Title: Octane?
Post by twelveport on 04/19/14 at 13:08:14

I'm just wondering why some people will only use 91 or higher octane with 8.5:1 compression ratio? I have used both in my LS650 & have not noticed any pinging. Just wondering what Suzuki recommends?

87 is way beyond good enough.  8.5:1 won't benefit from anything higher.

Thank you for confirming.

I had the opportunity to fill up with 89 octane leaded fuel and the motor LOVED it... or maybe my brain was lovin' it?

People do this because they don't know the facts.....that they are wasting money.

Stock piston.....use regular.

Wiseco......use premium.

Dave, why would you use premium with a wiseco?  Just curious, thanks.

Wiseco ups the compression... with a domed top I believe...

You guys have confirmed just what I was thinking. There are a lot of HD's out there and all of those guys burn 91 or better. So I guess there is just a lot of uninformed riders. Does anybody know the compression ratio for HD's? You would be surprised at the number of guys who think higher octane fuel makes more power. But we don't want to go there today.

Nope, my Harley manual said to use premium...

Every Harley I've ever ridden, even the 1920 Sport Twin, sounded like a washing machine full of rocks if you used regular gas in it.

A Savage would happily burn 85 octane.

All 4 of my Indians over the years were designed to run on 60 something octane garbage gas. Very anemic compression ratios. My 1949 Dodge 218 L6 will run on stale gas, it might have 6.5 or 7:1 compression.

My 98 Savage was happiest with low octane modern garbage gas and a splash of ATF or 2 stroke oil every couple tanks. A lot quieter than with plain modern gas.

Accidentally fueled the 03 Savage with 89 the other night, ran like crap. Filled it with 87 today and it ran fine.

If you can find it locally, run pure gas, no alcohol. The difference in how the engine sounds is incredible. As is the fuel economy boost.

Astonishes me that people ignore the octane recommendations of of the bike manufacturer, often for all sorts of goofy reasons. Why would Honda,HD yamaha etc. etc mislead folks about something like that? Just use whatever the book says to use and quit worrying about it.

I'm not sure if anybody is "ignoring" what the owners manuals says. Most of the time when you buy a used bike it does not come with a owners manual so we have to rely on our own judgement or the opinions of others. That is why we come to this web site. Thankfully we have those who have checked into this before or have a owners manual.

Lowest available at the pump for me for the LS650, I don't like throwing money away and that's what the engine is made for  ;)

I agree!

The manufacturers recommend fuel grade based on 2 things, #1 is the pressure they get from "Big Oil", #2 is the actual requirements of the engine.

Easiest way to figure minimum octane requirement... if you know your compression ratio, say 8.5:1 for cheap small bikes, multiply it by 10 to get your minimum octane rating. In this case, 85, but most stations have a minimum pump octane rating of 87. In parts of the upper mid-west you can buy 85.5 to 86.5 octane, so, run it on those.

Putting higher than 87 in a Savage, unless you have a shaved barrel/head or domed piston, is a waste of money. 87 octane pure gas in my 98 was good for 70+ mpg, 91 octane modern blended gas was good for high 40s mpg... and that was back when it ran stock handlebars. With the 15" apes, it got 45 on real gas and 36 on modern gas.

The effort to get alcohol free gas is worth the extra cost. Running mid grade or premium in a glorified Briggs and Stratton engine is not.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. You're right . Questions like yours are exactly what this site is for.

I just get a kick out of these "octane" discussions. If one of these threads goes on long enough someone is sure to chime in with an anecdote like this:

"My Grandpappy had a old Ford pickup with a flathead motor in her. He used to drive that truck over to the airport and fill that sucker up with 105 octane avgas. Man, that old truck ran like a raped ape ! !. Fastest truck in the whole dern county!!" ::)

Sometime when you're not busy, go over to one of the Harley forums and read through one of the "octane wars" on there. You'll be amazed.

Anyway, sorry. Sometimes I'm a jerk. I can't help it.

Thankfully, we have a copy of the owners manual that you can download in the tech section.
