Title: Thoughts on keyless gas cap
Post by stewmills on 10/17/14 at 14:17:30

Let me start by sayin' that I am not going to do this on my bike so I am personally not looking for suggestions, but seeing several recent posts about gas caps and the inability to make ours keyless got me to thinking (which is dangerous).

Why, oh why, can't you take a properly sized threaded insert (smooth on the outside and threaded on the inside to receive the gas cap) that has the right amount of lip on it to get up and over the lip on the stock tank, and simply fit it right into the hole and either JBweld it in place, or if you so desired screw it in place if it's one that comes with screws (just hafta make sure the screw holes are sealed too or it'll leak...which is why I like the JBweld idea).   Or, to avoid external leaks you could screw through the inside of the new neck into the turn-downs inside the stock tank and holes don't matter because it's not external.

Then, you just get a nice pretty cap that fits the inside treads of the new neck and you have it!

It would maybe raise the height of the overall apparatus a little because you have the new neck overlapping the stock neck and unless it's a flush mount cap it'll stick up some.

Anyhow, just a random thought that maybe someone with more fabrication skills and creativity can experiment with.

Enjoy.

Those assemblies are meant to screw in welded in sockets.
If you can cut out the original and screw in one of those let us know.   8-)

If you want to make the stock cap keyless... one member glued a cap on a key and stuck the key in and left it.  gives you the option to pull it out when you don't like the neighborhood if you want to.

Are our caps vented in any way? The one in the photo doesn't appear to be vented

Somebody recently solved that, simply, cleanly, and cheaply.. using a key and the helmet lock.

Perhaps look over this link:
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1412190332/0

Get a extra key/s, and something that looks like a, 'lock'.
Place the, 'key' in the thing, that looks like a lock,
(Just, 'MacGiver it, By whatever means you are used to, or, comfortable with)

Then when someone, just passes by, it is not a 'Key' in a lock they see.
They, 'see', a 'Lock'.
Yet, it is a, 'key'.

Then if you are in a area, where, you think you Need, a key, 'Lock".
Just take out the, 'key', which, 'looks like a, 'lock'. and put it in your pocket.
