Title: handlebar risers
Post by brownie17 on 09/30/14 at 18:44:25

What's a good height riser for drag bars so they don't hit the tank?

If you use the base platform of the stock risers, you should have enough clearance. Tried it once, OK. :D

You will need a shorter brake line.

depends on the year.
newer years have the throttle cable come out of the control in the front
older out the bottom.

I have Z bars with 3" of rise, that's the lowest I would recommend.

I have the handlebars like in this picture. I would like to go with about 2" riser and drag bars. Will I need to get new cables?

those look taller than the risers you want. the cable will probably need replacing/shortened. I have lower bars than stock and the brake line was way too long to fit properly.  Throttle wasn't a problem. :D

My bike is a 2000 with stock handlebars. They have a small riser at the bottom.  I made a couple 1 1/2 risers to go on top of them.  Those risers with drag bars is my goal.

I think it was Cflow that used to be on here.Did his like that and he had to use broomstick bars.So it would clear the tank.

what width drag bars are you going to use?

Post by Demin on 10/01/14 at 15:24:35

I know the stock drag bars won't clear.Maybe a couple inches wider will work.

I think I'll mock them up, test them and have them custom made. I'll pay some pics later.

I meant to say, I'll post some pics later.

Just measured mine. I have 3" between the top triple clamp and the bottom of the handlebar. The actual riser height is 1.5" of tube between the rubber/chrome mount thing on the top clamp and the original handlebar clamp. In other word, the original bar riser arrangement plus 1.5".
I'll take a pic. The flat washers are because the tubes I had were that much too short. The tube + washers = 1.5"
My bars are flat drag bars with 2" pullback. That clears the tank only just.
The stock cables and brake hose work fine on my one.
Hope that makes sense and is helpful.

Thanks. That's exactly the same measurement on my risers. How wide are your handlebars? Could you post a pic a little farther back so I can see the setup?

No worries. the pic makes it look like the bars are pointing up a bit, they're not really. The pulled back tip are in at 90 deg to a line through the risers, so the point down a little. The bars are 29" tip to tip.
HTH. :)

May as well post one of the full scooter. The bars suit it (IMO  ;) )

Thanks for posting the pic.   Where did you get those handlebars?  I would like to have some just like 'em.   Nice!!

Brownie17:

You might just want the risers and drag bars from a later Savage....they are nice, and I believe more comfortable than the pullbacks.  I am not sure what year they switched.....but you should be able to find some in the Marketplace on this forum - or eBay.  Anyone converting to a Cafe' bike will not be using the stock risers and bars.

Thanks for the info.  In case I can't find the new s40 drag bars, do you know where you got yours ?

My bike was a 2007 model.....and they came on the bike from the factory.

Gizzo..... Where did you get the black bars on your bike?

Title: Re: handlebar risers
Post by gizzo on 10/02/14 at 14:17:01

I got them for about $40 from a custom bike ebay store here in Australia. Just do a  search on ebay for 1" bars. Or, check Blue Collar Bobbers, they'll sell you a bar and risers for $160 ish, or Dime City Cycles. The stock drag bars are from 2005 on, I think?
Good luck.

Gizzo... Where did you get that rear fender?

Title: Re: handlebar risers
Post by gizzo on 10/05/14 at 00:27:09

The back mudguard (Ok, fender  ;) ) came from a classic/custom shop in Melbourne. It's just a generic full length 6" wide thing. I trimmed it down, welded a few mounting tabs on, drilled holes, painted and there it is. Had to make some stays as well. They attach to the swingarm via the axle nuts.
This one http://www.dimecitycycles.com/6-inch-wide-raw-steel-flat-front-or-rear-custom-bobber-motorcycle-fender.html  is pretty similar, maybe a bit deeper on the sides. Other guys use a trailer fender, right?
I saw in another thread you asked about seats. FWIW the one on mine, and the brackets, I made from scratch. If you like I can explain how I went about it.

I'd definitely like to hear about it.

I just received a 2013 S40 and the curved risers push the bars back too far for the length of my arms.

I am looking for suggestions for risers and I don't want to make homemade risers. Also, I really don't want to change the cables and brake hose if possible.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Guys,

I thought of turning the risers around, but I cannot picture what it is going to look like.

If someone that has done that and would post a picture I would really appreciate it.

If no one sends a pic I will turn my risers around and post some pics on here. I will then decide if that is what I want, and either way I will post that revelation .

Serious Thumper Thank You!

I don't really care for the appearance of reversing the risers now that I see it.

I think I am going to try machining the risers so that only the straight section remains and see how I like the position of the handlebars.

If I don't care for the modifications described above I have SuperBars on my Blast and Ryan told me that their SuperBars will work with the stock risers just by ditching the riser extensions.

Thanks,

Kenny G
