Title: Crankshaft balance shaft bearings gone.
Post by buffyporson on 11/11/15 at 10:06:02

Just wondering if anyone else has experience worn crank balance shaft bearings. I have 24,000 miles on a 1996 Savage. Noticed the engine getting rattly recently and suspected the cam chain. I pulled the RH cover and cam chain was fine. Instead of I found the RH balance shaft bearing completely broken up. Never heard of this happening on a Savage. Does anyone know if this can be replaced without having to split the crankcase?

I've never been in there but I seriously doubt it. :(

Sorry to not be more positive.
It will be interesting to see how many other cases of balance bearing failures there have been. I'll bet it is pretty rare.

How long have you had the bike?

I believe Verslagen has been through this.....I don't know of any others.

yes, been there, done that.
replacing the bearings require that you split the case.
I recommend you do it before the balancer starts hitting the bottom of the cylinder.

Had the bike about 9 mo. I do about 250 miles/week commuting. Rather disappointed this went after only 24,000 miles. Always looked after the bike with regular oil changes etc. The RH bearing has completely broken up with most of the balls missing and the cage all chewed up. Requires a complete engine strip to replace.

So the next question that will be ask is.....what brand and type of oil?

I sympathize with you.

It makes me wonder what the previous owner did to it. What kind of oil etc.

I started using cheap Walmart brand 20/50 - clutch slipped. Changed to Shell Diesel Rottela - clutch still slipped. Changed back to Walmart brand. I have also tried using the different length clutch push rods which also made no difference provided the clutch cable was adjusted correctly.

That was a different 1986 Savage I sold in 2014 with 35K on the clock. I've only had this one since Feb this year and done a couple of oil changes   using Valvoline 4-stroke M/C oil.

The
Wrong oil
in our bikes will mess up the clutch and/or cam/rockers.
I wouldn't run that oil, because IDK if it's got what it takes ...
But, the crappiest oil should not cause that, IMO. Stuff breaks.. it happens. That's a rare and very labor intense problem.
You might consider just stuffing a used donk in it,, and then make a project out of this one. You would be in there, get it bored, get a cam,

I've always wondered about the balancer and how well it actually works, did they Really get it right?
Bang for the buck, Proven to keep it alive, best deal

Not sure if this helps or if it's even the same bearings as mentioned but according to the Clymer manual persistent engine noise can be caused by excessive clearance in the main bearings.

Is the main bearing the same thing as balance shaft bearing? I often find it hard to understand which part the manual is speaking of.

both the main bearing and the balance shaft bearings have separate bearings
