Title: Seat Mods completed
Post by Srotag on 02/10/15 at 08:39:56

Seven months, 1300 miles and hours of wrenching....wife says "I thought you were done"...never done!

Seat is from Yamaha 650..wider and much more comfortable for one up riding. You can mount any number of pillons  if needed.  I just covered all the fender holes with a Mustang fender bib. All Ebay used stuff.

Front is lifted and rectifier moved forward, all rubber mounted.

So far: Raptor, batt charge pigtail, HD Sportster muff w/long shield, lisc plate mount, spark plug door, TEV washer...NO POPS   ;D

Great site and appreciate all the helpful posts!!!

On the '05 it was mounted about in the middle of the rear fender... so it had to go somewhere.  No pressure on it when I'm on the seat.

The side mounts are stock Suzi off the long seat.  The Yama has a plastic "tongue"  that fits right up to the Suzi front mount.  The Yama seat had a plastic bar across the bottom, dremeled off and that was it.
I also used some rubber chunks fro vibration isolation.

Searching will show pics of the seat either studded, plain, or a Southwest rope edge. The bib was just to cover the bolt holes from the rectifier.  You could use a small pillion seat.  Or take the fender off and do some body work. :)

I may have to look into that, the seat is the weakest point of the S40 IMO

Lovely job, something I am thinking of doing myself. I would like to add a back rest too. ;)

Easy to do...taillight off.  Cut bracket, attach plate with bolts through the two smaller holes. Rolled edged of plate to eliminate sharp edges.  I am adding LED bolts for lighting (Ebay).  Had a LED strip light under the fender, not very bright.

I hated the stupid hang down look of the stock mount...the plate mount change was my very first, say day 2, mod.  8-)  8-)

Thats a beautiful S40...nicely done!

My Savage will NEVER be a two-person ride. I've been thinking about a solo seat and the Yamaha that you used looks to be the ticket.

I moved the regulator to the tool box since I carry the tools in a fork bag now anyway.

My main issues with the stock Savage seat are 1) it has no upper butt support. If you know look at the Yamaha seat you can see how much deeper it is with a raised back, and 2) it's a 2 piece setup. I just dont care for that look.

I may go for a solo seat. I have a Sportster seat I have tried to mangle on the bike but still dont like the way it feels. So here's a silly question that I couldnt find a straight "yes" or "no" answer to using the search engine:

Will the stock '06-2015 S40 Boulevard seat fit the savage? With less hassle than the Sportster seat?

If so, that may solve my issue. Boulevard seats are pretty cheap on sleazebay.

EDIT: Does anyone have a factory P/N for the Yamaha 650 seat that some here have used?

Thanks in advance,

Current listing listing.  Several others available, again there are various trims, studs etc. out there.

The part this guy modified is the piece that needs to be removed so it will work if you like the plain seat.  8-)  8-)

Thanks Srotag...picked up a seat with a slight tear here locally for $40. Tear is actually under the seat, so I think I can repair it cleanly withour ever being seen.

Still curious about the comparability of the S40 Boulevard seat...

Hey Stu, do a 'how to' on this while you're at it

I happen to have a savage rear fender, which as you know is slightly different from my S40 rear fender.  I was looking at it last night to see if the seat from the S40 would fit the savage.  It appears that you have a couple of options.  If you were to put an S40 rear fender on your Savage you should be able to mount the S40 seat to it with no further modification.  If you want the S40 seat to fit the Savage with the stock fender it seems there will have to be a couple of slight modifications.  First is the rear mount point of the S40 seat.  You're going to want to drill a bolt hole in the Savage fender at the correct point and spot weld a nut for the 6mm anchor bolt to it.  You might also need to grind off the rear seat stay from the savage fender but maybe not.  It actually should slip right under the S40 seat without a problem.  Either way seems pretty easy.  Hope that helps.

Thanks chzeck...that answers my question.

The issue with the Sportster seat is that it doesnt have "wings" on the sides where the rider sits...so there is a huge air gap visible between the seat and the frame. I cut quite a bit of the Sportster plastic seat pan out in order to get it to conform to the shape I wanted. Then I re-supported the seat with sheet metal so it didnt sink when I sat on it. Still not happy with the look though.

I'm not worried about modding the original Savage fender a bit to make the S40 seat work. It will be a lot less work (time and effort wise than I put into the Sportster mod already. I could just get a junked S40 fender and put that on the bike too.

I havent decided whether to go with the one piece seat(S40) or the solo yet(Yamaha V-star). Good to know there are options though!

Art, only camera I have at present is on the phone...and it's not the greatest. I will be posting pics of the regulator relocation soon. As for the seat, when I decide to pull the trigger I'll borrow a decent camera from the landlady to document my "ordeal" 8-)

I'm going to do both.  After seeing what Srotaq has posted here, I'm definitely going to be getting the Yamaha 650 seat and a bib and mimicking the nice job he's done.  I will also keep the S40 seat (which, despite the common complaints about, I happen to like a lot) and will use it when I'm planning a two up ride with my wife.

If I do the V Star seat I will definitely keep the S40 seat too
