Title: Keyless Gas Cap
Post by MnSpring on 10/01/14 at 12:05:21

Well, it's not really, 'keyless', it just looks that way.

Finally got a 'roundtuiot', Had some extra keys made.
One I hid. One was for the gas cap.

Just having a key sticking out of the gas cap all the time, looks kinna tacky. So picked up some lug nuts, from a, 'Auto Recycling Yard',  (aka, Junk Yard) just down the road from me. Cut a couple off, that I liked the look of, Cut the key off, so in the, 'nut' it was almost flush with the cap. Epoxied it in. and vola !

And Yes Mom, if someone took that, 'nut with the key in it', out, it will turn the Ig.

But, 90% of the time, (where I go), it just doesn't matter. Thinking if that is a consideration, just find another person, that wants to do the same thing, and swap caps & a key.  That way the gas cap, 'nut', (or whatever you put on), won't turn, Your Ig.
Another idea, just find a cap, with a key, from a MC Junk yard. And do the same thing. Now, that gas cap 'keyless', thing, will not turn the Ig.

Now, am going to do the Ig.
Want a, 'cup', that will go over the Ig Switch. Easy to find the right size, in plastic, (ends for pipe).  But I want something that is, chrome. Gotta look more at, 'plumbing', stores. Thought about the Iron pipe caps, they will work.  Then paint it black. But Lots of work sanding, grinding, filling, to make it smooth.

Anybody have a idea?  I am thinking of the old fashion urinals,  they had a, 'cap', on the top. It was a nut. and it would look like just another 'nut', on the bike. (unless someone knew the LS650/S40. And outside of the person riding it)

And when necessary, just pull both out and slip in to my pocket.

Just a idea.

Looks pretty cool! I am intrigued by the ignition idea and would like to see pictures of that, when you get it done.

You might try the copper plumbing pipe caps.  Maybe a 1"...not sure about the size you need.

Browse around truck stops that have the 'chrome shop' in them. They have lug nut covers and all sorts of chrome goodies that you may not be going after, but you might see something and have an "ah-ha!" moment.

I dig it.. no one would look at that and figure out that they could steal it,most likely. Wouldn't be a Bad idea to pull it and lay it next to your keys at the end of the day.

Hmm, hidden in plain sight would probably work! Thumbs up!

OK, if you can take a joke, here it cometh...  ;)

In colloquial Italian, a skewed idea that starts bright and devolves into a really baaad idea is called a "cesso" (prn. chess-o) i.e. a urinal.
;D ;D ;D Sorry, you started it !

So, in order to avoid having to put one key into your pocket... you want to put TWO keys with BOLTS welded on top ?  :-?

Lemme volunteer my two cents' worth.

Ignition. It's nice looking back there under our thighs, it's also a crappy position...

So... let's assume we want to reposition the ignition.
So... let's assume we want to get rid of the key.
So... let's assume we want to keep our bike secure even with the keyless ignition in plain sight.

Here you see one... two... THREE  lights/indicator switches off 1970's mopeds.

They look definitely vintage, all shiny cromey metal, AND they have one switch with three positions,
which you could call "left indicator", "off", "right indicator".

OK, so now let's baptize those three positions "run" "off" "parking lights".

They're almost always pure metal, so even when they do heat up (should they ever...) they won't certainly melt in your hand !

It can't get any more difficult than a plain rewire...

PS Tiny shiny button on the top of middle and right picture (red or gold) is the kill switch)

Also, theres a wire to the decomp timer that IF ya drop 12 Volts on it, Itsa Gonna maka da motor spin over.. And the current draw is so tiny that a switch from a DVD player will handle it. You can hide that switch up under the frame and just flip a toggle to turn on the system, then push the button. Of course, a button NOT on the bars means a hand not on the bars.. which could be a problem,, Hafta ditch the N safety or not be able to gas it,, or sumpin,,
I set mine up to do that,, because it would sputter and die when it was out of warranty, but it stopped that after a coupla years..
Itll spin it over, KEY in pocket, in Gear,, so,, pay attention.

So, Thinking. Some miscreant comes along, Wouldn't take 1/2 a brain to think, "What is a Lug Nut, doing on top of a Gas Tank cover".
Also, the excellent statement: "Hiding in Plain Sight".

So, why not make a, key, that looks like a lock?

Had a helmet lock from a rack I picked up at the Junk Yard.
No key for it. Took it apart, cut off the, 'barrel', Took the key I cut off for the lug nut. (little heat, and it pulled out of the Nut). Epoxied it in. and, again, 'volia'.

Of course, if someone figures it out. it will also work in the Ig.

But now, My, 'key' for the Ig lock, will be a, 'lock'.
(When It stops raining out, I will, 'peruse', the Car Junk Yard).

Goal:  Two keys, in the locks, that the key looks like a lock.  ;D

And so ever grateful for this tip:
" ... In colloquial Italian, ... a "cesso" (prn. chess-o) i.e. a urinal. ..."

Like the first Time I was I  a Pub in Great Yarmouth, (UK). I asked, "Where is the bathroom", answer was, 'UH". Then I asked: "Where is the Head". Answer again: "UH". Then I said: "Where does one take a pizz".
And the answer was: "Oh Yo Mate, ya want the LOU".

Next time I am in Rome, I'll just ask for the, 'Cesso'.  ;)

Rainy, Cold Nasty out here. So after cleaning the desk.
just, 'had to do something else'.

Here is the 'Key' which looks like a, 'lock', for the IG.

Now again, 90% of the time. Leaving a, 'key' in,
is NO Problem! (HERE) 10%, just take them out, and put in coat pocket.

The 'Lug nut', looked good, but the second thing, (2nd photo), is better.
The Ig 'key/lock'. is the bottom half of the helmet lock used before.
and a, 'lock', front from a old topper.

Their are 1000's of things to do this with, and as many ways.
So just an idea, for a, 'keyless' lock,
which is a 'key' that looks like a, 'lock'.

I did see a guy wire up his ignition switch with a usb port. His key? A standard jump drive/ thumb drive/ memory stick. It was a neat idea but I always wondered if the vibrations would knock it loose.
