Title: What are our frames made of?
Post by paulmarshall on 09/02/14 at 20:17:57

Hi I believe the tubular parts of our frame are made from chromoly (Chrome-Moly) (not sure what you guys on the other side of the world call it?) but was wondering is the swing arm made of something else as its heavy compared to other parts of the frame?

I just took everything down to bare metal on my bike for a refinnish.
i had a bit of rust on my swing arm. dont know if that means molly or no molly.
if we jst talking bout stuff that was chromed on my savage...the forks,
triple trees, bolts, thingy that goes around the head lamp, shocks, and them weird covers at the top of the head.....however the tubular parts of my frame are not Chrome.

We call it steel........that's about as accurate since there are so many chromoly alloys. About the only time we'll refer to it as "chromoly" is if it's been case hardened.

Swingarm might just be heavier gauge mild steel. Maybe one of the guys that've welded on one will chime in here.

Oh, and Boogie, molly will still rust.

So I can mig weld mild steel to chrome-moly?

Can you? Yes........    Should you? Just depends on the application.

Tig is usually considered better for that. Either way, watch for cracks.

Lots of guys on here have welded on their frames, hopefully one of them will share their experience.

ya was jst researching, turns out chromoly steel doesn't contain enough chromium to prevent rust.
oh wait, wat the hell am i thnking.?.. ive welded metal to my frame, used stick welder or arc welder or watever its called...70/18..60/10... i dnt know its been a while. did my seat mounts, no problems yet.
Tubes do indeed rule. luv my EL34's & 12AX7's. Svetlana though, none of that groove tube nonsense.

I tig welded my voodoo hardtail on. Chromoly will still get some surface rust if left bare. Not exactly sure what the stock frame is... Probably just steel. Just be careful when welding the stock frame to the something thicker like the voodoo hardtail, stock frame is paper thin.

Chrome-moly is kinda' fancy... I doubt there's anything fancy on our bikes...
We got aluminum,... and we got steel,... we got a little plastic, not much...
If there's any chrome moly, it might be rings...

BYO brass ones if you got'em... ;D...

Went to a engineers shop today to pick up some material for my sub frame Im making for my cafe racer, and they looked at a part of my frame and said its Chrome-Moly. Not knowing the age of the bike they could be wrong. I hope they are.

Ive done welding, drilling, cutting and threading on the frame and kinda doubt it is actually chromemoly. Chromemoly is pretty hard usually.  I have a Thermo Niton XRF Metallurgy analyzer at my work.  Ill try to shoot the frame and various parts and see exactly what it is if wanted.

I don't remember the top frame (under seat) tubes being really hard - but I do know the little tubes that the engine and footpeg mount bolts pass through is really hard stuff.  When I did my Cafe' conversion I had to shorten those tubes.....and it is really hard on sawzall blades and takes a long time to cut all the way through.

I just got a reply from Ryan at Ryca and he reckons its mild steel. I didn't know mild steel would be strong enough for motorcycle frames.

That would be great if you can. :)
