Title: Dual Sport Tires / Rim Conversions
Post by Witflip on 08/16/14 at 22:13:04

I'm thinking of putting dual sport tires on my (future) Ryca Bobber. I found Avon Distanzias and Continental Twinduros (100/19 - 19 for fronts and 150/70 - 17 for rears). The fronts will fit perfectly without any mods or rim replacement, BUT... I'm having trouble with sourcing a 17" 36 spoke wire wheel for the rear. Any ideas? Is there anybody out there that can recommend someone who will lace me a 17" rim if I send them my rear hub assembly? Also, where can I find 17" rear rims???? Do they even exist? Are there any other rim sizes to consider that will give me the (near) same tire/rim dimensions that will be straight bolt-ons? Suggestions pls :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/       ;)

Try buchannons
i think you'll need narrower rears, you might want to talk to ryca.

Hi verslagen1
Got them... (http://www.buchananspokes.com) Will contact them ASAP.

Once I've got a reply from them I'll update this post.

As for rear tire size I mentioned; it comes recommended by Ryca to use the a 150/90-15 rear. I used Tacoma's Tire Size Calculator (http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php) to get to the size I want i.e. 150/70-17. My uneducated guess is it'll fit perfectly without messing about with the frame/suspension setup.

Fingers crossed

Be sure to get a rim width that is recommended for the tire.  Modern Dual sports often have very wide rims, and the tires are made to work on those wider rims.

If you want a DS 17" rear rim you might wanna check the Yamaha Xt600 and some Suzuki Dr650 rear rims. They are 36 spokes but you will have to relace them to your hub.
Good luck and please post a picture of the result!

If you want the knobby look for the street,... look for a tire with knobs that overlap each other down the center of the tire...
(They'll last longer and run smoother)...
These are IRC 110's...  I used to run them on my DP bike...

Awesome!

@Dave: duly noted... it is still a major concern of mine considering the chain conversion... I guess it'll be trial and error. Best to have the original wheel/tire combo handy just in case.

@PinkHelmet: 2nd hand DR650 rim on order. As well as LS650 rear hub. Just in case my lacing skills turns out to be worse than my Italian...

@Serowbot: Never even considered that. With the already limited tire options available the search continues

Yup,.. running knobbies on asphalt, will cup the knobs really fast,...
...and turn the knobs into pyramids, that will create a vibration, that will rattle every filling you ever had out of your teeth... ;D...

If you are going to be riding on the street mostly....then get Adventure Tourer tires.  They are good on the street, pretty good in the dirt....but useless in the mud.

Hiya Dave. Gonna stick to either the Avon Distanzias I pictured earlier or the Metzelers. After reading your recommendation I have decided to stick to Dual Sports. I have ordered a DR650 rear rim and extra LS650 rear hub. Should give me two options for the bobber.

If you decide to build the rims yourself I have the spoke sizes and a good supplier. I have a some spare sets on hand as well.

I cant remember (ie. im too lazy to go look it up in the build thread), do you have the swing arm mod with those tires?

I did the swingarm mod for previous tires, im not sure if its needed for this setup though. This afternoon Ill go look at the bike and see if its even needed for this.

If the swingarm wasnt cut out, I think the tire would be really close if not touching.

Id recomend the cut out with a setup like this.

Quick update: Matt from techsupport@buchananspokes.com came back to me with a very promising reply.

"We can lace and true a 17” rim with your hub. You can simply send in your hub with a packing slip with your contact information and which rim you would like."

So... decided on following:

17'x2.75 36 hole rim. Should be able to take the Continental Twinduro TKC80 150/70 x 17 no problem.

Next steps.

1) Receive rear hub.
2) Ship rear hub to Buchanan
3) Let the pros do their magic
4) Let the pros ship my new laced wheel back to the Middle East (forgot to mention that's where I'm at currently 8-)
5) Order tires.
6) Build bike...
7) Fit tires
8) Ride.

Will keep you posted

The folks at Buchanan's are great.  They really are genuinely interested in helping you, and providing either the parts you need to build your own wheel, or to build a wheel for you.
