Title: 97 ls650 oil and filter question!
Post by chasethorn on 06/20/15 at 15:27:53

hello! Simple question I can't seem to find a straight answer to. Where can I get an oil filter from without ordering one? And what oil should I use on my bike? First bike and I am not sure ...

As for the filter, dealership or an independent bike shop.
None have suffered a failure that could be blamed on oil using Rotella T.

Post a pic or list the info on the box so we can double check this for you.
we might even learn something.   8-)
You might even list which walley world you got it from... anyone up for a raid?   ;D

Sorry for the late reply! unfortunately I threw the box away but it was a KN-137 oil filter I believe! They only had one and I asked for more and the guy in the parts section said they don't get them often as he recalls and he doesn't know if he ever will again. it was kind of near a little motorcycle isle that also had other mc type products... I live in Colorado springs and this store was near AFA for any CO members.

Also! I got some castrol GTX sae 10w40 oil... will that work ok? I hope so...

Wrong oil, clutch slip, no ZDDP, cam damage.

Can't go wrong with Rotella T

Yep, that's the stuff.  I've been using Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 which is a little better but a lot more expensive.

That's the stuff! Remember, these bikes were designed in the mid 70's and the engines and clutches were designed for that type of oil. Cars have changed a lot over the years, and the oils used in them have changed too. Current gen car oils will ruin our old-school bikes in short order. Rotella T is the cheapest oil out there that is compatible with these bikes. You can use Harley V-Twin or Redline if you're feeling rich or think you need a premium oil, but most of us use Rotella.

Now, some of us feel the ZDDP level in Rotella is a little low, so you can get this stuff and jack it up to where it was back in the 70's when these bikes were originally designed.

Castrol 10w40 is not 'energy conserving' and will not cause clutch slip, in fact it's highly recommended in the Honda Rebel by folks who know that bike the way we know Savages
it does lack ZDDP though, which is bad in a Savage

Yes, that stuff
Rotella is not 'diesel oil' it is 'general use' oil, and is JASO (Japanese motorcycle) certified, use it in good faith

bolded is what I responded to, in your post I quoted the first time, since you mentioned clutch slip, and wrong oil, in response to his post about Castrol 10-40, I figgered you were saying Castrol 10-40 would cause clutch slip
10-30 Castrol will, but 10-40 is ok aside from the lack of ZDDP

and agreed, buy 3, 4500 miles rack up quick sometimes
