Title: Help with 95 Savage
Post by Trista.Williams87 on 06/10/14 at 12:54:03

Hello,

I'm a new savage owner since right around Easter. Since then there have been about 7 or 8 times when I'm riding around and my bike very quietly shuts off. The engine doesn't sound like its struggling or any type of sound that is related with running out of gas. It just almost silently quits. Everything single time except once I was able to start it within 5 mins or so. The one exception was around 20 and when I first went to try and restart it I absolutely no power. There are a few things that I have noticed when this problem occurs. 1. every time it has happened when I have the clutch pulled in and I am about to downshift or just downshifted and 2. I am around 3rd gear. Also I am positive I have never accidently hit the kill switch. My friend has looked at my bike and says the carb is fine, doesn't see any blown fuses, or hear anything wrong. Has anyone heard of or had this problem before?

1st thing to try is the petcock test.

Do you have one of "the oil leaks"? (Engine block or Spedo)
Are you running your bike dry? Makes me cringe to say it but  I did that once when I first got my bike and had similar issues.  :'(

Maybe it stranded her somewhere bad?

Weird thing is that she mentioned she had no power at some point. Sounds like electrical, lose connector or something, one of these weird boxes under the tank :)

I had same thing stopped with no warning but after a few minutes would start again - drove me more insane than I already am, turns out the coil was shorting out to the frame from the point where the ht lead goes into the coil - banged another coil in from a suzuki and placed a thickish piece of plastic between the coil and frame and that seemed to cure it but run through the easier options first.
p.s. the coil that shorted was a generic coil from e-bay  ::)

Also one time had an issue with a loose ground.
Bike wouldn't stall but 1) wouldn't start (not enough cranking amps or something) 2) When would start Would choke up when I tried to throttle up. Or would loose all power and go to idle while riding in gear. Felt like a carb/petcock issue.

So perhaps, depending on the level of the faulty ground might possibly produce the problems that you are having?

Someone correct me if you know more than I do. Don't want to send this person down the wrong path.  :-X

Mine used to shut off, wouldnt even crank,, I put a button on the frame that bypassed everything, put 12 V to the decomp timer. It would spin over even with the key in my pocket,,It finally stopped doin that, I never could find it,
