Title: Immigration fix........
Post by raydawg on 04/18/15 at 07:27:38

Lets see if we can have a civil discussion on a current topic  ;D

I will start with some thoughts of my own.

I am not sure if the courts are the way to decide the issue, or an executive action, it seems to only add more wood to the fire.
I would think our elected and social leadership would have found a way to address this issue humanly by now, but sadly it seems we are no closer to a fix than when Reagan was grappling with it.

I will speak to one of the arguments the right offers against the left, that Obama is only doing this to get voters by "giving" them stuff.
If you look closely at the "folk" we are talking about, they are not looking for handouts, they came here for "work".
Have you ever stopped to think about the deep conviction and self sacrifice a person must exhibit to leave behind all that they know ( comfort of family, friends, etc)  with hope of finding a better life for those they left behind?
How can you fault them and attach a negative perception upon them?
Their very action shows me they have the right attitude re: work ethics and family that are assets, not liabilities to our society.

How we as a wealthy nation nation can incorporate them into our fabric of daily life is the question.

With the "middle class" backbone that holds a democracy together, we need more of them, but it requires jobs for all to work.

I can't help but see a correlation ( in my mind anyway ) of how environmental restrictions put upon our manufacturing enterprises, similar to the water issues California is experiencing, has impacted our ability to create these middle class jobs in the manufacturing industry.

Proof in that is the dwindling labor union membership.....

I remember early on in the environmental movement people forecasting these results, as they shared these environmentalist "beliefs" where akin to a religion, often not provable but "believed" with a faith mentality, and policies were decided accordingly.
The very reason our founding fathers included the separation of government and church, because they knew of the possibilities such a mindset would effect a society to its detriment.

Opps, sorry for the diversion  ;D

Anybody want to step in?

Raydawg - I am a very conservative Republican, but I'm not a Tea party type of R.  Frankly, I agree with your comments about immigrants coming here to work.  I find most of the Mexican immigrants I know to be fine people, who only want to have a decent standard of living.  I bear them no ill will; in fact, I welcome them.

Personally, I would demand such things as an immediate end to any form of bi-lingual society.  When my grandfather came here from Switzerland, he quickly learned to speak enough English to get along, then mastered our language in a couple of years.  Any person who speaks one of the European languages, and naturally we're talking about Spanish, can learn enough English to at least get along fairly quickly, due to the common alphabet.  It might be a different story for a person from Asia or the Middle East, but not for Mexicans.

My grandparents didn't even speak German at home - they were in America, and spoke English to their children.  I just don't understand the concept of not forcing immigrants to "fit in".  Even in clothing, the European immigrants of 100 years ago immediately adopted American attire.  Yet we see immigrants now who think it's OK to wear what was once considered bizarre attire.  Sorry, if you don't want to talk like, dress like, and act like Americans, just please stay home.

Interesting discussion.  My, POV, as follows.

Quote:
“… If you look closely at the “folk” we are talking about, they are not looking for handouts, they came here for “work” … “

I believe, that, USED, to be the case. Not any more. Now, 70+% are; “Whyat’s Free”.

Quote:
“… Have you ever stopped to think about the deep conviction and self sacrifice a person must exhibit to leave behind all that they know …”

Very valid.  I, would like to go to Spain, Portugal, OR even Italy, and willingly start a new life, (With a S-40 of course).
I would Not, expect to ‘get’ something. I would strive to learn the language, I would work, I would Not. be a anchor about the natives life, causing them more tax money, to take care of me.
And I Could do that, ‘properly’.   But if I, ’sneeked’, into one of those Countries, or the VAST Majority of Countries, and was Caught!
My Azz would be in Jail, in that Country, for a Very, VERY, long time.

Gee, I could so easily, just, walk in to Canada. Change my name, do all the things that all others do, and live off the very generous Canadian, 'welfare' programs.  BUT, If i was Caught, would I get a free meal, and a free bus ride back to the States?
Or ya think the Canadian Government, might have something to say about it?

And of course, one could do the same going into Mexico.
But if you are caught, you are, most probably, never seen again!

Quote:
“… How we as a wealthy nation nation can incorporate them into our fabric of daily life is the question …”

Again, ‘USED TO BE’, not any more.  And it was ‘used to be’ because the vast majority of people that migrated here, worked here.
And came here TO work,  Not get, ‘FREE”.
Used to be, a, ‘few’, sneaking into this Country,  (not the ones that wanted to work, but the ones that came for a handout), were ignored.   But when the ‘word spread’,  that the, ‘gime-gime’ers’, got a free ride.

More, and More came, and suddenly, it was like a room, with 1000 set mouse traps, each with a ping pong ball on it. Ya throw in, one, ping pong ball, it sets off one trap, now you have 2 balls setting off, two traps, with 4 balls in the air, setting off 4  traps, then 8 balls setting off …  You see how Fast it increases?    That is what is happening now.

And as another poster said:

Quote:
“… Sorry, if you don’t want to talk like, dress like, and act like Americans, just please stay home …”

I have wore, Lederhosen, probably once every two years, for a day.
Not, EVERY Day.
I know my Father never wore them, most probably my Grandfather never wore them.
Could be my great grandfather, wore them once and a while.
And no doubt my Great, Great, Grandfather, (When he was NOT, in the Country), wore them a great deal.

So, in a nut shell. This is STILL,  ’The Melting Pot’.  Just don’t SNEAK in.
And, if their were less, that, 'SNUCK', in, their would be so many MORE, avenues, for Legal Immigrants.

Which reminds me.  A, ‘Jay-Walking’, segment of the Jay Leno TV show one time.
Jay asked the question of a, 30’s +/- person, well dressed and groomed.
“ Describe a, ‘Illegal Alien’.”  And that person confidently said:
“Oh that would be a person from MARS”.

Well, there are several interesting aspects  already brought up.  I agree that any immigrant should get a limited time of government support, including an immersion English as a second language.  All  our immigration policies seem to be is a culling of the best and brightest and occasionally, taking in a few of those silly enough to support us in wars in their native lands, making them pariahs when we get bored and leave.

Part of this situation is indeed the lack of good paying basic manual jobs that allow a new person to support himself while learning the ins and outs of our systems.  I think very few people come here for a lifetime of handouts.  They usually want simply a place to live in peace, security and reasonable opportunity to earn a good living.  Most people flee their homelands due to endless wars, deprivation, cruelty by their government or the neighbors.  Religious was continue all around the globe:Christian vs Muslims, Catholic vs Prod, Sunni vs Shia etc ad nauseum.  Then we have many countries with several major ethnic groups; each group thinking the other group is shafting them (often true). African tribes, middle eastern tribal wars, south American tribal wars , Indian subcontinent..unbelievable.

Both sides have had ample opportunity to enforce immigration law.

I second that.

May I humbly asl to join this discussion, because...
...from 1968 to 1973 I lived in the States as a "guest" (regularly registered foreigner)

My father had the opportunity to send my brother and I to an Italian school run by the Embassy, it was there and available to us, but he (wisely) chose to make us go to local public schools.

I quickly learned (it was a very steep Learning slope) and I quickly fit in, with bloody noses, torn shirts and... lunch money...
I quickly learned to stand up for myself.

However, I need to point out that, honestly, the USA is a Nation born out of immigration, created by English and German expats who either left because of dire situations back home,
or (let's not forget that) because of HM's Court sentences deciding "thou shalt be confined to the Colonies for 20 years" etc...
Anyone who has studied some history or even just read R.L.Stevenson or Charles Dickens must be very well aware that is how the 13 Colonies, Australia and New Zealand received a sizeable portion of their original population.

Of course, these days someone will come and say "I am an original American, I descend from the Pilgrim Fathers".
Yes, I accept that, and it would be silly not to.
But it is just as true that America, i.e. west of the Appalachians, was settled by families in search of a better future and improved living conditions.

In the 1950's, films and television alike widely and proudly publicized "the self-made man" and "the American Dream".
Yet, these days, it seems that the Dream has gone all Daffy Duck, "it's mine, it's mine, it's ALL mine..."

I am not accusing nor pointing the blame at anybody.
Europe in general, and Spain and Italy more in detail, are facing a wave of african immigration that is Beyond any previous historical record and getting beyond control.
That a mere 5% of these are Christians, and less than 10% are true political refugees (war in Syria, for one) means the remaining 90% of these people are simply fleeing hunger, unemployment
or local feuds or civil war which goes unreported from major media.

THIS is a mass demonstartion of african migrants (not immigrants, just migrants, people in search of a better future) in ISRAEL

and THIS is what ITALY is having to cope with, 3 - 5 times a day for the last 10 (ten !) years or so...

I've seen reports that state otherwise. Less common than elsewhere, probably.
The effort required to post an opinion is greater than the value of posting it.
Those who would agree with parts of it, would.
Those who would scoff at all of it wouldn't change any.
Yes, America was founded in immigration, but when unemployment is rampant, it's time to stop importing laborers .

I think there are 2 or 3 simple changes many people agree with to one degree or another. They would have profound effects on the country.

1) Eliminate automatic payroll deduction for state and federal taxes. All paychecks should be gross pay and make everyone write a check monthly for what they owe for state and federal taxes. We get desensitized to just how much money the Feds take every paycheck. If we had to write a check every month, most of this overspending nonsense would stop pretty quickly. I’m not sure even Pelosi or Reid would get elected in their safe districts if everyone saw in  black and white how much money these slimballs were stealing from them every paycheck…

2) Flat Tax. 10% for everyone. No deductions. Make $10,000 a year, pay $1,000. Make $1,000,000, pay $100,000.  Most churches live off of 10% and manage to function well because they can’t involve themselves in everything that comes along. Same for the Federal Government. Constitutionally, the Federal Government has only a few functions, but  over the years, they keep adding to what they deem to be federal business. It's hard to find an activity where the Feds don't have some type of oversight.

3) Regarding immigration; the most important thing is English only. No more of this press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish. Nope, everything in English. It forces assimilation. Right now, immigrants maintain their cultures. We don’t want that. If they want to maintain their culture, go back to where they came from. This is American, act like one.

Mark -
Great ideas, but your #1 is unworkable.  IRS would have to be 10 times its current size to chase down every deadbeat.  Most of the people aren't that compliant, nor responsible enough to pay their own taxes.

As for number 2, I'm in agreement, but it'll never get past the average voter who is jealous of the successful.

#3 - Agree totally.  Again, every effort to officially establish English as the official language has failed - bet you can guess why - who gets the Latino vote?

I saw this thread and thought oh hear we go, but have surprisingly agreed wth most replies.

Living in California and working in the restaurant industry I have a lot of 1st hand dealing with illegal immigrant issues. When I 1st moved to Cali I was overlooked for 2 jobs not due to qualifications because I was over qualified for both. But for not speaking Spanish. I was passed for somebody with less education and less experience because I only spoke the language we use in the country.

Secondly, I spent the first 2 years here working for a company that didn't E-verify social security information. So I had multiple "fake SSD card" illegals who would do a $12-$15 an hour job for minimum wage. Who wouldn't hire that right? Spoke no English, didn't take breaks, didn't need insurance or benefits, no worries about unemployment or workmans comp claims...the perfect solution. And this is the thinking of a large majority of business in my industry here in SoCal. And I'm sure it's that way in most businesses.

I'm all for coming here for a chance at a better life. My great grand parents did it from the Netherlands. They came here, learned the language, learned the culture and became functioning members of society. Did they give up who they were and where they came from, no but they became a part of the country they immigrated to.

The current restaurant I am an Executive Chef at I will not hire someone unless they can read, write and speak English. I have Spanish speaking employees but in my kitchen we speak English. That's the language we use in the country and it's only fair to those who've had to learn it to communicate here that those planning to make a life here should learn it as well.

Here's a link that everyone should read. Since this Mexico has altered some of it's own immigration law trying to better align itself with the US so we take their illegals with less opposition. But most of these rules still apply. Mexico doesn't want you unless you can contribute something to their society. And they don't play with all the red tape of what to do with you when your caught illegally in the country.

Remember the sequel to National Treasure where the Declaration of Independence was stolen called Book of Secrets?  Well, if it really did exist, I suspect it would say: "dear mr. New president, do not mess with Mexican immigration. Talk about it, threaten to do something, but don't realy do anything to change the status quo. Yea, we all know it's messed up but considering that Mexico's main source of income is cash sent across the boarder, how much of a $hit storm do you think you're gonna be in if you put the brakes on illegal immigration, Mexico deteriorates into chaos and you basically will end up with another Iraq on your southern boarder with 25 million sympathetic males ready to fight who live in cities and towns all across the USA?"

I wanted to say this so my point was not taken as "I'm totally against immigrants"

While working t the job that didn't E-verify I can say I had cooks who came here illegally yet learned English, contributed to our economy and paid taxes (although thru a fake or reused SSN number). Before moving to California I had little knowledge of immigration and the problem it was in this country. These particular individuals had come here to work, most had remedial jobs ie. dishwasher/prep cook and worked 2 full time jobs. Other than basic cost of living sent the rest of their paychecks back to wherever they were from to support the families they left behind. That IMO is admirable and not something most "Americans" would do.

But having said that those types are a small percentage. It's very common here to see a Mexican woman speaking zero English with 5+ children all of which were born here and privy to citizen rights paying for her groceries with food stamps. Then walking outside and loading up her government benefit groceries into a 40k dollar SUV.

A conversation about those who are a financial drain on the government is a whole nother topic.

I was in San Diego once (very close to Mexico border) and had to drive thru a police security check point kinda similar to a DUI checkpoint. When I asked what it was for the officer explained it was to catch unlicensed drivers most of which were illegal immigrants. So I asked what happens when you catch one. His response was right a ticket and impound the vehicle. I asked but what about the illegal immigrant part, he said it's not our job we are just trying to stop them from driving.
I experienced this same situation a year later. One of my cooks showed up to work in a "new car" when I asked about the car he replied oh I got stopped the other night on my way home and they take your car. And with little to no worry in his voice he said I had to go buy another one.

I really did not want to post about this. I fear my position is very un -PC.
On the politics ( I feel)
Democrats don't want immigration to change (except to make easier) as it will pad their voter count.
Republicans don't really want any change as having a broke system works EXTREMELY well for employers of this group. What they are fighting for right now is how to have a new law to make the current criminals not criminals but have a way to allow for new criminals to enter and still be criminals so they can be still exploited. Thats why the pugs wont go with the dems.

What about LEGAL aliens? how is it fair to reward criminals ( the mere act of crossing illegally) and punish law abiding seekers of entry? ( by making their wait even longer)

I completely disagree that illegals only take jobs no one else will take. No such job exists.. or ever existed. What they mean is no one will work for less than minimum wage except those here illegally.  (that is different) (PS.. yes I would dig ditches .. for $1 Million per year) At some price point any job can be filled.  And YES this is a crime (exploitation of illegals) against poor people.

Anyway... I think criminals should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Those charged with that responsibility that fail it, should be fired and prosecuted if applicable. If the majority feel that the current law is not right the law should it be changed. But until then the law should be enforced.

I work with Chinese  and Indian folks all the time. I have no issue with folks that came here legally. Love them! We have lunch together and explore our cultures.. its great times! We work well together!

PS: Rylee said "I wanted to say this so my point was not taken as "I'm totally against immigrants""

I think you missed a word .. illegal

Or at least I can say I am 10,000% for immigrants... but I am just as much against CRIMINAL illegal immigrants.

As an ORIGINAL 'merican, one who's ancestors walked here, none of you speak the native language, although there's not just 1.

Went to china town in spain... did I hear chineese?  no.
Go to any china town (or whatever) in 'merica and you hear chineese.
Sometimes you have to look around for an english speaker.

I'd have to say illegals are allowed to cross the border so they can be forced to work for minimum wage w/out benefits and R's & D's will never do any thing about it, there's too much at stake.

Even the current move to bring up the minimum wage is to reinforce it.

current move in Cali is to give all the illegals driving licenses.  I guess so they'll buy insurance and stop with the 'hit and run' mentality.  any one who does so ought to be deported to antartica.

The flat tax is so inviting; yet some say it is regressive.  I think an individual needs to earn close to 40K a year to slip over the border from poverty to just not middly classed.  So I think 5% tax to every one whose gross income is under 40K ..they get to feel like they are contributing to the US (wether they want to or not).  10% for 40K-125K (again gross income), 15% to all above that.  It is interesting that the wealthier can deduct their loses in the gambling or the stock market and also pay a lower tax rate than a salary say of a carpenter.  (I say wealthier only because poorer people don't have the money to invest in the stock market, except thru their pension plan)  Oh stop laughing,

Title: Re: Immigration fix........

The home deduction interest deduction goes almost entirely to the wealthiest 10% of the population and is one of the most expensive "(entitlement??)programs the US tax code supports.  Doing away with this would bring in substantial monies (which is the goal of taxation I believe).  The so called death tax is another gifting to the already rich.  With an exclusion of over a million dollars, there are very few homes or estates that would incur the tax (I certainly am not worth a mil).  Small to medium size companies that are family owned are worth some real discussion, I certainly would hate to destroy a small business (eg motorcycle shop that's worth just over a mil by taxing it).

I think this is why so many look at a national sales tax, but I suspect that much like meals taxes, only a portion are actually forwarded to the government.  SO, make the 3 tier tax rate on all income without any deduction for loses or cost (that is gross revenue, not profit)  A system change that would have to be implemented over a period of time, for sure.  I suspect though that many might like to impose a national sales tax as it might be easier to collect from businesses than individuals.  But I am against this, as I doubt that all goods and services would be reported (heck, lawyers don't even have to tax for their services).  Oh well,

WhenAmerica was young and growing we needed a population, a workforce.
We are overwhelmed by unemployment and immigrants who didnt LEAVE their country to come and assimilate and become Americans. The same powers that are using our military are choosing to ignore the immigration laws and use good sense in how many people and their skills, etc, come here. A nation is like a huge corporation. Trip; you've got a serious case of wealth envy.

If I make $50,000.00 and it Costs 48 to live, I pay taxes on 96% of my income with a national sales tax. Because I SPEND 96%..
But if I make$50,000,000.00 and spend a million..
Well, I can explain it for you, but I can't understand it for you.

So far as I know all services are non Taxable, at least in Tx
that mean no lawyer tax, no tax on LABOR when a mechanic works on your car, no tax on your Karate class or personal trainer services
PRODUCTS are taxed, (except for food) but not services

I highly doubt anyone who make 50 mill only spends 1 mill, and if they do, they're no worse than a guy who makes 400 a week and lives on 100. That's called being frugal

so let's see, you make 50k and you spend 25k as a small business owner for your business expenses, so you actually TAKE HOME the same as a 25k laborer, but have to pay 2x or more (maybe that's the next tier) taxes, yeah, real fair, and encourages entrepreneurship  (heavy sarcasm)
Also, the only argument for why it's 'fair' that the rich pay higher % of taxes is 'they can afford it'
Yup, let's punish folks for being successful
And how does this collect taxes from the dope dealer up the road who makes 100K and is ob section 8 housing, food stamps, etc because he 'has no income'?

They did that here in Connecticut.
I don't understand it. How can you be issued a driver's license if you're an illegal immigrant?[/quote]

ENFIELD, CT (WFSB) -
A spokesperson for the Department of Motor Vehicles says the Enfield branch will be closing early Saturday because of the high volume of customer traffic.

Spokesman Bill Seymour says the Enfield will close its doors at 11 a.m., an hour and a half early, because lines are extremely long.

Seymour went on to say that they want to make sure they can serve all customers who are already in line and because of that will be shutting the doors to any additional customers.

There was no word on why there was such an influx of customers.

Seymour did say that all customers in line prior to 11 a.m. will be served as needed.

I believe in Immigration being healthy. From a cultural outlook many people who leave their native lands seeking a brighter future I have noticed have a deeper sense of pride in their new home more so than its inhabitants already. Plus alot of our ancestors were immigrants in the same situation. There is a reason why the statue of liberty has its plaque saying what it says. Or atleast a reflection of what we were in the past

That placard welcomes legal immigrants who go through a process.
Not people who skirt the law.

How is it reasonable to import anything into any market that is flooded with supply?

People aren't thinking rationally about it. Drop all the history and all the warm fuzzy.

If UNEMPLOYMENT is rampant, then Importing potential Employees only further floods the market, driving down wages further.

How many decades of open border and increased unemployment do you NEED to wake up?

It's not reasonable at all!
If we had any control over it (a la Ellis Island or whatever contemporary means) we could track it, adjust for growth, adjust the economy accordingly, examine trends, take precautions.
What we have now is a saturated, unsustainable market.

Every "undocumented" immigrant contributes to the downfall.

Ellis Island worked because you had only ONE point of entry for ALL immigrants.

That's because ALL immigrants came by steamer across the ocean.

You are now facing immigration across a land border, many thousands of miles long.

Of course... "if you can't beat'em, join'em" and go to Canada !  ;)

8-) (it's just a pun...)

Our government is actively involved in the influx.
