OK, I spaced the stuff out and plugged in dates when there was something going on in the area.

Big Dog goes to first part of October, which is before heavy leaf season but is when Bryson City does all their "large folk events".  Robbinsville and Fontana Village does some too, but they are "younger" smaller towns.   For those who go, we WILL be doing a late night ride down the road to nowhere and through the tunnel of No-Return to see if we can catch the bears or mebbe even the Dragon itself all curled up sleeping in its fall den.

Next, Thunder Run and Twisted Sisters are fairly close in calendar/time location.   If MM and Old-Rider are going to try to do both, consider moving the Thunder Run to some other time/occasion.   I am game for any move you may want to do.

Dave's Farm Run has a mort of things going on in Cincinnati in every month of the summer.   As do the surrounding towns.    Plus, there is catfish wrassling and MM's flat rock cookery.  And shooting, too.   And the resident turkeys are fair game according to Dave's wife, just bring you some grass seed to draw them out of the bushes.

Looking at it, I think we have more stuff than we can do.

How about each of us say their favorites out of the list and  lets see how the distribution goes.

I like Thunder Run, Dave's Run and Big Dog the best.

One of the things we might consider for the trip up to Dave(s) place, is the possibility of an overnight stay on a longer ride.  We could ride down to the Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge area, or the Mammoth Cave area and camp out for a night or find a local hotel.

Title: Re: 2016 Ride Schedules and Planning Thread
Post by Oldfeller on 10/20/15 at 15:15:49

Sounds like a most excellent suggestion.

We have a long history of taking little over night trips, on some of the exploratories we did the dotted line trick and never stayed in the same place twice.  To save convenience and hauling space we stayed at cheapie hotels that we found using Kayak or Priceline.

Adjust the length of your trip accordingly to give enough time.

Well I know I'm doing the sisters again, we'll see about the rest
NC was pretty far over my head last time,, but the thunder run sounds interesting if I can swing it, and I ain't seen the beautiful state of Kentucky that I recall as of yet

It should go without saying ... but I'll say it anyway !   I have room for over-night-ers' on the way too and from events , in Lynchburg Tn.  The living room has 5 recliners and we have one spare bed (most of the time   :-? )
There is also all the tenting room (up to 100) , fire pit/sitting wall , and covered bike parking (up to 20) .    Bring something to throw on the grill and your favorite beverage (w/moderation)   ::) .

I'm thinking yes on :
Texas
Florida
Kentucky
Blue Ridge Parkway
Retirement life is GREAT --- go with it the first day you can.   Spair time with little money is better than lots of money with no spair time .  ;)

Hay ! ... if there was one of our members in the "Kentucky Ride" overnight ride area (Red River Gorge ) that could ride with us --- that would make it even sweeter !

I think we are finally doing some real ride planning ......

We'll go see Dave's farm (and think he underestimates the fun we can have shooting and fighting catfish on ultra lite tackle --- throw in an overnight to someplace scenic and it will be quite a trip.

In 2017 we may do something similar from your end of things, who knows?

And you are right, we don't have to spend a mort of money to have a good time.

Yup, I may trailer or haul to Dave's thing so I can bring some of my toys

Art, I don't like to fish  ---  I like to catch.

It's all in the artistry and fish fooling (cheating) that gets the job done.

Well, down here its all flat roads and beach, unless you guys want to swim in the gulf for the first time, just to say you did it.

I am about 45 minutes from panama city and usually take a semi-scenic route to get there, once there, panama city beach is PACKED with bikes... and about 4 main venues to go look at stuffs.

It lasts for about four days, the fifth day vendors are usually packing up to leave and there a only a few hundred bikes :)

Still it is something to see and do for a couple days... april might be chilly for dippin' yer toes, but if your from up north 60 degrees sounds great :)

In all my time down here (off and on for about 25yrs), I've never really looked for historical or entertaining things to do as the beach, bar and seafood thing pretty much keeps everyone busy... and I like to shoot pool and throw darts and have been active in those leagues for a LONG time.

There is parasailing, deep sea fishing, dolphin cruises, and in fort Walton there is an indian mound museum (drive by it all the time, have never stopped in), and SEAFOOD... TONS of it. (I don't like seafood, but can stand to watch folks eat it while I munch on my steak or burger).

Most things down here are tourist trap things....which mean moola'... the beaches are free, the gulf is beautiful and the traffic is horrible during spring break and mid summer :)

Like I have said.... do a "google" of the area and i'll go check out what folks think would be interesting to see or do :)

If anyone needs a free overnight camp spot in route, feel free. The 5' flathead catfish in our pond is fair game, as are the channel cats. Coyote and feral hog open year round, no limits. Plenty of Osage orange trees in need of eradication for bowyers.

Can tent host pretty much unlimited numbers.

Nothing th fish for or shoot at (maybe the neighbors if they get stupid  ;D) but I got running water and a fair bit of ground, and one crappy little portable barbeque pit  ;)

After the two girls in panama city, governor scott had some regulations put into law about the safety elements of parasailing companies.
Up until 2013 parasail companies could do as they wished as there were no laws or regulations pertaining to them.
I would say it is 80% safer now....
As with anything that flies, you have risks, this pertains to anything that moves.....hint...hint... but of course if you are 40 feet in the air and fall, its going to hurt really bad....if you fall off your bike going 40mph, its going to hurt really bad.... LOL.. six of one, half a dozen of the other!...
But of course you won't be 40 feet in the air on your bike, well, lets hope not anyway! ;D

Looking at Old_Rider's general local, he isn't far from New Orleans.

I understand that to him this is all old hat stuff, but I've never been to New Orleans, ever.

To me, it would be worth the ride.

I never been there, either, though I understand it's best to visit after dark
I'm not much for drinking, but I don't need to drink to have fun, even in places where others are drinking (sometimes especially in places where others are drunk  ;D)

Count me in for the 3 sisters and at least one other event. I've never been to KY so that sounds appealing, but so do the other rides. I guess as we get closer I'll see which one I can swing.

Title: Re: 2016 Ride Schedules and Planning Thread
Post by springman on 11/07/15 at 17:14:56

It's been over 30 years since I went to Nawlins. It is probably only about an 8 hour ride from Houston. That could be fun. And yeah I'm a light weight so if I'm riding I ain't drinking. But I don't need to drink to have fun.

OK, MM, I can pick you up at Atlanta Ga and put you on the second rail of my trailer.   We can then proceed to Old_Riders place and unload or, if we want to do it that way, we could do the New Orleans thing first and just trailer the bikes all the way down to the big O.

Meet Springman and Old_Rider there and do the town, then separate and go back to Old-Rider's house.

MM, tell me how wide your rear tire is.   Rear tire width at the bulge in the sidewall calls the shot on the rail width.

Dave, if you are going to go you need to say something .......   You know you are invited and you could be second rail on MM's trailer and we just meet down there, or if you prefer your enclosed trailer we can do it that way too.

Homeless residents

A challenge facing New Orleans was the exceptionally large homeless population created by Katrina. The number of homeless people living in New Orleans doubled to 12,000 people between the hurricane and mid-2007.[15] With a post-Katrina population of 300,000 people, this meant that 1 in 25 people were homeless, an extremely high number and nearly three times that of any other US city.[16]

Most of the homeless were Katrina evacuees who returned to higher rents or who fell through the cracks of the federal system that was to provide temporary housing after the disaster. There were also some workers who came from out of state for the post-Katrina rebuilding boom but who subsequently lost their jobs. [17]

Compounding this problem, the number of beds for the homeless in the city decreased from a count of 2,800 before the storm, to 2,000, as of May 2008.[18]

I would say the $29 fleabag hotels are likely just that, and perhaps we might not want to stay there.

Title: Re: 2016 Ride Schedules and Planning Thread
Post by Art Webb on 11/08/15 at 09:35:36

Thant's pretty sobering, though most homeless won't bother you beyond asking for handouts, there are some who can be difficult
what's the status of carry law in FL?

on an unrelated note, my plans re rides might be chnging
I went to an RV dealer the other day and saw a 21' that I really want, so I am now saving for a down payment
hopefully I can do this and still have money for getaways
I don't really need a new trailer, but having a flush toilet, a shower, and more room to move about shure would be nice
If any of you is ever in the market for an RV, and you have a choice, don't buy a 'bunkhouse' stick with a 'coach', especially if you are even thinking of full timing

OldFeller

Thanks for the invite !  :)

My rear tire is a Mitchelinl Commander 140/90 , but its 5.560" wide (just put the calipers on it).   I'm thinking  ::) next tire might be another Dark-Side Goodyear Eagle GT 145/80.   The Mitchellin only has a little over 18K-miles on it and its more than 3/4's wore out.  If I had left the Goodyear aired-up (35-40 lbs) I'd still be riding on it.  That last Dragon ride with only 25 lbs in it - ended up with ripping the cords  from the rubber.  :'(  the Goodyear had over 25K-miles on it and wasn't even half gone yet !  8-) Its on my hayrake now , still getting use out of it. ;)

Dave if your ridding to Orleans , then over-night here in Lynchburg and   we could escort OldFeller from Atlanta (kinda like a Presidential escort -sorta) ;D.

New Orleans is 3 hours and 31 minutes from the house according to google.
In reality its about an hour longer than that with construction and traffic, and then maybe filter in a couple of stops.....

I haven't been there...except to drive through it, some friends from the pool league have lived there, I can inquire about where to stay and what to see.

Old_Rider, where is that 3 wheel Elio motorcycle car place?   Shreveport?  Are they letting people in to see the plant yet?

The Texas guys might want to check that place out if they are giving tours of the plant.

Post by Oldfeller on 11/13/15 at 03:24:11

I think MM is going to both rides, and I was suggesting it for the Texas guys anyway as Shreveport is closer to them.

Old_Rider is up on that Elio stuff and would likely know if they were up and running yet.   Having checked myself now, the answer is no -- they are in engine testing mode now having built the first 80 engines.

The whole project looks interesting, but likely is going to be relatively slow becoming "buy me real" around the country as the dollars involved in a new engine and a new vehicle from the ground up are astronomical.

Elios the man seems to be all in, and he is making progress on filling his initial orders (the $1000 paid up Beta people).   These units will likely be somewhat hand made and will likely involve prototype tooling on all the pieces.

I tend to think of it as a race now --- will I be able to buy an Elios or a LENR room heater first ????

I like the concept of the Elios but I could never get into and out of one easily.   When I was younger, I could though.

Title: Re: 2016 Ride Schedules and Planning Thread
Post by Dave on 11/13/15 at 05:45:12

I am most likely not going to be able to do the Texas or Florida rides - they would extend my long weekend rides out to a week or more with the travel time to get to/from the ride areas.  If next year is anything like this construction season I just won't be able to leave town for more than an extended long weekend.  Most of my trips are the kind where I leave after work on Wednesday and am back home for work on Monday morning.  It is good to be busy and have a job where you are missed when you are away!

I have not found a particular event in this area yet that would make a certain weekend better than any other for coming to KY.  Most likely weather would be the deciding factor.  This year was a weather fluke and June/July was the wettest weather in the last 140 years.....generally the spring rains have gone away by then and the dry summer months have started.  August might be a good month to do something up this way.

Hey OldFeller, I did not know you were interested in the Elio. I am very interested and hope they really do get it off the ground. I told my wife I might buy 2 of those if they get to be anywhere close to what the marketing specs say. I don't believe she was overly excited about it. ;D

Title: Re: 2016 Ride Schedules and Planning Thread
Post by Steve H on 11/13/15 at 18:25:21

Springman,

What I've seen of wives and cars is that they consider it to be a large appliance/rolling sitting room with much fewer amenities than they feel they deserve into which they must cram themselves to get from A to B.  They could care less about the technical capabilities, achievements, fun or anything else.  The more luxurious and comfortable, the better.

I would love to see the Elio take off and be available everywhere.  I could certainly use something like that since most of my riding is single passenger and the bike just isn't practical in many locations for all year travel. I hate cold. I'll ride in the rain but won't like it. I'll ride dirt bikes in ice and snow but not a street bike. It's balanced all wrong and has no traction.

If you get to go on a tour please post up some stuff.  I'd love to see it.

Well, OF, guess you beat me to it...

But no, they are not doing tours... yet. Or accepting applications yet either :) I would probably move if they hired me (well, maybe)....

The wife and I went to see it when it came to Birmingham Alabama (5hr drive) and she fell for it.

Problem is, even though we are all in for $100 (least amount to get a reservation number) she probably won't see it until early or mid 2017. AND her Hyundai won't last that long!
She might have to lease a wreck until her number comes in.....

Both you and Dianna fit in that vehicle well.  Me, being too creaky, both me and the wife need the easy entry sort of vehicle.

I am a Cube sorta guy and I already own my perfect car.  I can only get my standard old plain 35 mpg, but that is OK with me as I fill up my 10 gallon tank every two weeks.

But I can follow along the Elios story and I look forward to seeing review of the Prototype #5 upcoming "soon" with the actual real motor and the final door size and roof height -- both VERY important to me that the roof be higher and the seat be less of a "crawl in".

MM,

Dave isn't going and I can drive past Atlanta on the way to Florida, so we could meet up and load your bike on my trailer if you want to do that.   Or you could ride, if that's what you prefer to do.

This would require me to go ahead and do the second rail, then loading your bike using a larger version of the strap pull system (that I already have) to make your bike come on up the sloped load rail by breaking the hinge on the trailer.   We may have to load your bike backwards to stop the handlebars from interfering, but that too is completely doable with two people.

Shouldn't take but a half hour to load with one of us making sure the bike stays upright while the strap pulls it up incline.

If you guys insist on going to New Orleans, stay in Slidell. Much safer all around. 20-30 minutes from the Quarter.

Or if we still have the Bay house, I'll talk to the fossil about using it. 3 bed, 2 full bath, triple lot on a salt water canal. Bay Saint Louis Mississippi. About an hour outside the Quarter.

I'm going back to work this afternoon, so any summer plans for me just got scrambled like a dropped egg.

That would be about half way from Old_Rider's place to New Orleans proper.   Closer and very much on the way.

Plus no 25% homeless population to deal with ......     ;)

If you could put your's on in reverse then I can just wheelie mine on when I meet ya !  ;)

we may have a plan ,  8-).

One of the roads in the KY area that I recently found, is KY 165.  It is about 30 miles long I believe, and is kind of like a Cherohala Skyway at 1/4th scale.  It takes me about half an hour to reach this, so it is not always available to me - when I reach the end of it I am an hour from home.  There is a good place to eat when you reach the end of it, the Blue Lick Battlefield is a State Park and they have a good restaurant.

You don't need to watch the entire video....but scan around and you can get an idea what the local roads are like.  This one has more straights and sweepers than most of our rural roads.

This video is Route 10 and Route 22.....I ride these roads a lot as the Route 10 is only a mile from my house.  If I want an hour ride I take Route 10 down to Brooksville and turn around.

With all the crap i'm going through this month and next month, i'm not too sure about any spring riding.

I still have to get the back worked on.... and that will most likely occur around Christmas or early January.

I can still house a couple of folks if you are passing through, but not sure i'll be able to join the group.

It's up in the air, but I don't let too much hold me back :)

Dave isn't going and I can drive past Atlanta on the way to Florida, so we could meet up and load your bike on my trailer if you want to do that.   Or you could ride, if that's what you prefer to do.

Shouldn't take but a half hour to load with one of us making sure the bike stays upright while the strap pulls it up incline.

OldFeller , does pulling a trailer just KILL your MPG.   On my little Sonic w/1800cc motor it sure does , especially in the hill country.   but yea if your car will pull them we can surely get them loaded.   I had the thought of taking the bed cover off my Ranger and trying two bikes on it also.   I understand two other fellers here figured that one out already.   The Ranger has the 4.0L engine and it don't care what kinda load its got , its 23MPG empty if its treated nicely

Oh, not this boy I am afraid.

Right now my big debate is "Should I become a partial cow zombie or a warfarin addicted Borg" for the rest of my life.    In any case, I have an appointment with a scalpel week after next to have a new lower heart valve put in.

I am aiming at going to Dave's this August after I heal up good.   I may be just driving the Cube if I haven't healed and recovered well enough to ride long distances, but I can sit and shoot some if that is the case while the rest of you run off and have fun.

Depends on finances
Me and Springman did the 2 S40s in a Ranger thing last year for the dragon
personally in you and OFs spot I'd have him come to your place, load the 2 bkse in the trailer, and pull it with the Ranger
loading on a trailer is easier unless you have a loading dock (on BOTH ends) and the Ranger is built to pull
We just staggered the bikes so the bars of one were behind the bars of the other, but even 1 S40 won't ride in a 6' bed with the tailgate up unless it's kitty cornered, and then the fender and plate rub the tailgate

Un-stickied.....and likely to fade off into oblivion!

The last scheduled summer event is the group ride at my house coming up August 24 - 28 (some folks are arriving on the 23rd and may stay a bit longer).

If you are in the area and just want to come over for a day/night and fish or go on a ride with us......let me know.  We might ride to Quaker Steak and Lube in Milford on Wednesday night, or the one in Florence on Thursday night.....and maybe to Fuel on Saturday morning if you want to meet us there.
