Title: Fuel gauge?
Post by sailorcolin on 04/25/14 at 08:50:59

Anyone have or installed a fuel gauge of any kind? I know there is not factory sender but maybe someone found something like a in cap gauge that works?

Have a professional TIG it together. And pressure test it before you accept it back from the shop.

odometer is as good as fuel gauge, I clipped a tiny luggage combination lock near the handle bars (where I can see it while riding)

when I fuel-up just spin the tiny lock's dials to whatever the odometer reads.. we know how far a tank takes us

edit: but yes a small gauge would be nice also  ;)

Early on I really wished for a fuel gauge & a tach.. Once Id ridden it a while I got to the point of being happy w/o them.Just bet on getting gas every 100 miles,, snot hard.. In doubt? Pop the cap & have a look.,.,

Ya i know but there is the time when you are riding and it would be nice to just look quick at a gauge.

I agree that I just fill up every 100-miles.

Yea,, it would be nice,, but, that hose thing pokin out makes me nervous.. & getting an actual gauge in the tank would be a real hassle,,& once youve ridden a while, say 5,000 miles or so, youll get used to it. It will get "normal" to wheel in & grab some gas or pop the cap & look,, Ive done that a bunch O times. Come out of some place & wonder, cant remember the miles when I filled up, just pop the cap & have a look,, then either fire it up & go home or for more riding or, to get some Gayuss! Heck, its got a reserve,, as long as youre in town,, no biggeee.. When Im getting low Ill put it on reserve & head for gas. I dont want it cutting out in traffic or coming up to a stop.

I used the luggage lock method but when I 1st got the bike, I would write the mileage on the mirror with a grease pencil at every fill-up. wipes right off with your thumb or paper towel.

Agree with WD, if you go for his option you need a specialist welder, unless you are one yourself. The gauge shown is practical and simple but I don't like it aesthetically.. It would be problematic, not "challenging" to put in a sender unit and gauge and those things would take up space in your small fuel tank.

I have a VP3 that I use almost none of its features but the fake fuel gauge is shockingly accurate.

That's a good idea.   8-)

I agree, a fuel gauge would be nice. I installed a cheap bicycle computer that works real well.  I just re-set the trip odometer on each fill up, and I know how many miles I can travel on a tank.  As an added bonus the bicycle computer's speedometer function is way more accurate than the stock speedometer.  I think I learned of doing this from this very forum come to think of it.

I like the idea WD mentions but am too worried some idiot kid will just walk past and rip it off, leaving me crappity smacked.
I also worry about what happens if you take a slide - potentially fuel everywhere and maybe all over yourself and well you get the idea

Apart from that I love it  ;)
Like a lot of cool bike custom stuff, often not practical for urban everyday riding me learning.

Having a speedo with an trip meter has been great, gas up reset trip meter and once you know your driving habits and your bikes thirst, it's basically as good as a gas gauge. Around town switching to reserve is fine, but when riding in areas that you don't know it's great having a heads up for sure  :D
