Title: What's that?
Post by Violent_Rage on 09/09/15 at 01:36:07

Googmorning everyone (well it's morning here...),

today I gave an eye to the belt and I noticed these spots.
I'm pretty sure that until yesterday afternoon was all right.

What could be?

It appears some kind of liquid has been splashing on the belt while it was ridden, and has dried and left a stain behind.  About the only thing that might drip anything over there would be the drain tube from the air box (which should have a cap on the end that is removed to drain it when you do an oil change).  The only other possibility would be some residue left from when the bike was last washed and ridden with a wet belt.

Scrub it off.....and see if it comes back.

I would wet is and smell it. You may be able to determine really quick what it is.

is it only on half the belt?
looks like some left from washing the bike.

Could be that if you didn't move the bike much after a wash (or rain) and there was water puddled on the belt (or dangling on the bottom of it)....it could have left those marks as it evaporated.

Do you have any male dogs in the area? ;)

LOL well yes but he didn't pee over my bike! :D

I haven't wash the bike and it didn't rain.
The belt has spots on both sides.

I'll call Jessica Fletcher!  ;D

Is she good at cleaning up bikes?

Probably not, but she is good at solving mysteries!  :D

I'll do as you suggested, I'll try to clean the belt and see what happens...

Whatever was on there ran to the left side of the belt when it was on the side stand.  Get a damp paper towel and rub it on there and see if any color other than black comes off.  Give it a sniff, too.
Clean and see if it comes back without riding in rain or sprinkler run-off.
I notice you run without a belt guard.  If something was leaking on the belt while riding, it would have been flung all over the place.  Any unusual stuff on other places of the bike?

note the following, which is important. the edge of the streaks are black and shaped like an elongated "u" perpendicular to the belt with the open end to the left. look closer and note that the straight black edges of the streak are positioned precisely over each raised spline in the rear pulley. that is very puzzling and has to tell us something. did the belt or pulley get hot and change the molecular structure of the belt in those spots. I'm spitballing here, but who knows.   hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

If you run your belt too tight - it will make small cracks in the outer rubber coating, and these tend to make white streaks across the belt along the cracks.  However.....this belt certainly looks like something liquid has deposited a stain or coating on the belt.

Did you spray degreaser on the hub?

No...

I clean only a small area, let's see what happens ...

I wasn't suggesting.
The marks on the belt look kinda like a spray cleaner shot at the rear hub as the bike was rolled or rear wheel off the ground and rotated.

I agree with jog2.... it looks as if something was sprayed from the brake side towards the belt side.... while rolling or on jacks and spun.

I understood!  ;)

I just followed the suggestion of Dave and I cleaned a small area of the belt. But then it always rained ..  :-X
