin heading for home.    He got shocked a few times because he was WAY WAY WAY out of sight and being right slow about coming home, but he'd make it back right quickly after a zap in the throat.

He's a mature dog now and will come home to his modulated whistle, and if I move (whistle location moves) he picks the pace up right smartly because that means I'm coming for him.   He figures if he beats me back to the door he is home free (and if Mommy is there he's already let in by the time I get there).

Well.....should we do a ride on Thursday morning that goes down to Louisville to meet MM?  It takes a bit less than 2 hours on the interstate - but there are some really nice back roads (Route 22) that would make it about a 3.5 hour ride.

What route are you planning on taking MM....maybe we can figure out a place to meet if the others are up for a long ride on Thursday.

I am not all that interested in long Interstate riding, that last ride from home up to that termite mound that we visited in Franklin told me that I have a brand new riding issue that is associated with my taking warfarin to thin my blood to keep my valve from clotting up.

I actually grew a line of blood blisters on my arse that followed right up the seam line of my pants .....  my wife was amazed at the linear precision this entailed as she smeared skin cream on them and all the while she persistently told me I should stop riding the motorcycle.   The root of that problem was that I rode up in the middle of the night (took my pills before I left), rode all that day, and when I woke up the next day I took pills again and rode another 9 hours to get home.  Too many miles, too many sets of pills (3) inside the same 48 hours -- I blistered my own arse so to speak.

I will monitor my PT-NR number closely and keep it as low as possible pre-trip (keep my blood from being too thin and keep the blistering issues down).    I may also avoid some of the longer rides, or abort half way and find my phone GPS way back to Dave's farm.

:)

OF....you definitely did push the limits on the Waynesville event.

Since it appears that everyone except MM is planning on arriving Tuesday night, we can discuss the Thursday activities on Wednesday.  MM can also let us know about his chosen route, and maybe we can meet him somewhere closer to home.  Route 22 is a nice road and one that we will likely ride sometime over the week - but perhaps not all the way to Louisville.

Maybe one or more of us might ride to meet MM....and the others can return to work on getting enough catfish caught for the Saturday night cook out.....I really don't know how long it will take to catch enough fish to feed us properly.  I expect there to be about a dozen of us eating that night.

Sounds like Weds is a fix bikes and fish sorta day.   Or shoot, as I got some development series to run too.   We gots lots of stuff to do, no doubt.

From what I read, large catfish should be filleted and skinned, then soaked in brine water in the fridge for at least overnight to keep the strong taste down.   I see electric knives being used to do the filleting .....

This means fishing  Weds Thursday Friday to cook on Saturday ???

Yep.....4 days of fishing before the cooking.  I guess we need to figure out how to clean and prepare the fish after they are caught.......I haven't ever cleaned a catfish!  I have stopped feeding them so they get hungry and will take your bait......and if all else fails we can feed them and just scoop them up with a net during the feeding frenzy!

There are plenty of nice short rides around here......you don't have to go far to find nice country roads.

MM is our resident expert, but I can fillet and skin and brine what we catch until he arrives.   I am bringing an electric knife and I think You Tube has shown me the slick quick way to do a big catfish electric style.   It takes 15 seconds a side for an expert to do it, so it will take me several minutes at least.

:)     ..... and yes I washed the blades after trimming my last car tire ......

Brine is a weak brine, a teaspoon of salt for a big glass bowl of fillets, overnight soak, trim all dark stripes and TRIM ALL CATFISH FAT off of the fillets.

Dark blood stripes and any fat at all are BAD, so we cut it all away .....

I haven't even looked at possible routes .    If I put a GPS address into the Garmin and have a backup paper direction then I should be good.

Dave , how long did it take you to drive from your house to mine ?

Fuel Stops every 150 miles w/5min.-walk-a-bouts should add an hour to the trip.

About them Cat-Fish --- I like to cut the "MUD-STRIPE" out before cooking them.   I like Captain D's fish taste ,  I've had some catfish at restaurants that was plain nasty tasting .     :P

I need to cook for our Wednesday night group before I leave Thursday morning (have to keep the peace in the family).  ::)

MM.  Mapquest says it is right at 6 hours-from your place to mine, and that time is proven to be a "non-stop" time.....and that route puts you on the Interstate Highways as often as possible.   Even in my car I can't keep up that kind of a schedule on trips that require fuel and eating stops.  It will most likely take you 7 hours at a minimum with stops....and I believe that is about what it took me when I drove my car/trailer.

Route 22 east out of Louisville would add about 2 hours to the time you are riding (probably 3.5- 4 hours from Louisville) - but those extra hours would be on really nice back roads through lots of hills/curves and small towns.  Not sure if you are up for another 3-4 hours of riding after having been on the road for 4 hours to get to Louisville.....with your bike all loaded up.  I might be able to come out and meet you in Louisville if you want to ride in on 22.....not sure if Verslagen or Lancer are up for it.....Oldfeller will likely stay home and fish!

If you want to just cruise on in as fast as possible....stay on the interstate and we can figure out what to do once you arrive.

MM....no need to bring a cot, or tent...just pack your personal stuff.  I also have plenty of garage space for the bikes, and plenty of trees and tarps to make shelter.

Nobody needs to pack chairs, or cots or mattresses unless you have something your really like.  I have 2 cots, a couple of different foam mattresses, and I have tents and my little trailer is also available.

Shooting wise, I have plenty of foam earplugs, and about 3 sets of muffs.  Bring whatever you want to shoot.  My neighbor has metal targets we can use, and I have paper targets.  We can put a picnic table out in the field, and a 10' x 10' canopy overhead to keep the sun that will be plentiful everyday!

I have 2 fishing poles - 1 is my grandads open reel vintage piece - but it works.  The other is a entry level Zebco thing.  If we need more we can borrow some from my neighbors....as I let them fish over here all the time.

I will PM everyone my address, and the coordinates to my place.

This week is rain, rain and more rain....next week is looking good!

My wife would like to have an idea what folks want to do for breakfast.  How many coffee drinkers?  Cereal, yougurt, pancakes, bagels....or do you folks want to get out on the road and ride somewhere for breakfast?

I usually have a yogurt cup in the morning , or a muffin with a cup of coffee.
then a light lunch , and a hardy supper in late evening.

but

anything will be alright !  ;D

put my name on one of those cots . ;)

Lancer , is REX coming to the party ?  :-?

The weather around here for the last week has been awful.  It has rained everyday, and a lot of the storms have been pretty intense.  The storms are not continuous - but do prevent any kind of yard work.  Today that trend is supposed to change, and it is forecast to be dry for several days.  Near the end of the week it appears that some pop up storms could be in the area.

Yep....that is one of the issues you have to deal with when you are young and starting a career.  At this point in our lives, us old guys have a little more flexibility in our schedules.  And.....I am so daggum busy at work that I only got to use about half my vacation last year....and I have about 15 days of vacation to use up in the next 4 months.  (It is going to be tough - but somehow I will drag myself away and get them used up!)

Stew I've got a few Snakes .   You know King Snakes eat poison snakes when they meet and they compete for the same food in the same places.   In our area the King Snakes are what we call Black Racers.   So , when I find a Black Racer I'm happy about it !  8-)
I did find a Copperhead once.   She was sunning on a big flat rock that I was bush-hogging around ... I had three shot in her before the tractor even got stopped !   One shot ripped open her side and baby copperheads poured out (10-12) of them.   You remember how the good Lord told Josha to leave no survivors and he would have no more problems ?  Well, I did what Josha failed to do --- and I ain't had no more problems.   ;D

The Sportster only has problems with snakes when we are leaned way over when we find one.   I think it rattles me more than it does the Sportster , that business of side-stepping six inches while leaned over makes my my heart skip-a-beat sometimes .  :P

Well we have been busy, and not many photos or stories so far.

The majority of the catfish catching happened on Wednesday.  We started fishing in the afternoon, and since our pond is mostly a "catch and release" situation for some of the neighbors, and since I mostly feed the fish old bread or floating fish food....the fish don;t seem to bite on normal bait anymore.  The best luck was had by putting the hook in bread floating on the surface......and the one really big catfish in the pond never comes to the surface.

Versy has a fish that fought pretty good.....and MM is ready to net him.

MM doing the network!
http://i64.tinypic.com/2q3vxw8.jpg

Thursday morning we did some bike wrenching, then went out to the field and did some shooting.  Lancer was the "Big Man on Campus" with his 45-70, and was shooting off the bench, then had to show us that he could hit stuff 150 yards away with his open sights and while standing out in the sun.  MMRanch brought a bunch of ammo for his little Contender pistol that has 3 different barrels...and we shot up hundreds of his rounds trying to hit stuff 150 yards away with a pistol....we had trouble hitting the target at that range - but we were always within a few feet from what we could tell by the little dirt spray we could see.  Then Oldfellor got out his rifles....and Versy was trying to set the woods on fire with his blackpowder pistol.

The bench and tent....Versy, Oldfeller,MM & Lancer.

After the shooting and a snack, we went on a ride and we headed over to Indiana so MMRanch could mark that state on his map of places he has ridden, then we went to Quaker Steak and Lube in Florence, KY for their bike night.  We saw hundreds of bikes, then went inside to eat.  Inside the place the walls are decorated withe bike parts, and there are motorcycles and cars hanging from the ceiling to keep us entertained while the food is being prepared.  All us gearheads walk around the place looking up at the ceiling.....it is easy to run into each other while walking around!

Not sure what is on the agenda for today....most likely a trip down to Augusta, KY and a ferry ride across the river to Ohio - so MM can cross one more state off his map.

As someone who is not typically a fisherman I want to verify the size of the catfish being taken out of Daves small pond. After catching them the fish were put into a big wash pan (2' dia.) and the fish had to curl their tails because there as not enough room.  Virtually every fish caught was like that.

Today we got up and Lancer got his Kawasaki front pulley mounted.....now he cruises around with about 400 less rpm at 60 mph.

We took a bit of a spirited ride down Route 10, made a few fuel/rest stops on our way to Augusta (Rosemary, Nick and George Clooney's home town), and we ate lunch there.  We then got on the ferry and crossed the Ohio River so that MMRanch could get his Ohio Merit Badge (he wanted the state marked off on his US map of states he has ridden in).

http://i63.tinypic.com/axhd1c.jpg
http://i66.tinypic.com/28v8sw8.jpg

After we took our bikes for the boat ride, we rode over to Bore Tech so I could drop off a cylinder head, and we talked bikes for a while with the owner Bill Moeller.  He has an AJS motocross bike, A Bultaco road racer, a Sears Benelli, and a 1962 Honda 50 in his shop reception area.

After that we rode back to the river and rode to Cincinnati on Highway 52 along the river, and we got wet in about 2 miles of rain....then we rode to Eli's and ate good BBQ for dinner.

Tomorrow...more shooting, some more riding, a catfish fry in the evening!

Title: Re: August Event at Dave's - OH/KY/IND - August 24
Post by Dave on 08/28/16 at 09:51:39

Saturday was the final fun day of the event......more riding, shooting and eating!

In the morning hours we all washed the bikes, as we had gotten rained on the previous night while headed to dinner.  After drying them off and putting the finishing touches on the shine....MM did a bit of primary chain maintenance on his Harley, Versy removed the Fuel/Air meter that confirmed his carb was doing well, Lancer mounted a tool roll on his forks, and by then it was lunch time.  After lunch we stuck Versy on the little Ninja 250, and rode the Honda NT700....and MM, Oldfeller and I went on a nice frisky ride on Route 10, 22 and 139.  Versy did great coaxing the little Ninja around the curves - and he learned how to shift the little bugger down 3 gears everything you exit a corner!

We then headed home and got ready for the catfish fry.  I had made the mistake of putting the leftover fish parts in the trash can, and after 2 days or ripening...the stench was awful!  I removed the fish parts out to a field a long way from the house - and it was impossible to get the smell out of the cans....Clorox and water failed to remove the smell from the can (I have it sitting out in the sun hoping to bake the smell out).

MMRanch and Oldfeller cleaned the fish on Thursday evening, and the fish were soaked in brine solution and that was changed once or twice.  MM had a batter recipe, and he and Oldfeller cooked up the fish, and my wife made the hush puppies.  It was incredible how good the Catfish tasted...I have never been a big fan of catfish as it tastes a little fish....this catfish was incredible and tasted much like Grouper or some other ocean fish - not like something out of a pond!  After eating we lit a fire a sat on the porch, and my wife and I played music with our musical friends that also came for the fish fry.

Well, I am at home and unpacking all the stuff out of the car.  Sure goes back into its cubby holes quicker than it get packed, that's for sure.

Interesting Facts

Verslagen caught the biggest catfish, 12-13 pounds by my guesstimate.   It was big enough that I had to fight to get it folded into the net, it made a "U" shape to fit in there and as mentioned before, it did not fit the tub without overlapping itself as it circled in the tub.   Verslagen caught the most fish by count as well.

It took two of us to get the bigger fish ashore -- they were too heavy to lift with the fishing lines we were using as the catfish would not touch a heavy line that they could feel as they approached the bread bit.   I was glad I brought a fishnet with me .....

Because it was a two person job, you won't see any fishing pics from the folks fishing, as we were all VERY BUSY at the time.

Yep, unless one of the non-fisher folks took a pic or two you won't see the big tub of fish and you certainly won't see a pic of the cleaning as everybody went somewhere else in a hurry when the fillet knife came out.    Messy.

MM is a great catfish person, he knows what he is doing.

Rides were great, and we went on at least one a day.   I especially liked the little sharp hills that got you some negative G force generated going over the sharp crest and then there was a turn right after the crest that you entered while your shocks were still settling from the jump.

Dave, so light and trim as he is, he could tromp on all of us on a roll on race even on his little Ninja.   And once again, another Sportster has to admit it cannot keep up with a Savage unless it gets the drop on them and once the Sportster gets a lead started Savages simply cannot win the lead back as the big difference in top end puts paid to the contest.   A Sportster's top end is 50 mph up on a Savage you know, so if you get behind at the start, that's all folks.   If the Savage gets the drop at the start, the Sportster cannot catch up until over 85 mph.

MM did something to his primary chain system again messing about with us and he has noises and tics and vibrations that he is now puzzling through.    We hope he hasn't killed his Hurley again messing about with beating us.

We trained Dave's dog Lilly to be MM's licker alarm clock to get him up in the morning --- a very dedicated puppy that one .....  MM woke to a wet Lilly kiss in his ear most mornings.

First we had to show Lilly how to open the door to the tent, after that it was all natural as Lilly loved MM's ear a bunch, he tasted so good.

MM taught Lilly how to talk in dog talk, seriously.   Dave's perfectly well mannered dog learned several new things from us, and was sad to see everybody leave.

And here is the fiddle and banjo pickin' session, with Dave and Deb playing along with their musical buddies.

The fire is a Swedish Candle, a log with three equal vertical cuts going down the length of the log -- the trick works great, one log makes a good 2-3 hour fire, then it is gone with the one log being completely consumed by the heap of coals from the sliced uprights.

We were pretty lucky with the weather, with only a single rain event that hit us for a couple of miles on Friday.....and a couple of miles on wet roads on Saturday.

On Sunday afternoon we got the tent down, and then had to quickly move it onto the porch without packing it - as the wind made it impossible to fold and had started to sprinkle.  The rain then set in very heavy, and it rained until very early in the morning.  Those gravel driveways down the street had a lot more gravel washed out onto the street - and there was a lot of local flooding.

Thirty minutes later as we were leaving Guess who came by ???    :-?

We went from the Pizza place to give our bikes a boat ride across to Ohio river and instead of waiting for the ferry-boat to get there --- we just drove right on and the boat took off !   I'd never give my bike a boat ride before (I think it liked it )  ;D .   There were two Older Harley Fellers on there with us too.  There was a feller on the ferry (in a car) that wanted a bike so bad he was drooling !  .   Well, when we all cranked-up to leave he didn't stop drooling and get back in his car till we were circling the parking lot to regroup ,  I could under why -- the whole day was going just perfect !  :)

The feller on the right in the black shirt .  ;)   We talked , I instructed him to wait till late January when  the Christmas credit card bills come in and Ebay is flooded with bikes  !  ;D

Tea and Crumpets --- almost tastes as good as pork chops .....

I didn't see what they did for a reaction as I was well gone by then.   Either bike should have been able to catch and pass me if the rider was able.   When I waited at the next intersection and you guys pulled up all in proper order I assumed you had passed them as well (grind it in, grind it in, grind it in).

So they sped up, huh?   Same reaction between a Crumpet and a Hurley then "That fat old man simply can't be passing me on a puny 250 single cylinder Granny bike !!!   Inconceivable !!!   Hit the throttle, Sam, full speed ahead !!!"          next corner .... yikes !!

I went fast enough in the next little section to catch a little zero G air (or mebbe some severe shock lift) cresting the sharp little hills leading into the next turn --- that was fun too.    I wanted to make them fight a bit when they came after their revenge.

Actually, the whole area was under stocked with Hurleys, Mike's was the only one available to pick on.

Now let me tell you about BIG catfish and ultra lite rods.

I spent 2-3 hours learning how to catch one of Dave's catfish.   First, they will not touch an artificial anything (but the brim and the bass will).    Second, they will not eat live bait, especially anything that is moving around.   Third, they will not hit meat (but the brass and the brim will).

They will consistently hit a small to medium chunk of floating bread, but only after circling it twice to check it out good.

Line size is everything as they circle the bait, 8-10 pound nylon line gets detected about half the time and the fish leaves.   If one fish slaps his tail in the water all the fish in the area run for deeper water ....   but you get another chance shortly as the endless rotation goes by.

What is needed is Spyder Silkpatented line, line with a high breaking strength (10 pounds) but the size of 4 pound test nylon line.   Beware of imitators, Spider Wire is slightly different stuff and it seems to be more widely available --- who knows, it might be better.

When you are casting nothing for weight (a hook and a piece of bread) a free casting ultra-lite is just the ticket.

Dave's fish circle the side of his pond about 4- 8 feet out from the shore running in line with each other going counter clockwise.  Spacing between fish is about 3-5 feet and by doing this they can scent the whole pond continuously.

This helps, as a bungled cast or other noisy operator error will see a new crop of customers in about 5-10 minutes as the fish rotate around the pond.   You cast, make a splash, scare off the nearby fish then you wait for the new customers to rotate around the pond.   If your bait is 5-10 feet out that's golden -- jest wait for it.   Catfish hunt by scent, but Dave's fish are right picky as to what they will eat.

Casting at visible fish is a waste of time, it scares them off 100%.   These fish hunt by smell alone, so your bait has to sit and trail odor off into the water.  They like them blueberry English muffins they do ..... even better than plain bread.

You sit there with an open bail, waiting for a big cat to take the bread floating on the top of the water.   You can see the big dark shadow as the catfish circles twice checking for line (spyder silk is neutral buoyancy and stays right under the surface) then he turns and runs straight at it and swallows it whole.   No joke, a couple of them came straight on to me and I could see straight down their gullets when they took the bait.

One of the ones we caught had a 8-10" mouth on him, seriously.

The line then rolls off the bail as the fish continues his endless counter clockwise circle while he swallows his dinner.  Give them at least a count of 10 to swallow the bait.   I learned not to strike the hook so hard as I was breaking the line off at the nook at first but instead I just start with a light tug and begin retrieving line.   The hook biting into his guts makes the fish take off like a freight train and the drag buzzes as the line goes out.   The fish actually finishes seating the hook all by himself .....

The the fight is generally 10-15 minutes long and the catfish's guts aren't nearly strong enough to hold the hook at that level of stress, so the hook rips on up his innards and generally winds up caught in the very corner of his mouth, lodged in the gristle joint.   All the damage done to the inside of the fish's guts helps shorten the fight time, which is a good thing, I guess.

It takes two of us to bring the catfish in and net him.  You have to lay the net on the bottom and cajole the fish over the net, then raise it up and fold him in half to get him into the net.  My net's rim opening wasn't big enough and if I planned to do this often by myself I'd get a larger diameter long handled salt water style net.

Dave's catfish roll when they get desperate right up at the shore and the sight of a 13-18 pound catfish rolling reminds you of an alligator rolling.   Rolling means they can't fight effectively or veer off, so it is a straight pull towards the net at that point.

We threw away 35 pounds of stripped carcasses, a catfish is mostly head and ribcage and guts.   Killing a catfish is hard, driving a knife through their head won't stop them from wriggling, nor will repeated blows from a hammer.   Gripping them by the eye sockets and the tail fin and firmly holding them works, but it takes two people to fillet a wriggling 13-18 pound catfish one to hold the knife and fillet, and one to hold down the wriggling catfish.

The fillet meat was flawless however, no dark mudstripe at all on these fish.  Overnight in a brine solution yielded wonderful non-fishy fish fillets that MM cut into long strips so they would fry up evenly.

Well the Catfish Saga is almost over.

Saturday afternoon I took the stinking/rotting garbage that included fish parts out into the field, and I had the unpleasant job of separating the fish parts from the trash.  I left the fish parts in the field for the Turkey Vultures, and packed the garbage in a trash bag and then hauled it back to the house and double bagged it, and set it up near the end of the driveway to get it away from the house, and would set it out for trash pickup when that day arrived.

Last night I went down to the pole barn and the place smelled horrible.  I looked around and found that I had put the carcass of the fish that Oldfeller caught and cleaned on Wednesday night in a trash bag and set it in a plastic bucket in the pole barn.....where it sat for for 5 days in the heat! (I had intended to do something with it the next day...but I had forgotten about it).   I loaded the stinking maggot infested bag into the tractor loader bucket and I hauled it out to the brush pile and dumped it.  While I was in the field I looked for the other fish parts I had put in the field on Saturday - and I saw that the Vultures have completely stripped the meat off the bones .....there wasn't a speck of meat left on them anywhere and they look like those fish skeletons that you see in the cartoons.

So - I have learned that the fish carcass needs to be treated with urgency, and disposed of immediately!

I really need to get out that way at some point and do a bit of all that stuff with ya.   Life just doesn't work that way right now.

Guns, we need to bring smaller, quieter shorter distance type stuff to be shooting.

Dave's long range range has such a steep hill on it that you can't go check your target (unless you are VERY fit that is).   We used binoculars and my 24x scope on the 30-06 to check the nearer targets, but nobody could see the holes in the longer distance targets at all.

If there were any, that is.    Shooting straight downhill plays hob with "set on the level" scopes and it also does strange things to the post firing ballistics .....

Everything we shot was generally low (or high) by some fairly considerable offset amounts too.

Adult air rifles off the back porch would be better suited than what we tried this time out.

And in truth, the eyes in our group simply aren't so wonderful any more ......  Lancer did well with his 45-70 and open sights, so the eyes thing isn't an across the board thing either.   MM did well with the 30-06 and Versy was clunking the big tin can regularly with the short rifles.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. I wish I could have been there but it was my Dad's 91st birthday on Sunday the 28th. I arrived at his home in Atlanta on Thursday and got back home last night. It was really good to see my Dad enjoy himself so much.

I probably could not have done much of the physical stuff with you guys anyway as I injured my knee a few weeks ago. I had an MRI last week and went to the doctor for the results today. We suspected a torn meniscus which would have probably required surgery, but MRI showed a bruised and bleeding bone instead. Six weeks of "take it easy" and I should be OK. The Doc said to ride bike and or swim. I wonder if he meant the motorcycle? ;D

I fed the catfish last night....and their routine is back to normal.  There are still plenty of fish in the pond, and they ate normally and didn't seem to notice that their number had been depleted a bit.

Dave, I seem to have inherited some magazines of yours.
When Mike and I were packing up he thought the stack on your kitchen island belonged to me.  Apparently it was because a magazine of mine was laying on the countertop next to the stack of yours, so he picked them all up and packed them in my truck.  We did not realize what had happened until we got to my place and unpacked.  I will be glad to send them back to you with the Raptor if you like.

Lancer.

Those magazines were nothing special.....don't send them back.

My wife will be glad to have them out of the house!

The "fix" for the '06, 308 and other long range stuff at our ages is a 12" x12"x 1" steel plate hanging from a support.  Makes a nice "clang" to indicate a hit and saves a lot of walking .  (Note: 1/2" and smaller tends to get punched full of holes, even at 500+ yards.)

Glad you made it home Versy......you definitely had the longest round trip - something close to 5,000 miles?

Last night my wife and I ate the last of the leftover Catfish.  She heated it up in the oven.....it was still excellent and tasted better than any Catfish I have ever had at any restaurant.  I think it was just as good as any Grouper that I have ever eaten!

Lily is missing you all, and she is dragging her favorite "stick" around trying to find somebody to play with.  She is also learning to speak when you ask her "Whhaaat!" - MMRanch started the training, and she has just about got it down pat.

I think Lilly got used to the large amount of attention she was getting from everybody.   She is a very sweet puppy though, and deserves some play time.

Yea : She is a very sweet puppy though, and deserves some play time.

I miss waking up mornings with a wet ear !  and the smiling dog standing there .  :)   but I'm afraid to tell my wife about missing the ear thing for fear of her trying to make me feel better .     ;D

Little water (size) Balloons make great air gun targets  and they come in 100 count bags for a buck twenty nine . !

Dave , I had a great time on this trip !  8-)

I have to agree, it was a very good trip Dave.
The roads in that part of Kentucky were just great !
I don't remember a single pothole of any kind and even a patch was pretty rare.  That made the ride so very comfortable and just plain pleasant.
The roads you chose for us to ride could not have been better in my mind.
I loved your house and your garage play room too, everything thought out and well chosen.
When is the next ride ??  [ch128512]

Stick? thats a tree! LOL.... she looks like a sweet girl.

If I had not gotten this new job I'd have been there.... I go somewhere every year now, seems like its a "must do" thing :)

When my 90 day new employee session is over, I might take a 4 day weekend trip.

Looks like everyone had a great time at Dave's, and looks like Lilly was a good hostess :)

Satan is busy every day , trying to shut-down any evince that God's word is true.  Some folks even think there ain't but two forces in the world and three kind of people.   Yea , those who knowingly work for the "two" forces and those who are sometimes used by the the two forces.   I'm sure at different times I've been in at least two of these  camps !  :-/

Dave , you live closest , how about checking "The-Rest-of-the-Story" for us .    Our Church Youth Group want's to do a trip to the Ark .
